Introducing Wi-Fi Protected Setup 5
Consumers love Wi-Fi, but they want it
to be easier to set up and protect
Strong security is a requirement on Wi-Fi CERTIFIED devices, butenabling it has up to now been somewhat difficult
2 in 5 consumers still have not activated the security on their Wi-Finetwork*
44% of consumers described activating security on a Wi-Fi networkas moderately to very difficult**
Most (83%) of people think usingsomeone elses Wi-Fi networkwithout their knowledge is stealing, but about half of people admit that
they have done so***

Introducing Wi-Fi Protected Setup:
Easing setup in home and small office networks
Wi-Fi Protected Setup is anoptional certification program
designed to ease set up ofsecurity-enabled Wi-Finetworks in the home andsmall office environment
This new optional certificationprogram provides two easy-to-use methods to configure a network:
Push-Button Configuration
PIN / numeric code
WFA Authorized Test Labs are taking orders and the first productswill enter the market during Q1 2007

Wi-Fi Protected Setup has broad industry
support across the value chain
This program is based upon the firstspecification developed solely by WFAmember companies
Broad support for a consistent,industry-wide solution led to a largeand active task group
Silicon, devices, software, andservice providers all participated
The Wi-Fi Simple Config Specificationdetails Wi-Fi protected setup and ispublicly available at www.wi-fi.org
Later, the program will support Near-Field Communication and USB FlashDrive methods for activation

How Wi-Fi Protected Setup works
When a consumer brings home a newWi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Protected Setup
device and turns it on, the networkdetects its presence automatically
The user is prompted to either enter aPIN or push the button
The network name and encryption
information are securely transferred tothe device
A variety of devices can support Wi-FiProtected Setup, from PCs and routers tocameras and phones
New client devices can easily join anexisting Wi-Fi Protected Setup network

Outlining PIN and Push Button methods
PIN Configuration:
8-digit PIN required for each
device on the network PIN can be fixed or dynamic,
but is never user-generated somore secure
PIN is entered into Registrar via
a graphical user interface
Registrar is an entity on thenetwork that issues and revokescredentials
WPA or WPA2 security isenabled
Push-button Configuration:
User pushes button on AP and
client device(s) Especially useful for devices
without a PC-type of interface
Final result is the same as PINmethod: WPA or WPA2 security
is enabled
Coming later this year: Near FieldCommunication method, in which auser touches a token or card to a
device. NFC support is expected tobe added in 1H 2007

802.11n: Next-generation Wi-Fi,
coming later this year
802.11n will bring an estimated 6x throughput and improved range forWi-Fi networks and next-generation Quality of Service features
WFA plans to introduce a certification program for pre-standard IEEE802.11n products in the first half of 2007 to help ensure interoperabilityfor a baseline set of features
The Wi-Fi Alliance plans to certify productsbased on the final IEEE 802.11n standardwhen it is ratified, supporting what we
expect to be a larger set of features and afully reviewed and interoperablestandards based solution
