NEWSLETTER PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE - January 2020

Happy New Year! I want to thank all of you who have put your support in me to guide our club for the year 2020. I hope the privilege and responsibilities you have bestowed on me will allow us to move our club forward in the lapidary arts. I can’t do this alone though. Thankfully, I have each of you to help with that whether you are an instructor, board/committee member, or a volunteer. So I invite each of you to try a new class this year, work towards independent certification, team up with a fellow member of a joint project, work on a committee, offer a skill for the club, or become an instructor.

On making a plan

Our annual trade show is rapidly approaching and I would like to give you some advice on volunteering for it. I have worked the show for two years now from Friday at 9 am until Sunday when the truck is unloaded back at the clubhouse. When you want to spend time doing something like this, plan ahead. Two years ago, all I did was hospitality and I needed more work to do at that show. Last year, I waited to see what needed to be done each day when I got there. It was stressful and I spent too much time trying to find something to do.

The lesson is to pick your slots and plan your own schedule ahead of the show. This way you know when and where to be. Don’t worry about anyone else and just stick to your own schedule. Take into consideration some break times between your slots as well. Commit early so you get to do the type of volunteering that you want to do. Taking this approach allows the manager of each area to have a less stressful job managing the check-in area as well.

Remember, the next time you take a class please check the signup sheets and reserve your slots.

- Scott

COPS Report COPS will be at the St. Johns County Boy Scout University on Saturday, January 25th, from 8 AM to 2 PM. Located in the Bartram High School. St. Johns County. This is an annual event where various presenters are invited to share their material with the boy scouts and the leaders. It is an all-day event with approximately 500 Boy Scouts in attendance.

The second COPS event will be with the Duval County Secondary School Science Fair on Thursday, January 30th. This event is located at UNF Campus Auditorium. The event runs from 9 AM to 2 PM. Children are bussed in for this event with about 25 presenters present. It is a time of discovery for many of the children because they never get to see any hands-on displays. Lots of questions and big smiles.

There are several COPS classroom events coming up in the next few months. If you are interested in attending and helping out, please let me know.

Attention all Faceters! We need you! Time is short before the March Show!

We are planning our display box to show off our talents and the beautiful stones we facet at JGMS. Our display will be “The Shapes We Make”.

There are over 45 different shapes that can be cut and we need a good assortment. Please sign up for as many shapes as possible on the sheet on the faceting room cabinet. You may already have different shapes to enter. If you need patterns, check out our shop pattern books, or go to http://

Let’s have another fantastic faceting display with “The Shapes We Make!”

From your newsletter editor:

Hi everybody! My name is Caroline Schultz. The awesome Anne Lanier has passed the torch to me, and I will be taking over the newsletter duties in 2020! I have some ideas about articles I would like to start including in the newsletter, some of which include a “show and tell” area, as well as a “used equipment - buy/sell/trade” section where members can list items they’d like to pass on to a new home, or a request for something special they would like to add to their workbench. Let’s get connected! I’d love to hear from you about what you might like to see in the newsletter. You can email me at [email protected]. I’m always looking for articles to include, so please send in your writing. And no worries if you don’t feel like an experienced writer…I have a lot of journalism experience, and can edit your work if you’d like. Please send in pictures and a short description of something you’d like to share in Show and Tell. Tell me about your favorite class. Send in pictures and a write-up from a rockhounding trip. The sky’s the limit!

A little bit about me: I’m new-ish to JGMS, I joined in January 2019. I love rocks, and I was so excited to find out that a club like ours exists in my new city. I’ve enjoyed learning silversmithing and cabbing, and my first class ever at the club was wax casting with Jason Hamilton. But most of all, I’ve loved meeting so many friendly, fantastic people and making new friends! I‘m a relatively new transplant from Gainesville, having moved to the beach in late 2018. I am an acupuncturist in private practice in Jax Beach, and I’m currently working on my doctorate in my spare time (haha). I’m also putting together a beginner’s silversmithing workbench in my garage, so if you have any tips you’d like to share, or equipment you want to sell - please let me know! Until next month, be well and keep on “rockin’ out” :)
