Pepsi v/s Coca-Cola

Coca-Cola got the official sponsorship for the 1996 Cricket World Cup by paying huge

money. Pepsi booked the major players including Sachin Tendulkar as its Brand

Ambassador and launched an Ad-Campaign with a tagline, “Nothing Official About

it”.

During the finals of the match, Pepsi launched hot air balloons all around the stadium

with the Brand “Pepsi” engraved on it. People were confused about ‘who the official

sponsor was?’. But Pepsi won the war and its sales increased drastically. Coca-Cola

even after spending huge money became a loser.

This is one of the most historic successes of Ambush Marketing.

*Sony Ericson was the first company to do Stealth Marketing. They developed a new phone with camera in

it and they wanted to promote it. 40 fake actors were asked to pose as tourists and request the passerby to

click their snaps at 10 major cities in USA.

*Another notable case of stealth marketing by a small business was fashion entrepreneur Daymond John's

first campaign for the FUBU clothing line. John had almost no operating budget and no access to

traditional advertising, so he asked hip hop stars Run DMC and LL Cool J to wear FUBU clothing at

concerts and during their appearances on MTV. This gave FUBU a massive audience without John having

to spend any money buying advertising space. The campaign was successful and FUBU became a major

clothing label.
