3.4 Connection of ECL to PC

There are different ways to connect the ECL Comfort to the PC, depending on theECL Comfort model and whether the communication cable is to be connected at thefront or rear of the ECL Comfort. First the connection possibilities are explained foreach model and then the connections are illustrated on some pictures.

ECL Comfort 300 connection: ECL Comfort 300 can communicate directly from the front, without installing anyoption card. To connect at the front, the right front cover must be dismounted with ascrewdriver. Under the cover the RS 232 stick is placed, where the communicationcable can be connected. Communication from the rear requires an RS 232 optioncard (ECA81). The connections at the front always have highest priority.

ECL Comfort 200 connection:An RS 232 options card (ECA81) is required to communicate with the service soft-ware. After installing RS 232 options card it is possible to connect the communica-tion cable in the front or in the rear of the ECL. The connection in the front alwayshas highest priority.

4.1.2 COM-Port Set up

The ECL Comfort Service Software is communicating over the serial port of yourcomputer with the ECL Comfort regulator. Therefore you have to set up the serialport of your computer. The next window will ask you to set up the COM-Port of yourPC-system (Figure 4). All settings are default. The only thing that has to be changedis perhaps the COM-Port-number. The default value is COM-Port 1.

Maybe the mouse or other devices are connected to this port. In this case, connect theECL Comfort to the COM-Port 2 and select the belonging port-number in the soft-ware. 4 Comm.-ports are available in the software. After selecting the right COM-Port, select under "File" the setting for "Save and exit". Now the software will openthe serial port of your computer. If you only select "Exit" the software will continuewith the last selected port. The execution of "Close serial port" will close the COM-Port. You can also open this window from the main menu, which is described inMain Menu. This means that you can change the setting while the software is run-ning. This will be necessary, if you want to use the COM-Port with another softwarewhile the ECL Comfort Service software is running.

After this procedure, you are in the main menu of the program.

4.1.3 Main Menu

Now you have reached the main part of the software. There are several possibilitiesyou can start from here, for example reading data, writing data, logging data, etc.

After a successful set up of the serial port, the ECL Comfort Service Software willcheck the connection to your ECL Comfort regulator. When the connection is estab-lished, the ECL Comfort Service Software reads some information about the ECLComfort and checks if the software knows the application. If the application is un-known the software will download the application from the ECL Comfort’s MMIlist. Reading the MMI list can take up to 3 minutes depending of the application. After downloading the application from ECL Comfort the information is saved in afile and used next time the software recognises this application. You can move onwhen Figure 5 appears on the screen.

4.1.3.1 The “Setup” menu: “Com Port”

The first entry in the “Setup” menu is “Com Port”. If you select this menu, you willget the window for the serial port set up (Figure 4). When the software is running, you have already set up your serial port. You can use this menu, when you want touse the serial port with another software without closing the ECL Comfort ServiceSoftware. If you change the Comm-port an error will appear, as the software nolonger has contact to the ECL Comfort.

4.1.3.2 The “Setup” menu: “ECL info”

If you select the entry “ECL info”, the software reads the basic information from theECL Comfort regulator. This could be necessary, when you switch to another appli-cation while the software is running. The ECL Comfort Service Software is usingthis information for the following actions. If you switch the active application of theECL Comfort regulator while the software is running, you have to update the soft-ware by running the “ECL info” entry.

4.1.3.3 The “Setup” menu: “Filename”

If you are going to log any data from the ECL Comfort regulator, it is necessary togive the software a file name where these data should be saved. When selecting theentry “Filename”, the window below (Figure 6) will appear.

Note! Do not use any extension in the file name like “test_01.XXX”. The softwarewill give an extension itself. Also do not use any special characters like $ or @ in thefile name. You will run the risk of loosing all data in your measurement.

The date and time in the following fields are given automatically by the software andcannot be changed. When the data logging function is used a new file name will beplaced in \ECL_Comfort\data with the extension log.

All other fields are free of choice. You can type in any information you want. It willbe saved in the data file. The field remark can be used to note special conditions, forexample like the place of measurement, a special set-up or components.

You close the window by choosing “File” and “Save and exit”. If you want to leavethis menu without doing any changes choose “Close”.

Note! If a file with the selected name already exists, you will get a warning message. In this case, you can replace the file, or you can go back to the “File Setup” windowand type in another file name.

Files created from the service software:The software will create some files when it is used. The position, extension and con-tents of these files are listed below.

ECL Comfort\APPL:Application information: If the software has seen an application once, application in-formation will be loaded from this file. Download of MMI list is only necessarywhen the application is unknown to the software.Names are created automatically containing application name and version.

4.1.3.6 The “Data logging” menu: “Create parameterlist”

Before starting a data logging sequence the parameters to log have to be selected. Pa-rameters to log are selected in the Parameterlist window (Figure 8).

Figure 8: Parameterlist

The parameters are sorted in circuit order, and only active parameters in the applica-tion can be selected. If the application has only 1 circuit it is not possible to selectany parameters for circuit 2. Removing a single parameter from the list requires thatthe parameter is selected in the list before “<< Remove” is pressed. The max. num-ber of parameters to select for a data logging is 20. In the field “Parameters” are allthe parameters, which have circuit dependencies, placed and in “Favourites parame-ter” are all the sensors, which have no dependency of circuit.

There is also a possibility to save the parameterlist in a file. This gives you the possi-bility to get the same paramterlist when you are going to use the program anothertime. Choose “Save current settings” and the settings will be saved with the name al-ready used or a new name if required. The extension is “.txt” . Now you can alwaysreload the routine by choosing “Load routine”, when you want to use the softwarelater.

4.1.3.7 The “Data logging” menu: “Start data logging”

When “Start data logging” is selected the Scan rate window will appear (Figure 9).Here the period between logging of the chosen parameters is selected. The fastestscan rate possible is always suggested.

The fastest possible scan rate is dependent on the number of parameters in the pa-rameter list. After choosing the scan rate press “OK” and the data logging will start.Pressing “Cancel” cancels the data logging.

When the data logging is started you are able to see the incoming data in a table or ina graph. Figure 10 and Figure 11 show the window. In the menu bar you are able toswitch between the two views by selecting “setup” and then “Graph” or “Table”.If you are looking at the data in the graph mode, you can click the right mouse buttonand a menu pops up on the screen. Here it is possible to change some of the graphsettings e.g. auto scale the graph, or to make a zoom. Try to use it and see what hap-pens. The graph can be scaled in many different ways. It is also possible to changethe scale manually if you mark the max. or min. values on the axis and type in a newvalue.

If you want to stop the data logging, choose “Close” and “Stop datalog”. It mighttake up to 30 sec. before the software stops the data logging. This will happen whenthe software is doing a data log at this moment. The software will terminate, whenthe current measurement is finished.

Data log files:All logged information is saved in the log file with the selected file name, currentdate and the extension log. If the data logging is running over more than one day anew file is created at the start of a new day.File name TEST creates a log file called: TEST_10_02_99.log on the 10th February1999. The log files can be used directly in Microsoft Excel, where the logged datacan be edited.
