PASTOR’S LETTER
Dear Parishioners,
I would like to share with you a recent article I wrote for the Focus on Faith Column for The Wakefield Daily Item.
The pandemic continues. We are in a constant holding pattern of sheltering in place and social distancing. I wish to share with you that I have some bad news and I have some good news. First, I will share the bad news. During this pandemic, many have died, many have lost their jobs, and schools remain closed. Graduates cannot hold their usual celebrations as graduations are postponed. Churches cannot host their parishioners. We see more suicides and an increase in domestic violence. Elective surgical procedures are delayed, and we see more restrictions on our freedoms. These problems are just what we see on the surface. There are other side effects and issues from this pandemic that are not yet visible. Only time will tell.
What about the good news? Well, despite the many things that we’ve lost, we have three important things that remain. They are God, family, and friends. God is the most important for He is the source of all life. He is our creator and redeemer. He is the living God that we worship and adore. He became man to teach us the path that will lead us to heaven. He paid the price for our salvation and overcame the powers of sin and death. Some say that the Lord allowed the pandemic to be a wake-up call. That bears the question, “Have we fallen asleep in our faith?” We see that many have turned to false gods to be the center and foundation of their lives. Things such as sports, entertainment, and material possessions have become all-encompassing. Instead of following the ways of Jesus, many now follow the ways of the world. We see God’s commandments broken in numerous ways as His role in man’s life becomes smaller. This pandemic might be a time for all of us to renew our personal relationship with God, which is, after all, the purpose of our existence. The second important thing is family. Due to the stay at home order, we are now spending more time with our families. Life is normally so hectic. Before the pandemic, we were overwhelmed with a myriad of activities and responsibilities that forced many families apart. How many families do not even have the time to eat together or spend time enjoying leisure activities together? Now, being asked to stay in our homes has brought many of us together to become reacquainted. Our society is only as strong as its families. Many social disorders are the result of broken homes. This time we spend together can be healing for us to grow stronger as a family unit. The third important thing is that of having friends. Our friends are those that support us, encourage us, and love us in many ways. Our journey in life is made (continued…)

more pleasant with friends. Under normal circumstances, we go out to eat, to take in a movie, or to attend a sporting event with our friends. Friends help us to get through the good times and the bad. How many of us have reached out to friends at this time to overcome loneliness and sadness? Sharing with friends will help us get through this time together. Let us remember that the Lord is with us. He is our shepherd, and as our shepherd, He is responsible for taking care of us. Let us not wander away from the flock and put ourselves outside of His provision and protection. Each day we receive our daily allowance, all that we need. We place our trust in Him.
I will be available for confession this week on Saturday, May 16, from 3:00 p.m. - 3:45 p.m. in the chapel or by appointment. May Jesus continue to shepherd you in all of your needs. God love you,
Message of Our Lady of Akita I wish to share with you an extraordinary event known as “Our Lady of Akita.” In 1973, Sister Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa from Akita, Japan, experienced three apparitions from the Blessed Mother. Along with the messages, there were healings and other miracles. The local bishop approved the messages recognizing them as authentic. The last message Sr. Agnes received seems particularly relevant today.
My dear daughter, listen well to what I have to say to you...As I told you, if men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge, such as one will never have seen before. Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity...the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful. The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead... Each day recite the prayer of the Rosary. With the Rosary pray for the Pope, bishops and the priests. The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, and bishops against other bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres...churches and altars sacked; the Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord. The demon will be especially implacable against souls consecrated to God. The thought of the loss of so many souls is the cause of my sadness. If sins increase in number and gravity, there will be no longer pardon for them.
This message is a reminder that we must be ever vigilant in our spiritual life. Let us go to Mary, our mother, who loves us and protects us. Let us pray the Rosary as a family. It is the greatest weapon against evil.

PARISH NEWS
A Tribute to Christian Mothers
You may have heard about the little boy who presented his mother with an itemized bill. He had carefully written down all the things he did around the house and listed an amount after each thing.
Mowing the Grass $5 Making my bed all week $1 Going to the store $.50 Taking out the trash $1 Good grades on report card $5
And so on. The mother took the bill, looked at it, and didn’t say a word. The next morning the boy found the bill on his plate with the money he requested, but he noticed that his mother had written something on the back of it. He read down her list:
For the nine months, I carried you No Charge The nights I sat up with you No Charge Doctoring you when you were sick No Charge Praying for you No Charge Tears I’ve cried for You No Charge Toys, food, clothes No Charge All my love for you No Charge
The little boy returned the money and the bill to his mother. When she looked at it, she saw He had written across his itemized list PAID IN FULL.
The love of a mother is wonderful, especially a Christian mother. They take care of all our needs, including the most important need of telling us of Jesus, teaching us to love and follow Him. Christian mothers give us a picture of God’s love for us, how freely He gives us everything, all the while we try to make demands of Him. The sacrifice He was willing to make for us was profound. He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all–how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things? (Romans 8:32) God’s love provides for our needs constantly, all at no charge to us.
I pay tribute to Christians mothers, those who have made it their priority to live out their Christian calling in their homes. That is the kind of mother I was blessed with. I know there were times that she and I didn’t get along too well. Isn’t it funny, though, that I can’t remember why? What I do remember is that she is the one who took care of me. She was the one who made sure I got out of bed and had breakfast before I went to school. She was the one who sat up late to make sure I got home safely. She knew the pain of childbearing did not stop with labor and delivery. She was the one who prayed with me and for me. I thank God for that.
A good mother deserves honor, whether it is the mother who bore you or the mother who bore your children. Mothers model for us the love that God has shown to us. As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; [says the LORD] (Isaiah 66:13) That is what God has done: He has comforted us, loved us tenderly, given of Himself for our sakes. He saw us in our need, our corruption, the depravity of our sins, and He reached out to us. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. His death satisfied God’s demand that payment be made for sin. His rising assures you that death has been defeated. This has all been given to you at no charge, out of love.
Many of you first heard this good news from your mother, and she raised you to believe this, even as she did. Happy Mother’s Day.

PRAYER Intentions
Your prayers are requested for the deceased of our community and all of our parish benefactors, our sick, our military, especially our parishioners who are currently deployed to an active combat area and all those who have asked us to pray for them this week. Their names have been inscribed in our parish Book of Intentions in the Chapel. Please contact the rectory to add a name.
Reflection of the Week
You yourself, as much as anyone in the entire universe,
deserve your love and affection.
Fully Known “You shouldn’t be here right now. Someone up there was looking out for you,” the tow truck driver told my mother after he had pulled her car from the edge of a steep mountain ravine and studied the tire tracks leading up to the wreck. Mom was pregnant with me at the time. As I grew, she often recounted the story of how God saved both our lives that day, and she assured me that God valued me even before I was born. None of us escape our omniscient (all-knowing) Creator’s notice. More than 2,500 years ago He told the prophet Jeremiah, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you” (Jeremiah 1:5). God knows us more intimately than any person ever could and is able to give our lives purpose and meaning unlike any other. He not only formed us through His wisdom and power, but He also sustains every moment of our existence—including the personal details that occur every moment without our awareness: from the beating of our hearts to the intricate functioning of our brains. Reflecting on how our heavenly Father holds together every aspect of our existence, David exclaimed, “How precious to me are your thoughts, God!” (Psalm 139:17). God is closer to us than our last breath. He made us, knows us, and loves us, and He’s ever worthy of our worship and praise.

Could you benefit from Franciscan Spiritual Direction?
Franciscan Spiritual Direction invites all disciples to navigate a uniquely sacred path, guided by the Holy Spirit. We discern “what am I feeling; what am I learning; where is God? Am I growing; will He transform me to His purpose?” The invitation seeks to share the challenges, as well as the joys, of living. There is much to learn from an innocent man who died on a cross, yet never stops loving us. What is happening in your heart and mind? What do you want God to hear, and what is He asking of you? Kate Chandler has a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry and is certified in Franciscan Spiritual Direction. During this time, Kate is available remotely to listen and offer insight into various ways to pray for restoration of joy and peace in our everyday lives.

Laughter, THE BEST MEDICINE
God's Email
One day God was looking down at Earth and saw all of the evil that was going on. He decided to send an angel down to Earth to check it out.
So he called one of his best angels and sent the angel to Earth for a while.
When she returned she told God, yes it is bad on Earth, 95% is bad and 5% is good. Well, he thought for a moment and thought maybe he'd better send down a second angel to get another point of view.
So God called another angel and sent him to Earth for a time too.
When the angel returned he went to God and told him "Yes, the Earth is in decline. 95% is bad and 5% is good."
God said this was not good.
So he decided to send e-mail to the 5% that were good. He wanted to encourage them, give them a little something to help them keep going. . Do you know what that e-mail said?
Oh, you didn't get one either, huh? Bummer.

Saint Joseph School News The learning must go on!
Saint Joseph School is currently enrolling for the 2020/2021
school year
Saint Joseph School’s 4th and 5th grade classes will tell you that despite school being physically closed, they haven’t missed a single school day. Mr. Stackhouse and Mrs. Chiodini, who teach different subjects to the two grades, have taken on the ambitious task of recreating school completely online. The students from both grades have Zoom meetings with their teachers everyday. Mr. Stackhouse lectures on his subjects and goes over work during Zoom meetings. Students have also completed at-home science projects for him. Mrs. Chiodini has integrated teaching, learning and technology in some truly impressive ways. She lectures and teaches on Zoom, then the students submit assignments in Google Classroom and also a website called Flipgrid. Flipgrid allows the students to record assignments, such as book talks and poems they have memorized, so other students can listen and add comments of constructive criticism and praise. The teachers have coordinated and mapped out a comprehensive learning plan for each of the grades. Grade 5 students recently completed a timeline of the California missions for Mrs. Chiodini’s social studies program. This major project took lots of concentrated attention and, in many cases, was too detailed to fit on a single paper! We are so blessed to have these two dedicated teachers working hard to ensure that our students will be well educated for their future.
