Township Manager LetterHello fellow residents. Now that the lazy days of summer have passed, we find ourselves reflecting on the activities that filled our summer calendar and look forward to the events that will carry us to a new year. Our summer started with the annual Memorial Day service, where Hank Rubner, a decorated World War II veteran, shared some of his past. Mr. Rubner represents a generation of our history that resonates with great patriotism. We are so very grateful that Mr. Rubner joined us, and are as equally grateful to his fellow veterans that have served our country so that we may enjoy our freedom. A freedom that I, all too often, seem to take for granted.

Recently, I had the opportunity to spend a weekend in Washington D.C. with my family. A visit to our nation’s capital rekindled great memories from my past. My father, who was a Korean War Veteran, insisted that we go each and every year.

When I was a young boy, I didn’t quite understand why he was so passionate about this annual voyage. Being there this summer reminded me of that annual pilgrimage. It also gave me reason to reflect on my dad’s commitment to our country and what it stands for. What he, Hank Rubner, and countless others fought for—our freedom.

In a time when it seems that we are at odds over just about everything from politics to race and religion, it might be helpful to take inventory of the one thing that has made this country the envy of every other society—our freedom.

My fellow Supervisors and I would like to take this opportunity to share with you some recent activities and comments.

We are happy to announce that the Township has recently added access to the second floor of 8 Township Drive. That is the building adjacent to our municipal offices at 6 Township Dr.ive Thornbury Township Chester County currently leases the first floor and we are now looking for a tenant or tenants to occupy the second floor. The rent is negotiable with tenant fit-out. Approximately 3000sf of office space is available. Please contact Jeff Seagraves if you are interested. This is a great way for us to bring revenue into the Township and at the same time offer great office space to a resident.

Congratulations to our 2016 Scholarship Winner: Noah Yoder. Noah accepted the scholarship at our August 17, 2016 meeting (see picture below). Noah is a resident who will be missed. He has always been a willing volunteer and is attending Widener University where he will study Engineering. Good luck, Noah!

It was sad to say good bye to Kelly Daudert, our Junior Supervisor for 2016 and we wish her much success as she pursues a degree from West Chester University. Through this

program we have enjoyed getting to know Rustin High School students, our future leaders, and we look forward to introducing our 2017 Junior Supervisor to the township in January. In closing, have a great fall and we will see you around town!

Jim Raith, Chairman board of supervisors

Mosquito Surveillance

Please take these precautionary measures:• Get rid of cans, buckets, plastic containers,

unused tires or any container that can hold water.• Clean out your gutters. Plants ,sticks and leaves

can clog gutter drains. • Drill holes outside recycling containers

so that water can drain.• Empty birdbaths• Store your wheelbarrow

in your shed or garage.• Ornamental pools should

be stocked with fish or aerated.

Tips to enjoy the outdoors: • Check your screens. Make sure

they are tight with no holes. • Dusk and dawn are mosquitos

most active periods. Limit your time outside if you can, or wear long sleeve shirts and long plants at those times.

• Put a lemon grass or citronella plant on your deck or patio.

• Bring a fan outside. Mosquitos are weak flyers and a breeze will detract them.

West Nile virus info can be found at the state website: www.westnile.state.pa.us.

At the August 3, 2016 Delaware County Council meeting, the Council approved a $46,789 grant application to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to continue its mosquito surveillance and control program, which now tests for both West Nile virus and Zika virus. To date, there have been no positive Zika mosquito tests in Delaware County, but residents are reminded to take precautions to eliminate any breeding ground for mosquitos and to protect themselves against mosquito bites.

Thanks to Dave Milowicki for capturing 2016 Fourth of July festivities!

Mary Taylor Frazer’s War: A testament to tenacity and courageOn September 11, 1777, the Battle of Brandywine took place just five miles from here. Colonel Persifor Frazer commanded a regiment of soldiers, fighting almost in his own backyard. His wife, Mary Taylor Frazer boldly faced British troops as they plundered the farm. On September 13, 1777 British soldiers surrounded the Frazer Farm. They hoped to capture Colonel Frazer and seize American supplies that they believed were hidden there. Mary’s children, servants, and an injured American soldier escaped into the woods. Mary and her slave Rachel remained to protect the home. The soldiers took food, clothing, horses, liquor, and a precious store of salt. Mary resisted British orders to help them find supplies. She hid important papers and valuable family

heirlooms. By her own account years later, she confronted looting soldiers and made them return some of the stolen items. Her defiant resistance made her a local heroine. British troops captured Colonel Frazer after the Battle of Brandywine and held him in Philadelphia’s new jail on Walnut Street. Mary risked the trip into the British held city several times to visit him. She even smuggled a letter to George Washington from her imprisoned husband. As a result, Washington was able to gain somewhat better treatment for American Prisoners. During the winter when the army lay at Valley Forge Mary rode far and near on horseback collecting all she could from friends and neighbors, to help supply the wants of the poor soldiers; and these she repeatedly took to the Camp herself. Visit this historical resource in Bonner Park for more information.
