THE RESPONSIBLE LEADERLeaders must remember that they are the custodians of society’s most powerful institutions.

They must therefore hold themselves to a higher standard.

Leadership is about change, hope and the future. Display a commitment to learning and developing yourself.

If you aren’t educated, you can’t help the uneducated; if you are sick, you can’t minister to the sick; if you are poor, you can’t help the poor.

Develop the ability to put personal performance into perspective. Over your long career, you will experience both success and failure. Humility in success and courage in failure are hallmarks of a good leader.

Be ready to invest in the development of other people. Be unstinting in helping your colleagues realize their full potential.

Realize the importance of loyalty to organization, profession, community, society and, above all, family. Most of our achievements would be impossible without our families’ support.

Assume responsibility for outcomes as well as for the processes and people you work with. How you achieve these results will shape the kind of person you become.

Balance achievement with compassion and learning with understanding.

Be conscious of the part you play. Be concerned about the problems of the poor and the disabled, accept human weaknesses, laugh at yourself – and avoid the temptation to play God.

Leadership is about self-awareness, recognizing your failings; and developing modesty, humility and humanity.

COMMENCEMENT 2012 | MUNICH |03

Dear Students, Parents and Alumni,

Welcome to the 2012 European University Munich Commencement Ceremony. First of all, I would like to thank you parents for your support of the students; students for your hard work; and all of you for your passion and dedication.

The world today is changing at a rapid pace. Neither I nor those of you who are graduating today can predict with total certainty what the world will look like in 12 months, much less in five years. I got my degree in 1973. Most of you parents will remember that as the year of the largest Oil Crisis in history. The future seemed especially uncertain and many mornings, we couldn’t use our cars because the gas to run them was simply too expensive. But here we are today – most of us car owners – celebrating this joyous occasion, demonstrating that the challenges that in their moment seemed so daunting eventually fade into distant memories.

It goes without saying that although all events – good and bad– inevitably pass, success always comes to those people who are prepared and ready for anything. For this I would like to advise you to always follow the three Ds: 1. Make the Difference; it is as much about being different as it is about making a difference in the world. 2. Be Diverse; do not put blinders on and shut out everything else. It is most important to know a little about everything – one never knows when those accordion lessons may come in handy. 3. Distinguish yourself; as the world grows it also shrinks, clients want special attention from a knowledgeable expert so specialize and find your niche.

Keep this advice in mind and you will possess the basic tools to prosper in this world.

Please stay in touch with us.

Sincerely,

Dr. Dirk CraenPresident

DISTINGUISHED GUESTS

Mr. Felix FinkbeinerFounder, Plant-for-the-Planet“Social Responsibility Award” “Corporate Social Responsibility Award”

Mr. Manfred WelzelCEO, McDonalds Kinderhilfe Foundation

Felix Finkbeiner, age 14, was inspired by Wangari Maathai when he developed the idea that children can plant one million trees in each country while he was in the 4th grade. After sharing his vision at the TUNZA children’s conference, Felix was elected by his fellow members to the UNEP Junior Board in 2008. As global citizens they wanted to solve global challenges. Children empower other children through one-day-workshops to spread the word about sustainability. The 14,000 climate justice ambassadors of today want to reach one million by 2020. During global consultations, they have developed a three-point-plan to save their future: 1. Leave fossil fuels in the ground 2. Make poverty a museum exhibition 3. Plant one billion trees In December 2011, the UNEP handed the Billion Tree Campaign to Plant-for-the-Planet. Now the children have the official world tree counter with 12.6 billion trees planted already. They have also invited the industrial sector to support their activities by asking them to pay a Future Fee of 0.1 % per million of their annual turnover.

Manfred Welzel studied Catholic Theology and Geography. Following his internship at St. Franziskus Secondary School in Olpe, in 1990, he took over management of the association “Internationaler Familienkongress – Familie ist Zukunft Bonn e.V.” (International Family Convention – Family is Future). As a corporate consultant, he has worked for a number of organizations, including Malteser Hilfsdienst (Emergency Services) in Cologne. He served as Managing Director of McDonald’s Kinderhilfe Foundation from 1997 until he became CEO of McDonald’s Kinderhilfe Stiftung in 2007. Under his leadership, the foundation has founded 12 Ronald McDonald Houses, along with a system to organize the work of voluntary staff and professionalization of fundraising activities. Father of three children, Welzel is a member of the Global Advisory Council of Ronald McDonald House Charities in Oak Brook, USA, as well as a guest speaker and lecturer in fundraising at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur.

Dr. Axel Munz Owner, Trachten Angermaier “Family Business Award”

Dr. Urban Kilian Wissmeier Owner & CEO, Dr. Wissmeier Consulting“Leadership Award”

Dr. Axel Munz studied economics at the Ludwig-Maximilian University in Munich. After graduating from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, he was a member of a family business operating in the leather apparel industry.Since taking over the company Angermaier in the 1980s and becoming a managing partner, Dr. Munz has turned Angermaier into a market leader in the traditional attire and accessories sector. In the process, he liberated the traditional costume from its dusty image, thus ensuring that traditional fashion is back in modern consciousness. In particular, during festivals such as Munich’s Oktoberfest, the majority of visitors today wear traditional outfits. For over 20 years, Angermaier has been creating complete product bundles, allowing young people to re-discover traditional costumes at attractive prices. With creations such as the ‘World’s most expensive Dirndl’ decorated with 150,000 Swarovski stones, the ‘Million Dollar Dirndl’ and the ‘Football World Cup Dirndl’, which is at display at the German History Museum, consumers have been able to witness a traditional festive garb transform into sparkling masterpieces. In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Munz is married and has two daughters, the eldest of which has been involved in Angermaier for over two years.

Dr. Wissmeier started his professional career in a bank as an apprentice. After working there, he went to Munich to begin his studies at the respected Ludwig-Maximilians-Universtät in Munich. Once he completed his basic studies he decided to gain international experience by going to Paris for a year to study the French language and work in a French company. Coming back to Munich he specialized in Strategic Management, Marketing and Market Psychology and graduated Diplom-Kaufmann again at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität. His career path led to a position as a Consultant in an international consulting company (spin-off of Roland Berger Strategy Consultants, Munich) and Marketing Director in a multinational company (Sixt Rent a Car, Pullach/Munich). He also went back to University as an Associate Professor and finished his doctorate in International Marketing Strategies. Dr. Wissmeier repeatedly went to the United States for work and conducted a great deal of national and international market research, strategy and marketing consulting projects with companies of different branches and sizes. With strong practical and conceptual experience in his background he founded Dr. Wissmeier Strategy and Marketing Consulting in Munich in 2000, which has been successfully on the market ever since. The focus of the company is cross-industry consulting for medium and large sized companies.

Mr. Amit Yudan Europe Business Development, Better Place“Sustainability Award” “King Fellow Award”

Mr. Thomas Caric Head of Windows and Office Category Marketing CEE and MEA, Microsoft (EMEA)

Amit Yudan works closely with strategic partners, energy companies, governments and investors in a joint effort to establish and operate Better Placein Europe. Amit has over 22 years of management experience in strategic planning, business development, network operations and technology rollouts in fields such as telecommunications networks, deployment of smart grid and automatic metering platforms, as well as semiconductors. He has personally led numerous projects from conceptual design to mass market deployment in many European countries. Amit received a B.Sc. in Industrial Management Engineering from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology and an MBA the European University Munich and Geneva campuses. In September 2011, at a consortium of the EU-backed TEN-T project, “Greening European Transportation Infrastructure for Electric Vehicles”, Amit Yudan publicly presented some of Better Place’s future visions for an electric car network as part of an ambitious plan to introduce electric vehicles throughout Western Europe. The event marked the official launch of a project aimed at planning a Pan-European network of battery switch stations throughout Austria, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg, Denmark and the Netherlands.

Mr. Caric started his professional career in the late 80s in the south German province Frankonia as a copywriter. He still smiles when he talks about the times when he rhymed “Geschichten aus dem Bärenwald (Stories from the Bear Forest)” for Germany’s biggest toy importer, “Simba.” Mr. Caric was then head hunted for the product management of action figures like Transformers, WWF and Jurassic Park. For his inner child, there was no better job in the world! After developing and realizing innovative concepts to shelf merchandise toys and games, another U.S. company got word and wanted to secure Mr. Caric’s expertise. That company was Microsoft. As head of Microsoft’s Consumer Products Marketing, Mr. Caric and his team rolled out hits like Age of Empires, Encarta, Works, Flight Simulator and the legendary Force Feedback Joystick, paving Microsoft’s way into the consumer market. The next big thing was on the horizon: Xbox. To work on such a game changer against rivals like Sony’s Playstation and Nintendo’s GameCube was a once-in-a-lifetime chance for any marketer. In 2002, Mr. Caric and his marketing team celebrated the successful launch of the first Xbox in Germany. Nowadays, Microsoft’s crown jewels are still Windows and Office and while the German market is as important and profitable as ever, for Mr. Caric, fun at work comes from watching and participating in emerging markets like the Middle East, Africa, Central and Eastern Europe. Since 2006, Mr. Caric has steered Microsoft‘s category marketing efforts for Windows and Office in EMEA, MEA and CEE. With the upcoming launches of Windows 8 and Office 15, Mr. Caric has no doubt that the most exciting days for himself and Microsoft are still to come.

The presence of loved ones is the best medicineWE HELP THE HEALING PROCESS

McDonald’s Kinderhilfe has been helping families to stay close by their sick children, hospitalized far away from home, since 1987. By providing families with temporary accommodation near hospitals, we enable young patients to benefi t from the presence of their parents, brothers and sisters – which helps them to get well sooner. The presence of loved ones is a wonderful medicine, and one that no doctor can prescribe.

Families of seriously ill children have found a home away from home at Ger-man Ronald McDonald Houses. In 2011 alone, there were more than 5,300.

Million euros has been invested by the McDonald’s Kinderhilfe Foundation over the past 25 years in projects for dis-advantaged and seriously ill children.

Years: That’s how long the McDonald’s Kinderhilfe Foundation has received the DZI seal of approval, awarded by the German charities‘ certifi cation agency for appropriate use of donations.

Million euros was donated in 2011 by McDonald’s Germany, its franchisees and its suppliers. And thanks to guests at McDonald’s restaurants, another 2.6 million euros was raised through donation boxes.

Ronald McDonald Houses are currently operated by McDonald’s Kinderhilfe in Germany. The foundation is part of the international Ronald McDonald House Charities. These operate more than 315 Ronald McDonald Houses and around 180 Ronald McDonald Oases in 31 coun-tries around the world.

The McDonald’s Kinderhilfe Foundation develops, operates and supports programs dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children. It does this through its own Ronald McDonald Houses and Ronald McDonald Oases, and its Grant Program. •
