In a world where new cyber threats con-stantly emerge, a new agreement betweenSaint Leo University and (ISC)2 will expandopportunities at the university in the arenaof cybersecurity.

(ISC)2 is a nonprofit organization that pri-marily focuses on education andcertification in the field of cybersecurity.

Saint Leo University has recently joined(ISC)2 in a Global Academic Partnership.

USF and Polk State College are other in-stitutions in the region that also joined(ISC)2’s Global Academic Partnership.

“This is one of the largest and most re-spected organizations that operates in thisfield,” said Dr. Vyas Krishnan, assistant profes-sor of computer science at Saint LeoUniversity.

“It’s sort of a gold standard,” he added, noting the organization boasts a member-ship of more than 110,000 cybersecurityprofessionals worldwide.

“They also offer some of the most highlyrespected certifications in the field of cyber-security,” Krishnan said.

The university benefits because the part-nership provides Saint Leo students accessto educational modules and certification op-portunities that (ISC)2 provides forprofessionals, he said.

“Since we are a Global Academic Partner, our faculty, ourselves would be providingworkshops, seminars and training for someof those certifications,” Krishnan said.

That will enable Saint Leo students towork with the same faculty that they’vebeen taking classes from at the university,he noted.

Additionally, the partnership will givestudents a chance to interact with workingprofessionals, Krishnan said.

The cybersecurity field is constantlyevolving, and it’s a field that offers significant

employment opportunities, Krishnan said. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics proj-

ects a 37 percent increase in demand forcybersecurity specialists in the next 10years, he added.

Jobs in this field pay well. Experts canearn from $75,000 to $125,000, with five to10 years of experience, and the proper cer-tifications, Krishnan said.

Many of the certifications required in jobpostings are certifications provided by(ISC)2, he noted.

Through the agreement, (ISC)2 will pro-vide thousands of students andprofessionals across the states of Florida,Virginia and Georgia, and online studentsfrom across the country with the opportu-nity to gain knowledge, skills andcertifications.

(ISC)2 also sees a benefit by partneringwith Saint Leo, because working profes-sionals must earn continuing professionaleducation credits to keep their certifica-

tions current.Another benefit is that through interac-

tions between the university, the workingprofessionals and the (ISC)2 consortium, knowledge can be shared in the evolvingfield, Krishnan said.

The interactions will provide a broadview, and raise awareness about emergingthreats and new ways to mitigate them.

Cyber criminals are constantly comingup with new ways to steal data or stymiesystems.

“The frequency is going up. Cyber crimi-nals are becoming more sophisticated,”Krishnan said.

At the same time, companies and organi-zations recognize that steps must be takento ensure that data is protected.

“Upper management has fully realizedthe gravity of the situation, how important itis to protect the assets because there couldbe legal implications and there could be fi-nancial implications, reputation hits, things

of that nature,” Krishnan said. “The ramifica-tions are huge.”

The cybersecurity profession is highlytechnical, Krishnan said. But he added: “It’salso challenging and exciting.

“It’s a lot of cat-and-mouse kind ofgames.

“You can see the tracks that they leavebehind. You can see how they’re impactingyour network, but you cannot see the per-son. A lot of times, you may not even knowwhere they’re located.”

Saint Leo University offers a master ofscience in CyberSecurity and a master’s inBusiness Administration, with anInformation Security ManagementSpecialization.

It also offers a bachelor program inComputer Science and the one in ComputerInformation Systems. Next August, it expectsto add a bachelor’s degree in CyberSecurity.

All of these degree programs are avail-able in a face-to-face setting or online.

Cybersecurity opportunities expand at Saint Leo

B.C. MANION/STAFF PHOTOStudents are busy during a cybersecurity class at Saint Leo University. The field of cybersecurity requires technical skills, but is both finan-cially and professionally rewarding, said Dr. Vyas Krishnan, of Saint Leo University.

Music festivals can be fun. You getto experience an entire day (orweekend) of diverse musical

styles and groups, enjoy the atmosphere anddo something different outside. It’s a funway to spend a weekend.

It’s not really a cheap way, though.Festivals can be expensive. It’s not unusualto spend $20 or $30 to get in. And that’s justone day. A festival that runs two or threedays can cost $50 to $80.

And that’s just for one person. Oh, youweren’t planning on going by yourself?Better empty your wallet.

Or, find a better festival. Let me suggestthe Hernando Music Fest, which will takeplace this weekend at Tom Varn Park, 306Darby Lane in Brooksville. It’s the first yearfor the festival, and the schedule includes alot of music, some extra activities for chil-dren, and a price point that will make yourheart sing.

But, first things first.A music festival, naturally, will feature

music. And the Hernando Music Fest willhave nearly 15 acts spread out over twodays, representing talent from area counties.

It’s not just one music style, either.Whether you like jazz, rhythm and blues, country, or swing, there’s someone for youscheduled to perform. And, even if you pre-fer one style to another, an event like this ismade for experiencing different genres andappreciating an array of musical talents. Youmight surprise yourself and find you likesomething different, after all.

So, there are plenty of performances toenjoy, but the music theme isn’t limited tothe stage. A music activities tent will featurean instrument “petting zoo” for children, meaning they’ll get some hands-on experi-

ence with instruments they might havenever even seen before, including the key-board, harmonica and saxophone. Therealso will be art projects, giving them some-thing to take home.

The focus on educating and inspiringyouth isn’t surprising, since the event is pre-sented by the Hernando County ArtsCouncil, the Hernando Jazz Society, and StirUp The Gift Talent Organization.

There also will be a food court at the fes-tival, with wine and beer available topurchase. Coolers aren’t allowed, so that’swhere you’ll go for refreshments through-out the day.

So, it seems like a full day of entertain-

ment. Two days, actually. And that’s exactlywhat the Hernando County Fine ArtsCouncil had in mind.

“Our whole goal is to give back to thecommunity what they give to us, and in themeantime to spread the arts,” explained JanKnowles, project coordinator for the council. If this festival goes well — like their annualArt in the Park that has been a success formany years and draws thousands — they’dlike to make it an annual event, she said.

There is one thing missing, though: A fa-mous name.

That’s what usually anchors a music festi-val, and that’s what accounts for a festival’shigh cost.

Neither exists at the Hernando MusicFest, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be alot of great sounds coming from the stage. They’re locally based acts with a lot of talentand some pretty impressive resumes aswell.

One of those artists, Jenny Rimmer, per-formed at last year’s Pasco Music festival, where she served as an opener for theMarshall Tucker Band. If you like countrymusic, from Patsy Cline to CarrieUnderwood, you’ll recognize a lot ofRimmer’s songs. She represents several erasin country music, and will perform bothdays at the festival.

So the variety is there, and the talent isthere. What’s not there is the price.

The Hernando Music Fest is absolutelyfree. That’s no admission cost either day.

The way the sponsoring organizationsmake money is through the parking fee, which is a paltry $5 donation. Throw inwhatever you choose to eat and drink, andit’s still a pretty cheap way to enjoy a cou-ple of days full of music. Just look at whatother music festivals are charging, and you’llsee what I mean. Hauling recyclable cans, bottles andpaper to the curb is a habit that is secondnature to many people who worry aboutthe environment.

But, how about getting creative and up-cycling a few items?

Take a pair of jeans and repurpose themas aprons. Or take costume jewelry and fab-ric scraps, and use them to makebookmarks.

Upcycling is defined as the process oftransforming a recyclable item in to a newproduct of better quality or better environ-mental value, according to Pasco UpcycleFestival organizers.

The festival hopes to get people as inter-ested in upcycling as they are in recycling.

“What can you do with these items be-fore they ever get to the curb?” askedKristen King, coordinator for Keep PascoBeautiful.

The first-time festival will be on Nov. 14from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the LittleEverglades Ranch, at 17951 Hamilton Roadin Dade City. About 2,500 people are ex-pected to attend.

There is no admission charge, but therewill be a $5 parking fee collected by thevenue to offset some of its costs.

As a first time event, there will be no feescollected from vendors. More environmen-tally friendly vendors are being sought, including those with fresh produce typicallysold at farmers’ markets.

The festival will feature numerous upcy-cle vendors, including makers of palletfurniture and jewelry from recycled house-hold items.

Vendors also will sell items such ashomemade soaps and pepper jellies.

Many individual vendors who upcycle asa hobby will offer items including braceletsand pendants from utensils, or aprons madefrom jeans.

A hands-on demonstration will showchildren how to make bookmarks from re-cyclable items around the house.

Food trucks, including Hillbilly Farmsand Philou’s Cajun on the Geaux, will be onsite.

Bluegrass bands, the Michigan Misfits andMean Mary, will provide entertainment.

“We are so excited to launch this newevent,” King said, in a press release announc-ing the festival. “It gives us the opportunity

to show individuals how they can not onlyreduce their waste, but also release theircreative genius at the same time.”

Nov. 15 is National America RecyclesDay, a national initiative of Keep AmericaBeautiful. Everyone is encouraged to partici-pate in “doing one thing” to recycle andreduce waste.

Event sponsors of Pasco UpcycleFestival are Keep Pasco Beautiful and PascoCounty.

Organizers plan to make this festival anannual event.

The Laker/Lutz News Staff Report

More than 1 million Americans are diag-nosed annually with diabetes, and while it is acondition that can be largely be managedthrough proper diet, exercise and medication, many people with diabetes will develop seri-ous health complications during their lives.

That’s why diabetes screenings are so im-portant.

With early detection, most individuals canmake the lifestyle changes necessary to avoiddeveloping the disease, according to a newsrelease from Bayfront Health Dade City.

“Often patients who have prediabetesaren’t even experiencing symptoms,” saidDr. Joseph Nystrom, a family practice physi-cian, in the new release.

“If we can test at-risk patients and catchthe condition early, we can often help themavoid diabetes and associated health prob-lems, such as glaucoma, kidney disease andheart disease,” Nystrom added.

Diabetes is a metabolic disease in whichthe body’s inability to produce any orenough insulin causes elevated levels of glu-cose, or sugar, in the blood.

Those who have prediabetes have bloodsugar levels that are higher than normal butnot high enough to be classified as full-blown diabetes, the release states.

According to the American DiabetesAssociation, 86 million Americans aged 20and older had prediabetes in 2012 and morethan 29 million Americans had diabetes.

Physicians previously tested for diabetesand prediabetes by administering a glucose

tolerance test, which required patients tofast for several hours before having blooddrawn for a lab test. The test would give pa-tients a score, with those scoring higherthan 100 considered prediabetic and thosescoring 126 or higher considered diabetic.

But physicians recently have begun fa-voring a different method of diabetestesting, called the A1C test.

This test can provide a more accurate as-sessment by measuring the average level ofglucose in the blood over the previous twoto three months.

An A1C level of 5.6 is considered normal,5.7 is considered prediabetes and 6.5 orhigher is considered diabetic.

“We recommend individuals who are atelevated risk for diabetes, particularly thosewith a family history, get tested annually,”Nystrom added.

Although genetics can contribute to therisk of developing diabetes, individuals whoare overweight, physically inactive, havehigh blood pressure, certain racial heritage(African-American, Latino, Native American,Asian-American and Pacific Islander) and ahistory of gestational diabetes are amongthose at increased risk.

Individuals who are concerned about theirdiabetes risk, or who have been diagnosedwith the disease, should see their primarycare physician, Nystrom recommended.

By working closely with their physician, the condition can be managed or even pre-vented.

If you need assistance finding a doctor, call(877) 362-5321 or visit BayfrontDadeCity.com.

And, the Oktoberfest thatthe couple so thoroughly en-joys has its roots in history, too.

The popular German festi-val traditionally starts in thethird weekend of September. It began with the RoyalWedding, which took placeon Oct. 12, 1810, whenCrown Prince Ludwig, later tobecome King Ludwig I, wasmarried to Princess Thereseof Saxony-Hildburghausen.

acres to Pasco County in 2012 with a stipu-lation that if a sports complex didn’thappen, then a park would be developed.

Since then, the county has sifted throughone proposal after another, but none haspanned out.

The family is eager to see work startingat the site.

It came down to one question for them.“What can we do as a family to get this

off the ground and make it a reality?” J.D.Porter asked.

Within the past two weeks, they present-ed county officials with a new vision for atown center-style community at Wiregrasswith homes, hotels and retail. The proposalincorporates the field house, but also drawsa grander vision for a wetlands area withtrails, a convention center and/or perform-ing arts center at PHSC’s Porter Campus, a

public park and green space for Wiregrassresidents.

It would all be pedestrian-friendly, inter-connected space linking to Florida HospitalWesley Chapel, the college and a publicpark. The future Raymond James commer-cial site, with 1 million square feet of officespace within six buildings, also is pluggedinto the plan.

The Porter’s proposal could lead to aland swap agreement returning a portion ofthe donated land to the family to accommo-date their town-center project and alsoallow for a public park. The land could besplit along several geographic patterns.

It was a lot to digest as county commis-sioners met on Oct. 27 in a publicworkshop with the Tourist DevelopmentCouncil.

Pasco County Strategic PolicyAdministrator Richard Gehring clickedthrough a slide show of changing scenarioson how development could proceed, and

meet everyone’s expectations.Discussion with the Porters is ongoing.“There are moving parts,” said Gehring.

“The geography is not fixed at this time. We’re trying to make it a win-win for asmany people as possible.”

Gehring said it would take about threeweeks to write a proposal for the fieldhouse. Bidders would have 60 days to sub-mit their plans.

The recommendation to build a fieldhouse emerged from a study by Chicago-based Johnson Consulting Co.

The facility would be between 85,000and 100,000 square feet, built on five toseven acres. There would be up to eight bas-ketball courts, four to six multi-purposerooms and lockers. It would operate under aprivate/public partnership agreement.

By the fifth year of operation, about100,000 people a year would use the facili-ty, said Charlie Johnson, the company’spresident.

In the future, outdoor ball fields could beadded, he said.

“You can start with indoor, and growfrom there,” Johnson said.

The field house and the Porter’s futuredevelopment project is a sound one, saidPasco County Commissioner Mike Moore.

“To me, we’re getting everything the(Johnson Consulting) report stated butabove and beyond,” he said. “I’m excited…looking at it.”

Porter said the proposal allows the fami-ly to “control our destiny,” while alsoproviding park space to county residents.

He anticipates consulting with Pascoparks and recreation officials to determinehow to develop the park.

“We’ll ask them what they are lackingthere,” Porter said.

If the land swap is done, he added,“We’d start immediately laying it out asamenities, not just for Wiregrass but every-body.”

“We’re thrilled we’re not driving toEllenton,” said Jenkins who lives in Land O’Lakes. But, she added: “My husband’s nothappy about this.”

Kaiya Davis and her son, Jamal McIntosh, had a quick hop to the mall, from their newhome in Lutz.

Davis took the day off to check out theshops.

McIntosh is starting a job with theFlorida Department of Transportation andsoon could be working on highway projectsto ease traffic woes at the interchange ofInterstate 75 and State Road 56.

“Lots of new beginnings,” said Davis.Besides a being new shopping venue, the

new homeowner sees an added bonus fromthe mall.

“The price of property values are goingto go up,” she said.

Another Lutz resident Karen Fortin, and

her mother, Margaret Carreiro, left ColumbiaSportswear, one of their favorite stores, carry-ing bags containing shoes and a fleece jacket.

The travel time to the shopping destina-tion can’t be beat, they said.

“We’re right here, 2 minutes from home,”Fortin said.

Caralee and Charles Shapero had alonger trip, coming over from Clearwater. But, they might come back.

“We will see,” said Caralee Shapero. “It’smissing a Bath & Body Works, but it is closer. So far so good.”

They are Yankee Candle enthusiasts andwere ready to snap up a deal – five candlesfor $50.

“We’ll be walking out with 10,” saidCaralee Shapero.

Natalie Scheer and Blanca Jordan satdown on a bench with Disney Store Outletbags at their feet. They rattled off stores theyhad been to and others they were ready totake on.

“We’re only halfway there,” said Scheer, who along with Jordan, works at FloridaHospital Wesley Chapel.

They expected to spend two hours tothree hours scouring the mall for bargains.

“We threw our bags in the car already,”said Jordan. “This is our second round. It’swonderful. We don’t have to go all the wayto Orlando.”

Jordan said she sometimes goes toWestfield Citrus Park. But, she added: “Outletsare much better. You get better deals.”

The women liked the setting, too.Jordan held out her cellphone showing

off a picture of the two framed in the back-ground by the mall’s blue water lagoon andbridge.

“It looks like we’re on vacation,” saidScheer.

Coaches are used to giving stock an-swers to common questions. Take thingsone game at a time. Play hard for 60 min-utes. And, even if they’re facing a rival, it’sjust another game.

Zephyrhills head coach Reggie Robertsisn’t toeing that line when it comes to theannual Pasco-Zephyrhills football matchup.

“It’s not just another game. It’s the Nine-Mile War,” Roberts said, referring to thedistance between the two schools.

“This is a rivalry game,” he said. It’s also a game that has hurt Zephyrhills in

seasons past. Three of the past four years, aloss to the Pirates cost the Bulldogs a playoffspot. Last season, the game didn’t impact theteams ability to make the playoffs, and itreached the postseason for the first timeunder Roberts’ tenure. But the Bulldogs stilllost to Pasco.

For this season’s game, there is no playoffspot on the line. At 7-2, Zephyrhills is alreadyplayoff-bound. And at 4-5, Pasco won’t be inthe postseason. But the game still meanssomething, and Roberts has nothing but re-spect for Pasco.

“They’ve played some good football,”Roberts said, noting that the Pirates havefaced a tough schedule. He also singled outtheir talented quarterback, Michael Penix Jr.,as a player Zephyrhills needs to contain inorder to be successful.

“We’re not going to sleep on them, think-ing that they’re a .500 team. We know better

than that. We know that they’ll be ready toplay, and that we’re going to have to playour game,” he said.

Pasco has played its game each of Roberts’five previous seasons as head coach atZephyrhills. The Bulldogs are 0-5 against thePirates during his tenure. It’s a far cry fromthe success he had as a student atZephyrhills: He never lost to Pasco as a player.

Roberts remembers the energy and ex-citement of the game when he was on thefield, and said he won’t need to give a bigmotivational speech to get his own playersready for the game.

“You don’t have to say much,” he said. “IfI have to hype a kid up to play that game, I

don’t know if he has blood running throughhis veins.”

Roberts definitely won’t have to hype upreceiver Jackie Tucker. The senior wide receiv-er has been through several of the losses toPasco, and he wants to finish his high schoolcareer as a winner in the rivalry game.

Tucker knew they had a lot to prove inthis game, even before the season started.

“I have to show my doubters what wecan do. They say that Pasco’s always been ontop in the county. At Zephyrhills, we’re hereto show them different,” Tucker said back inAugust. “It’s going to be a crazy game.”

With home-field advantage, Roberts ex-pects the fans to contribute to the

atmosphere. In fact, the game is perfectpreparation for the postseason, Roberts said.Pasco-Zephyrhills has a built-in playoff at-mosphere, and it’s a good way for him tosee how the team handles a pressure situa-tion with a lot on the line.

It’s up to his players to perform at a highlevel, but he expects the fans to do theirpart to keep the enthusiasm level high.

“We have a new dog pound section ofthe stadium. I’m sure that’s going to bepacked and faces painted,” he said. “We havethe truck pound on the north side of theend zone. I’m sure the loud engines will berevving, and those guys will be tailgatingfrom the back of their trucks. There’s no

The early morning fog wasthick, but a steady stream ofvehicles turned into the en-trance as the sun was rising

at Tampa Premium Outlets. There were plenty of police and mall

security on hand to guide cars, as theypulled into the mall’s massive parkinglots.

Cars were arriving two hours ormore before the shopping destinationopened its doors to shoppers on Oct. 29at 10 a.m.

Even those who came to see the rib-bon-cutting ceremony, which took place20 minutes before official opening, foundthat cars were nestled close to the en-trance long before any speeches began.

By the looks of the cars, the openingattracted a diverse group. Sports cars andSUVs shared the lot with pickup trucksand foreign compacts. Luxury vehicleswere parked next to simple economycars. Some looked brand new; otherswere a bit past their prime. A little rusthere, a new paintjob there, and child-of-the-month bumper stickers were all partof the parking lot decor on opening day.

Before long, good spaces were at apremium.

As the mall officially opened, driverscontinued making the slow crawl to-ward empty lots, which filled quickly.Less than an hour after the mall opened, valet parking was full, and cars were di-rected to an overflow lot.

From the outset, the outdoor mallwas ready for the crowds.

Police were directing traffic trying toget to the entrance, which competedwith the typical morning rush on StateRoad 56 on a limited-visibility morning. But, there were no delays or gridlock onthe roads surrounding the mall. Overall itwas a smooth experience, and didn’t getin the way of what people came to see.

Despite the music and fanfare, thebiggest draw was the stores.

Nearly 100 stores were open, andthey were well staffed, and ready to wel-come patrons into their stores.

Some drew plenty of interest, whilefoot traffic was more modest at others.

People lined up at Coach, waiting toget in.

Overall, it wasn’t a mad rush of deter-mined bargain hunters like you mightfind on Black Friday. Instead, it was an in-terested, patient group, appreciating thespectacle and celebration of a newvenue, and taking the time to appreciatethe details while they surveyed theirnew shopping options.

The outdoor areas were at least asbusy as the shops themselves. Visitorstook photos by the mall’s elaborate foun-tains. They relaxed on benches andchairs. Or, they strolled throughout themall, getting a feel for the lay of the land.

They did plenty of shopping, too. Those scoring opening-day deals be-

came walking billboards for stores likeDisney Store Outlet and Under Armour, carrying bags that advertised their morn-ing haul.

Overlooking the Lagoon Court, Grace Cann, left, and Joan Johnson, both of New Tampa, found a few moments to relax amidst their shopping at Tampa Premium Outlets.

FRED BELLET/PHOTOSWith every grand opening comes a ribbon cutting. Here, left to right, Danielle De Vita, seniorvice-president of development, Pasco County Commission Chairman Ted Schrader andStephen Yalof, Simon’s chief executive officer of Premium Outlets, cut the ribbon signalingthe opening of Tampa Premium Outlets.

Tampa Premium Outletsenjoys smooth opening

Beth McDonald, left, of Odessa, and her daughter, Karen Jenkins, of Land O’ Lakes, look overthe schedule of events planned for the grand opening of the new Tampa Premium Outlets.

Fitted with a backpack for shopping, Margie Hamman, far left, of Homosassa, was not onlyone of the first to arrive at the new outlets on State Road 56, but also was first in line andawaits the opening of the Coach shop last Thursday morning. Hamman bought severalhandbags during the opening day at Tampa Premium Outlets.

COURTESY OF JOHN J. DRAPER

A wetland inhabitantThis bird, believed to be an immature black-crowned night heron, was perched on topof John J. Draper’s pool screen in his backyard. He sees hawks, eagles, turkey, sandhill cranes, rabbit, possum, deer, raccoon and fox, but this was the first time he spot-ted one of these. The adult birds are short-necked, relatively short-legged and stoutherons, Draper says.
