Students Helping Seniors

F airview recently received a

generous grant from AT&T that

enabled Fairview to enhance a decade-long

intergenerational program between the

students at Ella T. Grasso Southeastern

Technical High School and our residents.

Students from Grasso Tech visit Fairview

weekly to work with residents and help

them utilize the newest technology such

as iPads to send pictures and emails to

family members. They are even learning to

play various games on the devices. Special

thanks to Senator Andy Maynard for

joining us as we celebrated over ten years

of success with this program. It received

coverage in The Day and Mystic River Press, both

articles can be found on Fairview’s website

at www.fairviewct.org/News

Student Rasal Rahman, Fairview CEO and Administrator James Rosenman, Bill Turner of AT&T, resident Natalie Naylor, Shawn Carpenter from Grasso Tech, student Joshua Thomas, student Curtis McNeil and resident Eliza Holmberg.

Sen. Andrew Maynard looks on as the Grasso Tech students teach residents how to use iPads.

Creamery Move (continued from page 1)

“While the planning took months, the lift and move happened in

less than a few minutes,” shares Sandra Hawes, Sales Director at

Thames Edge at Fairview. “Resources have been set aside to restore

the building.”

“We’ve relocated the creamery building to a great spot on the site,”

added Terry Terranga, Project Manager for KBE Construction of

Farmington, the construction firm and project managers.

Design Caffeinated Thinking

Reflections

A nnually, Fairview has an event

to recognize individuals who

have provided invaluable assistance

to Fairview through selfless gifts of

time, financial assistance or other

extraordinary contributions. This

event is called the Fairview Medal

Dinner and this spring, Fairview

is proud to present two special

individuals with the Fairview Medal: Charley

“Hank” Henry Lucas and Mary Sepowitz, LPN. These two join a

list of exceptional individuals who have dedicated themselves to

Fairview: Edie Kalin, Billy Joe Foreman, Leah Genido, Vincent

Barbieri, Dr. Edward McDermott, George Ververis, Jr., David

Reindel, Richard Campbell, Pat Bowden Fialkosky, Jim Malloy,

Senator Andy Maynard and David Brown.

It is important also to recognize the tremendous employees that

work hard every day to provide an excellent experience for the

individuals we serve. As a part of our commitment to employee

recognition, we have established a group called the ROCK

(Recognizing Outstanding Care and Kindness) Committee. This

committee develops and fundraises for programs which recognize

Fairview’s employees. Examples of this are the ROCK Star

nominations; these can be filled out by anyone who would like to

recognize an employee that has gone above and beyond.

Nomination forms are conveniently located at the front desk and

the nurses stations. Since the beginning of the program in July of

last year we have received over 200 ROCK Star nominations. I

encourage you to submit a ROCK nomination if an employee has

gone above and beyond your expectations!

James Rosenman, CEO & Administrator

Partnering with Groton Public Library

F airview has been working with the Groton Public Library

since fall of 2013. We have several programs that we have

been involved with through the library, including:

Homebound Delivery Service: Books and other library materials

delivered right to Fairview every other Friday directly to our

residents through the recreation department.

Book Bundles: The Recreation Director submits a monthly

calendar to Kim Balentine, Homebound Delivery Service Director

and she chooses a selection of materials including books, CD’s and

movies. These items supplement our activities.

Senior Stories: The Groton Public Library Librarian comes to

Fairview once a month and leads a story along with a craft in the

first floor dining room with a group of our residents.

Reach Out & Read: This group is run by Librarian Kim Balentine

for residents who are no longer able to read on their own. Once a

month, Kim reads selected materials to a group of residents on the

2nd floor. She also encourages reminiscing during this time and

inspires the residents to get involved during

this group.

Our residents enjoy these programs and look

forward to their visits and groups. These

programs have become quite popular and

touch so many of our residents.

Fairview residents participating in the Senior Stories Library program create a Chinese New Year dragon to celebrate the Chinese New Year.
