he National Association of Real Estate Brokers, Inc. (NAREB) recently held its fact-finding investigation “State of Housing in Black America” forum (SHIBA) in Atlanta Georgia on the prestigeous and historical-predominantly Black campus of Morehouse College inside the Martin Luther King Jr. International Chapel.

Morehouse College President, Dr. Robert M. Franklin welcomed attendees, panelists, and NAREB President Julius L. Cartwright as he set the stage for the most prevalent list of concerns plaguing every Black homeowner living in the United States today by opening the discussion. Reverend Dr. Otis Moss, Jr., Pastor Emeritus of Olivet Institutional Baptist Church in Cleveland, Ohio, and Trustee of Morehouse College delivered a stirring historical perspective

that had forum attendees standing on their feet. His presentation focused on the history of home and land ownership in the Black community, and the sometimes ugly, painful price of that ownership we learned in the early 40’s and why homeownership continues to be so critical to the health, growth and sustainability of all minority communities throughout the United States.

Research by Atlanta Regional Housing reveals that 80% of Georgia’s foreclosure fil-ings are from Metro Atlanta. Metro Atlanta has the 16th highest foreclosure rate in the country based on the findings of RealtyTrac (2010). Compliance Tech, covered current and past mortgage lending trends affecting Blacks and highlighted statistical data that fo-cused on the impacts foreclosures have had on our neighborhoods and communities.

HOUSING MARKETSEEKS WISDOM IN HIGHER POWERS

This high-powered community motivated, socially active and spiritually grounded group of panelist discussed, various solu-

tions to foreclosure, blight and disas-ter response and recovery nationwide throughout Black communities and other communities of color as relates to the crisis and its resulting environmental challenges.

The SHIBA panel included Paul R. Taylor, Jr., Managing Member, SRP Development; Lindsay Jonker, Executive Director, EnviRe-new, Salvation Army; Dr. Lezli Baskerville, President and CEO National Association

'

for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO); and Lawrence Batiste, Chairman of the Board, NAREB, Cicero Wilson, Vice President and Grants Administrator, SRP Development and Errol George, President, George & George Consultants, LLC., Christo-pher Norman, Executive Director, Atlanta/Fulton County Land Bank Authority and Dr. Moss, offered final thoughts and comments to the topic of the devastating housing crisis that plagues the culture, heritage and the hard-fought right to home ownership.

Personally, it made me proud to be a “Realtist” and a proud member of the oldest minority real estate trade associa-tion in the nation. Since 1947, the National Association of Real Estate Brokers and its members (Realtists) continue to fight for fare housing practices in every neighbor-hood across the United States and to pro-

vide an equal playing field for homeowners of every race, creed and color. “There are countless unforseen tragedies that directly and indirectly impact Black communities as it relates to the Black household, its structure and our links to our culture and our way of life.” says NAREB President, Julius L. Cartwright. “That’s why we are anxious to share our research data, and engage the public in meaniningful and productive dialogue that will add color and purpose to mortgage fall-out in communi-ties of color across the nation. Our ultimate goal is to offer solutions that will empower people to make informed decisions that will preserve and protect the legacy of our neighborhoods and community.” Atlanta is the second of five cities that will host the State of Housing in Black America (SHIBA). Other participating cities include: New Orleans, Washington D.C., Cleveland. A final

report of findings will be presented in Houston at the SHIBA forum to be held there in Novem-ber 2012. For more information, schedule

an one man or woman change the mind of someone who doesn’t embrace

change? Can one man or woman change an organization? Can one man or woman change the practices of an entire industry? Well honestly, the answer is NO! One man or woman cannot stand alone against the multitudes of complacency, indifferences, and doubt and hope to succeed alone. Now is not the time for independent thought... but for singular purpose, individual com-mitment and group achievement. Over the span of the last few months NAREB has gone through a metamorphosis of pur-pose. We have embarked on a mission of comprehensive and aggressive marketing

campaigns and strategic PR offensives in order to bring NAREB to the forefront of the real estate industry. We have been touring the country, spreading the word of organi-zational unity, membership and cohesive-ness through the Home Assurance program (HAP), State of Housing in Black America (SHIBA) Issues Forum, and the Vision Tour. We’ve also enhanced our corporate visibility and market share through the use of online social media, Facebook, Twitter, interactive websites, Youtube News Briefs and various print ads. “The key is to trust others to do what they do best and achieve in ways they couldn’t before. In the past, the 12 found-ing members fought for racial equity. Today it’s critical we intensify our outreach and

awareness efforts, restore and rebuild our communities. I’ve been asked if I alone am responsible for NAREB’s new synergy and renewed energy that’s currently sweeping the nation and the answer is NO. The truth is that one man or woman can choose to make a difference. One man or woman can choose to operate as a whole. And we can choose to change the way we do business as an organization. I’m proud to say that we... you and I, Realtists, NAREB is the realization of your hard work and dedication. Today I stand along side all of you and say that we are the cornerstone of housing in Black America! We are Realtist®! We are NAREB®!

he Realtist® Committee Factor is one of the most important components in

the successful evolution of NAREB®. Mo-bilizing the membership through a strong committee structure is the key to the suc-cess of our organization. The Realtist® Fac-tor begins with each of you. Each of you give life and meaning to what “Realtist®” really means. When choosing a committee it’s important to make the best decision that aligns you with your strengths and exper-tise. Find a committee that best fits your own personal gifts. Doing this will give you

the best chance for success. This is a “Call to Action” for every Realtist®. Committing yourself to a particular committee making a personal investment of time, ideas and in some cases financial resources. Expect mentorship, guidance and personal growth. The goal of the Realtist® Committee Factor is to increase positive team participation and interaction amongst the membership by expanding and creating committees and in certain instances sub-committees with a specific and clear focus. Committees such as Membership, Technology, and the REO Task Force have core groups, but will ex-

pand to accommodate members through the subcommittees. We’ve also added new specialized committees to assist in the development of initiatives such as the En-ergy, NAREB® Investment Club, Realtist® Consumer Network, Realtist® 65th Theme, Internet Radio, Rainmaker, Newsletter, Health Initiative, and Sports, Building Fund, Hip-Hop Summit Action Network, Realtist® Affiliates Empowerment, and Realtist® Ur-ban Renewal, Research & Development. We welcome your participation and are looking for new members to place on our team.

his initiative is being spearheaded by Monica Butler from Columbus, Ohio.

The goal of this initiative is to increase dis-ease & health awareness within the Realist® organization by providing relevant informa-tion, health screenings and the promotion of positive mental and physical fitness. The top four silent killers of health among Af-rican-Americans are: (1) Heart Disease, (2) Diabetes, (3) Hypertension and (4) Cancer. In today’s fast-paced lifestyles, we often ne-glect our bodies and minds and do not take time for proper exercise and diet manage-ment. NAREB® is taking steps to add three workouts to our daily routines which will be broken down into three levels: High Impact Cardio; (including Kick Boxing; Zumba and/

or a combination of Cardiovascular and Agil-ity training), and Moderate Strengthening and Flexibility (including Yoga, Pilates and/or a combination of Weights and Bands), and Low Impact and/or Power Walking (thru the NAREB® “Get Moving 2012” Walk-ing Club). In addition, suggested diet and meal plans will be provided to participants who express an interest. Dr. Ian Smith has been suggested to lecture on his “no-diet, diet” and promote his book “Eat: The Effort-less Weight Loss Solution.” The best part of this is that most, if not all of these activities will be led by Realtist® members. So if you have the skills as a trainer, or talent in the areas of diet, holistic health, and weight loss management, contact Monica Butler at [email protected].
