O ur New England Region Ferrari Club events have been frequent, fun, and very well-attended. One year ago Ferrari North

America (FNA) President/CEO Edwin Fenech met with us at our Annual Meeting.

His visit was unprecedented in the history of the Ferrari Club of America (FCA), and has led to a warm relationship between FNA and the FCA. The affability was apparent at the Ferrari Challenge Races at LRP in September. Hundreds of members came from all areas of the northeast, filled Lime Rock’s paddock with street and vintage Ferraris, and watched the 458 Challenge cars have at it on the track. By all accounts the event was a great success.

This year we have also had a multitude of drives, meals, weekend getaways, track events, karting, tours, and special events held by our two terrific Ferrari dealers; Miller Motorcars and Ferrari of New England. And we have plenty of events in the works for 2017, so be sure to check the calendar and your email for updates.

Finally, thank you to our enthusiastic Ferrari Club members, and to the excellent team of volunteers who make up the New England Ferrari Club Board. This is a great team. Let them, or me know how if you have ideas for the Club.

W hen second-generation philanthropist Michael A. Bozzuto first conceived of a charity motorcycle ride 16 years ago, his immediate goal was to raise funds for the Special Olympics, a charity his parents also

supported. More than a decade later, his fundraising vision became a place where Special Olympics athletes are escorted in fancy cars to a red-carpet event, invited to play in a Unified Basketball Game with NBA players, and most importantly, to become part of a community where they are loved, included, and celebrated for their abilities.

For more than 200 Special Olympics athletes, from 17 states and three countries, and more than 10,000 attendees in Farmington, CT in 2016, this event is much more than the $1.5 million raised for Special Olympics, it’s about personal breakthroughs, building friendships, and taking away a cherished memory of a lifetime. Not to mention, there were tons of really cool cars, motorcycles, and adoptable dogs found all over the Farmington Polo Club in a multitude of events on August 26-28th, 2016.

DREAM RIDE BY THE NUMBERS

This year’s event, powered by The Hometown Foundation, Inc., featured the Dream Ride motorcycle rally with thousands of motorcycles, from 25 satellite locations along the Eastern seaboard traveling to Connecticut. The Dream Show featured more than 400 exotic, vintage, and classic cars and motorcycles in a Judged Car Show and Judged Motorcycle Show. The Dream Cruise saw more than 200 classic and exotic cars taking Special Olympics athletes on an 8-mile police-escorted cruise through the Farmington Valley, culminating with a red-carpet arrival.

The Family Fun Zone created a community of rides, carnival games, monster truck rides, vendors, K-9 demonstrations, face painters, balloon artists, and more. The Family Fun Zone brought even more smiles and giggles for family members of all ages. The dog adoption area featured

rescue organizations which led to approximately 30 dogs being adopted over the weekend. And the inaugural Firemen Chili Cook-Off had local fire departments competing for bragging rights as they vied for top awards. The competition heated up as expert judges and a select few Special Olympics athletes sampled the chili, debated over the recipes, and selected the winners. Congratulations to the Hartford, Burlington, and Newington fire departments on receiving top honors.

CRUISING IN STYLE WITH A SMILE The conversation flowed easily as Bobby Osborne, Special Olympics Connecticut athlete, walked alongside John Gentile toward a classic car. The pair were partners for Dream Cruise, a highly-anticipated Dream Ride Experience event.

“I can’t believe it,” said Osborne, a Special Olympics athlete from Manchester, Conn. “I am riding in a 1957 Chevy, and I’m 58. How’s the engine?”

“Good,” replied Gentile, the car’s owner. “You’re going to love it.”

As Gentile spoke of his involvement with The Dream Ride Experience and the satisfaction he feels when making others happy, Osborne greeted several friends before pausing to explain why he kept stopping to say hello. “Everybody knows me,” Osborne said. “I’m the mayor of Special Olympics.”

Nearby Christian Kosovic, 12, sat comfortably in the passenger’s seat of Sal Laudano Jr.’s 1983 Ferrari Mondial Cabriolet patiently waiting for his ride. “It’s exciting, and I enjoy it,” said Laudano. “These kids’ smiles, they enjoy the ride.”

Phil Fiore had similar thoughts as he prepared his 2015 Lamborghini Aventador Roadster for Dream Cruise. In an effort to publicize the event, Fiore’s sporty car was decorated in Dream Ride decals. “I love


the smiles,” Fiore said. “This is what these cars are made for.”

As the long line of shiny, colorful cars began to move forward, horns sounded and engines revved. Spectators gathered to watch the procession, and they cheered and waved until the last car rounded the corner. They then hurried to the spot where they would welcome the Special Olympics athletes as they returned from their cruise. Each athlete ducked under a balloon archway and walked the red carpet ad they exited their vehicle. “It just warms your heart to take these kids and make their day,” said Cindy Wernicki, the owner of a 2015 Ferrari California T.

This Special Olympics fundraiser will feature the popular motorcycle rally, car cruise, car and motorcycle show, Florida to Connecticut motorcycle rally, and other fun activities for the whole family. The Hometown Foundation, Inc., is a 501 (c) 3 charitable foundation dedicated to supporting the community in conjunction with Bozzuto’s Inc. and

its IGA retailers. Founded in 2002, the Foundation supports six core community needs: military, children in need, intellectual disabilities, life threatening illness, emergency response personnel, and animal welfare. Through its signature event, The Dream Ride Experience, the Foundation has raised more than $6.2 million for Special Olympics and other charities as well as donated police K-9s to area law enforcement agencies.

The Ferrari Challenge Series returned to Lime Rock Park September 2016 after a four year hiatus from the historic CT track. The FIA approved series was established in 1993 and began with the Ferrari 348 Challenge Race Cars. The 348C evolved to the 355 Challenge

Car, the 360 Challenge, the 430 Challenge, and the series now runs with the V8 Ferrari 458 Challenge EVOs fitted with the latest aerodynamic kit. In 2017 the 458 Challenge EVOs will split the Series with the new Ferrari 488 Challenge Cars.

There are three Ferrari Challenge Series; in Europe, North America, and Asia-Pacific. There are four categories for each race: Trofeo Pirelli, Trofeo Pirelli Am and Coppa Shell, plus an optional category as necessary (over 55 and Ladies Cup). The World Finals - Finali Mondiali - will be at Daytona in December 2016. Ferrari dealers support the drivers; in attendance at LRP was our own Miller Motorcars, Ferrari of Central FL/Tampa, Ferrari of Ft. Lauderdale, Ferrari of Vancouver, Ferrari of San Francisco, Ferrari of Ontario, Ferrari of Beverly Hills, Ferrari of Washington, and Ferrari of Long Island.

FERRARICHALLENGE SERIES AT LIME ROCK PARK


Lime Rock Park, as you know, is the Northeast’s historic 1.5-mile 7-turn racing circuit. Renowned for the high speeds seen along the Sam Posey and No Name Straight, there is no racing activity allowed on Sundays, thus a shortened weekend for Ferrari. Ferrari North America (NA) closed their corporate office on Friday and held a company appreciation day at LRP led by President and CEO Edwin Fenech. Ferrari NA also had a Hospitality tent (and spa), cocktail party, and track drives for their customers on Friday and Saturday.

Vintage to modern to Supercars were on display in the paddock. In the vintage corral an eclectic field included a 1950 166 Vignale Coupe AND a 166 MM Barchetta, a 1964 500 Superfast AND a Superamerica, Ferrari 250’s, 330’s, 365’s, 275’s, 308’s and a 1989 Testarossa. New cars included the 488 GTB and 488 Spider, the F12tdf unveiled last August in Monterey, and the stunning Ferrari LaFerrari supercar. The People’s Choice Award in the vintage corral went to the 1957 Ferrari 335 Sport.

The Ferrari parking corral was a sea of street Ferraris owned by regional New England, Empire and Penn-Jersey Ferrari Club members in attendance for the Challenge races. The Dream Ride Foundation that supports and fundraises for Special Olympics brought their beautiful Ferrari haulers and exhibit of Ferrari Supercars. Always generous and inclusive in car activities, the Dream Ride team invited local Athletes from Special Olympics to enjoy the event.


Maine Chapter President Glenn Farrell hosted yet another wonderful weekend ‘down in Maine’, this year

in the enchanting town of Camden. A bit of wet weather did not deter us hardy New Englanders from driving, dining, and touring the busy town. We also visited the unique Owls Head Transportation Museum which operates a collection of vintage aircraft, ground vehicles and engines. We had a great group of people, cars, awesome driving, only one unpaved road (insert Maine witticism here), too much food (insert Dennis witticism here), and scenic fall beauty at its finest. Next year; York. Can’t wait!

FCA CONNECTICUT CHAPTER GOES TO ITALY!

Well, not quite. But when sitting in the warm sun with good friends, surrounded by beautiful Italian cars, served exquisite Italian food and beverages, with Italian music in the background...it was not difficult to imagine that we were in Italy!

Fall had well and truly arrived in New England, but Sunday October 17th was unseasonably warm and sunny enabling many FCA-NER members to sit outside the Viron Rondo Osteria Italian restaurant in Cheshire, CT. A special thanks to Gerri and Steve Bonnell for recommending this restaurant. The drive to Cheshire was spectacular as Mother Nature was performing her annual foliage color transition. There was dedicated parking for the diverse range of Italian thoroughbreds that arrived; 458, 599, 308, Mondial, 550 and even some exotics without a cavallino rampante on the hood.

A truly great time was had by all, especially the ice-breaker kicked off by Mike Odierna, CT Chapter President, involving all of us sharing funny stories about exotic car ownership. The stories were hysterical, but moreover it enabled us to get to know each other even better.
