Reflections

W hat a year of tremendous

progress and excitement

2014 has been at Fairview!

We have neared completion of

Thames Edge at Fairview, Phase 1,

and construction on the second

phase is beginning this month. The

clubhouse is nearing completion—

this will feature a modern gym and a

soon-to-be announced restaurant.

In the nursing facility, we have been busy with modernization and

area enhancement projects such as the new PT/OT/Speech area,

recreation therapy space, multiple apartment refurbishments in

Fellowship Manor, an enhanced conference room, the beginning

of planned room refurbishments, the auditorium renovation, and

improvements to some clinical areas such as bathrooms.

The new memory care program, Guided Journeys, is operational on

our second floor. We are one of the few programs in Connecticut

to have a certified Music and Memory program—to name just

one of many innovative ways that we improve the quality of life

for our residents. We are striving to become one of the most

comprehensive skilled-nursing based memory care programs in the

state and we are well on our way toward that goal.

Fairview was named “Employer of the Year” for 2014 by the

Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce. This is an honor and

recognition of the excellent employees that provide outstanding

care and service every single day.

We had a successful fundraising year with our raffle and auction—

and we look forward to the Art of Chocolate event in January.

Thank you to all who support and dedicate themselves to Fairview

in so many ways to help make us a world-class organization. On

behalf of Fairview, Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut, I wish you

Very Happy Holidays!

Fairview Screens Award-Winning Documentary Alive Inside is a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to

reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity.

Alive Inside won the Audience Award at the 2014 Sundance Film

Festival. Filmmaker Michael Rossato-Bennett chronicles the

astonishing experiences of individuals around the country who

have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening

to music. His camera reveals the unique human connection

we find in music and how its healing power can triumph where

prescription medication falls short. Fairview had the opportunity

to share this film on November 12.

This moving documentary follows social worker Dan Cohen,

founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he

demonstrates music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore

a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. Rossato-Bennett

visits family members who have witnessed the miraculous effects of

personalized music on their loved ones, and offers illuminating

interviews with experts including renowned neurologist and best-

selling author Oliver Sacks (Musicophilia: Tales of Music and the

Brain) and musician Bobby McFerrin (“Don’t Worry, Be Happy”).

Fairview is proud to be one of the few facilities in the state certified

to offer the Music & Memory program. The

positive response to the film has grown as it

continues to earn accolades and recognition

around the world, recently taking home the

prize for Best Documentary at the Milan

International Film Festival.

Stop and Smell the Roses! This fall, Fairview received two very generous gifts that allowed us to make improvements to our beautiful Rose Garden.Thank you to the Rebekah Assembly of CT for a $5,000 donation and the Welcome Rebekah Lodge for a $1,000 donation, these special gifts enabled Fairview to renew and expand our Rose Garden. The area was leveled and a new walking path was installed as well as many beautiful roses, grasses and other aromatic flowers. The new garden area will be a place of respite and reflection for residents and family members alike. Thank you to the Rebekahs for their loving support and leaving a lasting legacy with a gift of the beautiful garden that will be enjoyed for years to come. Be sure to visit the rose garden this Spring when the roses start to bloom once again.

Walk to End Alzheimer’s

F airview participated this year in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s and fundraised throughout the year for the Alzheimer’s Association. Fairview hosted a Pasta Dinner and held a raffle to win

an overnight stay at the Mystic Marriott, collected tips in the Bistro and with staff we hosted an Ice Cream Sundae Social, several pizza days and a “Casual for a Cause” day every Friday. As a team, we had over twenty walkers and individual team members fundraised as well. In total, the Fairview team raised $3,695.23 for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s!
