but no one seemed to mind—we had 65+ attendees, a record amount! FCCC members,

friends and family attended the annual pizza party held at St. Michael’s Fire Hall on Satur-

just goes to prove FCCC members love their club and we can come out and support an event.

There was plenty of pizza ordered and the salad

outdone, the club members brought many scrump-

tious desserts and snacks. We all had a great time

9 Ways to Prepare Your Car for

Winter Weather Source: h"p://www.carcare.org/2013/09/9-ways-to-prepare-your-

car-for-winter-weather/

Winterizing your vehicle is a wise idea, says the Car Care

Council. An investment of an hour or two to have your vehi-

cle checked is all it takes to have peace of mind and help

avoid the cost and hassle of a breakdown during severe

weather.

“The last thing any driver needs is a vehicle that breaks down

in cold, harsh winter weather,” said Rich White, executive

director, Car Care Council. “A vehicle check before the tem-

peratures drop is a sensible way to avoid the inconvenience

of being stranded out in the cold and with the unexpected

expense of emergency repairs.”

The Car Care Council recommends the following nine steps

for winterizing your vehicle.

1. Have the battery and charging system checked for opti-

mum performance. Cold weather is hard on batteries.

2. Clean, flush and put new antifreeze in the cooling sys-

tem. As a general rule of thumb, this should be done

every two years.

3. Make sure heaters, defrosters and wipers work properly.

Consider winter wiper blades and use cold weather

washer fluid. As a general rule, wiper blades should be

replaced every six months.

4. Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure. If snow and

ice are a problem in your area, consider special tires de-

signed to grip slick roads. During winter, tire pressure

should be checked weekly.

5. Be diligent about changing the oil and filter at recom-

mended intervals. Dirty oil can spell trouble in winter.

Consider changing to “winter weight” oil if you live in a

cold climate. Have your technician check the fuel, air

and transmission filters at the same time.

6. If you’re due for a tune-up, have it done before winter

sets in. Winter magnifies existing problems such as

pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling.

7. Have the brakes checked. The braking system is the ve-

hicle’s most important safety item.

8. Have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide

leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold

weather driving when windows are closed.

9. Check to see that exterior and interior lights work and

headlights are properly aimed.

Motorists should also keep the gas tank at least half full at all

times to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas

lines and possibly freezing. Drivers should check the tire

pressure of the spare in the trunk and stock an emergency kit

with an ice scraper and snowbrush, jumper cables, flashlight,

flares, blanket, extra clothes, candles/matches, bottled water,

dry food snacks and needed medication.

How to Prepare a Car

for Storage Source: CarStorage.com

If you plan to store your vehicle for longer than a week,

you're going to need to do a few things to get it ready. Oth-

erwise, you're going to have flat res, a dead ba"ery...and

that's just the start of the problems that you'll have.

SO If you plan to store your car 6 months or less, here's what

you do:

1. Wash and wax exterior of your car. If you don't clean

and protect the paint, any dirt or contaminants le3 on

the car will corrode the paint, and turn into rust.

2. Clean and vacuum interior. Again, dirt and debris can

cause damage if le3 to sit for an extended period of

me.

3. Top off fluids. A full fluid reservoir will leave no space

for condensaon to occur.

4. Change oil and filter. Old oil will become acidic and eat

away at the inside of your engine. However, fresh oil will

take much longer to break down. So, your engine seals

should remain in good condion throughout the storage.

5. Grease steering and suspension components. A full

grease service will keep the seals, and rubber bush-

ings in your suspension from drying out while the car's in

storage.

6. Disconnect ba7ery (for older vehicles). If your ba"ery is

le3 connected, its charge will completely deplete, caus-

ing one or more of the inner cells to go bad.

7. Place ba7ery on a trickle charger (newer vehicles that

require a constant source of power). Most newer vehi-

cles are equipped with advanced computer systems,

which require constant power. Otherwise, they'll have to

be completely reprogrammed.

8. Top off fuel tank and add fuel stabilizer. A full tank

means that there's less room for condensaon, and a

stabilizer will keep the gas from breaking down and

evaporang.

9. Make sure parking brake is not engaged. If your vehicle

sits for an extended period of me with the parking

brake on, the brake pads can rust to the rotor/drum,

causing the wheel to seize. Instead, use a set of wheel

chocks to keep the vehicle in place.

Tips:

• Once you've prepared your vehicle for storage, write

down exactly what you've done, then place that list in

the glove box. That way, you'll have a step-by-step guide

to preparing the car to drive again, once you're ready.

• When storing a vehicle for over 6 months addional

steps will need to be taken.
