a t our Home, we have made a concerted

effort to limit our consumption of paper.

in the past few years we have moved to paying

bills online and preserving records digitally.

the real watershed move to make our home

green came when I (finally) agreed to receive

my new York times subscription digitally on

my Kindle. i miss how the actual paper would

absorb my dining room table covering it in

knowledge, opinions, and even a recap of the

prior day’s games. However, in terms of my

carbon footprint, i know this little change can

make a big difference.

A reflection about limiting our use of paper

that is ultimately printed and distributed on

paper strikes an ironic tone. and it begs the

question: should this article be printed? it

is a good question, and one that we should

consider.

many of you share that the synagogue sends too

much mail. it is overwhelming! furthermore,

we know that the more we send the greater

the likelihood that it will end up unopened in

a recycling bin. We hear your concerns and

we agree with your point! We can do better!

Perhaps, it is even time to move to a digital

bulletin. of course we could print copies for

those without internet access or computer

capabilities. but, would it be more responsible

and ultimately better for the community if we

stopped mass-printing this bulletin?

In one of the first directives to humanity, God

charges adam and eve with the responsibility

of caring for the earth: “till it and tend it!”

(Genesis 2:15) As we mark the festival of Tu

b’shevat, let us consider how we can live up

to this lofty and holy challenge.

b eT ShIrA’S MeGA shabbat is an innovation! it will feature inspiring short services,

enlightening learning, and a tasty Kiddush. shabbat is the best time to gather as a community and for this shabbat, everyone, no matter what age, is invited and welcome. shabbat reminds us of the jewish teaching of making meaning of time by our relationships and our good deeds. Kick off mega shabbat with our very own black shabbos band playing ishabbat. Come to the service, and feel the blessing of our shabbat and community shabbat dinner. on january 12, the focal point of mega shabbat, we will highlight personal milestones such as birthdays and anniversaries in the context of a refined consolidation of prayer, with singing, learning and sharing in the sacred space of our arin Stacey Applebaum sanctuary. Let’s fill Bet Shira for this shabbat! mega shabbat will be on par with the energy of High Holy Days! later in the day on january 12, we host the annual Camping Havdalah on the Bet Shira field. Join us at 4:00 pm for snacks, tent set ups, Havdalah and camping activities on saturday night.

The Midrash on Genesis describes the world as being a gift for humanity. We must protect, care and appreciate the “present” of our world. this month we are commanded to appreciate the beauty of nature and the gift of trees. our bet shira community celebrates the gift of nature and the blessing of foliage on tu bishevat, the jewish arbor Day, a 2500-year-old holiday.

We mark this day with a yearly musical event and this year we are producing the 22nd annual tu bishevat musicale bringing broadway to bet shira. be here on january 26th at 8:00 p.m. for one synagogue sensation, our bet shira Cabaret Club accompanied by our signature drink, “the shiratini”.

jewish composers and lyricists have played a major role on broadway and american theater. leading into cinema, broadway was the blossom of the early Yiddish theater. musical theater was a most favorite genre. join us for an entertaining musical theater evening performed by the excellent talent of south florida. the cabaret setting will be our night on the town marking tu bishevat, celebrating the blessing of the earth and trees. tickets are available and everyone is welcome. While rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur focus on reviewing our conduct during the past year, a new calendar year has us looking ahead. We’ve had a very active and successful fall, but it is now time to consider what needs to be done in 2013. For the first six months of 2013, my resolutions on behalf of the synagogue include the following: 1. Complete the strategic Plan and distribute it to the congregation.2. Prepare a schedule and “plan” to implement the strategic Plan.3. formulate an approach to retire our accumulated debt, fund critical programs, and organize an endowment Campaign.4. Plan a spring fund raiser. rest assured that the lay leadership and clergy see great things ahead for the synagogue in 2013. the completion of the strategic Plan should not only give us a direction for 2013, but for many years to come as well. Have a great 2013!

sisterhood has activities for many interests. our newest project is Knit for israel to benefit our sister synagogue in Ashkelon eight miles from Gaza that is heavily bombarded by threats of war daily. Winter is upon that community and some warm items would be welcomed, which members of our craft corner as well as other experienced hands, could easily product. adults need scarves and children (ages 6-18) are in need of mittens, hats, scarves and socks. No particular pattern is required but fibers should be warm. Please contact Harriet rudoff, chair of Craft Corner for details on making items. We want to make and send them to israel quickly. sisterhood Book club will discuss The Elegance of the Hedgehog by muriel barbery on tuesday, january 22nd at 7:30 p.m. in the home of Phyllis ehrlich (8142 SW 83rd Place) and be sure to rSVP to her at (305) 274-1848. A witty, intelligent book written in the strand of German realism where two Parisian women and a Japanese filmmaker discover philosophical truths on beauty, time and the meaning of life that makes for an excellent read.

Movie club had a very nice turnout for “Shanghai Ghetto” that was shown at the end of november. the next movie is “Ruth Gruber”, the distinguished photojournalist from berlin who made her way to america, bringing images of war to the civilians. cooking Academy will have its next class “let’s roll along” about sushi making on Wednesday, january 16th at 6:30 p.m. at bet shira. We want to begin the new calendar year by thanking everyone who participated in our big December projects, the Chanukah baskets and Habitat for Humanity. special thanks to edy Cannon and Carol berk for chairing these two events.

thank you also to everyone who donated books for a school library that was destroyed by Hurricane sandy, with special appreciation to judi berger for coming up with the idea and arranging for delivery of the books.

it’s now time to begin planning for Mitzvah Day, which will take place on march 3. more details will follow in the coming weeks, but please join us. there will be projects for people of all ages both at the synagogue and out in the community. once again, Carol stein is taking the lead for the big day.

leading up to mitzvah Day, february will once again be Mitzvah Month at bet shira. look for our special collection bins in the main lobby and keep an eye out for special projects, including a clean-up day on the synagogue grounds.

for january, we are looking for volunteers for a sports day inn transition south on january 13. Please contact betsy Yegelwel or any of us if you are interested.

as we have said before, we can’t do these events without your help, so please volunteer. our committee members and project leaders work hard and do an amazing job, but they can’t do it alone. People of all ages are encouraged to participate. if any of these projects don’t appeal to you or

fit in your schedules – or if you have service projects of your own that need volunteers – please share your ideas and let us know how bet shira can help.

on a separate note, please remember that our sunshine committee exists to help members of our congregation when they are ill or otherwise in need of assistance, a call, or a visit. if you or anyone you know could use a kind word or a hand from our congregation, please let the clergy, the administration, or any of us know. We thank Debbie rosenkranz for her continued leadership of this committee.

as always, we continue with collections for a number of local agencies. for the Kosher Food Bank, bring your non-perishable food products to the donation bin located outside the synagogue office. We are also collecting books and magazines for the food bank and the chapman Partnership, and we also welcome donations of hygiene products and unused, unexpired medical products for the Open Door clinic and other agencies. We are also collecting feminine hygiene products for women at inn transition. there is a real need for all of these items, so all donations are greatly appreciated.

bet shira e.C.C. was well represented at this year’s n.a.e.Y.C. (national Association for the education of Young Children) Conference. The NAeYC annual Conference & expo is the largest early childhood education conference in the world. tens of thousands of educators choose from hundreds of presentations and exhibits. the naeYC conferences bring together early childhood educators to discuss the latest ideas and learn from one another. along with ariel Kobetz, our e.C.C. assistant Director and angela Castro, a master teacher in our Pre-nursery, we not only attended great sessions but we presented our own family Holiday bridge, which was very well received.How exciting it was to learn from such national and international leaders in early childhood education, as mem fox, australian author of many children’s books including, “Whoever You are,” Diane trister Dodge, founder of teaching strategies which produces our adapted curriculum, “Creative Curriculum” and becky bailey, creator of our “Conscious Discipline” Curriculum. so much of what we attended was just down right inspirational. and yet, i left the conference feeling very melancholy. in my heart, i know that what young children need for their social, emotional, cognitive and physical development is play, play and more play. but with the movement towards accountability and “meeting the core standards” the early childhood community is faced with a real dilemma. blakely bundy’s workshop,” Promoting Play in a “race to Nowhere” World: encouraging child-directed free play in affluent, competitive and overscheduled communities,” really brought this topic to point for me.in order for our young children to be successful in kindergarten and grade school, it isn’t just their “abC’s” that they have to learn. it is so important that they learn how to sustain positive relationships, that they participate cooperatively in group situations, that they use appropriate conversational skills and that they demonstrate fine-motor strength and coordination. These skills are developed while children are playing.our bet shira e.C.C. provides so many opportunities for children to master all the skills that are necessary for our children to succeed in school. but when our students are not in our structured school environment, they need opportunities to just play. Please schedule, “play dates” not more classes! Please open up your doors and encourage the children to play outside! Play is the work of children!

the secular new Year starts january 1st. it’s the day we all start our new Year resolutions and january 2nd is when we revise those resolutions and january 3rd we...finally get the picture!

Well, the world gets a new Year both religious and secular. each of gets a special day in the year and it’s called our birthday. marriages get a new Year called an anniversary and our children get a new school year that is called a grade promotion.

on january 26th we celebrate tu bishevat a new Year for trees. that is a new Year the jeC does with excitement and passion. We do an exciting project under the supervision of mrs. blank. We learn the value of making our earth a better and safer place. this is a holiday that embodies all that we must protect and cherish. it is not as popular as Hanukkah, Purim or Passover but just as important. Part of our responsibility as jewish educators is to teach our children that all holidays have a history & significance relating to who we are and how we conduct ourselves as human beings.

trees are very interesting! they are very much like humans. they come from many different families, different lands. some are one color while others are another. some are big and some are small. some are healthy and some are not. some are beautiful some are plain, some create shelter others are frail. Trees need water and food to survive; they need care and love, protection and pruning. Human beings need all these same elements. We feed our stomachs with food to give nourishment, we wear clothing to give us warmth and protection, we wear sunscreen to protect the health and color of our skin, and we cut our hair to unblock our eyes and ears.

trees like people as we have learned during some very stormy times are important to our survival. How we treat them, just like how we treat people is key to our survival both emotionally and physically… We water the trees and prune their leaves and we must do the same with our jeC families. We must water our people with kind words, prune our limbs with education and always know that we must protect our environment as we protect our words thoughts and actions. Watch our buds grow into beautiful leaves and flowers and hear the words of encouragement and understanding in this the new Year of 2013.

so, during this month as we celebrate tu bishevat we implore everyone to help nurture our environment, our community and the world we live in.

This year’s tournament was another success: the weather was terrifi c; the golfers had a great time; breakfast, snacks, drinks, hot dogs, pretzels, and margaritas were plentiful. Financially, Bet Shira received needed funds for its operations and programming.
