On behalf of all of the staff, volunteers and Board members at the Botanical Gardens, please accept our best wishes to you and your family for a happy and healthy new year. It is also our hope that in 2013 the Gardens will experience continued growth in the quality of our plant collection, flower shows, expansion of our educational programs and successful philanthropic efforts. This will be a challenge, but I

know that if the level of support we received from members, donors and volunteers in 2012 is replicated in 2013, we will have another successful year.

I would like to share with you a few memorable moments that occurred in 2012. First, the Great Plant Sale was a huge success. Pre-sale orders were the highest ever and the overall revenue from the sale reached record levels.

LifeCycles - March 16 - April 7An Orangery and Demonstration Garden Exhibit Architecture students from the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning will display their projects and models inside the Botanical Gardens. This exhibition is a sampling of results from a remarkable collaboration between the Department of Architecture and the Botanical Gardens. Over four months in early 2012, students, faculty, staff, volunteers, and outside design critics all collaborated to generate over sixty highly diverse strategies for thinking about the Botanical Gardens today and its potential architectural additions. In short, the life of the building, its planted and human inhabitants were all considered as alive and changing - as having lifecycles and therefore best studied as such. The studio was taught by professors Brian Carter, Nerea Feliz, Curt Gambetta, Jordan Geiger (coordinator) and Brad Wales.

Docents Needed! Teach the Wonderful World of Plants - Become an Educational Docent! We are looking for new volunteers to join us, give tours, and provide learning experiences for school, community and other groups. These volunteers are referred to as docents and partake in multiple training sessions to prepare them. Docents meet once a month and may sign up to work based on a master schedule. Tour Guide Docent: These docents provide tours to visiting groups, highlighting aspects of the Gardens, special plants and plant collections. A general knowledge of botany, plant families, environmental requirements for specific plants (all from the training sessions), and a willingness to continue to learn about the plant collections are essential.

Hands-on Docent: These docents provide hands-on experiences to school groups that tour the Gardens. Training to conduct the activities is part of the general docent training program.

Volunteers may choose either or both areas of docent work. Beginning volunteers will be paired with experienced docents until they are comfortable. If you are interested contact Nate Drag at 827.1584, ext. 207 or [email protected].
