The New Testament in Creole (“Negerhollands”) for the use of the Mission in the Danish West-Indies

2. [BIBL E–N E W T E STA M E N T– CR EOL E]. [M AGE NS, Jochum Melchior (translator)]. Die Nywe Testament van ons Heer Jesus Christus, ka set over in die Creols tael en ka giev na die ligt tot dienst van die Deen mission in America.Copenhagen, Heirs of Schultz, 1818. 8º. Contemporary calf, blue sprinkled edges. € 3750

Second edition of a translation of the New Testament in Negerhollands, the creole language spoken in the Danish West Indies (Virgin Islands). It is a corrected and cheaper version of the first edition of 1781 with numerous new errors. Correspondence in the Danish State Archives suggests that 1200 copies were printed of this this second edition (Van Rossem & Van der Voort). Negerhollands had emerged as a language around 1700 among the slaves on the plantations. With most of the planters being Dutch, that language forms the dominant part of Negerhollands, with elements from Danish, English, French, Spanish and African languages. In the middle of the 18th century, German Herrnhutter missionaries and Danish Lutheran missionaries began converting the black slaves to Christianity. As the creole had become the dominant language on the islands, the missionaries learned the language and simultaneously created a more formal “high creole” for ecclesiastical matters.Binding worn, otherwise a very good copy.

Intended for parents, it offers advice and instructions for treating all sorts of children’s illnesses, common and rare, as well as tips on the prevention of disease. It gives detailed descriptions and instructions for many home recipes that the parents themselves can prepare and administer to the children. Two appendices follow the three main parts: the first called “Verscheide aanmerkingen aangaande de kinder-ziekten” (Various notes on children’s diseases) with 23 numbered case studies, including a description of a child whose body was covered with scales except for his head (gossips blamed his

First and only edition of Van den Burg’s revised edition of the first Russian emblem book. The original emblem book was published in the Netherlands in 1705 as Symbola et Emblemata, with captions in Russian, German, Dutch, etc. It was published as part of a deal by Tsar Peter the Great granting the Dutch merchant Jan Tesing the right to print books in Holland for sale in Russia. The first genuinely Russian edition was published in 1788. This edition by the Dutch poet Hermanus van den Burg (1682–1752), uses the original plates and replaces most of the captions, including the Russian, by new two-line verses in Dutch. With a wormhole in the lower outer corner of the first 9 leaves and in the gutter, both not affecting the text, also with some minor spots. Binding somewhat rubbed along the extremities. Overall in good condition.

Only known copy of the first and only edition of a 1792 treaty between Russia and Prussia

7. C AT H ER I N E T H E GR E AT, Tsarina. [Title in Russian followed on the same page by:] Traité d’alliance défensive entre sa majesté l’Impératrice de toutes les Russies et sa majesté le Roi de Prusse conclu signé à St. Petersbourg le 27 Juillet/7 Aout 1792.[St Petersburg, Imperial Printing Office, 1792]. 2º (31 × 21 cm). Treaty between Russia and Prussia in Russian and French in 2 parallel columns in cyrillic (left) and roman (right) types. Side stitched, with the spine covered in contem-porary blue-grey paper. € 3250

Only copy located of the first and only edition, in Russian and French, of a defensive alliance concluded at St Petersburg between Tsarina Catherine the Great of Russia and Friedrich Wilhelm II, Frederick the Great’s successor as King of Prussia, on 7 August 1792 (27 July by the Julian calendar used in Russia until the Revolution) following the Polish-Russian War. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, once one of the largest and most powerful states in Europe, had been in decline since 1648 and had become largely subservient to Russia. It asserted greater independence with its new constitution of 3 May 1791, not only in opposition to Catherine the Great and the King of Prussia, but also to the conservative Polish noblemen, who feared a Revolution following the French example. They formed the pro-Russian Targowica Confederation in January 1792, and invited Catherine to intervene. The resulting Polish-Russian War (18 May

to 27 July 1792) forced the King of Poland to join the Targowica Confederation. The present treaty allied Russia and Prussia, who both hoped to keep Poland as weak as possible, and it led to the second partition of Poland in 1793, when Russia and Prussia each annexed a large chunk of Poland’s territory. The third partition in 1795 was to dissolve the Polish state entirely. While the treaty itself is well-known, the present first and only printed edition appears to be unrecorded, but a printed edition of the revised treaty of 16/28 July 1800, which added one article and revised several, survives at the Niedersächische S & UB Göttingen. The present publication opens with a formal declaration by Catherine the Great and an introduction to the treaty itself, followed by the XIV numbered articles of the treaty. The treaty is signed by Counts Johann von Ostermann and (Karl?) von der Goltz for Prussia and Count Alexander Bezborodko and his assistant and future successor Arkady Morkov for Russia, and ratified by Catharine the Great from St Petersburg, 10 September 1792.In very good condition, with the first and last page slightly dirty (mostly in the margin) and a small marginal chip in the corner of the first 2 leaves, and with generous margins. Only known copy of the first and only edition (in Russian and French) of an important 1792 treaty.

A great source for Russian history and foreign relations

8. [COY ET T, Balthasar]. Historisch verhael, of beschryving van de voyagie, gedaen onder de suite van den heere Koenraad van Klenk, extraordinaris ambassadeur ... aan zijne zaarsche majesteyt van Moscovien.Amsterdam, Jan Claesz ten Hoorn, 1677. 4º. With etched frontispiece and 6 etched folding plates by Romeyn de Hooghe. 19th-century boards. € 9500

First edition of a valuable account detailing a Dutch embassy to Russia (1675–1676). The objective was to gain Russian participation in the anti-Swedish and anti-French alliance, and Koenraad Klenk, with his expert knowledge of Russian language and culture, was the ideal choice to lead the embassy. The mission was subsidized with more than 50,000 guilders, an extraordinary amount which was even exceeded during the journey. Although the embassy was well received and the Russians were showered with gifts, Klenk failed to persuade the Tsar to enter into war with Sweden. The six impressively evocative plates by Romeyn de Hooghe are typical examples of his rich allegorical imagery.Final leaves restored, with the missing text supplied in manuscrip, some soling, binding worn. An excellent source for the history of Russia and its foreign relations during the reign of Tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich.

First edition of one of the best early Dutch books on Russia by Jan Danckaert. It is divided into two parts, the first part deals with the history of the country, while the second part discusses its religion, customs, laws, costumes, etc., including several chapters on Russian warfare. After Danckaert had insulted Remonstrant minister Johannes Wtenbogaert he fled the Netherlands. He travelled around England and Scandinavia, before joining the service of Swedish general Jacob de la Gardie, to assist the Russian army in their fights against Poland. He visited Russia again a few years later, as secretary to Baron Van Luyt, a Dutch envoy to Russia. With a library and deaccession stamp. Sllightly browned, final leaf restored on the (blank) back. Binding slightly rubbed along the extremities, but otherwise in good condition.

Rare first Russian edition of Darwin’s On the origin of species, translated by Sergei A. Rachinskii, professor of botany at Moscow University. Like the first English edition it includes one plate, showing Darwin’s famous branching tree of life, an icon of his theory of evolution. Darwin was both very popular and very influential in Russia. The present translator published an article presenting some of these ideas early in 1863, calling Darwin’s Origin “one of the most brilliant books ever to be written in the natural sciences” (Vucinich, pp. 18–19). It helped give birth to a new generation of natural scientists in Russia whose students included the great Ivan Pavlov. But in Russia Darwin’s influence went far beyond science. It inspired anti-czarist democratic political movements as well as Marx, Engels, Lenin, Trotsky and Stalin. Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky also refer to Darwin and his ideas became firmly imbedded in Russian culture generally.Foxed throughout, severely in a couple quires but not affecting the plate. Otherwise in good condition. It probably lacks an initial blank leaf. First Russian translation of Darwin’s Origin, inaugurating a hey-day of natural science in Russia.

18th-century sale of bonds funding planters in Suriname and the Danish West Indies, issued under supervision of unscrupulous fund managers

41. DOM, Cornelis (broker). Amsterdam, Hendrik Willem Dronsberg, 1771. 1º broadsheet (59.5 × 48.5 cm). € 4850

Only copy located of a broadsheet announcing the sale of bonds funding plantation owners in Suriname and the Danish West Indies sold by the Cornelis Dom, a broker specialized in bonds, loans, realty and furniture. These bonds were issued during the height of these investments and here sold just two years before the Amsterdam stock market crash of 1773 which dealt a severe blow to the plantation economy. These funds were established under the supervision of a fund manager, in this case Herman van de Poll & Co., G.H. de Wilde and Abraham ter Borch & sons, primarily funding new coffee plantations of inexperienced planters, including some who spent a large sum on luxurious accommodations. But Van de Poll let the planters’ debts rise far above the total amount mortgaged. The debtors had to pay interest on the entire debt while the investors only received interest on the amount mortgaged, resulting in unaccounted profit for the fund manager Van de Poll, who was supposed to receive only the transaction commission.Formerly folded in eight and some minor creases in the margins, otherwise in very good condition especially considering its ephemeral nature.

Entomologists in the network of freemasons between the American and the French Revolutions

42. FOR ST ER, Johann Reinhold. [Letter to an unnamed fellow freemason in Braunschweig, probably Ferdinand, Herzog von Braunschweig-Lünenburg or someone in his inner circle].Halle (Saale), 9 August 1781. 4º. Autograph letter in German, signed, written in brown ink on laid paper in a clear German hand, with foreign words and names in a Latin hand. € 12 500

Signed autograph letter from Johann Reinhold Forster (1729–1798), professor of natural history at the University of Halle, member of the Royal Societies of London and Göttingen and very active freemason, to a fellow mason at Braunschweig, passing on information about the London goldsmith and entomologist Dru Drury (1725–1804) and his Illustrations of natural history (1770–1782), explicitly noting that Moses Harris engraved the butter-flies for it and that the third volume was in press. It also makes reference to many other figures in the English scientific circles, including Joseph Banks and Henry Smeathman. The footnote refers to the engraved portrait of Linnaeus and to the 1781 supplement to his Mantissa plantarum, published at Braunschweig. After Johann Reinhold and his son Georg returned from Cook’s second voyage to the South Seas (1772–1775), they joined the masonic lodge Les neuf soers in Paris, established in 1776, where Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, Jérôme de Lalande and many other leading intellectuals met and kept in touch.Formerly folded horizontally and vertically for posting and later mounted on a stub (with traces surviving along the main fold). Slightly browned and with minor wear along the old folds, and with some small ink stains, affecting but not obscuring a few words. Still in good condition. A detailed letter giving insights into the important scientific and masonic networks in Europe between the American and the French Revolution.

Calculating the perfect shapes for the construction of merchant ships, with 17 lithographed plates

44. F U NCH, Diderich Hansteen. Afhandling om coffardiskibes construction.Copenhagen, printed by Bianco Lunos for the author, 1842–1843. 2 parts in 1 volume. Large 4º (32.5 × 24 cm). Also with 7 double-page tables in the first part and 2 double-page tables in the second part. Somewhat later tree-pattern tanned sheepskin, richly gold-tooled spine, with the original gray printed wrappers on paper-boards bound in. € 6000

Rare first and only edition of a work on the construction of merchant ships by the royal Danish shipbuilder Diderich Hansteen Funch (1791–1856). Funch was both a master shipbuilder at the royal dockyard, and a reputable author, known for several books on shipbuilding. The work is divided into two parts, the first covering the ship’s hull and the second its masting and rigging. It “contains a complete system for the determination of all of a ship’s calculated figures as well as its shape. The latter can be ascertained by consulting a table and following certain rules. Ships designed according to Funch’s system had parabolic water-lines and curves; all the curves were thus mathematically determined. Funch’s system seems to have influenced ship design in the provinces from about 1830 to 1845–50. Sheer draughts from the period show that the ships had parabolic curves as well as the fish shape prescribed by Funch. The interdependent proportions of the hull are also recognisable as the ones stipulated by Funch” (Nielsen). With the bookplate of the Swedish shipbuilder Nils Ljungzell (1885–1964) on pastedown, library stamp on title-page and a deaccession stamp on the title-pages of both parts. Slightly browned, some occa-sional minor spots, and a minor water stain in the foot margin of the second part (not affecting the plates). Good copy.

The first part describes and illustrates numerous aspects of shipbuilding and rigging, including timber work and framing, knot making and. The second part is a dictionary of terminology used for ship parts and details, as well as for the sailing itself, including the whole typical seamen’s vocabulary.Funch was one of the most important builders and designers of warships in Denmark of his time, building both sailing vessels and paddle steamers. “Ships designed according to Funch’s system had parabolle waterlines and curves; all the curves were thus mathemat-ically determined. Funch’s system seems to have influenced ship design in the provinces from about 1830 to 1845–50” (Nielsen). He described his ideas on shipbuilding in several books for which he also prepared the drawings. With the blind library stamp of ‘Det Lergenborgske bibliothek’ and two written shels-marks on the title-page. Early 18th-century sprinkled tanned sheepskin, gold-tooled spine. € 12 500

Last and rarest (1640) issue of the first (and only early) edition of a richly illustrated and extremely interesting and important account of a Dutch embassy to Russia in the years 1615 to 1616: an essential primary source for any study of 17th-century Russia (and Scandinavia). The 23 etched views are among the earliest of northwest Russia and its border areas. It was first published in 1619 by Aert Meuris and both the text and the illustrations are here still in the 1619 printing, with only the two title-pages newly printed (in spite of the title-page’s “second printing, enlarged and improved”!), so that the beautifully drawn and finely etched illustrations remain crisp and clear.Sweden and Russia had been at war since 1609 and both sides suffered severe losses in the 1615 siege of Pskov (which weakened Sweden’s position). The English ambassador in Moscow, John Merrick, initiated peace negotiations and King Gustav II Adolf and Tsar Michael I together asked the States General of the

Dutch Republic to send an embassy to Novgorod to assist them. The peace they brokered, leading to the 1617 treaty of Stolbovo, was to last nearly a hundred years. Anthonis Goeteeris (ca. 1574–1660?), bailiff of the Hoge Raad, accompanied the embassy as treasurer and, being a skilled artist, also made numerous drawings. The embassy travelled first by ship to Reval (now Tallin, Estonia) then overland via Narva (Estonia) to the regions around Pskov, Novgorod and Staraja Russa. On their return Goeteeris wrote the present account of the voyage and embassy, one of the most accurate accounts of 17th-century Russia, with not only historical and statistical information, but also descriptions of the Russian cities, villages and countryside, as well as the customs and habits of the people. He vividly describes the hardships encountered during the difficult and dangerous journey, as well as the horrifying desolation of the Russian countryside and people after many years of war, famine and disease. He illustrated the whole with the drawings he made during the voyage and embassy. With a small tear into the text of 1 leaf (repaired), a small stain in the margin of the engraved title-page and an occasional faint water stain, but still in good condition. The hinges are cracked, the head of the spine chipped and some corners slightly damaged (with a couple small repairs), but the binding is otherwise good. Rare first and only early edition of an important account of northwest Russia in 1615 and 1616, with 23 excellent etched views.

Much expanded second edition of a finely illustrated work on garden design and layout. The first 37 pages contain the Essai, which refers often to the illustrations bound in at the end of the work. The Count was also patron to Johannes Kankel, who established the first printing office in Visingsborg ca. 1667, for he calls it the Count’s printing office in the imprint of the present book. The inking is inconsistent. With extensive annotations in the margins and endleaves, at least one arly owner’s name, and a later armorial bookplate. Somewhat browned and with some marginal stains. Binding rubbed and dirty. A good copy of a very rare guide to household pharmacology and medicine, especially interesting as a thoroughly local production (author, patron, library and printer).

A rare, beautiful, accurate and influential world atlas with 119 very large maps (most 54 × 65 cm & plate size ca. 48 × 60 cm, but a few larger folding), all but 2 coloured in outline by a contemporary hand. Many of the maps include fine pictorial decorations, inset maps or city plans, coats of arms or decorative cartouches. Nearly all are by the great Paris cartographer Guillaume de l’Isle (1675–1726). The present copy includes Philippe Durell’s rare 1740 map of the 1739 naval Battle of Portobello in Panama, where British forces defeated the Spanish and took the city of Portobello, giving them control of the strategically important bay. This map does not appear in any of the contents lists for the various editions of the present atlas and Koeman does not record it in any atlas at all, so the atlas’s owner probably either acquired the separately published map and inserted it in the atlas or had Covens and Mortier add it to the normal contents. Henry Popple’s six maps of British North America are also of special interest and among the latest maps in the album, not yet included in the list of contents for the 1742 edition but advertised on 6 February 1742 to appear in a few days. The set comprises an overview map, 4 maps that could be assembled to form one large wall map, and a double-page plate with 19 detail maps of ports and islands. In addition to the modern maps, the atlas includes 16 maps at the end that attempt to show the world during antiquity and in the Middle Ages. Romeyn de Hooghe “c[ommissarius] r[egius] et j[uris] u[triusque] d[octor]” originally drew and executed the lovely allegorical frontispiece for Pieter Mortier’s atlases in 1694, with a dedication to the Louis, Duke of Burgundy (later known as Le Petit Dauphin). Michael Bischoff singles it out as “an absolutely over-the-top highpoint” of the art of the emblematic frontispiece in early modern atlasses. Koeman locates only one copy of the atlas, but notes another in a 1963 auction that might be the present copy (we have not seen the catalogue). With a tear along the fold at the foot of 1 folding map (running 1 cm into the map image), and a tear in the fore-edge margin of 2 text leaves (just entering the text block) but otherwise in very good condition and with large margins, retaining many deckles on the fore-edge and only slightly trimmed at the head and foot. The chemicals used to mottle the calf binding have eaten into the surface of the leather, the hinges are cracked and there are chips (mostly in the spine and at the corners), but most of the tooling remains clear. A magnificent hand-coloured atlas of the world, with 119 very large maps, mostly by De l’Isle.

Contemporary brown half calf, gold-tooled spine with red morocco title-label, marbled sides. € 1950

First edition, in the original French, of a very detailed work on Russian trade and commerce, published anon-ymously but ascribed to Pierre de Marbault (died 1781), though some attribute it to Marquis de Barbe-Marbois. The text is divided into 12 chapters. The first two chapters deal with Russia’s national trade and commerce, while the others are devoted to Russia’s export and interna-tional trade. Individual chapters deal with Russia’s trade with China, maritime commerce, trade in and around the Caspian Sea, the Black Sea, and the Baltic Sea, and a very extensive chapter on Russia’s trade with France. Chapter 10 is devoted to Russia’s coinage and currency, chapter 11 describes Russian commerce customs, and chapter 12 deals with Russian discoveries in and trade with America, especially Alaska and Canada.Margins of the half-title and pages 233–238 slightly frayed, not affecting the text. An abridged Swedish edition of John Meares’s voyages, with a preface signed “Samuel Ödmann”. John Meares (1756?–1809) is best known for his role in the Nootka crisis, but his account is also of Hawaiian interest. In 1786 he sailed from Calcutta to the North Pacific and after having explored part of the coast of Alaska he sailed for China by way of Hawaii. From China he embarked on a fur trading voyage to Nootka Sound, spending the summer trading furs along the coast of British Columbia and wintering in the Hawaiian Islands. On the island of Kauai he picked up Tianna, a Hawaiian chief, and brought him back to Canton (China).Owner’s inscription on endleaf. The binding shows some wear, otherwise in very good condition.

Autograph letter in Latin, signed by Melanchthon to the Protestant theologian Sebastian Boetius in Halle, to recommend the young priest Christian Hertwig junior. Boetius (1515–1573), who had studied under Luther and Melanchthon at Wittenberg, succeeded Justus Jonas as superintendent of Halle and founded the famous Marienbibliothek, still in existence. In his letter, Melanchthon reminds his former student that their minds often run in the same channel, as their letters show, and describes the role of the ideal pastor. He recommends Hertwig for such a position, both on the strength of his doctrines and on that of his moral fibre. Slightly browned; traces of folds. In fine condition.

Contemporary half calf. € 5000

Rare first Swedish edition of George Mortimer’s Observations and remarks. The present translation is slightly abridged and was probably made after Carl Fr. Landell’s German version, which was augmented with a preface and some footnotes. Mortimer narrates the voyage of the Mercury, which visitied New Holland, Van Diemens Land, Tahiti, Alaska, and Canton (China), and Hawaii. The ship anchored at Kealakekua Bay, and the narrative includes notes on James Cook’s death here in 1779. The book further contains a very inter-esting account of the Russian establishment at Unalaska, and of the collecting of sealskins and oil on Amsterdam Island. The Mercury was in fact Gustaf III, a privateer sailing under the Swedish flag sent by the King of Sweden to attack Russian fur trade settlements in the North Pacific, during the war between Russia and Sweden in 1788–1790.The work is bound with the Swedish edition of Gaspard Risbeck’s entertaining account of travels through Germany. Some foxing, binding rubbed, otherwise in good condition.

Only copy located of a 1632 ordinance and signalling instructions for convoys to Scandinavia, filled in for a 1633 voyage

With a woodcut title vignette of a ship under full sail, flying the flags of the Dutch Republic (seven provinces) and the Amsterdam Admiralty. The printed text leaves several blank spaces for names and other information to be filled in, and in the present copy they were filled in and dated 18 April 1633, appar-ently for the schipper (ship’s captain) Marten Pietersz. and naming various captains and Admiralty officials involved. Early brown paper wrappers. € 1500

Only copy located of the first edition of a 1632 ordinance concerning convoys sailing from the Friesian islands to Scandinavia and back, with instructions concerning signals (with flags by day and lanterns by night). It gives the origins and destinations as Het Vlie (the channel between the island Vlieland and Terschelling) or Marsdiep (the channel between Texel and the mainland) and Öresund (the strait between Denmark and Sweden) or Norway. It was printed in part as a form, with blank spaces that were supposed to be filled in with the relevant names, exact destination and other information (including the passwords the ships were to use to prove they belong to the convoy) for a particular voyage, dated and witnessed. The present (apparently unique) copy has been filled in and dated 18 April 1633.The data filled in in the present copy show the convoy was sailing to “Schagen” (Skagen, Denmark). The ship’s captains who agreed to the terms of the ordinance were Hendrik Indecop and Pieter de VriesAll similar ordinances are extremely rare, often surviving in only one copy or known only from later reprints, but we have found no other copy of any edition of the 1632 ordinance for ships to Scandinavia. In very good condition, and with important manuscript additions, as noted above.

Rare Swedish edition of Norris’ journey to Africa and defence of slavery

64. NOR R IS, Robert. Resa På Neger-kusten Til Kongl. Hofvet i Dahomej.Gothenburg, Sam. Norberg, 1792. 8º. Old paper boards. € 800

A very rare translation into Swedish of Norris’ travels in the West Guinean country Dahomey. Robert Norris (d. 1791) was a slave trader. In February 1772, he visited the court in Dahomey, and provides his readers with curious and horrifying details of a mass execution taking place as part of various “customs” or royal ceremonies. “In 1788, when, owing to the vigorous action of the advocates of abolition, a committee of the privy council was appointed to inquire into the slave question, Norris was delegated to lay before it the views of the Liverpool trade, a circumstance which probably led to the publication of his … His account of the slave trade is a defence of slavery” (DNB). Additionally, the Swedish translation contains many interesting notes by Samuel Ödman (1750–1829).With embossed library stamp on first endleaf. Some traces on title-page and last leaf of earlier binding. Spine of the boards slightly soiled and the top a bit damaged. A very good copy.

Life-size watercolour of a great bustard (Otis tarda), ca. 1710/20

65. [OR N IT HOLOGY]. [Great bustard (Otis tarda)].[Northwest Germany?, ca. 1710/20]. Watercolour drawing on 2½ sheets of Imperial laid paper (129 × 57 cm as assembled). € 3500

A life-size watercolour drawing of a Great bustard (Otis tarda) cock, hanging from a hook by a cord threaded through its nostrils, presumably awaiting the cook’s assis-tants, who would have plucked it. The skilful artist remains unidentified. The drawing itself, from the hook (which bleeds off the paper at the head) to the tips of the claws, measures 126 cm and the bustard itself measures 110 cm from the tip of its beak to the tip of its tail. Its plumage is predominantly light brown, with black stripes on the back and with the breast and the lower parts of the wings white. The hens were much smaller than the cocks, which are the heaviest flying birds in the world and the heaviest indigenous birds of any kind in Europe today. The drawing probably comes from the estate (the kitchen?) of a nobleman. The great bustard has become rare in northern Europe, with only a few hundred, largely confined to small parts of East Germany and western Poland, but there is still a larger population spread throughout Hungary. It is classified as vulnerable worldwide. In the early 18th century it had a much greater range, including much of Germany and England. In 1797 Thomas Bewick noted that it made “excellent eating ... as excellent a repast as our own domestic poultry, or even as the [American] turkey”. He therefore lamented that it had not been domesticated and foresaw that hunting might lead to its “total extinction” in England.Formerly folded. With a small worm hole in the neck of the turkey and a slightly larger one in the blank paper next to the neck, and an occasional minor tear on the old folds (some professionally reinforced on the back), but otherwise in very good condition. A magnificent ca. 1710/20 watercolour drawing of a Great bustard, depicted life-size.

Two journeys to China described by two pupils of Linnaeus

66. OSBECK, Peter and Olof TOR É N . A voyage to China and the East Indies, by Peter Osbeck ... Together with a voyage to Suratte by Olof Toreen ... and an account of the Chinese husbandry by Captain Charles Gustavus Eckeberg. Translated from the German, by John Reinhold Forster ... To which are added, a faunula and flora Senensis.London, Benjamin White, 1771. 2 volumes. 8vo. With 14 full-page engraved plates. Contemporary gold-tooled calf. € 3500

First edition of Johann Reinhold Forster’s English translation of an account of two Swedish voyages to China and the East Indies, the first by the Swedish minister, botanist and explorer Peter (Pehr) Osbeck (1723–1805) and the second by the Swedish naturalist Olof Torén (1718–1753). Osbeck’s journal contains interesting observations on the languages, cultures and domestic economy of the area’s he visited, but the work’s main value lies in the sections on foreign plants and fish, depicted in the engravings. Toreen’s account of his voyage to India and China, in the form of letters, is followed by Eckeberg’s Short account of the Chinese husbandry, and a catalogue of Chinese animals and plants with their Linnaean nomenclature. The fine plates primarily depict plants.Forster translated from the German version, which had appeared in 1765, and dedicated his translation to Thomas Pennant, dated Warrington, 1 December 1770. The preface by Osbeck is dated Stockholm, 25 April 1757. Neatly re-backed with the original spine laid down. Very good set.

Spigel der alderschoonste courtisanen deses tyts. The loocking-glass of the fairest courtiers of these tymes.[Utrecht?, Crispijn de Passe the elder], 1630. Oblong small 4º (14 × 18.5 cm). With letterpress title-page in French, engraved title-page (plate size 11.2 × 15.1 cm) in French, Dutch and English and 40 unnumbered oval portraits (8 × 6 cm), 2 to each leaf, including (as usual in this edition) 1 repeat, each of the 40 with a 4-line French verse printed letterpress below. 17th-century limp sheepskin parchment. In a modern green morocco box with the spine faded to brown. € 39 500

Extremely rare first edition (in French) of a series of portraits of courtesans from France, the Dutch Republic, the Spanish Low Countries, England, Italy, Spain, Bohemia, Denmark, Poland, the German states and probably elsewhere, engraved by Crispijn de Passe the younger and published by his father. The majority of the “femmes de joye” (as the note to the reader calls them) are fash-ionably dressed ladies of the courts, but there are also servants and simply dressed Dutch women (from Purmerend and Wormer for example). Many show décolletage and one blatantly displays her bare breasts. Each portrait has the title (the courtesan’s name or description) in the plate above and a four-line French verse printed letterpress below, giving further information about her. Many appear to be real people, some referred to only by their first names or initials. The verse sometimes adds enough information that a reader might have been able to identify or find them. A trilingual edition–French, Dutch and German–also appeared in 1630 using

the same plates, but the portraits have had numbers added, some have had their titles revised and they appear in a different order. The content of the Dutch and German verses differs from that of the French ones, so none is directly translated from another. With an early owner’s inscription at the head of the letterpress title-page, an early manuscript note in English on the back cover, and modern engraved armorial book plates of John Harrison and Hermann Marx. In very good condition, with a marginal stain in last 7 plates (crossing the plate edge in 1, but not reaching the printed image) and a marginal tear repaired.

Rare first and only edition of an 1800 revision of a 1792 treaty between Russia and Prussia

68. PAV E L (PAU L) I , Tsar. [Title in Russian followed on the same page by:] Traité d’alliance défensive conclu entre leurs majestés, Empereur de toutes les Russies et le Roi de Prusse le 16/28 Juillet 1800.St Petersburg, Imperial Printing Office, 1801. 2º (29.5 × 21.5 cm). Treaty between Russia and Prussia in Russian and French in 2 parallel columns in cyrillic (left) and roman (right) types. Loose bifolia (and 1 singleton leaf). € 2500

Rare first and only edition, in Russian and French, of a defensive alliance concluded at St Petersburg between Tsar Pavel I of Russia and King Friedrich Wilhelm III of Prussia on 28 July 1800 (16 July by the Julian calendar used in Russia until the Revolution), revising that concluded on 27 July/7 August 1792 following the Polish-Russian War. The 1792 treaty allied was drawn up when the parties were subjugating the once great and powerful Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, dissolved with its third partition in 1795. Nine months after Napoleon seized power in a coup d’état, these allies faced a much more dangerous foe. In spite of the greatly different political and military context, the treaty largely repeated the XIV articles of the 1792 treaty, but added a new article VIII (concerning the governance and provisioning of the army) and revised articles I, VII, XXII–XIV (this last group becoming XXIII–XV). We have found no other copy outside the Russian State Library in Moscow.Slightly browned and with an occasional minor marginal stain or tattered edge and the gutter folds somewhat weak, but otherwise in very good condition. Rare first and only edition (in Russian and French) of an 1800 treaty between Russia and Prussia, revising their 1792 treaty in the new political situation.

First edition of a well-illustrated account of Phipps’s arctic expedition

69. PHIPPS, Constantine John. A voyage towards the North Pole undertaken by His Majesty’s command 1773.London, printed by William Bowyer and John Nichols for J. Nourse, 1774. Large 4º (29 × 23.5 cm). With 15 large double-page and larger folding engraved plates with maps, coastal profiles, ice flows, diagrams, and illustrations of equipment and marine animals, and many letterpress tables in the text (and 11 on folding leaves signed as separate quires). Contemporary calf, rebacked, modern endpapers. € 3750

First edition of Phipps’s account of his expedition to the Arctic. The expedition with the ships Racehorse and Carcass sailed north by way of the Shetlands, reaching the coast of Spitsbergen on 29 June 1773. They passed Magdalena Hoek in early July, but were unable to penetrate the pack ice. A second attempt, reaching 80°37’ N latitude, also failed. Notwithstanding this failure, the crew was successful in making numerous scientific observations and discovering several new species of animals, among them the ivory gull (Pugophilu eburnea). “Phipps was also incidentally the first to give an adequate description of the polar bear (Thalarctos maritimus Phipps) and to give it a scientific binominal” (Savours). The crew included the future Admiral Horatio Nelson as midshipman and Olaudah Equiano, a former slave whose autobiography would cause a huge sensation. The first couple leaves slightly soiled in the upper margins, a small and faint waterstain in the last 50 leaves, some occasional spots and a couple minor smudges, otherwise in very good condition, with large margins. The binding with restorations along the extremities and rebacked. A lovely and well illustrated account of an important arctic voyage.

Contemporary black half sheepskin. € 9500

Convolute of three rare Marxist publications, all banned in Russia at the time, by the Gruppa Osvobozhdenie Truda (association for the emancipation of labour), the first Russian-language Marxist political organization, based in Geneva. The group was very active in translating, publishing and distributing Marxist works into Russian. Besides a translation of Karl Marx’s Poverty of philosophy, orig-inally published in French in 1847, the convolute contains two works by one of Osvobozhdenie Truda’s founders: Georgi Plekhanov. Ferdinand Lassal is the first edition of an unfinished biography of the German socialist Ferdinand Lassalle, which never went beyond the present part 1. Nashi raznoglasiia is the first edition of Plekhanov’s Our differences, one of his principal works. According to an early Soviet historian, this work contained “practically all the basic ideas that formed the stock-in-trade of Russian Marxism up to the end of the century” (Baron). Plekhanov argued that the organization of a revolutionary movement among the Russian peasantry was impos-sible. Instead, the proletariat should ally with the bourgeoisie, in which it would achieve hegemony, in a political revolution against absolutism. For this to happen, the proletariat would have to become class conscious through explanations provided by the socialist intelligentsia. Nashi raznoglasiia was first published in 1885, but the first edition has the year 1884 on the title-page.The Russian Marxist theoretician and revolutionary Georgi Plekhanov (1856–1918) is often called the father of Russian Marxism. As one of the founders of the Association for the Emancipation of Labour, he provided its theoretical framework, writing two drafts for the Russian Social Democrats. From the Second International (1889) onwards, the group represented the Russian Social Democrats.

Though ultimately positive of the outcome of the Russian February Revolution (1917), Plekhanov was an outspoken opponent of Lenin for the latter’s willingness to leap over the stage of capitalist development in advocating a socialist revolution in agrarian Russia. With ownership inscriptions and some underscoring. Signed autograph letter from Redouté acknowledging payment from the Paris bookseller L. Debure for Les Roses

73. R E DOU T É , Pierre-Joseph. [Letter acknowledging payment from the Paris bookseller Debure for Les Roses, part 30].Paris, 18 February 1824. 4º (24.5 × 18.5 cm). Autograph letter, signed, written in brown ink on paper, with a note in a different hand recording a related payment. € 6500

A signed autograph letter by Pierre-Joseph Redouté, acknowledging his reciept of 30 francs from “Monsieur Debure libraire” for the 30th and final part of Les Roses, Redouté’s most famous work, which was published in installments between 1817 and 1824. This must be the Paris bookseller Jean-Jacques Debure (1765–1853) or his younger brother Marie-Jacques Debure (1767–1847), who were “libraires du Roi et de la Bibliotheque du Roi” from 1821 to 1830. The book was printed and published by Firmin Didot. Oddly, an addition by a different hand below left notes “payé le 26 fevrier” (paid 26 February). Perhaps Redouté is writing to Firmin Didot and he was to reimburse Debure for this expense. It in any case suggests that Debure is not merely buying copies of the book to sell but was involved in the publication of Redouté’s Les Roses in some manner. In fine condition, with only a small piece of paper stuck to the top right corner, not approaching the text.

It describes and depicts the human body in its details and in its entirety in every aspect conceiv-able. The book also discusses magic, in the strict sense of the word, revealing many marvellous secrets, such as the occult properties of saliva, urine, sperm, etc.“The erudition demonstrated by the author is really quite extraordinary” (Raybould) including metoposcopy (the interpretation of facial wrinkles for divination!). An appendix adds short accounts of several subjects, including “hieroglyphia” and “androgyni”, along with short works by other authors: Lactantius Firmianus’s “De opificio Dei”, Coelius Rhodiginus on humanity, and a long “Ode” to humanity: “Considerationes patheticae de creatione, & dignitate hominis” based on Trismegistus, Plato, Coelius and other ancient sources. With a faint marginal water stain and a couple small rust spots in the paper, but otherwise in fine condition. The binding shows a few scratches, cuts and stains, small cracks at the head and foot of the hinges and 1 sewing support broken at the hinge, but is still in good condition. He was appointed court architect in 1733. In 1735 the new Danish king, Christian VI, made Thurah a grant specifically for the purpose of compiling Den Danske Vitruvius, but he died only months before the first volume appeared, so Thurah dedicated the book to his young son and successor. 78. [TOR I N US, Albanus (ed).]. De re medica huic volumini insunt ...(Colophon: Basel, Andreas Cratander, 1528). 2º. First edition of a collection of four medical works, compiled by the Swiss physician Albanus Torinus (1489–1550). The main part of the work consists of De re medica, also known as Medicina Pliniana, a very popular medical text during the Middle Ages. Compiled in the fourth century by an anonymous author, it is generally ascribed to Plinius Valerianus, also called pseudo-Plin-ius, since it mainly derived from Pliny the Elder’s Historia naturalis. Consisting of five books, it gives various medicines and treatments for different diseases, ailments, wounds, tumours etc. Besides Pliny the Elder, the work is heavily based on the works of Galen and Dioscorides, all highly esteemed in the Arabic world. The work also contains three other medical works from different authors. “The contents are all either spurious works or later compilations from genuine works of the authors to whom they are attributed” (Durling). It starts with

an introduction to “the art of healing”, ascribed to Soranus of Ephesus. The second text is by Oribasius, a Greek medical writer from the fourth century BC. According to Durling, the text is an extract from the first chapter of his Euporista ad Eunapium. The work closes with a botanical text, De virtutibus herbarum, ascribed to Lucius Apuleius Madaurensis, but written by an anonymous author from the fourth century, known as Pseudo-Apuleius. In one of the manuscripts Torinus used, the text was ascribed to the famous Italian physician Antonio Musa Brassavola (1500–1555), an expert on the works of Galen and heavily influenced by his work. The editor of the work, Torinus, was appointed professor of practical medicine at the University of Basel after receiving the degree of doctor in medicine in Montpellier. He translated many Greek texts into Latin, or Latin works into the vernacular, including Vesalius’s De humani corporis fabrica. From the library of the Russian tsars, with its letterpress library label with shelf number on paste-down and the coat of arms on the spine. With the place and date of printing added in manuscript on the title-page. Paper on boards slightly chafed, binding with traces of use along the extremities, corners bumped and spine restored. First five leaves with a minor water stain, but otherwise a very good copy.

Early photographic facsimile of Amerigo Vespucci’s report, one of 10 copies printed on vellum

79. V E SPUCCI, Amerigo. Be [! = De] ora Antarctica per regem Portugallie pridem inventa.[Paris, Tross, 1872]. Facsimile of the 1505 edition with 1 diagram con-structed from rules and type. Printed on vellum. Wrapper made from 18th-century French marbled paper backed with (and the book inter-leaved with) 19th-century wove paper. € 4500

A photographic facsimile of the Strasbourg Latin edition (1505) of Amerigo Vespucci’s account of what is usually called his third voyage (1501/02). Amerigo Vespucci (1454–1512), who gave his name to America, sailed from Lisbon to Brazil and down the coast to the bay at what is now Rio de Janeiro and to Cape Frio in 1501/02. He notes in the present report that the land he is exploring is not Asia as had been expected, but an extremely large continent previously unknown, and he sailed further south along its coast than any earlier European voyager to that time. For this reason he calls the region “Antarctica”. The upper woodcut on the title-page is one of the earliest attempts to depict indigenous Americans in general and Brazilians in particular. In very good condition, with the first leaf and last leaf slightly wrinkled and with an occasional light brown stain on the blank final page or in the margins. The marbled wrapper is rubbed and has new sewing. A rare early photographic facsimile, printed on vellum, of a key record of the earliest exploration of America in general and Brazil in particular.
