PF: The set parameters of the home as we know it today are slowly dissolving, making room for hybridspaces. Bathrooms are no longer purely functional spaces for cleaningand grooming – they have become“wellbeing” centres. Installing a new bathroom is aninvestment. How do you ensurethat the design of a new product is still relevant in ten years’ time?

PF: We work with trend forecasters toidentify long-term societal trends. Thisensures that our designs are relevanttoday but they will also be relevant inthe future. This, combined with ourconstant search to understand andexplore human behaviour and desires,helps to ensure the longevity of ourdesigns.

DS: Our products are designed to withstand years of stress and exposure.Grohe SilkMove® technology uses thefinest ceramic discs in the industryensuring a lifetime of maintenance-free operation, while our dazzlingGrohe StarLight® finish is soil repellentand resists scratches and tarnishingguaranteeing good-as-new looks foryears to come.

What about the drain?It may seem obvious, but the morewater your shower produces the largerthe drain required. It could be thatyou'll need two drains to cope with the amount of water that needs to becarried away.

Will I have enoughhot water?This is determined by the capacity ofyour hot water tank. Check that yourtank is big enough to handle theamount of hot water you'll need. Thereis no point in having a large number of water outlets if there's nothing butcold water after a couple of minutes.Make sure your water heater output issufficiently matched to your showeringhabits.

How do I controlall the outlets?Custom showers are generally designed with separate volume(on/off) controls for each outlet orbank of outlets. Typically, one for theheadshower, one for the handshowerand one for the body jets.

Before you start planning your customshower there are a few importantthings you should consider to ensureyour new shower will work efficientlyand be a pleasure to use.

How many showerscan I combine?Grohe's extensive range of productscan all be combined in numerousways to make your custom shower. Doyou require one or two handshowers?How many side jets would you like,and where do you want to positionthem? Perhaps you would prefer onelarge overhead shower surrounded bylots of body jets. The combinations are endless. Two restrictions are yourwater pressure and the maximum flowrate of the thermostat – your Groheadvisor will be able to help you add up the flow rates of each individualshower piece and check that the totaldoes not exceed the maximum capacity of the thermostatic valve.

Which thermostatshould I choose?You should always use a Grohe thermostatic valve, for a safe andcomfortable shower. Again, a Groherepre-sentative can advise you on thebest model to suit your requirements.

For decades the architecturalsignificance of Haus Heusgenremained a well-kept secret.Until recently, when its current owner, architect KarlAmendt, revealed the iconicstatus of the building.

Built in the 1930s, HausHeusgen was designed byarchitect Ludwig Mies vander Rohe for the Huesgenfamily of textile industrialists.Following the death of theindustrialist’s son, Amendtpurchased the house anddecided to give it a completeoverhaul, before opening itto the public.

“To me, it was very important to renovate HausHeusgen in the sense ofMies van der Rohe. Wewere able to recondition a lot of the original items;however, I had to replacethe bathroom fittings,”explains Amendt. “The Atriotwo-handle mixer fromGrohe fits in perfectly. Itreflects the essential designelements of Bauhaus architecture, as if it hadbeen designed especially for this ambience.”
