Hello, my name is Rebekah Cutter and this is my application for the
Postgraduate Search Bursary!
I have recently graduated from the University of Bradford, division of Peace Studies, with a First Class Honours degree.
In September 2014 I will continue my studies by working towards a Masters of Arts in ‘Peace, Conflict and Development Studies’.
Why? Well the answer can be summed up into one
sentence. I am incredibly passionate about human
rights. But lets expand on that…
I have been a member of
University of Bradford
Union Amnesty
International for three
years. In my second year I
was elected an executive
member, holding the
position of ‘Secretary
Treasurer’, which I still
hold to this day.
I have helped lead the society on numerous campaigns
including;
In partnership with the
President of the society at
that time, I co-hosted a
workshop surrounding
women’s rights. Focusing on
case studies of women in
Afghanistan.
I have help host a week long film festival, free to all members of the community to raise awareness of international human rights issues surrounding; education, LGBT and the death penalty. Due to the success of the film festival, we repeated the event the following year.
I have helped host two live music fundraisers,
‘Jamnesty’ , raising money for both the organisation
and society of Amnesty International. Together these
events helped raise over £1500 and were deemed a
huge success!
Outside of Amnesty International I have also been
involved with ‘Peace Jam 2014’ and the 40th
Anniversary of Peace Studies Conference.
I was born with a mild form of Spina Bifida. I have
overcame many of the difficulties my disability
presents to achieve many things I have put my mind
to. This inspired me to gain first hand experience of
helping other people with disabilities and support
them living independently within the Bradford
community. I have done this by gaining employment
at Supported Lives where I have been working for
three years so far…
It is my goal to work in developing and writing policy
surrounding human rights pertaining to those with
disabilities.
The course has two specific modules which focus on
analysing existing policy's relating to development,
which will be of great benefit.
I plan to help and support many people throughout my
personal and professional life. Although this bursary
would be extremely beneficial to me, long term it affect
many other peoples lives in a positive way!
