    UC San Diego

Charging AheadFrom its inception, the University of California, San Diego has attracted leading scholars with an entrepreneurial spirit and a penchant for risk- taking. The freedom to cross boundaries and to create new disciplines fuels breakthrough research with global impact. Our visionaries are looking for the next discoveries that will benefit people around the world in all walks of life.

Meeting the BeachEach year, during UC San Diegos Welcome Week, students

gather for beach games, surf and kayak lessons, and a massive

beach cleanup. The event, called Meet the Beach, provides

an opportunity for the campus to connect with its unique

community and environment. The cleanup is a part of the

Volunteer50 initiative, which encourages the campus community

to perform 50 hours or more of community service during the

    academic year.

Conserving Coral ReefsIn addition to their natural beauty, coral reefs are ecologically

and economically important ecosystems. By using computers to

control CO2 and water temperature above complex reef systems,

Davey Kline is simulating future ocean conditions to better understand what might happen as the oceans warm and acidify.

His research will help guide future decisions to protect and

    conserve the valuable reefs.

Fighting Malaria on Multiple FrontsMalaria aects anywhere from 250 to 500 million people Malaria aects anywhere from 250 to 500 million people

annually. Despite recent advances, the ailment persists as annually. Despite recent advances, the ailment persists as

one of the worlds deadliest infectious diseases. Elizabeth Elizabeth Winzelers innovative research at the interface of chemistry and s innovative research at the interface of chemistry and genetics employs advanced screening programs to create novel genetics employs advanced screening programs to create novel

candidates for possible treatment. Her work investigates new

classes of drugs that appear to target the disease parasite at all

stages of its development and transition.

Building a Model of AutismAutism spectrum disorders are complex neurodevelopmental

diseases characterized by deficits in verbal communication,

impaired social interaction, and limited and repetitive interests

and behavior. Alysson Muotri and colleagues have used stem cells from patients with Rett syndrome, one of the most

aggressive forms of autism, to create the first human cellular

model of the disorder that could be used for drug screening,

    diagnosis and personalized treatment.

    A Purpose BiggerThan Ourselves

    Gary KellyChairman, President, and CEO

    Southwest Airlines

At Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways, we dont view ourselves as a Company of planes; we are a Com-pany of People. We are commi ed to a common Purpose: to connect you to the important moments in your life through friendly, reliable, and low-cost travel. That Purpose fuels our passion

in serving more than 100 million Customers a year. In fact, you might be surprised to learn that we carry

more passengers in the U.S. than any other airlineone in four domestic travelers ies on Southwest. Thats a sacred responsibility that we dont take lightly. Three words from our Purposefriendly, reliable, low-costserve as guideposts in all that we do each day to take care of our Customers and connect you to those important moments. By maintaining our low costs, we

are an airline our Customers can

a ord to y. Before Southwest took to the skies nearly 43 years ago, only ten percent of Americans had ever own on a plane. Today, that number is well over 85 percent. Our low costs boosted travel, increased demand, made our competitors lower their prices, and democratized the skies. Today, our commitment to low fares is as strong as ever. We dont nickel-and-dime our Customers like the other guys. In addition to our every-day low fares, you can still check two bags for free on Southwest, and we dont charge a fee if you have to change your ight. By reliably delivering on our

promise, we are an airline you can trust. We have one of the best Safety records in the industry; its our top priority at all times. We also boast a solid track record for deliver-ing you to your destination ontime, with your bag, and with a smile. By o ering the friendliest

Customer Service in the industry, we are an airline that our Customershave come to LUV. This year we wereranked No. 1 in Customer Service by the Airline Quality Ratings, and we consistently receive the lowest num-ber of Customer complaints to the Department of Transportation. Other airlines can claim to con-

nect People, but only Southwest cando it with friendly, reliable, and low-cost travel. (The magic is in the and.) We provide a unique service combi-nation, and our People are the secret to delivering on our one-of-a-kind Brand. Because of you, our valued Customer, we have a Purpose bigger than ourselves.

Customer Service in Action A Customer traveling with us recently from San Jose, California, to Chicago arrived at the airport well in advance of his flight but lost track of time. Hoping to grab lunch before boarding, he stopped at a sushi restaurant near his gate and placed his order. Then he realized how close it was to departure time, looked over at his gate, and saw that boardingwas in process for his flight. He left the restaurant without his meal, although he had already paid for it. As he boarded, he shared his dilemma with our Operations Agent, who asked for the meal receipt and instructed the Customer to board. Minutes later, our Employee walked onboard with the Customers meal and delivered it to him. Now thats service!

Brian Ragsdale is a true Texan through and throughsix generations deep, in fact! Brian started his SouthwestAirlines journey 17 years ago as a Customer Service Agent at Houstons William P. Hobby Airport. Today, he is the Senior Program Lead for Station Training and Compliance, a role that entails tracking all training for Southwest Airlines University and ensuring compliance with all requirements and deadlines. In supporting more than 20 stations, Brian is involved

in everything from deicing procedures to New Hire training. His trick for staying on top of everything? Building relationships. I tell the station Employees to call anytimeIve got plenty of cellphone minutes! he says. For Brian, ge ing into the aviation industry was a

no-brainer. Growing up, I had an uncle who ew on hiscompanys corporate plane all around the world, he says. Hed bring me li le things from di erent countries, and thats what really sparked my interest in travel. Brian LUVS that Southwest gives him the Freedom to Fly. He travels extensively (domestically and interna-tionally) to a end concerts and pro sporting events and to pursue charity work. Southwest promotes Ronald McDonald House Charities and local Make-A-Wish chapters, but the Company also encourages Employees to nd our own meaningful causes, Brian says. For me, thats supporting cancer research. Brians favorite Southwest memory is when he

helped lobby Congress in 2005 to repeal the Wright Amendment. It worked just like my high school government teacher said it would, he jokes. I cant wait for it to nally come to fruition in October. Brian is also excited that Southwest will begin to y inter-nationally this year. I hope to see a lot more passport stamps in our Customers futures. When Brian isnt traveling by air or helping a charity on the ground, he can be found out on the water, shing or wakeboarding.Thank you, Brian, for sharing your enthusiasm with

all of us at Southwest! Laura Wilkinson

    Story

What do winning American Idol and ying Southwest Airlines have to do with each other? Well, if you ask Season Five Idol winner Taylor Hicks, quite a bit. If not for a unique set of circumstances and the help of Southwest, mixed with a bit of luck and perfect timing, Taylor might not have been discovered. In August 2005, Taylor traveled to New Orleans to

a end a friends wedding. But Hurricane Katrina moved in quickly, resulting in the cancellation of all ights. Taylor hailed one of the last cabs leaving New Orleans, eventually making his way to Birmingham in a rentalcar. Since the storm had impacted his travel plans, Southwest provided Taylor with a voucher that could be applied to the purchase of a future ight. A couple months later, he decided to y to Las Vegas on a whim. A er landing at midnight, Taylor got a call from his brother, who told him that the American Idol tryouts were being held in Vegas that coming day. He headed over, got in line, and the rest is history. While Southwest played a small role in Taylors

rise to Idol fame, frequent ying has become a big part of his life since he won the competition. From the Editor

One of my favorite writers, Gary Shteyngart, recently showed up in a picture on Facebook holding a sign with the cover image from his latest book, Lile Failure. Emblazoned across the sign are these words: Failure is an Option. If I knew how to embroi-der, Id make a pillow featuring that slogan. Those who do needlepoint

for a livingor bake cheesecake, or paint burlap table runners for sale on Etsy, or forge entirely new career directions for themselves

Dear Reader, are the subject of the cover story on page 70. This special package is about people pursuing a New American Dream. If you read between the lines, it also has to do with failure. As more of us quit our day jobs and become free agents, ultimate success belongs not to the most talented or the hardest working, but to those who recover best from bad luck and their own mistakes. Of course, failure isnt always

an option, which is why a compa-ny like Southwest Airlines has support systems and sterling safety records. But in other elds, failing is a necessity. Bodybuilders li to failure, pumping iron until they cant get in another rep. Judo

    SPIRIT MARCH 2014

novices learn the art of falling. Engineers push devices until they break, to measure the margin of safety. And most of the successful people I have interviewed over the years have proudly described their ops and recoveries. In fact, failing is a skill that

everyone should learn early on. Take writing, for example. Instead of just instructing students to create a great rst dra, we ought to show them how to rewrite a lousy one. And the new handicra entrepreneurs dont need to grow up learning the secrets of success so much as how to bounce back from defeat. So, fellow strivers, go out there,

do your best, and fail! While the meek shall inherit the earth, the resilient will earn it the hard way.

    Your Words

Dear Spirit,Geing comfortable on a recent ight between Austin and Dallas, I picked up the most recent copy of Spirit magazine. As I ipped through the pages, I noticed a photo that looked a lot like the man who was siing beside me. I tapped him on the shoulder and asked, Do you know this man? He gave a friendly smile and remarked, As a maer of fact, I do. Siing beside me was none other than Gary Kelly, Southwests CEO. He explained to me that he always gets around this way. When I complimented his humility and respect to the sta, he told me, There isnt a bad seat on any of our planes. On that day, I had to argue that I had one of the best seats. Meeting him was a real treat, and it gave me great condence in the management of an airline that I choose to y oen. Well done, Southwest!

  • COCKTAIL TOURThe timing of Rien Fertels Tales of a Tippling City, [December 2013] was impeccable! My hus-band and I and one of our adult sons made the trip to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl, and I used the piece as our guide for touring the French Quarter. We began and ended at Kingsh, where we enjoyed the Pimms Cup, mint

julep, Bramble, and Doctors Orders. We made two trips to Bourbon O Bar as well, where we tried the brandy crusta. Cheryl Charming, the proprietor, lives up to her name with her friendly aitude toward her customers. She regaled us with French Quarter and cocktail history and provided her own personal suggestions of places to see and

things to do. At Arnauds French 75 Bar, Chris Hannah and his sta quickly warmed to us when they realized we were on a mis-sion to learn about New Orleans cocktail history. Thanks to Chris, we did not miss the beautiful holi-day decorations at The Roosevelt hotel, where we enjoyed more out-standing cocktails at the Sazerac Bar. We also visited Cane & Table and SoBou. Drinking at bars is about much more than geing a buzz; its about human interaction. Thank you for providing an inter-esting take on touring the French Quarter. With my newfound knowledge I plan to host a cocktail party where Ill try to replicate some of these classic drinks, black bow tie and all!

Well, the Cranberry Pistachio Shortbread cookies [Eat, May 2013] caught my eye over the summer, and I thought they might make a good addition to my Christmas cookies since they have both red and green ingredients. My friends deemed them The Christmas Cookie, and I sent the recipe out with my Christmas cards so that others can enjoy them. Important Information for Patients about PATADAY (olopatadine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution) 0.2%This summary contains risk and safety information for patients about PATADAY Solution. This summary does not include all information about PATADAY Solution and is not meant to take the place of talking to your healthcare provider about your medical condition or treatment. Please see the full Prescribing Information for complete product information available at www.Pataday.com. Read the Prescribing Information that comes with PATADAY Solution before you start using it and each time you get a rell. There may be new information. If you have questions about PATADAY Solution, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.INDICATIONS AND USAGE PATADAY Solution is indicated for the treatment of ocular itching associated with allergic conjunctivitis.DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION The recommended dose is one drop in each affected eye once a day.DOSAGE FORMS AND STRENGTHSOphthalmic solution 0.2%: each ml contains 2.22 mg of olopatadine hydrochloride. CONTRAINDICATIONS None.WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS For topical ocular use only. Not for injection or oral use.Contamination of Tip and Solution As with any eye drop, to prevent contaminating the dropper tip and solution, care should be taken not to touch the eyelids or surrounding areas with the dropper tip of the bottle. Keep bottle tightly closed when not in use. Contact Lens Use Patients should be advised not to wear a contact lens if their eye is red. PATADAY (olopatadine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution) 0.2% should not be used to treat contact lens related irritation. The preservative in PATADAY Solution, benzalkonium chloride, may be absorbed by soft contact lenses. Patients who wear soft contact lenses and whose eyes are not red, should be instructed to wait at least ten minutes after instilling PATADAY (olopatadine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution) 0.2% before they insert their contact lenses.ADVERSE REACTIONS Symptoms similar to cold syndrome and pharyngitis were reported at an incidence of approximately 10%.The following adverse experiences have been reported in 5% or less of patients:Ocular: blurred vision, burning or stinging, conjunctivitis, dry eye, foreign body sensation, hyperemia, hypersensitivity, keratitis, lid edema, pain and ocular pruritus.Non-ocular: asthenia, back pain, u syndrome, headache, increased cough, infection, nausea, rhinitis, sinusitis and taste perversion. Some of these events were similar to the underlying disease being studied.

USE IN SPECIFIC POPULATIONS Pregnancy Teratogenic effects: Pregnancy Category C Olopatadine was found not to be teratogenic in rats and rabbits. However, rats treated at 600 mg/kg/day, or 150,000 times the maximum recommended ocular human dose (MROHD) and rabbits treated at 400 mg/kg/day, or approximately 100,000 times the MROHD, during organogenesis showed a decrease in live fetuses. In addition, rats treated with 600 mg/kg/day of olopatadine during organogenesis showed a decrease in fetal weight. Further, rats treated with 600 mg/kg/day of olopatadine during late gestation through the lactation period showed a decrease in neonatal survival and body weight. There are, however, no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Because animal studies are not always predictive of human responses, this drug should be used in pregnant women only if the potential benet to the mother justies the potential risk to the embryo or fetus.Nursing Mothers Olopatadine has been identied in the milk of nursing rats following oral administration. It is not known whether topical ocular administration could result in sufcient systemic absorption to produce detectable quantities in the human breast milk. Nevertheless, caution should be exercised when PATADAY (olopatadine hydrochloride ophthalmic solution) 0.2% is administered to a nursing mother.Pediatric Use Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients below the age of 2 years have not been established.Geriatric Use No overall differences in safety and effectiveness have been observed between elderly and younger patients.NONCLINICAL TOXICOLOGY Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, Impairment of Fertility Olopatadine administered orally was not carcinogenic in mice and rats in doses up to 500 mg/kg/day and 200 mg/kg/day, respectively. Based on a 40 L drop size and a 50 kg person, these doses were approximately 150,000 and 50,000 times higher than the MROHD. No mutagenic potential was observed when olopatadine was tested in an in vitro bacterial reverse mutation (Ames) test, an in vitro mammalian chromosome aberration assay or an in vivo mouse micronucleus test. Olopatadine administered to male and female rats at oral doses of approximately 100,000 times MROHD level resulted in a slight decrease in the fertility index and reduced implantation rate; no effects on reproductive function were observed at doses of approximately 15,000 times the MROHD level.Rx onlyReference: 1. DRINK IN SAN FRANCISCO

Punchers ChanceA lot of my inspiration for cocktails comes from food. I had a dish some months back at a Burmese restaurant that used coconut and black sesame seeds, and I knew I had to make a cocktail geared toward that combination. So when we held an event this past October called the Mission Margarita Brawl, where 10 bars in the neighborhood had to make their take on a margarita, I thought to myself, What if I got black sesame seeds, ground them up, and added some salt to make the salt rim? This punch-style cocktail works well because, on the front, youve got the smokiness from the mezcal, and on the finish, the driving acidity with the coconut. We won the brawl.

Ties That Bind Psychologist David DeSteno untangles matters of trust, from some common misconceptions to questionable cues.

    Q + A

What are some of the myths surrounding trust?Oftentimes, we assume someone is trustworthy or not based on his or her reputation. If that were such a great predictor then we wouldnt be surprised so often. Science tells us that everyone has his pricewhether he knows it or not. We each have two types of mechanisms: those that favor short-term gain and those that favor long-term gain. If youre thinking short-term, youll take whatever you can get and run. However, long-term gain requires you to be more community-oriented to get what you want in the end. Whether you are trustworthy or not in any given moment is determined by which of these two urges is motivating you.

What traits should you look for when determining if someone is trustworthy? We tend to think about trust in terms of integrity, but theres another component thats equally as important: compe-tence. When youre deciding whom to trust in a certain situation, consider what might be required of that person. For example, I trust my best friend, but I wouldnt want him oper-ating on me because hes not a surgeon. Ask yourself not only

if the person is honest and fair, but also if he can competently do what you need him to do. My friend may have every inten-tion to help me, but without the competence to do so, the end result will still be failure.

Can I trust my boss?People in positions of powersocioeconomically or other-wiseare more likely to be untrustworthy because they can be. Trust involves making yourself vulnerable to others. The more power you have, the less you rely on others and the less vulnerable you are.

Is it possible to base trust on body language?Yes, it is possible, but in the past weve been looking for a single telltale marker, like shifty eyes or a fake smile, neither of which is telling on its own. Recent studies suggest that only when four particular cues are used in sequence do they predict when a person is going to be untrustworthy. Those are crossing ones arms, leaning back (or orienting yourself away from someone), touching your face, and fidget-ing with your hands. When used together, they say, Im probably going to cheat you.

    TOP F I V E

1Follow the18-Minute RuleWhether youre a humble academic researcher or Bono, each TED presenter is given no more than 18 minutes to speak, Gallo says. Research shows that speeches exceeding 20 minutes increase the anxiety levels of those listen-ing, so be mindful of the length of your talk to ensure a positive experience.

2Share Your PassionDig deep to identify what about your topic makes your heart sing. As Dr. Jill Bolte Taylor was preparingher TED talk about

the day she had a stroke, she was fo-cused on the medical takeaways. A friend suggested she speak instead to what her stroke taught her about spirituality. The talk now has more than 10 million views.

3Think VisuallyEmploy visualsto take audience members on a journey that drives your message home. Undersea explorer Robert Ballardstalk featured 57 slides that contained only photos. Because the slides didnt use

words, they comple-mented his story instead of detracting from it. When infor-mation is delivered verbally, we remem-ber about 10 percent of whats said. When you add a picture, retention goes up to 65 percent.

4Tell a Storyor TwoIn public speaking, you want your audi-ence to like you. You can accomplish this by establishing an emotional connection through storytelling.Neuroscientists have discovered that when a story is beingtold, speaker and listener are literally

in sync, meaning the brain lights up in the same region for both parties.

5Practice Being NaturalWhile it sounds counterintuitive to say that the more you practice, the more natural youll look and sound, its not. Practice allows you to internalize your con-tent, making it easier to focus on nuances of communication like tone and body language. It also gives you confidence.

Decompress Test Whats your strategyfor relieving stress?

Playing music is a great stress reliever for me.Im a fiddler, and when I engage in the rhythmic motion of the bow and the harmonic sounds that come from it, I can zone out, distancing my-self from realities that add tension to my life. The ef-fect is enhanced when playing with friends. Time seems to stop dur-ing those euphoric moments.

    Don SummersGRIFFIN, GEORGIA

I deal with stress in different ways depending on the time of day. If I wake up stressed, I do yoga. If its dur-ing the day, I do an emotional check-in and ask myself, How am I feeling in this moment? Whatever comes up, I forgive myself for the judgment and release the sensation with a deep breath.

    John WendtLONGMONT,

I hang upside down on aninversion board for 10 minutes at 180 degrees. Its an amazing stress reliever. If its been aparticularly bad day, I make it 20 minutes.

As a wife and a mother with a full-time career, the best avenue Ive found for relieving stress is hiking. At the beginning of the hike, I identify what has me the most stressed. Through-out my trek, I think about the reason for the problem and the different ways I can relieve the situation. By the time I make it to the top of the mountainwhich for me is Cowles Mountain in San DiegoI have a solution, my head is clear, and I get to enjoy the beautiful scenery all the way down.Christine Hudson

Think twice, though, before freeing mini-Willy. Dumping your fishbowl can cause big problems, says Christine Ngai Ryan, a researcher at the University of Nevada at Reno whos netted 130 whopper cyprinids at Lake Tahoe. Apparently, these prodigious foragers are messy guests: Their waste stimulates excessive algae growth, making the lake murky and unhealthy for native fish. If only someone could change the water.

But the truth can have a pesky way of surfacing. Some people will find out that a spouse has done something wrong when they see their car insurance rates have gone up, says Amy Danise, an Insure.com spokesperson. Other times, sidestepping consequences is a snap: Its really easy to blame some-one else for a ding, Danise acknowledges. Apparently honesty isnt always seen as the best (insurance) policy.

What is the key to a functional workplace? This is one particular area where we can learn a lot from animals. In a pack of dogs, there are essentially three groups:

those in the front, those in the middle, and those in the back. While each plays a signi cant role, no group

is superior. The dogs in the front, typically referred to as alphas, give direction and o er protection; these are your leaders. The dogs in the middle of the pack keep order and ensure that things run smoothly. Those in the back

are the cautious ones, responsible for alerting the others to potential threats. When building a team, adopt a pack mentality. Recognize that its just as important to nd people who are happy being in the back as it is to

identify strong leaders. And maintain a balance of these respective personalities to promote cohesion.

These run the gamut from iconic establishments like Katzs Deli-catessen in New York City and Lou Malnatis Pizzeria in Chicago to mom-and-pop operations like Elles Belles Bakery in Bozeman, Montana. Goldbelys o erings are

While some of our partners do their own shipping, in most cases we handle it for them. The team at Goldbely will coach, consult, and do ship-ping test runs with anyone we think has a delicious product to see if we can make it work for both of us.
