Nature will be an up-close experiencefor strollers, joggers, skaters and cyclists asthey navigate along the newest and mostnorthern segment of the Upper Tampa BayTrail.

Nearly 3 miles of the more than 4-miletrail segment cuts through Brooker CreekPreserve in Hillsborough County, betweenLutz Lake Fern Road and Van Dyke Road.

The ribbon cutting for the $5.6 millionproject will be Aug. 7 at 10 a.m., at the newtrailhead facility at 7020 Lutz Lake FernRoad. Funding came from Hillsborough,South West Florida Water ManagementDistrict (known as Swiftmud), and a federalgrant provided by the Florida Departmentof Transportation.

“It’s going to be a beautiful trail,” said Tina

Russo, Hillsborough’s regional planning co-ordinator. “It’s really awesome. This is such aunique experience being in the preserve.”

It also is a unique design forHillsborough.

The 12-foot asphalt path, with threeconcrete boardwalks through wetlands, isthe county’s first paved multi-use trail

through a preserve. The trail also is another link in a master

plan to create a regional trail system, and astatewide system.

Hundreds of children and adults spent arecent week at Exciting Idlewild BaptistChurch in a summer camp that combines alove for the arts, with the expression ofChristian values.

The camp began as a singing camp sev-eral years ago and has morphed into afull-scale arts camp.

There were sessions on everything frometiquette, to playing percussion tubes, toscrapbooking and violin.

Singing, acting, harp lessons and choreog-raphy were a few other choices for thecamp, designed for kids who have complet-ed second grade through fifth grade.

Kids were busy making high heels andminions in the cake-decorating class duringone recent morning. Others tried their handat origami, or had the chance to sing aBroadway tune. Some picked up pointers onfishing. Others helped build a theatrical set.Some strummed on guitars.

The campers come from all over to thecamp in Lutz, including some from as faraway as Orlando, said Susan Raabe, a campvolunteer.

Summer Sing is run by teenagers, whoare helped by adult volunteers. SheilaGoskie is the camp director.

In the words of 8-year-old Joshua Barnes:“It’s really fun.”

As a very young boy, Tim Beard wouldwalk a mile each way to buy a newspaper atthe store so he could devour stories abouthis beloved St. Louis Cardinals.

He admired such players as Lou Brock,Joe Torre and Bob Gibson — and delightedin reading about their pursuits.

He recalled that he was only 5 or 6 yearsold when he was making those treks to thestore.

Literacy and athletics were twin loves inhis life, until Beard decided he would spendless energy on athletics and give his full at-tention to education.

He grew up in poverty in the Panhandletown of St. Joe — and now he leads Pasco-Hernando State College.

Before becoming president of the col-lege on July 1, he served as a vice presidentat the college for eight years.

He claimed the role vacated byKatherine Johnson, who retired after adecade at the helm.

Beard is clearly excited about the possi-bilities.

As an internal candidate for the post,Beard said he had the advantage of under-

standing the college and knowing its pulse.“I know the institution. I know the flow. I

know the community,” Beard said.As PHSC’s new leader, he’s already start-

ing to carry out his game plan.He’s identified key focus areas. Those in-

clude increasing student retention anddegree completion rates, expanding partner-ships, and securing more funding to supportprograms.

To help retain students, Beard is launch-ing an initiative called Retention BehavioralInventory, or RBI, for short.

Nostalgia, newer songs in ‘Mary Poppins’By Michael [email protected]

Julie Nelson has a challenge as lead cho-reographer for the latest New Tampa Playersshow.

On one hand, it’s something most peopleknow.

On the other hand, it’s something peopledon’t really know at all.

“I think people know the songs morethan anything. I think they remember thesongs more than they remember the story-line,” Nelson said.

She’s talking about “Mary Poppins,” thestory made famous by the 1964 Walt Disneyfilm, and the latest New Tampa Players pro-duction based on the Broadway musical,which runs Aug. 7-9 and Aug. 14-16 at theUniversity Area Cultural DevelopmentCenter.

While the audience will probably recallthe story of the iconic nanny as it goesalong, songs like “A Spoonful of Sugar” and“Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” are ex-pected to be familiar from the beginning. SoNelson and her co-choreographer, JarrettKoski, have been tasked with bringing thosepopular elements to life. But, they also wantto let the audience follow the story, whichmight not be as well known to them.

For a musical, “Mary Poppins”, features agood amount of dialogue.

And, as a theater enthusiast for morethan 30 years, that suits Nelson well. Sheprefers a play that has a healthy amount ofstory to supplement the singing and danc-ing.

“I’ve seen some shows where it’s justsing-and-dance, sing-and-dance, sing-and-dance, and there’s not enough in-between,”

Nelson said. “So I do like when there’s agood ratio.”

There’s also the challenge of bridging thedifferences between the movie and the play,given the former is probably where mostpeople gained a fondness for the story.

The source for both comes from Britishauthor P.L. Travers who wrote eight chil-dren’s books with Mary Poppins as themagical nanny blown by the East wind toNumber 17 Cherry Tree Lane in London.She lands at the doorstep of the Banks fami-

ly, where she becomes nanny to the chil-dren.

The film included scenes where live ac-tors interacted with animation, which isn’tsomething a stage production would ac-commodate. Still, knowing that peopleremember the famous scene where DickVan Dyke, who plays a chimney sweep,dances with animated penguins, Nelsonwanted to give the audience a hint of whatthey recall from the film.

“We added a penguin-ist flair to ‘Jolly

Holiday,’ a movement that resembles thepenguins, just to touch on that little memo-ry,” she said.

She also got to work on songs that mightbe unfamiliar to many people. “Playing theGame” is a slower-tempo number that didn’tappear in the movie, and wasn’t a part ofthe original Broadway show. It was a funsong to choreograph since it features chil-dren playing the roles of toys and is a littledifferent from traditional “Mary Poppins”classics, she said.

Theater isn’t just a personal passion forNelson, who will teach theater at CorbettPreparatory School in Carrollwood this fall.It’s more of a family affair. Her twins,McKinnley and Rylie, have roles in the cur-rent production, and “Mary Poppins” wasthe first Broadway play they saw in NewYork. Nelson’s husband, Bill, also helps outbackstage.

Being in a theater family, Nelson appreci-ates the family friendly message andproduction of “Mary Poppins,” and its storyof ultimately bringing a family together. Shealso appreciates the opportunity to shareher interest in theater with the communityby taking part in a performance with suchwell-known songs.

“I’m an educator first. I’m very passion-ate about theater and the arts,” Nelson said.“Even in my classroom, just sharing my loveof the arts with others is always awesomefor me.”

Last summer, at thistime, we had just intro-duced our new largerformat that made TheLaker/Lutz News thesame size as most dailynewspapers.

Going bigger was aleap of faith becausemost newspapers in

Florida, and just about everywhere else,were shrinking in size and reducing staff.

We decided to buck this trend.Instead, we invested in our newspapers

by giving readers more stories and photosabout their community.

We did this by making the size of ourpages 30 percent larger. We also expandedour news coverage with more in-depth sto-ries and colorful photos of local peopleand community events.

It’s been a year since we launched ournew format, and my staff and I are oftenasked how we’re doing.

I’m proud to say we’re doing great!One way to measure our success is by

the recognition we receive from peers inthe newspaper industry.

The most important and prestigiousrecognition comes from The Florida PressAssociation and its annual Florida BetterWeekly Newspaper Awards competition.

We learned in late July that The Lakerand the Lutz News received 11 awardsfrom Florida Press for stories and photospublished in 2014.

This includes top honors in two cate-gories for our editor, B.C. Manion, and firstplace honors in three categories for pho-tographer Fred Bellet.

Our entries were among 1,600 total en-tries. A third of our entries received awards.That’s an accomplishment that makes mevery proud, and it serves as testimony tothe outstanding work produced by our edi-torial team every week.

To put these awards in perspective, theentries for The Laker competed against thelargest weekly newspapers in Florida,which often have more resources than wehave.

By contrast, our company is a smallbusiness independently owned by me.

Twelve of us work together to produceyour paper every week — doing every-thing from writing stories and takingphotos, to selling advertisements and creat-ing artwork, to designing and putting ourpages together. On top of all that, there’sthe business side of the newspaper, whichinvolves invoicing, statements, collectionsand cash flow.

My staff does everything connectedwith the newspaper except for printing itand throwing it in your driveway — bothservices that are contracted to outsidecompanies.

When I tell people the size of our com-pany, many marvel that such a small staffcan produce one of the best communitynewspapers in Florida.

Besides our writing and photographyawards, another way to measure our suc-cess is by the recognition we receive fromlocal business groups.

We received word earlier this summerthat our company was nominated in theservice/distribution category of the PascoEconomic Development Council’sIndustry of the Year Awards.

Earlier this summer we also were nom-inated as the small business of the year inthe Central Pasco Chamber ofCommerce’s annual awards competition.And, just last week we learned that we areup for an award in the same category inthe Greater Wesley Chapel Chamber ofCommerce’s annual awards.

We will find out in September whetherwe received an award from the PascoEDC or the Greater Wesley ChapelChamber of Commerce. And we send ourcongratulations to A.L. Saland InsuranceSolutions for being named the small busi-ness of the year for the Central PascoChamber.

Truly, it doesn’t matter if The Laker/LutzNews “wins” in award competitions.

What matters is that the business com-munity, our newspaper industry and ourreaders recognize and value the work wedo, and understand the contributions thatwe make to local businesses and to thecommunity we serve.

Like the hundreds of businesses whoadvertise in our pages, we experience thesame joys and challenges of working for, orowning, a small business. And like all suc-cessful businesses, we take incredible pridein the work that we do and are exuberantwhen our work receives recognition.

Pine View Middle School has begun aquest to become the first school in PascoCounty to offer a Middle Years Programme,under the auspices of the InternationalBaccalaureate Organization.

While the school is launching its candi-dacy for the MYP designation, it also hasended its stand-alone program for academi-cally gifted students.

Those decisions have sparked somepushback from parents who shared theirconcerns with the Pasco County SchoolBoard.

Some said they didn’t want to lose thestand-alone gifted program.

Others complained about a lack of buy-in by stakeholders before going down theMYP path.

Principal Jennifer Mathews-Crosby ac-knowledged the pushback from parents, butsaid she’s excited about the opportunitiesthe Middle Years Programme will offer.

Some people may have the wrong ideaabout what MYP is all about, she said.

“There is a misconception that whenyou have an International Baccalaureateprogram that it must be for those high-rigortype students,” Mathews-Crosby said. “We re-ally needed to break through thoseperceptions. The whole premise behind theMiddle Years Programme is about the wholechild.”

The beauty of the MYP is that it cele-brates the uniqueness of students, said PioRizzo, an assistant principal, whose childrenattended a Primary Years Programme inManatee County.

“IB celebrates the fact that all studentsare different. They learn in different waysand different styles, and IB focuses on that,”added Rizzo, who also taught mathematicsin an IB school. “We love the fact that it isfor everybody, that everybody can benefitfrom this IB philosophy,” he added.

Parents of academically gifted studentsmay be worried that their children will lose

educational opportunities, but Mathews-Crosby believes those students will benefitfrom the MYP approach.

She also noted that obtaining the MYPdesignation doesn’t happen overnight.

“It is a multi-year journey. That journeyfor most schools is three years,” Mathews-Crosby said.

“There’s going to be some reflection and

some learning for us, as we go through this,”she said.

“We’re going to be open-minded to peo-ple who maybe don’t necessarily agree withthe direction that we may be going, andhear their thoughts,” Mathews-Crosbyadded.

Not every MYP operates in the sameway, she noted. “We have visited otherschools in the state, and they are very differ-ent in a lot of ways.”

To get things started, the entire staff atPine View Middle will be trained in the MYPphilosophy on Aug. 14.

Teachers will be building their unit planswith the global perspectives of the MYP.

Mathews-Crosby believes the programwill expand learning opportunities for allstudents.

“It really takes it deeper and wider,” shesaid.

It takes what teachers are already teach-ing, but makes broader connections, sheexplained.

Kyle Ritsema, a new assistant principal atPine View Middle, said he’s glad to be a partof the new program.

“It’s a challenge, and it’s an exciting op-portunity that is not available anywhere elsein the county right now,” Ritsema said.

To help parents gain a better understand-ing of the MYP, Pine View will be sendingout an electronic newsletter monthly toshowcase what the school is working onthat month.

“Right now, the focus is on the task athand,” Mathews-Crosby said.

But she’s optimistic.“We are fired up. We’re excited. I think

the sky’s the limit, honestly,” she said.

In 1954, A. Kilbride Insurance began as asmall business with just one location. Today,61 years later, the Kilbride family still ownsthe business and is looking to expandbeyond their five locations.

It all began with Adrian Kilbride, whohad the aspiration to start an insuranceagency to help people find the coverage theyneeded. He moved his family from Boston toTampa and began handling personal insur-ance.

In 1981, Kilbride’s daughter, AdrienneDecker, bought the business from her dadand added commercial insurance lines,including commercial auto, business proper-ty, workers compensation, general liabilityand bonds. Adrienne also expanded thecompany’s personal lines, adding homeown-ers, flood, health and life insurance.

Fast forward another 34 years and nowAdrienne’s daughter, Nicole Gee, is plan-ning on buying the business from her moth-er and continuing the Kilbride family legacy.

A. Kilbride Insurance operates as anindependent agent, allows the company toserve clients better with many attractivechoices.

“Because our family has been in businessfor so long, we’ve been able to expand ourmarket of insurance companies through thetrust and reputation we’ve built,” saidAdrienne. “And because we have a marketof companies to choose from, we can shopfor companies that truly offer the best cover-age and best price for a client.”

Kilbride is different than other agenciesbecause it has multiple locations with eachone focusing on a different type of insurance.From the start, the company realized thatstaff members could not be experts in every-thing. So based on that premise, they hiredpeople who have different strengths andspread them out to their different locations.

For example, the office in North Tampa at1401 W. Busch Blvd. specializes in commer-cial policies, while their Land O’ Lakes loca-tion at 2436 Land O'Lakes Blvd. is focusedon personal policies and commercial.

Adrienne is very proud of each location,but is especially excited to see the recentgrowth and success of their Land O’ Lakesoffice. Working at this office for the past yearis April Sasser, who is a specialist in personallines.

“I was drawn to work for A. Kilbridebecause of the family atmosphere it offers,”said April. “As an insurance agent, I strive tosave clients money while giving them thebest coverage they can possibly have. I letthem know that I’m here for them.”

GET SCHOOL IMMUNIZATIONS EARLY

The Florida Department of Health inPasco County reminds parents to have theirchildren immunized early to avoid the back-to-school rush. Parents of kindergartnersand seventh-graders are encouraged to re-view their children’s immunization recordto ensure readiness for the upcomingschool year.

If parents do not have a copy of thechild’s immunization record, they shouldask their provider about Florida Shots, thedatabase that records immunizations.Students entering college also are encour-aged to ensure their immunizations are upto date.

The following vaccines are required forchildren entering preschool and grades Kthrough 12: diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis,measles, mumps, rubella, polio, chickenpoxand hepatitis B. Students entering collegeshould check with health services at theirrespective college regarding requirements.

The warm weather of summer createsmore opportunities for people to spendtime outside. Whether you are working, exer-cising or doing other activities, it isimportant to protect yourself from heat-re-lated illnesses like heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Know what to expect when you areplanning outdoor activities by checking thetemperature and heat index. Try to plan ex-ercise and outdoor activities during thecooler parts of the day, early morning andlate afternoon.

“Spending time in cool, air conditionedareas is the best way to prevent heat illness,but when you are in the heat make sure towear loose, light colored clothing and drinklots of water,” Dr. Carl Werne, a family prac-tice physician at Bayfront Health MedicalGroup, said in a release. “Adults over 65,young children, people with existing med-ical problems such as heart disease andpeople without access to air conditioningare at a high risk for suffering from a heat re-lated illness.”

Heat-related illnesses, such as heat ex-haustion and rash, occur when the bodycannot cool itself down in extremely hotweather. Heat stroke is the most severe formand can cause death or permanent disability

if treatment is not provided. Regularly checkon individuals who have a higher risk for get-ting heat illnesses, and do not leave childrenand pets in the car or outside in the heat.

Some of the warning signs for heat ex-haustion can be heavy sweating; weakness;cold, pale, and clammy skin; fast, weak pulse;nausea or vomiting and fainting. If you orsomeone near you is experiencing thesesymptoms, take the following recommendedsteps:

• Move to a cool location• Lie down and loosen clothing• Apply cold, wet cloths• Sip waterSigns of heat stroke include hot, red, dry

or moist skin, rapid and strong pulse or possi-ble unconsciousness. Heat stroke is anemergency. If you think someone is experi-encing symptoms, take immediate action:

• Seek medical attention, and dial 911• Move the person to a cool location• Reduce body temperature with a cool

bath or cloths• Do not give fluidsIf you do not have air conditioning in

your home, spend time in public places, suchas shopping malls, a public library or a heat-relief shelter during extremely hot weather.Even a few hours spent out of the heat cankeep your body cool.

northeast to the Suncoast Trail in PascoCounty. The new facility has a covered pic-nic pavilion, restrooms and ample parking.

Suncoast is a 42-mile trail that runs fromHillsborough through Pasco and toHernando County.

“I think we’re all looking forward tothese types of amenities,” said JamesEdwards, Pasco’s transportation planningmanager.

Construction of the path followed aneco-friendly design with much of the trail atgrade level to allow for natural water run-off.

Along the trail there are narrower, un-paved walkways into conservation areas.Russo said bicycle racks would be provided.

She envisions the trail as a two-for-onedeal, because it will appeal to local residents

who want to enjoy the preserve. But, it willalso have regional appeal for hikers and cy-clists who enjoy combining Upper TampaBay and Suncoast trails for longer distances.

Trails aren’t only for recreation.Commuters like them as well especially

as the systems expand, Russo said.Plans are under way to extend Suncoast.

Hillsborough is hoping to fill in a gap be-tween Van Dyke and a trailhead at PetersonPark that links the Upper Tampa Bay Trailwith Town ‘N Country. The nearby CourtneyCampbell Trail links Tampa and Clearwater.Eventually the trails through Pinellas,Hillsborough and Pasco could hit the 100-mile mark, Russo said.

Transportation planning and traffic stud-ies are looking at ways to increasecommuting options with park-ride facilitiesand public transit tied into trails.

“It’s a lot about transit and trails,” shesaid.

He plans to have weekly conference callswith PHSC administrators to keep the goalof improving student retention and degreecompletion rates at the forefront for the col-lege’s leadership team.

Together, they’ll review the data to seehow the college is doing. And, they’ll discussthe numbers, talk about why students with-draw and examine if there is anything theycould have done to prevent the with-drawals.

“The big piece is going to be a referralpiece,” the college president said. “If we findout that a student withdrew because of fi-nances, can we find a financial sourcewithin scholarships or other sources thatwould have helped this student stay inschool?”

Over the years, he said he has observedthat most of the time when a student with-draws, there is some type of problem in apersonal relationship or a difficulty in pay-ing tuition. Sometimes, students arestruggling academically.

“We want to have a referral source, orsources, to make sure these students are re-ceiving the kind of support they need tostay in school,” Beard said.

The college has a fund established by adonor that is specifically intended to helpstudents, who for whatever reason, are notperforming well, Beard said.

He wants to find more sources of addi-tional funding for the college.

That could be in the form of private con-tributions, or through other opportunitiesavailable at the state, regional, national or in-ternational level, he said.

For instance, he said he recently servedas a panelist at a conference for the NationalAssociation for Equal Opportunities.

While there, he met some federal offi-cials and learned about some money thatmight be available for colleges with ruralcampuses. He plans to pursue that possibili-ty.

He’s also talked with John Hagen, presi-dent and CEO of the Pasco EconomicDevelopment Council.

Beard said Hagen told him that “the fed-eral government is coming into anagreement with some major companiesacross the world that want to relocate in theUnited States. They are talking about com-munity two- and four-year colleges reallybeing around the table to develop curriculaand design programs to help meet theirwork force needs.”

That fits in nicely with the kind of workthe college is accustomed to doing, Beardsaid.

During the Great Recession, there wasnational recognition that college’s like PHSCcan play a vital role in helping people learnnew skills that equip them for today’s jobmarket, Beard said.

“Our certification programs, our socialscience degree programs, are designed justfor that. To take workers, retrain them, andget them back in the work force within ayear,” Beard said.

Besides helping to train people who arein the work force or returning to the workforce, the college also wants to help prepareyoung people for future careers, Beard said.

PHSC wants to partner with the Pascoand Hernando county school systems tobegin working with students at a youngerage.

“We want to start establishing careerpathways with students as early as middleschool,” Beard said. And that means makingconnections with the families of those mid-dle school students, he added.

The idea is to start early, so students grad-uating from those counties can achieve adegree or certification by the time they’re21, he added.

Partnerships are essential — to supple-ment and maximize the college’s resources,Beard said.

“We used to be state-supported, nowwe’re more state-supplemented. We’ve gotto have greater partnerships — with privatecorporations, with manufacturers,” Beardsaid.

He also wants to get faith-based groupsinvolved, to provide additional support forstudents.

Since assuming his post, Beard has beenmeeting with bankers, manufacturers, faith-based groups and civic organizations.

And it won’t stop there.“We’re not limiting our connections to

just local people, but also regional, state andnational,” he said.

He is hopeful that making these connec-tions will bear fruit, and he’s optimistic, too.

“We have some major prospects. So, youstay tuned,” Beard said.

Mollie Golicher was a skilled runner andwas expected to be a big part of WhartonHigh School’s cross-country and trackteams.

After all, her older sister, Kallie, was astandout runner for the school. Kallieearned a letter all four years of high school,was a team captain for both cross-countryand track, and won school awards for athlet-ic excellence.

So, even before she stepped onto a singletrack or course, big things were expected ofMollie.

“Her sister was kind of an all-everythingrunner, and everybody expects her to bethe same thing,” recalled Kyle LoJacono, theWharton boys’ cross-country and trackcoach who also spends a lot of time work-ing with the girls’ team.

For Golicher’s freshman and sophomoreyears, things went according to plan. Shewas one of the school’s top runners incross-country and track.

But then there were problems. Specifically, she had problems with her

hips.As she got older and continued to grow,

she was having trouble doing her normalrunning. Her hips would make clickingsounds, and she felt excruciating pain. Andthat made it impossible to be the athlete shewas expected to be.

“It got really bad, to the point that it hurtto walk around school,” Golicher said. “If Isat down for a while, my hips would hurtgetting up.”

With her junior year a wash, Golicher fo-cused on bouncing back her senior year,working hard and preparing to re-establishherself at the top of her sport.

She did what her coaches told her to do.She did everything right. Unfortunately,things went wrong.

As a senior, practicing became a constantexercise in pain. Instead of being able tofocus on running, Golicher was just tryingto get through the activity in one piece.

“The pain is just to the point where shecan’t get through simple runs sometimeswithout just breaking down crying, becausethere was so much pain,” LoJacono said.

At that point it would almost make senseto quit.

Golicher could have taken the easy pathand moved on to something else.

But if being a top runner wasn’t an op-tion anymore, neither was quitting.

Despite her struggles, Golicher became ateam captain in both cross-country and

track. And she took the leadership role seri-ously.

“In senior year when I became a captain,I knew I had to support my team no matterwhat I was going through, to push theyounger runners to their full potential andto push the team in general, and be a leaderand role model for the younger runners,”

Golicher said.She also got support from Kallie, now

running for the College of Charleston, aDivision I school in South Carolina. She en-couraged her little sister to look at the bigpicture, and not give up on the idea of run-ning in college herself one day.

She followed her sister’s advice. She en-

couraged and supported the top runners —most of whom were freshmen and sopho-mores.

Her attitude and knowledge wasn’t justhelpful to the team.

According to LoJacono, it was instrumen-tal to their success.

“We could not have won districts in bothcross-country and track without Mollie. Shewas like having another coach out there,” hesaid.

As a result, the girls cross-country teamwon their district for the first time in sixyears, reaching the state level of competi-tion. The track team also continued itswinning ways, claiming their secondstraight district crown.

And Golicher kept running as well. Thepain lessened over time — becoming moremanageable — through stretching andstrength conditioning.

She also kept working to improve hertimes.

That effort also paid off.Golicher will enter her freshman year at

Wofford College in South Carolina as a run-ner, while she studies sociology andbusiness.

So, despite her challenges in high school,Golicher, like her sister, will run for aDivision I program in college.

She also realizes that she became a bigpart of Wharton’s success after all. It justwasn’t the role she thought she wouldplay.

“I was really proud of them, and how farthey’ve gone and how far they pushedthemselves to even get to states,” Golichersaid. “I tried my best to be a role model forthem, and support them and help thempush themselves to get to states and run thebest times they could.”

The Land O’ Lakes High School UnifiedSpecial Olympics Soccer Team is a littleheavier this week after attending theWorld Games in Los Angeles.

Representing the United States, theteam took home the bronze medal after

competing against the best of other na-tions around the world. They tied China0-0 in a hard-fought defensive battle. Theydefeated Luxembourg, 4-2. And they fell toLiechtenstein in a high-scoring affair, 5-4,and to the Czech Republic in a tight con-test, 2-1.

That left a rematch with China to de-

termine who would claim the bronzemedal for their country. This time, theUnited States came out on top, and theteam left the field with a medal aroundtheir necks and a lifetime of memories.

While the craft of Bonsai yields beautiful results, be prepared for dirty hands. Here, SandyRuddock transplants a ponytail palm that normally grows to 10-feet tall. But through a seriesof wires, the plant, which is actually in the lily family, is stunted to a little more than a foot.

Basically, any plant or tree that can be grown in a container can be made into a bonsai.Here, this bonsai pomegranate tree yields miniature fruit. The art of bonsai requires takingcontrol of the tree or plants shape. Wires are used to dwarf plants and trees, holdingbranches and trunks down. As long as the plant is alive, it will require periodic trimming,sculpting and maintenance.

Marion Lee Boudreau “Bud” 80 years old is now with his beautiful wifeBarbara in Heaven whom preceded Marion in death 8 months ago. On July 27,2015 Marion passed away at his home with no complications that we know of,he was found by a neighbor. Thank you.

Marion Lee Boudreau was born March 25, 1935 in Washington, Kansas toGeorge and Martha Marie (Williams) Boudreau which have preceded him indeath. Marion also had a younger brother Bobby Dean Boudreau whom preced-ed him in death.

He was a lifelong resident and friend of many in Manhattan, Kansas andsurrounding area. After attending Manhattan High School Marion went towork for Kansas Power and Light Company on April 27,1953 where served hislineman apprenticeship. He received the Presidents Medal once upon a time forsaving another lineman’s life, you see that was just who Bud was, you couldalways count on him. Marion worked for Kansas Power and Light until hisretirement in 1992 after 39 years of service.

Marion loved to do for others and kept busy helping many people up untilthe day that he died, Bud was found on the trailer that he used to hauled his oldmini excavator around doing small jobs for his friends.

Marion is survived by his daughter Christina “Chris” Claudio of Manhattan,Kansas and her children: Triston Washington, Tyler and Sara (Easton) Marionof Anchorage, Alaska, Travis Morningstar of Brooklyn, New York and TiffanyMorningstar of Savannah, Georgia.

Marion is also survived by his son Robert “Todd” and Teresa (Stafford)Boudreau of Land O Lakes, FL, and their three children: Brandon, Logan andMorgan Boudreau.

Marion and his jokes will be missed and his positive outlook on life. Healways said keep your head up high and keep marching forward, Dad also saiddon’t lose your sense of humor or you are done for.

I once had friend tell me (and he will know who he is when he reads this)You act like your dad is God or something, and I simply replied to the gentle-men, as far as I was concerned he had given a perfect description and thank youfor the compliment about Dad.

Dad I know that you are in a better place now, we wish that we could havesaid goodbye to you, Dad (Grandpa) we know that you will be with us all inspirit we love you and will miss you, give mom a kiss for all of us.

Memorial services for Mr. Boudreau will be held at 10:00 a.m. TuesdayAugust 4, 2015 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel, with the Rev.Ben Duerfeldt officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Sunrise Cemetery inManhattan.

Memorial contributions in memory of Bud are suggested to the Riley CountyAnimal Shelter or the Flint Hills Breadbasket. Contributions may be left in careof the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, 1616 Poyntz Avenue,Manhattan, Kansas 66502.
