CareSync, a Wesley Chapel-based healthmanagement company, is in the midst of agrowth spurt with new investments of $18million, and a plan to hire 500 new employ-ees over the next 18 months.

About 100 jobs will be in marketing,sales and development. But, most will be forpeople with medical backgrounds, includingregistered nurses, certified nursing assistantsand clinicians. Some positions also might goto people who have the drive and desire tobecome a nurse.

The start-up company launched nearlyfour years ago as a software and serviceprovider for chronic disease management.There currently are nearly 120 employees.

The company’s users include health careproviders, caretakers and individual patients

who want to collect, organize and storemedical data for quick, easy reference.

The idea is to put everyone involved in a

patient’s care on the same page, sharing anentire medical history.

“We are all about creating care plans,”said Travis Bond, the company’s founder andchief executive officer.

The company offers options on how toaccomplish that task.

A free app is available for people whowant a “do-it-yourself” approach.

However, the company also offers arange of fee-based services where re-trieval specialists collect, enter andorganize medical information from multi-ple providers. Physicians, nurses and

birthday on Oct. 30, has been the home ofthousands of school children over the years— and has had six staff members since thebeginning.

They stayed because they felt a sense ofconnection with the school, the staff andthe students.

“It’s a sense of family. I am comfortablehere,” said Kristen Eales, a first-grade teacher,who spent most of her time at the schoolteaching kindergarten.

“It feels like home to me,” added SusanGreen, who is now the school’s bookkeep-er.

“I definitely feel a sense of ownership.We put the desks together here. We saw thewalls. We came in construction. You alwaysjust felt like it was your school,” saidShannon Presson, who teaches fourthgrade.

Mary Jane Kranendonk, the school’sphysical education teacher, marvels at thebeauty of the school’s setting.

“It’s a nature’s paradise out there. We’vehad owls, hawks,” she said.

Cathy Cohen, the school’s custodian, livesin Carpenter’s Run. She enjoys living near

enough she can walk or bicycle to school.“I wouldn’t want to go anywhere else,”

said Karen Anair, who teaches children whoare deaf or hard of hearing.

All of those staff members, exceptGreen, have had their children educated atDenham Oaks Elementary, at 1422 OakGrove Blvd., in Lutz.

“Having my children go to school here, Ialways knew they were going to get phe-nomenal teachers,” Kranendonk said.

The elementary school began classes atits Lutz campus on Oct. 31, 1995.

Denham Oaks began the school year ondouble sessions with Lake MyrtleElementary because of issues between theschool and Mad Hatter Utilities.

The opening day at the new campus wasparticularly memorable for Cohen’s twinsons, who were 8 and were going into thirdgrade.

They’re very busy on Dogpatch Lane.They’re so busy, that they have more

business than they can handle.If this were a regular company, it would

be great news.But at Pasco County Animal Services, it

means dogs are coming in faster thanthey’re being adopted.

That’s not a good situation for the staff,the volunteers or the animals.

“We’re beyond capacity. We have dogs inlittle crates next door,” said shelter supervi-sor Lise Meinke. The facility is designed tohold no more than 100 dogs, but it has 150now and more are coming in every day.

The shelter is desperate to find homesfor its current residents.

When dogs get adopted, Meinke said it’snot always happily ever after.

People bring dogs back, sometimes justdays later, for reasons ranging from a disap-proving landlord to excessive barking orchewing.

While she loves seeing the dogs leave tonew homes, it’s heartbreaking to see thembrought back.

When people adopt a dog, they need torealize that there is an adjustment period,Meinke said.

“The dog from a shelter doesn’t becomea housebroken, trained dog overnight. Ittakes a lot of time and patience, and it’s acommitment. You need to work with thatanimal,” she said.

The county wants to see more peoplework with shelter animals, so they’re reduc-ing some of the costs associated with pet

adoption. Through the month of October,which is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, adopt-ing a large dog (over 25 pounds and morethan six months old) will cost just $15. Thefee includes having them spayed orneutered, vaccines and a microchip.

Meinke hopes the promotion will helpincrease adoptions and help the facilitymaintain its “no-kill” philosophy.

No shelter is truly 100 percent no-kill, be-

cause some animals have medical or severebehavior issues, Meinke said. But, PascoCounty Animal Services strives to maintain a90 percent save percentage or better. Lastyear the shelter’s save rate was 94 percent.

If adoptions pick up, it will help reducesome of the overcrowding. But nobody ex-pects it to go away completely.

St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman hon-ored Dani Greif, a chalk artist from Lutz, andJulie Graden, a chalk artist from Land O’Lakes, on Sept. 27, according to a news re-lease.

The artists were honored at the Tampa BayBusinesses for Culture & the Arts Chalk Walk,

which was part of the St. Petersburg Festival.Greif received the People’s Choice

Award and $261 for her piece showingSalvador Dali lounging on St. Pete Beach.

For the People’s Choice Award, attendeespurchased tickets to vote for their favoriteart or artists.

At age 14. Grief is already an experi-enced chalk artist, chalking at events for

several years, including the GasparillaFestival of the Arts and Suncoast Arts Fest,the release said.

Graden received the Mayor’s Award forher depiction of a classic St. Pete postcard.She has been creating chalk artworks since2003. She is president of the FloridaChalk Artists Association and certified bythe organization as a maestro street painter.

Ten artists following the theme of“Iconic St. Petersburg” transformed the side-walks along South Straub Park in downtownSt. Pete during the TBBCA Chalk Walk atSPF15. TBBCA has hosted Chalk Walks annu-ally for the past seven years, and theinteractive live-art experience supports tal-ented artists while providing a free, familyfriendly art event, according to the release.

James Serrano found a new career direc-tion in an unexpected place – a “paint andsip” art studio.

After more than 20 years as a financialadvisor and stockbroker, he now is planning“paint parties” at his new business, Pinot’sPalette.

On Oct. 23 at 6 p.m., he will open thedoors and cut the ribbon to a new adven-ture as a first-time business owner of his artstudio and bar at The Shoppes in NewTampa, at 1718 Bruce B. Downs Blvd.

And, the sign inside Pinot’s Palette getsright to the point on what an art studio andbar are all about - “Paint. Drink. And have fun.”

Serrano is no artist, but he swirled apaintbrush across canvas at a similar studioowned by a friend. At the time, he was re-thinking his career options.

The combination of artwork and winebrought him a “light bulb” moment. With en-couragement from his wife, attorney CarolSerrano, he researched what is known asthe “paint and sip” industry and foundPinot’s Palette.

A trip to the company’s headquarters inHouston sold him on the franchise. And thesocial aspects of the business seemed a nat-ural fit for him.

“I love people,” Serrano said. “I love tomeet people.”

Pinot’s Palette began as a small, localbusiness in Houston, Texas, in 2009. Soonafter, its founders, Craig Ceccanti, CharlesWillis and Beth Willis, began franchisingtheir concept nationally. They now haveabout 100 locations in more than 30 states.

The idea is that anyone, with a little guid-ance, can discover the “inner” artist waitingto be set free. Dipping into the creativepalette with a glass of wine or a craft beergives it all a party fizz.

Eight local artists will guide two- orthree-hour evening sessions at Pinot’sPalette on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday andSaturday. The first session will be on Oct. 28.

Pinot’s Palette welcomes anyone who

wants to enjoy meeting people or share anight out with friends. There are opportuni-ties for “girls’ night outs,” bacheloretteparties and date nights. The studio also canhost corporate team-building events, an-

niversary parties or other special events atappointed times.

Pinot’s Palette provides canvas, easel,brushes, paint and an apron. And, Serranosaid, everyone takes away a “masterpiece”drawn from an example set on an easel andalso visible on a monitor. Artists take peoplestep-by-step through the process.

Guests are welcome to bring their ownappetizers, and Pinot’s will provide plates,silverware and napkins. Beer, wine and sodawill be available for purchase.

Evening sessions are adult-oriented, andno children under age 12 will be permitted.But, there will be Little Brushes and FamilyDay classes.

It will be a family-oriented business, saidSerrano.

He and his wife have three sons and apassion for soccer.

In the future, Serrano said he plans tohave “drop and shop” opportunities, whereparents can sign up their children for artclasses and then explore The Shoppes atNew Tampa or cross the street to TheShoppes at Wiregrass for a couple hours ofshopping. Also, Paint It Forward events willbe hosted to benefit local charities.

“I want to give back to the community,”said Serrano.

The Serrano family currently lives in themaster-planned community of Westchase inTampa. But, they will shortly be looking torelocate to the Wesley Chapel area.

Serrano knew he wanted Wesley Chapelfor his business. Pinot’s Palette is centrallylocated at one of Pasco County’s busiestcommercial intersections at State Road 56and Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. Morerooftops also are on the way.

Pasco-Hernando State College’s PorterCampus at Wiregrass Ranch has hit anothermilestone.

The campus hit the 3,000 mark for en-rollment for the coming term. Stan Giannet,provost at Porter Campus, announced themilestone during a town hall session spon-sored by the college and the Greater WesleyChamber of Commerce on Oct. 14.

The campus opened two years ago, with1,800, exceeding its expectations at thattime, Giannet said, in an interview after thetown hall session.

From the beginning, the campus has beenentrepreneurial with its scheduling, he said.

“We opened very aggressively, with anopportunity for students to take classesfrom 8 o’clock in the morning until 9:40 atnight, Monday through Thursday, and from 8

o’clock until 4:30 on Friday, with a generousopportunity for online sections and hybridsections,” Giannet said.

“We continued to build on that sched-ule, with community needs, student needs,student feedback and faculty feedback, ofcourse, in our schedule building – and whatour students are telling us they need,” hesaid.

The college keeps a close eye on project-ed work force needs, and offers coursesdesigned to help students be prepared forthose opportunities, Giannet said.

The college has added a program thathelps licensed paramedics make the transi-tion to becoming nurses.

It also is planning to add the CISCOAcademy certification courses, a prestigiousdesignation in the Information Technologyfield.

That program exists at PHSC’s WestCampus, but is being brought to the Porter

Campus as well, Giannet said.Wiregrass Ranch High School,which is right behind the PorterCampus, has an IT academy.

“You know, with the prolifera-tion of new businesses coming tothe Wesley Chapel area, that net-working, IT, will be very fruitful forpotential graduates,” Giannet said.

Giannet said the college is seek-ing to prepare students to takeadvantage of the new opportunitiesthat are coming to Wesley Chapel.

“We’re excited about all thesethings that are happening – the ex-pansion of Florida Hospital WesleyChapel, (the opening of) TampaPremium Outlets, more and moremedical establishments coming tothe area, the hotels and hospitality, the hock-ey rink, the schools, the new subdivisionsand the development,” Giannet said.

“Those will just give opportunities forour students to be on the front line of em-ployment opportunity.”

There are two kinds of adult students who findtheir way to Saint Leo University — those com-pleting their undergraduate studies and thosereturning to higher education to earn a master’s ordoctorate degree.

For residents of Pasco and surrounding coun-ties, Saint Leo’s adult learner programs are con-venient, cost-effective and highly personal. Mostlocal students take a combination of traditionalclasses held on campus evenings and weekends,along with flexible online classes.

“Saint Leo is ideal for adult students who liveclose-by in Wesley Chapel, Land O’ Lakes andLutz. Because we’re close to home, our studentsbenefit from the on-campus experience of learn-ing with other students and getting to know theirprofessors firsthand,” said Laura “Beth” Lastra,Director of the university’s Adult EducationCenter.

To help people assess if Saint Leo’s adult learn-er program is right for them, the University hastwo upcoming information sessions that are free toattend. Sessions are Tuesday, Oct. 27 from 6 to 7p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 14 from 10 to 11 a.m.Both will be on its campus located at the DonaldR. Tapia School of Business, in northeast Pasco,located on State Road 52, three miles east of I-75.

Leading the sessions will be academic advisorsfrom both the Adult Education Center andGraduate Admissions to discuss programs and theadmission process. After an overview of theUniversity, students will break into groups forundergraduate or graduate students.

“Our sessions help people learn how they canearn their degree with the flexibility they need tofit their busy home and work schedules,” saidLastra. “We share important details about ourdegree programs, financial aid, class schedules andthe enrollment process.”

“We encourage potential students to bringtheir transcripts to the information session, so wecan help them determine where they’re at aca-demically, and what they need to do next to earntheir degree,” said Lastra.

In addition to its main campus in Saint Leo,the university also offers adult undergraduateclasses at the New Port Richey and Porter campusof Pasco Hernando State College, as well as thePHSC locations in Hernando County.

Adult students can choose from 13 undergrad-uate majors, with the four most popular programsoffered in business, criminal justice, social workand education.

The average age of adult education students is37-45, says Lastra. And while most transfer inwith some college credit, more than a quarter ofstudents have not previously attended college.

“Adult students enroll for many reasons,” saidLastra. “Many are coming back to school becauseof a new job, a promotion or after they’ve earnedtheir associate degree from a community or statecollege.

“We also have many older students who areback to fulfill a personal goal of completing theircollege degree – and some who are here to set anexample for their children, who may even be com-peting with their children who are also collegestudents.”

Many of Saint Leo’s adult students enroll fulltime to qualify for a Florida Resident AccessGrant (FRAG). This program provdes residents ofthe state of Florida an annual grant of $3,000, ifthey’re enrolled full time at an accredited, privateuniversity in the state, such as Saint LeoUniversity.

“With the offset of the FRAG grant, tuitionfor our full-time adult students is less than $3,168a year — which is comparable to the tuition at astate university,” said Lastra.

In the graduate program, students earn master’sdegrees in Business Administration andCybersecurity.They also offer a doctorate in busi-ness administration. Graduate classes are taught atthe Saint Leo campus and at its Channelside loca-tion in downtown Tampa.

Most of the campus graduate programs sched-ule classes every other weekend, explains JoshuaStagner, who is Director of Graduate Admissions.Classes are taught in four-hour blocks, with moststudents taking two classes each semester.

“We find having classes every other week givesour adult students the most flexibility to allow fora life balance of school, family and work,” saidStagner.

“We understand the importance of family andwork obligations, and know these needs must bemet for a student to be successful in his graduateprogram,” said Stagner.

Twelve classes are required for most master’sdegree programs. Saint Leo students can completetheir master’s in two years by taking two classeseach term, Stagner said.

Saint Leo’s MBA program is its oldest andbest-known graduate program. It was launched in1994 and is viewed as one of the university’s flag-ship programs.

“We offer several concentrations within theMBA program, including Accounting, HealthCare Management, Marketing, Sport Businessand Project Management,” he said.

The university’s newest master’s program —Cybersecurity — is also one of its most successfulwith an astounding number, considering the pro-gram is only in its second year,” Students willlearn about Cybersecurity in our state of the artlab at University Campus.

Another recent success in the graduate depart-ment was Saint Leo’s first doctorate degree —Doctor of Business Administration.

About 1,500 local students will have achance to be inspired by two nationally ac-claimed Hispanic scientists, in an eventsponsored by the Museum of Science &Industry.

The event, “Meet the National HispanicScientists Day” will be on Oct. 23 at MOSI.

Students will have a chance to be men-tored by Dr. Modesta Alex Madique,president emeritus of Florida InternationalUniversity in Miami, and Dr. Miguel Morales-Silva, recipient of the 2014 Presidential EarlyCareer Award for Science and Engineering.

Morales-Silva is a computational materi-als physicist, according to a news releasefrom MOSI.

“Meet the Hispanic Scientists Day” willgive students from predominately Hispanicand migrant populations from elementary,middle, and high schools a chance to hearmotivational presentations from Madiqueand Morales-Silva.

The students also will have a chance toask the scientists questions and, they will beable to explore MOSI’s exhibit galleries andwatch a film in the Florida Hospital IMAX®DOME Theatre.

Since 2001, MOSI has facilitated the men-toring of more than 21,000 students bynationally recognized scientists and engi-

neers through the National HispanicScientist of the Year fundraiser, the releasestates.

MOSI’s National Hispanic Scientist of theYear events grew out of the vision by localbusinesswoman Maruchi Azorin back in2000. She was concerned by the alarminglyhigh dropout rate for Hispanic students.

At the time, U.S. Department ofEducation research showed that one-thirdof Hispanic students dropped out of highschool — which was a rate three timeshigher than any other ethnic group in thenation.

Funds raised from the Oct. 24 gala willfund the YES! Team (Youth Enriched byS.T.E.A.M. – Science, Technology,Engineering, Art and Math), MOSI’s careerand educational enrichment program de-signed to help at-risk teens develop andprogress in a supportive peer-group envi-ronment.

Nearly 90 percent of YES! Team studentsgo on to post-secondary learning, and thenumbers are steadily rising, the MOSI re-lease says.

Many insects live in our gardens. But didyou know that most insects are harmless?

In fact, nearly 99 percent of all insectsare either harmless or helpful, and just 1 percent are considered pests.

Sometimes we easily recognize benefi-cial bugs.

Common insects that come to mind in-clude honey bees, butterflies and ladybeetles. Other examples of beneficial bugsare predatory wasps, earwigs and big-eyedbugs.

It is easy to encourage beneficial bugs toyour garden.

Start by adding plant diversity. Chooseflowers of different colors and shapes, sothey attract large and small pollinators.

One highly successful pollinator plant isscorpion’s tail. This plant has tiny whiteflowers that are attractive to wasps andflies.

Another great choice is partridge pea.The partridge pea has light green leaves andbright yellow flowers. Partridge pea bloomsthroughout the year. Not only does it serveas a host plant for yellow sulphur butter-flies, it also serves as a nectar plant forbutterflies, bees and pollinators. Plantingpartridge pea in your garden will ensure vis-its by our native pollinators.

When encouraging beneficial bugs toyour garden, properly identify “pests.” Whenyou see an insect or a bug, take the time toidentify it before taking action.

My favorite bug is the mealybug destroy-er. Most people find this bug in its larvalform. As larva, it resembles a giant, whitemealybug with a bad hair day. But, this bugseeks out and eats pest insects such asscales and mealybugs. At first glance, a reac-tion may be to squish or spray it. However,when left alone, the mealybug destroyermoves quickly and eats its prey. Eventually, itturns into a black lady beetle.

The mealybug destroyer is a type of ladybeetle, and inadvertently killing it signifi-cantly decreases the ability of a key insectto assist you with your garden’s pest con-trol.

Some beneficial bugs have been intro-duced as biological control agents. Theseinsects typically link with a key pest, plantor problem.

For example, the air potato vine is an in-vasive exotic plant that grows rapidly, hasfew known natural predators and propa-

gates easily by tubers. Air potato vine hadfew predators, until now. The air potato leafbeetle was released a few years ago, primari-ly in natural areas such as state parks. Thisreddish orange beetle has successfully livedin the wild, reproduced and is voraciouslyeating the air potato vine leaves. When thisbeneficial bug eats the air potato vine leaf, iteffectively reduces the leaves’ ability to makefood through photosynthesis. Over time, thisbeetle will help reduce the amount of landcovered by the invasive vine.

There are other great biological controls,such as the larra wasp.

Most people do not realize that waspsand flies can be beneficial. In particular, thelarra wasp is a predator of mole crickets.

Mole crickets are insects that love bahia-grass.

Mole crickets are large, active at night,and they form burrows in soil — called gal-leries —that damages grass roots.

The larra wasp loves mole crickets. Itfinds a mole cricket, drags it up to the soilsurface, and lays an egg on the soft under-side of the mole cricket. When the molecricket travels back, down into its tunnel,the larra wasp egg eventually hatches andthe larra wasp larva consumes and kills themole cricket.

The larra wasp is a great beneficial bug.You can attract it by planting larraflowerSpermacoce verticillata. The tiny clusters ofwhite flowers are very attractive to larrawasps and other pollinators.

Lastly, be careful with pesticide use. Usethe least toxic or soft pesticides, such as in-secticidal soap and horticultural oil,whenever possible. Rotate vegetables tokeep vegetable garden pests guessing.Choose pest-resistant varieties and followthe first principle of Florida FriendlyLandscapingTM: right plant, right place. Byselecting the right plant and planting it inthe right location, you may be able to re-duce pest and disease problems.

So, don’t forget: Most insects are harm-less or are actually helpful, and just 1percent of insects are pests.

Also, recognize that proper identificationis important, and that in cases like themealybug destroyer, larva can look very dif-ferent from the adult form of that sameinsect.

Previously, we published a list of up-and-coming Halloween and fall festival eventsdesigned to provide plenty of treats (and afew scares) in October.

Those events were fun, but there are oth-ers that also deserve attention. So preparefor more games, rides, costumes and maybea couple of frights over the next couple ofweeks.

TRINITY FEST Generations Christian Church, 1540 Little

Road in Trinity, will host its “Trinity Fest” Oct.29 through Nov. 1. The event will include avariety of activities across four days.

On Thursday, the midway carnival will beopen from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. Rides are $1each.

On Friday, from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m.,there will be a food truck rally, a disc jockey,line dancing, a mechanical bull, a rock-climbing wall and free hay rides. There alsowill be pumpkin decorating and cornholetournaments. The rides will be open with a$20 wristband allowing unlimited access.

On Saturday, there will be a Generationson the Go 5K and fun run from 8 a.m. until10 a.m., and a business and craft expo from10 a.m. until 2 p.m. From 11 a.m. until 3p.m., there will be dancers, music, a pettingzoo and a dominoes tournament. Trunk-or-treating will take place from 7 p.m. until8:30 p.m., and midway rides with $20 unlim-ited access will be available from noon until5 p.m., and again from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m.

On Sunday, an unlimited wristband willcost $15, and the carnival will be open from1 p.m. until 5 p.m.

MACABRE MALL ON 41The Haunted House on 41, an annual tra-

dition at Land O’ Lakes Community Park,5401 Land O’ Lakes Blvd, is back with ashopping mall theme.

Visitors will walk through the room tovisit several creepy “shops” full of monsters,blood and assorted Halloween-themed gore.It only takes a couple of minutes to walkthrough it, but local students put a lot oftime into its construction. In the end, theycreate a creepy attraction that brings innearly 1,000 visitors each year. And, at a sug-gested donation of just $1, it’s an affordablefright.

The mall has a sneak preview eveningOct. 22 from 7:30 p.m. until 9 p.m., and isopen Oct. 23 and Oc. 24 from 7:30 p.m.until around 10 p.m.

SPOOKY TAILS MEANS TREATSFOR K-9 UNIT

The ninth annual “Spooky Tails”Halloween party and pet costume contestwill be on Oct. 24 at the Land O’ LakesCommunity Center, 5401 Land O’ LakesBlvd. The annual event benefits the PascoSheriff’s Office K-9 Unit.

Previous fundraisers have assisted in thepurchase of a bite suit to help train thedogs, and contributed to the K-9 dog retire-ment fund. The goal for this year’s event isto contribute to the retirement fund andmake other purchases the unit needs duringthe year.

For Gail Cooper, owner of ParwickKennels and the founder of Spooky Tails,taking care of canines that serve the com-munity is the right thing to do.

“These dogs are these men’s partners.They have each other’s backs, if you will,”she said. “They’re part of the family.”

Ben Pumo, owner of Benedetto’sRistorante Italiano and a supporter ofSpooky Tails since its inception, agrees.

“They’re our officers without a voice,”Pumo said. “I think it’s important that thedogs get taken care of after their retire-ment.”

Pumo expects 40 to 50 dogs in costumesat the event.

Spooky Tails runs from noon until 4 p.m.The pet costume contests will be at 2:30p.m. There will be more than a dozen ven-dors at the event, as well as games, music,food, and a special demonstration from theK-9 unit.

A HILLBILLY HALLOWEENHillbilly Farms, 10325 US Highway 98 in

Dade City, will host its fourth annual“Harvest Festival” on Oct. 24. More than 400people attended last year, and they’re ex-pecting another good turnout.

Children’s activities include bouncehouses, mini-train rides and games. Therewill also be horse riding, face painting and apumpkin patch.

The Harvest Festival includes an annualpumpkin-painting event, and guests can ei-ther purchase a pumpkin on site or bringtheir own.

The event itself is free and parking isfree, but individual activities may incur aseparate charge. For $10, parents can pur-chase a wristband that allows their childrento participate in various activities. Food anddrinks will also be available for purchase.

“You can invite others to share yourdata,” Bond said. “That’s helpful, because typ-ically a caretaker feels intimidated becauseof lack of data. They lack training and confi-dence.”

About one-third of CareSync’s users arechildren caring for elderly parents, Bondsaid.

The program also aids physicians in coor-dinating care, especially when multipleproviders are involved.

CareSync also aids in billing proceduresand meeting requirements for Medicare’schronic disease management goals.

Bond’s motivation in creating his compa-ny, in part, came from a friend’s struggle tomanage the care of her daughter who hasan autoimmune disease.

The friend is a nurse, but even she wasoverwhelmed trying to cope with 12 doc-

tors and six emergency medical records(EMR) in three states.

“If she can’t do it, no one can,” Bond said.“It bogs down the velocity of care.”

And, he said it creates a “dark space be-tween doctors and appointments. How is itwe can help individuals become more in-formed when not at a point of care?”

While CareSync’s headquarters are inWesley Chapel, the company operates anursing center in Wauchula in HardeeCounty where medical advice and planningis available on a 24-hour basis. Bond hopesto open a nursing center in Wesley Chapel,too.

The $18 million in funding is from newinvestors Merck Global Health Fund,Greycroft Partners and Harbert VenturePartners, and also current investors TullisHealth Investors, Clearwell Group, CDHSolutions and Bond.

The funding reflects the growth in thechronic disease management industry andrecognition by physicians that case manage-ment will be here for years to come, Bondsaid.

“These are lasting, long-term careers. It’sreally a big deal,” he said.

“It was their birthday, Halloween,” shesaid.

The area around the school has changedenormously, the six women said.

State Road 54 was a two-lane road.Oak Grove Boulevard didn’t exist.And, there were no large commercial

ventures anywhere nearby.But, there were cow pastures and plenty

of critters.“The first year, the cows escaped, and

they went across our whole campus. Cowpoop everywhere!” Kranendonk said.

Snakes slithered into classrooms, andthere was even a 5-foot alligator that gotinto a classroom.

“Not only did we stir up the wildlife withthe school being built, but homes startedbeing built,” Eales said.

Many other changes have occurred, aswell.

In those early years, the majority of par-ents would pack their child’s lunch, Cohenrecalled.

And Rosie Capehart, the lunchroom man-ager, was known for her tasty meals and forher bread, which not only tasted delicious,but also filled the campus with the aroma offreshly baked bread.

“I have great memories of Rosie’s lunch-es,” Kranendonk said.

Over the years, scores of happy memo-ries have been made, the women said.

There have been field trips to Sea Worldand to the Ford/Edison Estates, and aRenaissance festival at the school.

There are also school traditions, includ-ing the annual Fall Festival and theStorybook Parade.

And, there have been changes, too.The age of accountability has meant

more structure and testing.Technology has made impacts, too.Now, the school can make automatic

calls to parents, and can use Facebook,Twitter and its website to communicatewhat’s happening.

It was a lot different, when Green wasworking as a secretary in the school office.

“When there were notes going home,you’d have to make a 1,000 copies for thesekids to take home,” she said.

Of course, many students have come andgone, and staff members have changedthrough the years, too.

When the school opened, Ruth (Biggs)Reilly was the principal.

And, she’s expected to attend theschool’s celebration.

She’ll be among hundreds of students,staff members and invited guests for the fes-tivities, which call for a pep rally, a birthdaycake, a slide show and most likely, a rendi-tion of “Happy Birthday.”

It promises to be a big day.

“When are we not at capacity?” askedvolunteer Max Sobel, as he cared for an ani-mal in the small dog room. Max and hiswife, Teri, have been volunteering at the fa-cility for six years.

The Sobels help take care of the dogswhile they’re waiting for a permanenthome. While it’s sad to see them lined up incages with nowhere to go, Teri said sheknows that many of them are in a much bet-ter place than the negligent or abusivesituation where they were before.

So, when a dog finds a new home, it’s atrue cause for celebration, Teri said.

“That’s a really good feeling. That makesit all worthwhile,” Teri said. “We come tomake life for the dogs as good as it can bewhile they’re here, and then the main goal isto get them a forever home.”

That forever home takes time, Meinkesaid.

Smaller, younger dogs are in greater de-mand, even though older and bigger dogscan be a great fit for many adoptive families.

Since things are so crowded, it’s not sur-prising that Meinke, who has dogs, cats,goats and a donkey herself, sometimes takesher work home with her.

She has taken home dogs that are scaredor need a period of acclimation and atten-tion. She’s also taken home kittens that need

to be bottle-fed.The shelter’s cat facilities are not over-

crowded.While Meinke admits it can be some-

what depressing to wait for the facility’sanimals to find a loving home, she knowsPasco County Animal Services is doingeverything it can to save their lives andmake them better.

“It’s very rewarding, too, because I feellike I’m making a difference, and the team ismaking a difference,” Meinke said.

Since taking over the Wharton HighSchool volleyball program in 2009, coachEric Barber has suffered just one losing sea-son. It was the year he took over the squad.

The Wildcats have been winners eversince, with varying levels of playoff success.

Still, even Barber admits there’s some-thing special about this particular group.

“It’s just a team that has really been ableto solidify over the last couple of seasonsthey’ve been together,” Barber said. “It’s oneof those things where it all kind of comestogether at the right point, and you playwell.”

They have consistently played well,opening the year with nine straight winsand winning 17 of their first 18 matches.They closed their season with a 3-0 victoryover Armwood and enter the 7A-8 tourna-ment with a 20-3 record, a perfect 7-0district record and plenty of momentum.

The team has a rare combination of tal-ent and experience, Barber said.

He has great players who have come upthrough the system, and who now have theexperience to go along with their abilities.

The team has also overcome setbacks.Tyler Sroufe, their starting setter and a

college-bound athlete, suffered a season-end-ing injury two weeks into the season.Wharton has absorbed that loss and contin-ued winning, giving the team confidence

that it can achieve great things despite miss-ing such a talented player.

Players have stepped up on defense andblocking, which had already been a hall-mark of Wharton volleyball since Barberarrived. This year, they have the top twoblockers in the district in Lindsey Schaibleand Allie Schneider.

Teamwork is another quality theWildcats possess.

According to Barber, teamwork is themost important characteristic a team canhave on a volleyball court.

“I don’t know of another sport that re-quires so much teamwork and so muchfocus as one unit as the game of volleyball.When it works like it’s supposed to, it’swonderful to watch. It’s an amazing game tosee,” Barber said.

Senior Chanelle Hargreaves likes whatshe sees from her team this year.

“I think this year, a lot of us are more ma-ture. We all know what needs to be done tobe successful,” she said.

Part of that success comes from club vol-leyball, where most varsity players spendtheir time in the offseason. That meansthey’re thinking about the game nearly year-round and staying focused on improvingtheir skills.

And, for those who play together at theclub level, it creates even more synergy be-tween the players that helps when they’reback playing for their school.

Hargreaves has played for the varsity

team all four years of high school, and saidthat she’s matured along with the team.

“Freshman year, I was just very jittery andfreaking out when stuff went wrong,” she re-called. “Now I think I’m more relaxed.”

As a team leader, Hargreaves is the onemotivating her fellow players, remindingthem they can rally from a bad point orgame.

Not that Wharton has had too many badpoints or games this season. But, Hargreavesdoesn’t simply want a good record dominat-ing easy opponents. The challengingmatches are the best ones for the team, shesaid, because it keeps their communicationskills strong. Against easier teams they mightget away with winning based on sheer tal-ent. But, if they’re going to do well againstelevated competition in the postseason,

they’ll have to be on top of their game. If they can do that, Hargreaves thinks the

team has bright prospects in the playoffs.“We can win state, I think,” she said. “We

have the talent on this team to go really far.We just need to stay working together as ateam.”

Barber knows there are a lot of gamesbetween the regular season and that kind ofsuccess. No matter how far they get in theplayoffs (Wharton reached the regionalquarterfinals last year before losing to even-tual state champion Manatee), he hasconfidence in his players, in the program,and in Wharton volleyball’s continuing tradi-tion of success.

“We’re very grateful, and we feel veryblessed with how we’ve grown as a programover the last six or seven years,” he said.

There was a man who was eatingfire, musicians keeping the crowdsentertained, and children riding in atrain fashioned from barrels.

Shoppers could peruse boothsfeaturing everything from home-made soaps to honey, to paintingsand horseshoe décor.

And, visitors could learn a thingor two, too, or grab a bite to eat.

There were pony rides, bouncehouses, wooden gopher tortoiseraces, face painting and plenty ofother options for children to enjoy.

Riego de Dios, who performedThe National Anthem before therace began, said she’s glad her clubdecided to take over the event lastyear to keep it alive.

Next year, the event will be atwo-day affair, as the festival marksits 50th anniversary.

“It’s great that it didn’t have todie,” Thies agreed.

He said he was there to helpbecause that’s what Rotary Clubsdo, they help each other.

Terrie Grissom also was happyto help, as was her sister, DonnaFichter, who was helping in the T-shirt tent.

Fichter marveled at the weath-er: “Gorgeous day! Could it not bebetter?”
