Manion [email protected] It’s no secret that when the economy tanked, construction companies and related industries were hit hard. “When everything crashed, we all had to really pare down. Our staff went almost in half,” said Linda Cox, CEO of Cox Fire Protection Inc.“Construction just came to a screeching halt.” The economy has been picking up, but there’s a shortage of skilled laborers, said Cox, whose company has been involved in numerous northern Hillsborough and Pasco county projects. Now that construction is moving again, opportunities for work are increasing, Cox said. “Projects that had been put on hold, now have funding again,” she said. And, there are new initiatives, too, across the Tampa Bay re- gion, she said. “If you ride downtown (Tampa) and look at the tower cranes, that’s just a really good indication of how the industry is going. There’s a lot of really exciting stuff happen- ing in Pasco County, too,” said Cox, whose company does sprinkler systems and alarm systems, primarily in commercial construc- tion projects, including hospitals, schools and other large construction projects. “We work primarily through general con- tractors, or directly for owners,” she said. But now, companies like hers are facing a different problem. “We’re just not replacing the skilled work force as quickly as people exited it,” Cox said. After the economy crashed, she said,“a lot of Baby Boomers said, ‘Well, OK, I’m outta here’” and retired. Others switched to different lines of work and haven’t re-entered the construc- tion force, she said. “Over the summer, we actually had to tell our sales team, don’t bid any more work, be- cause we can’t staff it. We could have sold more work than we had crews to staff – which is a wonderful thing and a terrible thing,” Cox said. The problem isn’t limited to the Tampa Bay region. Cox said her husband, Ron, recently has been appointed by Gov. Rick Scott, to sit on the Governor’s Apprenticeship Council. The Associated Builders and Contractors is very active in the apprenticeship arena, running a large program that involves ap- prenticeships available in areas such as electrical, plumbing, masonry, heating venti- lation and air conditioning, and fire protection, Cox said. There’s also a need to raise awareness about opportunities available for skilled la- borers, she added. To that end,“The Associated Builders and Contractors is working with local districts to ensure our industry is represented as a valuable career path for students entering the work force,” Steve Cona III, president/CEO of Associated Buildings and Contractors, Florida Gulf Coast, said via email. It’s a message that needs to be reiterated, Cox said. “In our generation, a lot of kids just sort of followed along in the family footsteps, and construction was just sort of a viable option for a lot of young men,” she said.“And then, the trend really in high school began to be,‘If you are a bright student, college is the right pathway for you.’” But, the message that needs to be shared now — with young men and young women — is that college isn’t the only path to a bright future, Cox said. “There are some other equally lucrative, professional kind of avenues that don’t re- quire four years of college and $100,000 of student debt,” she said. The national economy is recovering fromone of the worst downturns in the nation’shistory, but it is a recovery that is just “mud-dling along,” according to Sean Snaith, directorof the Institute of Economic Competitivenessat the University of Central Florida.

“It was the worst recession since theGreat Depression,” he said. “The recovery isalso historical. It’s historically weak.”

The good news for Florida and for PascoCounty is that they are seeing better growththan the nation as a whole.

On the plus side for Pasco, people aremoving into the county.

“More people brings more economic ac-tivity,” said Snaith, who was a guest speakerat the Annual Economic Forecast Luncheonhosted by the Pasco EconomicDevelopment Council on Feb. 5 at theTampa Bay Golf & Country Club.

“People and employment growth willcontinue. We see some momentum. There’sa lot of construction activity on the way.”

Florida’s growth is outpacing the nation,

he said. Florida’s growth rate is about 4 per-cent, compared to a national rate of 2percent.

The state also posted good numbers forjob creation in the last quarter of 2015, andthat likely will continue.

“That’s our launching pad,” Snaith said.“We still have momentum on our side.”

He is especially bullish on the Interstate4 corridor, which he described as the “breadbasket for growth.”

According to Snaith, the recession endedin 2012. But, Craig Weber, general managerof Crown Community Development, sawsigns of recovery in the Wesley Chapel areaof Pasco as early as 2010. Signs continue tobe good, he said.

Crown is the developer of Seven Oaksand Watergrass.

“Sales of lots are really strong,” Webersaid.

Interstate 75, State Road 56, the widen-ing of State Road 54 and The Shops atWiregrass led the way.

More development has followed, includingTampa Premium Outlets and Cypress CreekTown Center. “All of this makes it the new cen-

ter for Tampa Bay growth,” Weber said.Locally, businesses are benefiting from

the area’s growth as well, said Tim Fredritz, account executive at Dex Imaging Co.

The national chain has 25 offices in

Florida, including one in Hudson. The com-pany had healthy growth even during thebad economy, Fredritz said. “People alwaysneed copiers.”

But, new businesses in Pasco, includingWesley Chapel, mean new opportunities, hesaid.

There are caution signs, Snaith warned.Global economies are slowing, notably in

China. Brazil could be headed into its worstrecession in 100 years. Greece has 25 per-cent unemployment overall, with youthunemployment at 50 percent.

One in eight Canadians come to Floridaeach year, but Snaith said the Canadian dol-lar has fallen in value against U.S. currency.

“That’s going to change behavior andhow they spend when they are here,” Snaithsaid

There also is the potential for a nationalrecession, though not on the scale of thelast one.

“Don’t go into your panic room,” Snaithsaid. “Generally speaking, you’re in a regionthat’s growing faster than the state and gen-erally faster than the nation. This is a prettygood place to be.”

Economic recovery slow, but steady

A planning oversight committee gavetentative approval to a large display sign forCostco Wholesale, slated to open next toTampa Premium Outlets.

It takes the membership warehousechain a step closer to permitting and con-struction. Company officials have notannounced an opening date.

Costco received approval in January forthe sale of beer, wine and liquor.

The approximately 153,000-square-footwarehouse building will have a separateliquor store of about 2,100 square feet.

Architect Doug Brookbank, principal atMG2 Global, represented the company atthe Jan. 25 hearing at the county’sDevelopment Review Committee.Committee members review recommenda-tions from the county’s planningdepartment.

The Pasco County Commission willhave the final say.

Costco officials asked to increase thesign’s size from about 600 square feet toabout 1,700 square feet.

In return for the larger sign, the compa-

ny would forego installing nine smallersigns that met county requirements.

If the larger sign were approved, theoverall sign space would be reduced by 35percent.

“We believe this is not unreasonableconsidering the size of the structure (ware-house) itself,” said Denise Hernandez, thecounty’s zoning manager.

Costco would join a cluster of new re-tail either already opened or underconstruction, off State Road 56 at Interstate75.

Tampa Premium Outlets opened inOctober with nearly a 100 outlet stores in-cluding Nike, Coach, Tommy Hilfiger andFossil.

Culver’s restaurant and Cheddar’sCasual Café are under construction. Chick-Fil-A, Kohl’s, Panda Express, and BJ’sRestaurant and Brewhouse also areplanned as part of Cypress Creek TownCenter.

A new cinema and grocery store are inthe offing for the next phase of develop-ment on the former Wiregrass Ranch.

A preliminary site plan shows a 1,050-seat movie house and a 30,000-square-footgrocery store, according to county records.

Plans also show three, four-story build-ings containing about 250 apartments. And,the development also includes shops andrestaurants.

Forest City Enterprises, the developers ofThe Shops at Wiregrass, and NRP Group arepartnering on the project on about 34 acresof the former Wiregrass Ranch property inWesley Chapel, off State Road 56. The newdevelopment, located next to The Shops atWiregrass, will be linked to the mall, withshared access points for motorists andpedestrians.

A dine-in cinema is a possibility, thoughno tenant announcements have been made.

“We wanted to do something we

thought would be complementary to theproperty next door – The Shops atWiregrass,” said Abbas Hasan, manager ofplanning and development for theCleveland-based Forest City Enterprises.

“It really adds to the experience of thearea, providing customers with extra op-tions than restaurants and shopping.”

A construction start date is on hold untila permit is received from the U.S. ArmyCorps of Engineers. An application was sub-mitted in September.

“That’s kind of driving the entire sched-ule,” Hasan said.

In the meantime, details such as parking, landscaping, and the design and look of thenew development are proceeding.

“All these things take time, so we’re try-ing to work on these items now,” he said.“Whatever we can move ahead, we will.”

The overall project includes apartments, seven garages, a clubhouse, a dog park, pooland fitness area. About 120,000 square feetis set aside for retail and/or restaurants in-cluding the cinema and grocery store.

Ideas clash for solving traffic woesBy Kathy [email protected]

A proposal for a flyover at State Road 54and U.S. 41 got a big thumb’s down at a re-cent transportation task force meetingaimed at finding solutions for reducing con-gestion on one of Pasco County’s busiesteast/west corridors.

In fact, the idea of a flyover anywherealong State Road 54 and State Road 56 be-tween U.S. 19 and Bruce B. DownsBoulevard met stiff resistance.

About 50 people, including members oftwo separate task forces, residents andPasco County officials, met Feb. 2 atRasmussen College to discuss options.

Task force members pressed county offi-cials to consider using frontage roads toease congested intersections and to pre-serve access to local businesses and shops.

The task force also approved a motion toask county planners to determine the feasi-bility of the frontage road option.

“Our solution is at grade, which is whatthe public wants,” said Tom Ryan, a taskforce member and economic developmentmanager at the Pasco EconomicDevelopment Council. “It (flyover) infringeson their quality of life. There is no wayaround it. It will affect quality of life.”

Ryan was joined by task force memberRobb Sercu who also tossed out ideas for at-grade alternatives rather than flyovers.

The meeting was the first joint session ofEast and West task forces, which beganmeeting separately in September. Each wasappointed as an advisory board to the PascoCounty Metropolitan PlanningOrganization. Their task is to recommend upto five alternatives that the MPO can consid-er for future transportation projects overthe next 20 years. One option is not to buildanything.

The West Task Force is studying StateRoad 54 from west of U.S. 41, and the EastTask Force, from east of U.S. 41.

However, discussion at the joint meetingquickly focused on the intersection of StateRoad 54 and U.S. 41 as a priority that likelywill be the first road project to need fund-ing.

“That is the most congested location atthis time,” said Ali Atefi, a transportation engi-neer with MPO.

The Florida Department ofTransportation held a public hearing inJanuary to get input on two alternatives forelevated lanes over U.S. 41. Many who at-tended said they came away believing theywould pay tolls.

“That’s what got a lot of people upset inour area,” said task force member FredKnauer. “If I go to Lowe’s, I have to pay atoll?”

Atefi said tolls could be a source to payfor the roads, but that hasn’t been decidedyet.

County officials also noted that evenwith elevated lanes, there would be at-gradethrough lanes at the intersection.

Some of those attending the meetingwant tolls to be an option, to help reducecongestion.

“Toll roads do have a place,” said taskforce member Marilyn DeChant. “They take

drivers off grade and put them up (on ex-press lanes). They do have a place to beconsidered.”

But, task force member Susie Hoeller saidtoll roads could hurt elderly residents onfixed incomes and local businesses that dodeliveries.

“People in government, they don’t lookat the real impact on people’s lives,” shesaid. “I think it’s a bad idea.”

Whatever option that gains approvalshould be one that is feasible and reason-able, said Ryan.

And, any option that involves construc-tion will cause disruptions including thepurchase of right-of-way, he said.

“We shouldn’t hide away from discussingeminent domain. These are going to comeup,” he said. “There’s a business or two thatmight have to move.”

Keystone Community Church, at 21010State Road 54, also could be in the path offuture road construction.

“We’re in a growth mode now,” saidWayne Hawes, chairman of the church’sboard of directors. “Are we going to wasteour money if we expand our facilities?”

Even if funds were available now, Atefisaid construction could be between sevenand eight years away.

Funding more likely won’t be availableuntil after 2020.

Some people at the meeting expressed

frustrations and skepticism about the plan-ning process.

Dave Miller said the county’s long-rangeland use plan is too focused on increasingdensity.

“This is social engineering,” said Millerwho lives in west Pasco, off Little Road andState Road 54.

“They are trying to force people intohigh rises on transit lanes. You need tothrow this back at them (Pasco County andthe state). This is not workable,” Miller said.

Others seemed skeptical that their ef-forts on the task force would be takenseriously.

“Ultimately it’s going to be what theywant it to be,” said task force memberChristie Zimmer. “I’m praying it’s not that, and we won’t get something stuffed downour throats.”

Her remarks drew some applause.Task force members will complete sur-

veys in the next weeks to identify up to fiveconstruction alternatives, plus a no-build op-tion.

The West Task Force will vote on alterna-tives at its final meeting on March 28. TheEast Task Force will do the same at its meet-ing on March 31. Both of those meetingswill be from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., atRasmussen College.

The planning organization will do addi-tional study on the top selections.

employ 45 people. As part of the assisted living experience,

residents will be aided in hygiene, ambulat-ing, keeping track of medications, anddining.

In addition to assisted living, Lodges ofIdlewild will offer both memory care and in-dependent living services.

The memory care program, designed forresidents suffering from dementia orAlzheimer’s disease, will be a “secured unit”with a higher staffing ratio for additional at-tention.

The independent living program featuresindependent apartments where residentscan pay for “a la carte services” and transi-tion into the assisted living facility whenneeded.

A rough estimate for the monthly costfor a resident to live at the facility is $4,000,Almendares said.

The two best options for financial assis-tance for senior care is through theMedicaid Managed Long Term Care pro-gram, or the Veteran’s Aid (VA) andAttendance program attained by serving in awar, according to Angels Senior Living’swebsite.

The Medicaid route requires being onMedicaid and then applying for the programto pay an amount that may total 25 percentto 50 percent of monthly rent.

The veteran’s aid option requires an ap-plication through the U.S. Department ofVeteran’s Affairs. Financial assistance in thisprogram varies.

The location of the senior living center “fitwell into our geographic offerings,”Almendares said, adding that its proximity tothe Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz is a bonus.

To help promote social interaction, therewill be activity rooms for games, arts andcrafts, and exercise.

Mitchell, who grew up on Long Island,New York, shared his mother’s love for cats.

On Christmas Eve, when he was 5, thefamily heard a plaintive meowing.

“We opened the front door, and therewas the tiniest little black kitten all by him-self,” Mitchell said.

Clancy, as he was named, had found ahome.

It’s a cliché story, he said, but it’s true.Cats have freedom of choice, he said.

“They pick us. We don’t pick them.”Mitchell is a self-described ailurophile,

that is, cat lover. He is passionate about helping nonprofits

that find homes for abandoned cats and thathelp feral cats living on the streets.

He volunteers as a tour guide at Big CatRescue, an animal sanctuary in Citrus Park, near Tampa. The organization rescues andhouses exotic cats, including lions, tigers, bobcats and cougars.

A foster program at Big Cat Rescue tem-porarily houses kittens until they are readyfor adoption. The program is in partnershipwith Humane Society Tampa Bay.

Mitchell became a volunteer at Big CatRescue after taking a tour there about 15years ago.

A few years ago, while he was giving atour, a promoter on the tour commented onMitchell’s wit and humor. The promoter sug-gested that Mitchell put together a show.

So, Mitchell did.“The mission is to inform, raise money for

nonprofits and hopefully pay my expenses— though that is secondary,” Mitchell said.

While it wasn’t his college major, musichas been one of Mitchell’s chief interests foryears.

He has written lyrics and performedmusic, and for more than three decades, hehas played piano and sang at church, oftenas a soloist.

He’s constantly doing volunteer workwith cats.

Mitchell has given donations to thatgroup and others, including Humane SocietyTampa Bay and Humane Society of Pinellas. Both agencies have trap, neuter, vaccinateand return programs for feral cats, as well asoffering foster care and adoptions for do-mesticated cats.

“This is how you break the breedingcycle,” said Mitchell. “It’s a harsh life (for feralcats).”

Mitchell lives in Seffner with his wife, who also volunteered for 13 years at Big CatRescue. She now spends most of her timeoperating a boarding stable for horses.

“We are very much animal people,”Mitchell said.

And, of course, they have cats.“I told my wife I thought we should have

two. So, we have five,” he said.

The phone call came unexpectedly inOctober.

In passing, Curtis Beebe had told theowners of City Market Bistro that if theyever wanted to sell, he and his wife Rebeccamight be interested.

Within days of the call, Rebecca’s at CityMarket was signed, sealed and delivered.

By November, the Beebe’s were off andrunning with their third restaurant in fouryears. And, they were betting on a bright fu-ture for downtown Dade City, which isexperiencing a renaissance of restaurantsand shops.

“It’s exciting, and I’m investing in it, obvi-ously,” Curtis Beebe said.

Taking chances is nothing new for thiscouple.

They opened their first restaurant – ThePearl in the Grove – on rural St. Joe Road inSaint Joseph, amid kumquats, horses, cowsand hayfields.

The restaurant recently earned a GoldenSpoon from Florida Trend magazine, whichpraised the originality of its farm-to-tablecuisine.

LOCAL Public House and Provisions is agastro-pub in San Antonio with NewOrleans flavored comfort food and craftbeers.

Rebecca’s at City Market, at 14148 EighthSt., in Dade City, is starting with the formerCity Market Bistro’s menu of soups, salads, sandwiches and pizzas, and slowly introduc-ing new dishes.

Each of the couple’s ventures shares thesame philosophy. And, as Curtis Beebe put it:“Local is better.”

What goes on the plate comes as much a

possible from freshly grown and producedlocally, including pasture-fed beef.

Fish is from a local vendor, bread from anYbor City bakery, and vegetables from localgrowers.

“It is all custom made,” he said.If Curtis Beebe stands out as the prime

chef in the family-owned restaurants,Rebecca Beebe is just as hands-on behindthe scenes.

“Rebecca has the ability to taste food andknow exactly what it needs,” her husbandsaid. And, she’s been known to toss outrecipes that don’t meet her standards.

The restaurant that bears her name is nodifferent.

She spends her days teaching at PascoCounty Middle School and her nights over-seeing the details of running threerestaurants.

That includes menu selections, the menudesign, and pitching in to help with foodpreparations.

In the next semester, she plans to take asabbatical from teaching to focus more onthe newest restaurant acquisition.

Downtown Dade City is an opportunityto broaden the customer base.

Pearl in the Grove is an off-the-beatenpath kind of restaurant.

In downtown Dade City, though, “We getway more walk-in traffic. We have the ability

to serve a broader range of food. There issomething for everyone,” Curtis Beebe said.

The restaurant attracts a family crowd.“It’s classic and comfortable,” said

Rebecca Beebe. The Beebes both grew up in foodie fami-

lies.“My mother cooked everything from

scratch,” said Rebecca Beebe. “We bothcooked with our mothers.”

And, wherever they lived, the Beebespicked up new flavors and recipes from Tex-Mex to Native American.

Curtis Beebe had a long-time career in thecorporate world of information technology, but the economy’s downturn in 2007 lefthim jobless. And then, set him on a differentpath.

He began catering dinners, parties andspecial events, and getting positive feedbackon his menus.

Members of the Dade City Woman’s Clubwere among his first taste testers.

“That’s how we validated all this andthought we could make a living,” he said.

He doesn’t miss his past working life.“This is much more fulfilling,” he said.It has been a right-time, right-place experi-

ence in eastern Pasco County. New families, including millennials, are moving to the area,he said.

“They are all looking for authentic experi-ences,” Curtis Beebe said. “You can get it intowns like San Antonio, St. Joe and Dade City. There is a lot of cool stuff happening, whichmakes more opportunities,” he said.

Could there be a fourth restaurant in theirfuture?

“We’re not looking, but we weren’t look-ing when we found this (Rebecca’s),” he said.

If there is another restaurant, RebeccaBeebe said, “We’ll have to call it Serendipity.”

Jim Harte did not expect Spencer Peekto be playing soccer this year.

That’s because the head soccer coach forCarrollwood Day School didn’t see howPeek could recover from the 17 brokenbones the teenager sustained in a single-caraccident on Aug. 17, 2014.

Peek, 16 at the time, broke both armsand legs. He also broke his sternum andpelvis.

The accident, occurred near ChevalBoulevard, at Wimbledon Court, in Lutz, when Peek’s car hydroplaned because ofrainy conditions. The car hit a speed limitsign and an oak tree before sliding about 70feet sideways on the road.

“To watch him come back was hard toimagine,” said Harte, who has coached atCarrollwood for four seasons. “I honestlythought he wouldn’t play again.”

The Patriots’ soccer season is over. Theteam fell 3-0 to St. Petersburg Catholic onJan. 29 in the Class A region quarterfinals.

But, that doesn’t overshadow Peek’s im-pressive battle to get back onto the field, including four surgeries and extensive reha-bilitation.

“When he first came out of the wheel-chair, and I watched him move — and I’man optimist — I was looking at him moving, thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, I don’t know howhe’s going to do it,’” the coach said. “To ex-pect that he could be our starting centermidfielder is amazing. He has come so far.”

The accident left Peek wheelchair-boundfor about a quarter of his junior year.

Unable to play soccer during the 2014-

2015 season, Peek helped Harte on the side-lines, serving as a sounding board, of sorts.

Harte often turned to Peek for advice onin-game strategy and the use of personnel.

“I would consult him during the games,”Harte said. “He was very engaged on thatlevel. He was like an assistant coach.”

Peek said the opportunity to view the

game from afar turned out to be a “prettyunbelievable experience.”

“Coach Harte is such an amazing coach, and for him to show me the respect that hedid — being a junior in high school — andhe still listened to me,” Peek said. “I did learna lot from a different perspective, becauseI’ve always been a player on the soccerteam. For him to have the conversationswith me, to include me the way he didwas…eye-opening.”

Peek’s work on the sidelines helped himgain a deeper understanding of the game, helping to offset his initial loss in footspeed, athleticism and conditioning.

“He got by on his will and his brains. He’s a very smart player, and he reads thegame very well, which means he doesn’thave to run as much as someone who does-n’t read the game as well as he does,” Hartesaid about his team captain. “He anticipatesand knows where to find a play, and thinktwo or three passes ahead. He studies theopponent, and within the first 10 minutesof each game, he’s kind of got the opponentfigured out.

“Getting up and down the field was verychallenging, but he mitigated that by hisability to read the game,” Harte said.

Peek, also a former standout footballplayer at Carrollwood, said one of thebiggest challenges of performing on the soc-cer field was getting back into his “physicalbeing.”

Before the car accident, Peek was a well-built 6-foot, 190-pound teenager. By the timehe started walking again, Peek had witheredto 140-pounds.

“I had lost so much weight, I was almosta skeleton. I felt so much skinnier and so

much weaker,” said Peek, who has since re-turned to 190 pounds. “It was just physicallyabout gaining back my size, my legs, gettingmy mass back. I feel much more solid than Idid five months ago.”

Peek said the rehab and recoveryprocess was a battle, and noted that beingstuck in a hospital bed after the accidentwas tough.

“When you’re in that situation, at leastfor me, I couldn’t dwell on it,” he said.

Instead, Peek focused on the future.“It was about mentally keeping myself

on the track, and not straying off and feelingsorry for myself,” he said.

“I was unbelievably blessed to have myfamily and friends really rally around me.That was my source of strength,” he added.

Rendered completely immobile for threeweeks after the accident forced him to “seethe world through the eyes of somebodywho’s permanently handicapped,” he said.

That broadened his understanding, hesaid.

“To even get a glimpse of what (handi-capped) life is like just really shows youhow strong the people are that face that sit-uation permanently,” he said.

Despite the trials and tribulations, Peeksaid he wouldn’t change what he has gonethrough.

“The way I saw life before compared tonow — you think more about things afterexperiencing something like that,” he said.

“I just feel like I’m more conscious ofwhat I’m doing,” Peek said.

“Your entire outlook changes and youunderstand how quickly everything can betaken away,” he said. “I’m so much moregrateful for everything now.”

Land O’ Lakes boys basketball coach DavePuhlaski got his 400th career win when theGators defeated Sunlake High 76-40 on Feb. 3.

Many expected the longtime coach toreach the milestone on Jan. 29, when his teamheld a sizeable 20-point halftime lead overRiver Ridge, but the Gators collapsed and ulti-mately lost in overtime, 57-55.

“I thought we might get it then and couldfocus on the district (tournament) totally, but itdidn’t work out,” said Puhlaski, who’s in his27th season as head coach at Land O’ Lakes.

While a 400th win is an impressive coach-ing milestone, Puhlaski deflected credit for hisaccomplishment —instead praising his play-ers, assistant coaches and his wife, Erika.

“It’s just been the combination of a lot ofgood players over a lot of years and a lot ofgood assistant coaches,” he said. “And, my wife— she’s been at every win and every loss —she’s been an integral part of it.

“It just means I’ve been around for a longtime,” he added.

While Land O’ Lakes (14-9) enjoyed a 36-point victory over Sunlake (0-17), the Gatorstrailed 15-12 at the end of the first quarter in

the Class 6A, District 8 semifinal.“We were trying to do too much in the first

quarter,” said senior guard Taddeus Dixon. “Theteam just came together and said, ‘We have to(work) together and not individually.’”

Puhlaski said both defensive breakdownsand turnovers were to blame for the earlydeficit against an overmatched Sunlakesquad.

“They hit a few shots on us, and usually wetry to live off our defense, but we weren’t col-

lapsing or pushing the ball to the middle ofthe floor,” he explained. “We were not gelling.”

After the initial back-and-forth, the Gatorspulled away in the second half, outscoring theSeahawks by a 39-15 combined margin in thethird and fourth quarter.

“It felt really good for the whole team,”Dixon said about the win and his coach’s mile-stone. “We always say it’s never over ‘til it’sover.”

Land O’ Lakes athletic director Karen Coss

said Puhlaksi’s 400th career win “definitelyshows his dedication and his commitment tothe school.

“That is one heck of a milestone, that’s forsure,” Coss said.

Puhlaski’s success over the years also canbe attributed to his passion and his ability tomotivate, said Tedd Poore, who’s had threesons — Max, Jake and Nick — coached byPuhlaski.

“Everybody ‘s real excited for Dave. He’sbeen an institution in this community for over20 years,” Poore said. “A lot of kids have comethrough his program, and he’s been instrumen-tal in advising and guiding boys when theyneeded it the most.

“He really cares.”Puhlaski didn’t say how much longer he

plans to coach at Land O’ Lakes, but there’ssome indication he may stick around at leastuntil his son David Jr., who’s a sophomore, graduates from the school.

Coaches in Pasco County serve on annualcontracts, but Coss said she doesn’t foreseeany changes occurring with Puhlaski’s rolewith the program “as long as he’s teaching(physical education) here and wanting tocoach here.”

Prior to being named the Land O’ Lakeshead coach in 1989, Puhlaski served as an as-sistant at Ocala Vanguard for three seasons. That was followed by a one-year stint as an as-sistant at the University of Tampa.

gospel music,” she said.“They would have music nearly the en-

tire day, and then they had (what theycalled) ‘dinner on the ground,’” she said.

They spread blankets out on the groundand enjoyed a potluck feast, Wise explained.

She also noted that Wesley ChapelUnited Methodist Church, for whom manybelieve the community was named, operat-ed only from 1890 to 1892, at the corner ofState Road 54 and Boyette Road.

Besides its church life, Wesley Chapelwas known for its moonshining, gator hunt-ing and turpentine stills, Wise said.

The timber and turpentine industriesalso played a significant role, she said. And,many ranching operations were founded onland where timber had been depleted, andthe land was sold off for for tax deeds, Wisewrote.

Over time, many of Wesley Chapel’sranches and citrus groves have given way toshopping centers, homes, schools, churches,a state college and other developments.

Of all of the changes through the years,Wise thinks the construction of Interstate75 had the biggest influence on the commu-nity’s growth.

“I think that’s the most significantchange. Wesley Chapel would not be what it

is today without that. It really did change thelandscape,” she said.

As she conducted interviews, trackeddown records and gathered photographs,Wise developed a wealth of knowledgeabout Wesley Chapel.

Despite her prodigious research, though, there were some questions that she couldnot answer.

For instance, she couldn’t pinpoint theexact boundaries of the community – anissue still debated today.

And, she couldn’t determine preciselyhow the community got its name.

Some said it was named after an early set-tler. Others, claimed it was after John Wesley, founder of the United Methodist Church.

As for Wise? She’s content, for now, to leave those

questions open.

Writing about local history isnothing new for MadonnaJervis Wise.

The Zephyrhills woman traced the histo-ry of Zephyrhills, and also of Dade City, forbooks published by Arcadia Publishing, ofCharleston, South Carolina.

Now, she has written another book forthe publisher’s Images of America series. This one focuses on Wesley Chapel.

When the publisher asked her to do theWesley Chapel book, Wise knew it would bechallenging.

Unlike Zephyrhills and Dade City –which both have city governments, historicbuildings and established town centers,Wesley Chapel offered no clear place forWise to begin her research.

So, Wise relied on her background in ge-nealogy to help her track downdescendants of families with deep roots inWesley Chapel.

She began her quest by tracking downMarco Edward Stanley, of Gainesville, whoarranged for Wise to interview his mother,95-year-old Lillie Sapp Stanley.

The historian met with members of theStanley family, and that interview led to oth-ers.

When she interviewed David Brown,Michael Boyette, Bill Smith or members ofthe Stanley family, she discovered the fami-lies shared deep bonds.

“There was this cohesiveness among thesettlers,” Wise said. “They would talk abouteach other in this real, deep caring way.”

Putting together Wesley Chapel’s historybook meant interviewing scores of pioneerdescendants, culling through land records, visiting properties and even putting togeth-er a map to get a sense for what it used tobe like.

Through U.S. Census records and inter-views with primary sources, Wise learned thenames of the families of many early settlers, including Asbel, Barnes, Boyette, Bradley,Cooper, Ellerbee, Geiger, Gillette, Godwin,Hill, Kersey, O’Berry, Overstreet, Ryals, Smith,Stanley, Strickland, Thomas and Tucker.

Some of those names, she discovered, had various spellings, such as Stanley andStandley.

She also discovered that the community

was known by various names through theyears. Those names included Godwin,Double Branch, Wesley, Lemon andGatorville – and finally, Wesley Chapel.

One surprising discovery, she said, wasthat women have long been acknowledgedfor the prominent role they played in thecommunity.

“Pioneer women of Wesley Chapel wererevered for their tireless days of toil, with anurturing spirt and the skill to raise largefamilies,” Wise wrote.

For instance, Francis Asbury Barnes’granddaughters, Martha and Vida, played piv-otal roles in Barnes’ ranching operations. The women, Wise wrote, were “industriousmanagers of land and cattle.”

Photographs and anecdotes in the 127-page volume paint a portrait of a placewhere people worked hard and cared abouttheir neighbors. It was a community wherethe church was the central gathering place.

“This was a haven for the SingingConvention,” Wise said. “That’s somethingthat occurred a lot in the South, but it wasreally, really prominent here.

“It occurred any month that had a fifthSunday,” she said.

It was described by one descendant asWesley Chapel’s ‘Grand Ole Opry.’

“It was hosted usually at the DoubleBranch Church (now known as the FirstBaptist Church of Wesley Chapel), and peo-ple came from everywhere,” Wise said.

“When I interviewed Cullen Boyette, hesaid these barbershop quartets that were onthe radio would come here. Mostly, it was

A car parked at the end of a cypress log inthe 1930s illustrates the enormity of thetrees that were felled in the Wesley Chapelarea. Large timber companies or trustsacquired vast tracts of land that were deplet-ed of lumber. Many deserted the claims, once the limber was harvested and theproperties were sold for tax deeds.

Ranches were a significant part of Wesley Chapel’s history. An outstanding TexasLonghorn-Ankole bull was 15 years old and had a horn span of 54 inches, when he died atK-Bar Ranch in Wesley Chapel.

Mittie Lula Wells, standing in an orangegrove, was the daughter of MaryElizabeth Gaskin Wells and John WesleyWells. She married Fernie Pasco Cooperin 1908. Pasco Cooper, as he was called, cut lumber on land owned by J.D.Rockefeller. Lumber trusts, such as theowned by Rockefeller, preceded largeranching operations in Wesley Chapel.
