An effort that began seven years ago onthe Hanna Road campus of Learning GateCommunity School, in Lutz, has morphedinto an event expected to draw thousandsto Tampa’s Lowry Park on April 23 in a festi-val that pays homage to protecting MotherEarth.

EcoFest is an annual event aimed at rais-ing awareness about the principles ofsustainability — ecology, equity and econo-my.

Learning Gate Community School, theUniversity of South Florida’s Patel College ofGlobal Sustainability and the City of Tampahave joined forces to present the festival,also dubbed as Earth Day Tampa Bay, nearthe park’s band shell at 7525 North Blvd., inTampa.

Michele Northrup, who has been eventcoordinator of EcoFest since its inception,has watched it grow and evolve.

There were 40 vendors and about 500 at-tendees at the first EcoFest, she said. Thisyear, there are 158 vendors, plus a waitinglist of 20. More than 4,000 people are ex-pected to attend.

Parking and admission are free, and thereare plenty of free activities, too, Northrupsaid.

There are plenty of opportunities tolearn and have fun, too, she said.

There will be live music, workshops, cos-tumed superheroes, demonstrations,informational booths, green living productsand services.

Local artists, green businesses, environ-mental organizations, alternative healthpractitioners, renewable energy specialists,and people from organic farms and gardenswill be there, too.

“We have some unique vendors. We’vegot some really cool artisans, craftsmen,”Northrup said.

Most of the vendors are local, comingfrom such communities as Tampa, NorthTampa, Wesley Chapel, Carrollwood andSouth Tampa.

Last year, the festival was set up deliber-ately to mimic a marketplace, and it’s goingto be set up the same way this year,Northrup said.

A new brunch restaurant is ex-pected to open this summer inLutz.

Bill Kranich and Janet Folsom,owners of Brunchies of Tampa, at14366 N. Dale Mabry Highway, areopening a second location of thepopular eatery, at 24400 State Road54 in Lutz.

Kranich hopes to open thebrunch spot by Aug. 1, adding thetiming depends on the completionof Pasco County’s building permitprocess.

The restaurant will replace thenow-closed Stage Left Bar & Kitchen, acrossthe street from Ferman Chrysler Jeep DodgeRam of Tampa.

Brunchies, which prides itself on “goodfood and good service,” will be open dailyfrom 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Catering services will

be available, too.With relatively sparse brunch op-

tions in Lutz, Kranich believes the areais an ideal fit for opening the eatery’ssecond location.

“One thing is, we live out there,”the restaurateur said. “There’s just up-side potential with all the growth, andplus, there’s a definite need for a reallyquality breakfast place up there.”

According to Kranich, the 3,500-square-foot restaurant will have about120 seats, smaller than the 190 seatsat the original Carrollwood-based lo-cation, which opened in 2004.However, the Lutz location will have apet-friendly patio, which expects toseat up to 30 patrons.

Cancellation of the Lutz Arts & CraftsFestival last December has resulted in a dipof $16,000 in the GFWC Lutz-Land O’ LakesWoman’s Club’s scholarship budget, com-pared to last year.

The club has a tradition of awardingscholarships to Lutz and Land O’ Lakes stu-dents.

But this year, it can only bestow two$1,000 scholarships, according to BarbaraNicholson, the club’s scholarship chair.

Last year, the club awarded 12 scholar-ships of $1,500 each.

The club would still like to add anotherscholarship or two, so it is seeking contribu-tions from local businesses and members ofthe community.

Through donations, Nicholson has al-ready raised about $600 to put toward athird $1,000 scholarship.

“I encourage any businesses to feel freeto donate to us,” Nicholson said. “We’re a5013c (nonprofit) organization, so anythingthat is donated is tax-deductible. It’s going tohelp the future of Lutz and Land O’ Lakes.”

“I haven’t discussed it with the othercommittee members, but...say we raised$800, I would ask the club for another $200

to bring it up to$1,000. That way, wecan give another$1,000 scholarship,”she said.

The woman’s clubscholarships are typi-cally awarded in lateAugust, and take intoaccount students’ fi-nancial needs, as wellas their grade point

averages and letters of recommendation.Nicholson had hoped the club would be

able to provide more scholarships this yearthan it did last year, but a sinkhole that devel-oped at Lake Park put a dent in those plans.

If not for a “banner year” from the club’sflea market in March, Nicholson acknowl-edged there might not have been enoughfunds for the two $1,000 scholarships.

The $1,000 scholarships are a separatedelineation from the club-administered LutzVolunteer Fireman’s Memorial ScholarshipFund, which is invested and used for stu-dents with Lutz addresses. Nicholson saidthe club will award two memorial scholar-ships for $5,000 apiece this year. Thewoman’s club took over the $260,000 en-dowed scholarship fund in 2014, after theLutz volunteer firehouse was decommis-

sioned and replaced by Hillsborough Countyfirefighters.

Nicholson notes “it’s not possible” totransfer money from the endowment fund tosupplement additional $1,000 scholarships.

Next year, the organization expects tomeet similar budget projections from 2015,especially with the arts & crafts festival’s lo-cation moving to Keystone Prep HighSchool in Odessa, starting this December.

“I would certainly hope to meet what wedid last year. I’d really like to see it increase,”the scholarship chairwoman said.

About one-half of previous festival ven-dors have already applied for the annualevent, according to Pat Serio, head of publicrelations for the women’s club. Serio addedthe new venue most likely will be able to ac-commodate additional vendor spacescompared to prior years at Lake Park.

Nicholson acknowledged there may be alearning curve for handling the logistics atthe new location, but ultimately will be ben-eficial for the festival’s future.

“I think there’ll probably be some confu-sion and traffic issues...this being the firstyear, but after that, everybody will becomeaccustomed to it, and there shouldn’t be anyissues,” Nicholson said.

“I understand that it’s going to be a veryfriendly site for the event.”

The holiday of Pesach, orPassover, is an eight-day festivalcelebrated in the early spring,from the 15th through the 22ndof the Hebrew month of Nissan.This year, it runs from April 22to April 30. It commemoratesthe emancipation of theIsraelites from slavery in ancientEgypt. Following the rituals ofPassover allows the Jewish com-munity to relive and experiencethe freedom of their ancestors.

OBSERVANCESPassover is divided into two

parts. The first two days, April 22and April 23, and the last twodays, April 29 and April 30, arefull-fledged holidays. Holidaycandles are lit at night, and holi-day meals (Seders) are enjoyedboth days. The middle four daysare referred to as chol hamoed,or semi-festive “intermediatedays.”

SEDERSThe highlight of Passover is

the Seder, which is observed oneach of the first two nights ofthe holiday. The Seder is a 15-step, family-oriented traditionand ritual-packed feast.

THE FOCAL POINTS OFTHE SEDER INCLUDE:• Eating matzah, which is un-

leavened bread• Eating bitter herbs to commemorate the

bitter slavery endured by the Israelites• Drinking four cups of wine or grape juice

to celebrate the newfound freedom• The recitation of the Haggadah, a liturgy

that describes the story of the Exodusfrom Egypt. The Haggadah is the fulfill-ment of the biblical obligation to recountthe story of the Exodus on the night ofPassover.

SYMBOLIC SEDER FOODS: • Maror: bitter herbs, usually horseradish,

to serve as a reminder of the bitterness ofslavery

• Saltwater: symbolizing the tears of theslaves

• Charoset: sweet paste made of fruit andnuts, symbolizing the mortar the slavesused to build the Egyptian pyramids

• Zeroah: shank bone, representing thePassover sacrifice

• Beitzah: hard-boiled egg, symbolic of lifeand birth associated with the spring sea-son

• Karpas: a leafy green vegetable, usuallya piece of lettuce, symbolizing hope

and redemption• Some traditional Ashkenazi Passover

dishes include: gefilte fish, matzah ballsoup, brisket, tzimmis (sweet carrot andfruit dish), and macaroons and spongecake (made from matzah meal) fordessert.

BIGGER MENU FOR PASSOVERIn December, the Conservative Jewish

movement’s Committee on Jewish Law and

Standards issued a ruling allowing the con-sumption of kitniyot (legumes) duringPassover. For thousands of years, AshkenaziJews have followed the tradition of not eat-ing kitniyot on Passover. (The custom wasnot adopted by most Sephardi Jews.)Kitniyot includes beans, corn, rice, millet,peas, soybeans, peanuts, sesame seeds,poppy seeds, mustard and sometimes garlic.

A pair of clouded leopardcubs born Feb. 29 at Tampa’sLowry Park Zoo are being in-troduced to the great outdoors.

The cubs, now more than 6-weeks-old, have reached a newstep in their development.

They’re getting a chance toexplore a grassy area, under thewatchful eye of the zoo’s careteam, according to a news re-lease from the zoo.

Zoo visitors also will have achance to get a peek at thetwo tiny female felines, “Aiya” and “Shigu.”

Exposing the cubs to different natural en-vironments provides essential sensoryenrichment for their continued develop-ment.

The zoo staff carefully manages the cubs’interaction and socialization to help buildtheir confidence.

Giving guests a chance to observe thecubs provides an opportunity to educate thepublic about the needs and perils of this rareand vulnerable species.

Aiya and Shigu are the first set of multi-ples for the zoo’s pair of 5-year-old adultleopards.

The cubs have received round-the-clockcare after their birth mother became anx-ious and stopped caring for them.

Within the managed population, cloudedleopard cubs are routinely hand-reared forthe best chance of survival. Hand-rearingalso improves socialization for early intro-ductions to potential mates and reduces fatalattacks by aggressive adults.

Within a few weeks, the zoo’s animal care

team will begin to transition the cubs to su-pervised independence by introducing themto an appropriate habitat within the zoo.

I often get calls from residents where I’masked to provide a list of “easy” plants.

The truth is, any plant is technically “easy”to grow once you understand its needs.

However, after attending a seminar by oneof my master gardeners, I was reminded ofthe beauty and simplicity of growing orchids.

I would highly recommend orchids as an“easy” plant.

Orchids are relatively pest free, and makebeautiful indoor and outdoor additions to anyhome. There are thousands of orchid speciesand more hybrids than one could count.Some orchids are terrestrial species, whichmeans they are ground dwellers. There areothers that don’t require soil and grow ontrees, and those type of plants are known asepiphytes.

Epiphytes are not parasites, as they onlyuse the tree as a structural support.

There are three categories of epiphytesthat I find most interesting and “easy.” TheVanda orchids produce bloom spikes capableof lasting three weeks or more. The flowercolors vary from browns and greens to pink,blue, purple, white and even black or gold.You would most readily recognize these or-chid flowers in the welcoming leis of Hawaiiamong other orchid species.

The Cattleyas are probably the most wide-ly grown, and are very popular due to theirshowy flowers and long life. Flower colorsrange through the basic colors, except forblue, and can be found in striking bold huesto almost pastel shades. There are single anddouble blooms, and some even have a light,airy fragrance that won’t overwhelm thesenses. There are Cattleyas that produce up to20 flowers that are 3-inches wide, while oth-ers put on a dramatic show with 7-inchflowers clustered into groups of four or five.

Cattleyas usually only flower once a year— in the spring or fall — and their flowersgenerally last up to six weeks depending onthe species and cultivar.

The third type of epiphytic orchid that Iconsider “easy” would be the Phaleanopsis, or“moth” orchids. These are great for beginnersas they can endure even the brownestthumb. These orchids produce a long arching“spray” of 10 flowers to 20 flowers anywherefrom 3-inches to 4-inches in diameter.Beautiful pinks, yellows, oranges, whites andthose with pops of intermingled colors arecommon.

When in full bloom, these resemble mothsfluttering en masse and can be quite stun-ning. These orchids normally bloom for up toone month in winter or early spring, but withoptimal pruning and growing conditions,they can be induced to flower continuously.

Caring for orchids is quite easy. Key tenetsof orchid care involve: temperature, light, nu-trition, moisture and air movement.

A simple fertilizer for orchids, like 18-18-18 or 20-20-20, and fish emulsion applied tothe roots will be plenty in terms of nutrition.Simply dilute the fertilizer into the water sys-tem you use to maintain moisture.

The amount of moisture varies slightly foreach type of orchid, based on where it’s locat-ed. An orchid that gets more light thananother might require more water, or whenthe temperatures decrease, moisture require-ments might drop.

Keep an eye on the roots. Orchid rootsshould be slightly green – a light green andplump. When orchids need water, the rootstend to become gray and dull, and even with-er slightly. That’s a sure sign they needmoisture. A spray bottle will do nicely, as willa gentle drink from a hose. Direct the waterright onto the roots (to avoid leaf spots) andsoak Vanda roots daily in summer and everyother day in winter. Water your orchids earlyin the day to allow the extra moisture toevaporate and discourage fungal growth.

Cattleyas are a bit more tolerant of drierconditions and can be watered two to threetimes per week – just keep an eye on theroots for stress to know when supplementalmoisture might be needed.

For the Phaleanopsis orchid species, water

them weekly – maybe twice per week. Theseorchids like to be moist, but not wet.

When it comes to light, most of the orchidtypes mentioned in this article like 50 per-cent to 70 percent shade, so screenedporches work nicely.

For the Vandas, a bit more light is best, sothat they receive 40 percent to 50 percentshade.

As for temperature, never let your Vandaorchids get below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, as itmight be fatal. For the Cattleyas andPhaleanopis varieties, temperatures down to40 degrees Fahrenheit or 50 degreesFahrenheit for short periods will not beharmful.

A freeze warning might prompt some pro-tection for exposed orchids, but otherwisethese are quite hardy.

Another key to growing orchids is to pro-mote air movement around the roots. Evenorchids living in pots need course texturedgrowth media, like pine bark (orchid pottingmix) to allow for plenty of oxygen to reachthe roots.

Hanging orchid baskets are a beautifulway to display orchids while allowing theroots to be exposed to the air.

As long as orchids have course texturedgrowing media (bark, not potting soil), mostwill thrive.

Once the mix has broken down into fineparticles, it’s time to repot the orchid into acourser mix. There’s really no right or wrongpot for an orchid — as long as the roots haveair, moisture and nutrients, and the leaveshave the right amount of light.

The only precaution I might offer aboutgrowing orchids is to be sure you’ve got plen-ty of space.

Orchids are enchanting and addictive, notto mention “easy” to grow.

Land O’ Lakes High School junior LanceMcCabe Sargent admits that if you watchedhim throw two years ago, you’d never expecthim to be one of Tampa’s top prep pitchers.

“I didn’t have the best mechanics,” saidSargent, who doubles as the Gators’ startingthird baseman. “When I’d go in from third(base) to pitch, I’d be all around the place,just kind of poor mechanics. I’d just go onthe mound and throw because I had a prettydecent arm, so I’d just sling it.”

Through 43 innings, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound right-hander boasts a miniscule 0.49ERA — the best mark in Pasco County —making him one of the area’s toughest pitch-ers to face.

Though he’s always had a powerful arm,the Land O’ Lakes coaching staff wasn’t quitesure they had a pitching gem on their hands,until the start of the season.

“Their first words to me were, ‘Whyhaven’t you told me you could pitch before?Why haven’t you asked me to throw in thebullpen?’” said Sargent, who’s in his first yearpitching on the varsity level after throwingextensively in summer travel ball.

“We had an idea he was a pitcher, but hedidn’t pitch at all last year,” said Land O’ Lakeshead coach Jeff May. “We didn’t know howgood of a pitcher he was going to be — wejust knew that he had a very good arm. Hewas a little wild when he first came up withus, but...as he’s gotten bigger and stronger,he’s been throwing harder, and it kind ofdawned on us, ‘Hey, let’s give him a shot,’ andhe’s performed really well.”

Sargent’s path to success this year beganin the offseason and over the summer. Heworked extensively with Tampa-based pitch-ing instructor Anthony Telford, a former MLBmiddle reliever who spent parts of 10 sea-sons playing for the Baltimore Orioles,Montreal Expos and Texas Rangers through-

out the ’90s and early ’00s.Telford focused on improving Sargent’s

pitching motion and follow-through, whichhas allowed the Land O’ Lakes standout to in-crease his fastball velocity from 82 mph to89 mph, paving the way for a dominatingjunior season.

Once his senior year rolls around, Telfordwouldn’t be surprised to see Sargent’s fast-ball velocity increase even further, perhapsreaching the low-to-mid 90s.

“He’s certainly strong enough,” Telfordsaid. His arm action works real well — he hasthe athletic ability. What we focused on most-ly with McCabe was just the mechanics…. oftrying to get him to be able to throw the ballin the strike zone consistently.

“There’s a lot more development. He’s gotthe physical ability, and the thing that hedoes the best is he loves to compete,” Telfordadded.

In addition to a blazing fastball, Sargent isequipped with a curveball, slider and change-up — which he uses to keep opposinghitters off-balance.

“On the lower part of the lineup, I throwmore changeups just to not waste the curve-ball,” said Sargent, who models his game afterNew York Mets all-star pitcher JacobdeGrom. “In the 3, 4 and 5 hole, I’ll mix in acurveball, because they’re a little bit betterhitters.”

The difference in pitch speed betweenhis “violent” fastball and changeup has al-lowed Sargent to be virtually unhittable, androll through opposing lineups with ease inthe process.

“When you throw harder, it’s going tomake your off-speed pitches that much bet-ter, and he’s got a very good off-speed pitch,too,” his varsity coach said. “It’s a good one-two punch.”

“He’s got a natural ability that you can’tteach a lot of guys, which when you’re acoach, you’re immediately drawn to it,” Mayadded. “He’s in the learning curve right nowof becoming a good pitcher; he’s got thetools, and he’s (still) learning the game ofpitching, too.”

Sargent’s current stats and high ceilinghave already caught the eyes of several majorDivision I collegiate baseball programs, in-cluding the University of Central Florida,Florida Gulf Coast University, Alabama A&M,Stetson University, Radford (Virginia)University and High Point (North Carolina)University.

As he manages the extra attention — get-ting inundated with phone calls andmessages from college coaches — Sargent istrying to stay focused on the task at hand:leading Land O’ Lakes (20-3) through a deepplayoff run.

Beyond that, the right-hander has a moreambitious long-term goal in mind.

“My main goal has always been to play inthe big leagues,” he said. “Since I was a littlekid, that’s what I grew up wanting to do.”

Despite wrapping up a marvelous regu-lar season (24-2-1), the third-year coach istrying not to get ahead of himself in lookingat the pathway to a state title, though heknows his team matches up well againstmost opponents.

The Gators are rolling into the playoffsas one of the state’s hottest teams—reelingoff 15 straight wins, many by large marginsof victory.

“I think we’re set,” the third-year coachsaid. “I have in my mind how I want to ap-proach as we go through regionals.”

To win the Class 6A FHSAA (Florida HighSchool Athletic Association) state title, theGators will have to win five straight gamesin the process, starting on April 20.

But, Wilkins is careful not to look too farahead.

“I can’t be distracted by that, because weknow what happened last year—we lost inthe second round at the districts semifinalsand didn’t get to go any further — so wehave to look at each game and figure outwhat’s the best approach for that game be-fore we start looking at a statechampionship.”

After finishing 24-3 last season—districtsemifinals’ hiccup aside— Wilkins knew hehad an established team with lofty expecta-tions entering the 2016 season.

“We knew we had good players, but wewanted to see how they matched up — andso far so good,” Wilkins said. “We’re reallyhappy with what we have, not only onethrough nine, but we’ve got weapons onthe bench that I can put in and feel just ascomfortable having play.”

One player that Wilkins is always com-fortable playing is senior ace pitcherShannon Saile (four no-hitters, 0.66 ERA),who’s struck out 221 batters —which ranksfifth in the state. Her ability to throw all herpitches—fastball, curveball, screwball, rise-ball— in each quadrant of the strike zonehas made the FIU (Florida InternationalUniversity) softball commit a nightmare foropposing hitters.

“She’s been a monster,” her coach said.“She hits both sides of the plate. …She lovesto pitch at the bottom of the strike zone.

“She gets a lot of swinging strikes—pitch-es out of the zone—because the (opposing)girls know they have to be ready and swingearly, because she throws so hard.”

Averaging more than two strikeouts forevery inning pitched, Saile’s presence in thecircle has taken a significant burden off ofthe team’s defense, Wilkins said.

“Defensively, when I only have to ac-count for one out an inning — that is such ablessing,” the Gators coach said. “That takesa lot of stress off our defense. The moststressful thing they have is waiting to see ifsomebody’s going to hit the ball and put itin play. …They have to stay on the balls oftheir feet the whole time, if somebody doeshit it.”

Giving the Gators additional assuranceheading into the postseason is the emer-gence of several young players, includingtwo-way freshmen Callie Turner and ShelbyWestbrook, and sophomores BriannaLindner, Ashley Smith and Tia Williams.

“We have a good mixture of youth andveterans,” Wilkins said, noting eight of theteam’s 14 players will earn their first varsity

letter. “This year, we are better pitching, butwe haven’t hit quite as well as we did lastyear—but we haven’t needed to. In thesame respect, we’ve played better competi-tion this year.”

That “better competition” includesSpringstead (24-1)— a team the Gators fellto 1-0 in extra innings in the season open-er—whom Land O’ Lakes may rematch ifboth teams reach the regional finals.

“We know they’ve made some improve-ments since then, and we’ve made someimprovements since then, so it’ll probably bea little bit different game,” Wilkins said, adding,“we’re confident we can play with them.”

“We feel — especially with Shannonpitching and our defense, and the emergingoffense from our sophomore starters — thatwe can compete with anybody in the state.”

2016 Pasco Economic DevelopmentCouncil Industry of the Year Awards is April29.

Winners will be announced at the 30thannual Appreciation Banquet in September.

The awards recognize top companies inPasco County that excel in technology, inno-vation, job creation, growth, capitalinvestment and community involvement.

Nominees should be service, manufactur-ing or technology companies operating inPasco County. Award categories are manu-facturing, service/distribution, technologyand nonprofits/others.

The awards will be separated into divi-sions based on number of employees.Evaluations are based on job creation, in-creased capital investment, andcontributions to the community throughcivic involvement between January 2015and June 2016.

Each year, more than 600 business andcommunity leaders in Tampa Bay and PascoCounty, attend the awards banquet, includ-ing state legislators, county commissionersand city officials.
