description

The Icons will re-explore the way we see iconic photography, fashion and design. Designed with a knowledgeable and extensive research on the foundation of the different iconic eras, we create a reinterpretation of timeless. From the classical and golden era of cinema, to the heavy influences of Big Band and Swing to the All-American and road trip traditions, traveling all the way to the fusion of Eastern traditions and high fashion beauty with contemporary ethereal visuals, this issue is an homage to the eras that defined iconicism.

D I G I T A L

"I'm a man of few words. I don't like putting in anyone's mouth specific words that don't have any special meaning to them, so you can pick your own few words; just let those few words be full of nostalgia, expectation, some deception with a touch of hope and let my monochromatism serve as guide map to a road trip into your own emotions...."

I'M A MAN OF FEW WORDS, not because I don't have anything to say, but because I become unenthused by the way words can easily be misunderstood. As an artist, words tend to require a deeper context from a 'moment' and often subtract value from an overall experience or emotion. I found that painting and photography became my way to express many things that a group of words simply couldn't fully say.

You could ask me to give you the literal translation of my abstract expressionist paintings... You would probably get something like:

How much more of others am I going to know? How much more is the bond that unites us going to bring us even closer together? Memories waiting to be remembered and emotions waiting to be felt in our hearts always have a special trigger, and regardless of the environment, a road trip is never a road trip without music. Realizing how important music has been throughout time as a trigger to these wonderful memories is without a doubt, exciting. Fine art isn't any different.

For this issue, I wanted to explore iconicism. What makes an icon? Who makes an icon? What was so representative of that someone or something that it became the epitomized authority of a particular subject. Music has always been a definitive pinnacle of almost every decade and every era, acting as that conduit to the memories inside of our hearts; and, just like an inheritance, songs are passed down by generations in forms of precious iconic memories.

Don't be alarmed though, it is not how I always work. Although I am soft spoken and of few words, I take the usage of words seriously, recognizing that the effect of one word, to me, may mean something completely different to someone else. Be it because of the way it has been expressed with our body language and tone, or because of the upbringing of someone else is different to ours, words are delicate form of art as well. Honestly, a number of times, you don't need that many words to get your point across.

Sometimes you don't need to say anything at all.

Nowhere are the intricacies of communication, body language, and emotion played out more than tin the confined space of the family road trip. Even if there is a slight tendency to have limited tolerance for long hours of sitting inside a car , whether it is with family or friends, the exciting quality of a road trip does not always depend on the destination, it's the trip itself and the expectation of what's going to happen in between that holds a world of adventure.

The need to a more expressive and emotional way to get ideas across laid the foundation of music as we now know it, and whether or not lyrics are used, music itself has the ability to so intricately shape the feelings of those who long to feel and remember. From the way music helped to visually shape the glamour and allure of the 30's and 40's and the need for free expression in the 50's and 60's, all the way to experimenting with new technologies with music in the 70's and 80's, it is the work of iconic memories from previous decades passed down from one generation to the other in the form of music which inspire even newer forms of it.

" The sound of wind through the pines, bare feet brushing through leaves, snap-ping sticks like the spines of the weak.

When we started we were small and strong at heart, five southern souls damned to speak the truth. But with this responsibility comes pain and loss. And as the years passed our numbers grew smaller, and there were four. This did not stop these brave soldiers of thought, keepers of truth. They were older now and their soft footsteps through the forest had grown louder and stronger. Like the dust filled hoof beats of a thousand wild horses, they layer sound like musket fire, their melodies bend and twist like train-tracks. A music shaped from the calloused hands and wrinkled faces of their fathers. They have walked through the fire wide-eyed and crazy, and came out enlightened. You cannot stop these men, your armies can’t cease their hands, dampen this thunder, or silence their

tongues. We have trudged through the muddy swamps to freedom.

Our shoes are tattered and torn, but our feet are dry. As for our places in history, we will run naked through your streets before we sit decorated in your

halls. "

A perfect addition to your road trip down 'Memory Hwy playlist', is the all pretty-boy band, HEYROCCO from South Carolina. When childhood friends Nate Merli (Black Future) , Chris Cool (Cool) and Tanner Cooper (Taco) decided to put their studies on hold in pursuit of triumphant face-melting, 'the stars seemed to have aligned'. Their music is reminiscent of bands such as The Cure, Nada Surf, and 'early Pumpkins spiked with an experi-mental blend of Broken Social Scene meets On A Friday', offering such a compelling and energetic performance on stage. After spending the year touring with acts such as Surfer Blood, Mutemath, & Miniature Tigers, they began to work on their debut LP with producer Paul Ebersold (3 Doors Down, Sister Hazel) which is set to be release early-mid 2014.

Another perfect addition to your road trip down 'Memory Hwy playlist', is Buffalo Rodeo, an indie progressive rock band hailing from the hills of Bowling Green, Kentucky (USA) with an edgy, rapturing and ethereal sound. Describing their sound as 'Progressive Indie Rock with punchy drums, melodic bass riffs, ethereal synth textures, elaborate guitar tones, and addicting vocals, they are sure to tantalize your audial pallet.'
