LENT – DON’T JUST WATCH,

JUMP IN

The 40 days of Lent begin each year with Ash

Wednesday and continue through Holy Saturday, the

day before Easter Sunday. Sundays are not counted in

the 40 days, as Sundays since ancient times have been

called Little Easters. Lent can be fascinating as we

follow Jesus to Jerusalem and his suffering and death.

But let’s make it more than fascinating, let’s jump in

and make it an adventure in which we are

participants.

Many people grew up with the idea that one is to

“give up” something for Lent, such as chocolate or

movies or drinking or something else one enjoys, as a

way of sacrificing or avoiding distractions. That has

some good psychology to it, so if you wish to do that,

go for it. Another valuable discipline during Lent is

to commit to praying more regularly and for a special

chosen purpose. Most of you have received our

bookmark for this season, defining how to pray for

God’s will to be done in your life and through our

church’s ministries. If you don’t have your bookmark

yet, pick one up Sunday or ask at the church office.

The bookmark is a challenge from Pastor Sam and

myself to join us in prayer every day till Easter, with

Jesus as our host.

This year on Sundays we will read some of the most

exciting ‘big lesson’ stories from John, such as

Nicodemus, the woman at the well, the man born

blind, and the raising of Lazarus. Don’t miss these

amazing encounters with Jesus, in which every person

involved discovered their life to be irreversibly

changed in a wonderful way.

And don’t miss our midweek Lenten services each

Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. and again at 6:45 p.m., with

a soup and bread supper at 6:00 p.m. Each week we

will absorb new meaning from Jesus as he heads for

the cross.

you’re home with an attitude of prayer. Pray. Focus

on the Christian Texts first (“New Testament”). We

have a good study going and we’ll point out the

Gospels we’re working on. Join us once, join us often,

all are welcome!

FREE COMMUNITY MEAL

Every first Tuesday of the month at 5:00 p.m., we

Highline Food Bank, and Reaching Out With Hope,

various volunteers from all sectors of our community

serve a hot, home-cooked supper, spiced with warm

smiles and friendly manners, to all who come.

Conveniently located right in the Fellowship Hall,

this charitable program typically welcomes an

average of 100 attendees, ranging from about 50

during the summer to a high of around 170 at

Thanksgiving.

All are welcome to this FREE Tuesday dinner and

experience what it means to be kith, where neighbors

can take part in a wholesome meal prepared and

served with a caring heart by those who value

CHURCH MAINTENANCE Wednesday, March 4—9:00 a.m.

Yes, even during Lent we need help getting the

church squared away. On these first Wednesdays, we

ask people to perform routine work involving the

repair and general maintenance of facilities, buildings,

and equipment under the supervision of our trusty

Custodian, Gordon King.

some hard (or not so hard) work. People with a

working knowledge of equipment, tools, and

machinery are a big plus, but not required. If you can

swing a hammer, you’re hired! Thanks and come on

out. Coffee and snacks provided.

LADIES BOOK CLUB

Come to the of Ladies Book Club on

Monday, March 9, at 11:00 a.m.

The book for the month of March is

Kisses from Katie by Katie Davis

Majors and Beth Clark. This New

York Times bestselling book is the

account of a courageous 18-year-old

from Nashville who gave up every

comfort and convenience to become the adoptive

mother to 13 girls in Uganda.

A passion to follow Jesus.

Katie Davis Majors left over Christmas break of her

senior year for a “short” mission trip to Uganda and

her life was turned completely inside out. The book

invites you on a journey of radical love down the red

dirt roads of Uganda.

Join the ladies in the LIBRARY for lively discussion

and tasty treats all facilitated by Claudia Sawin. All

women welcome. Even if you haven’t read the book

or you meant to read it, come to the discussion and

hear the thoughts and questions of those who have.

HOSPITALITY HOUSE EVENING

MEALS—ONCE AGAIN,

THANK YOU—POP!

PoP has done it again! The meal provider list is full

for March 3-8. Our Community Meal as well as

Claudia Sawin, Diane Pierson, Gail Korakis, Jude

Gustafson, and Mel Schneider are the volunteers.

THANK YOU hardly seems enough—but THANK

YOU! The House residents love your choice of meals.

They say you are the best—and you are! Everyone

appreciates your caring hearts—me included.

HOSPITALY HOUSE SUPPLIES

March is one of the two months that PoP is

specifically asked to donate household and office

supplies. In the past another church has shared this

responsibility with us—BUT this month we are the

only one. So PLEASE note the needs that are listed

on the HH bulletin board. You delivering the items

to the House really helps—1419 SW 150th, Burien

(Lake Burien Presbyterian Church). If that isn’t

doable, place the supplies in the HH donation box,

under the HH bulletin board. Once again, thank you.

Donations are tax deductible.

LENTEN SPECIAL OFFERING

RECIPIENT

Blackfeet Nation—The Blackfeet Nation in

Browning, MT, is where our Youth Group is going

on their mission trip this summer. There are so many

needs there, especially for children growing up in an

impoverished area with many social and emotional

struggles. Helping to give the children of the

Blackfeet Nation a hand up in their growth as

productive young people would certainly be a

blessing to them. Melodie Schneider

WOMEN OF PRINCE OF PEACE

The theme for our Bible

study “WE ARE

CALLED” continues in the

month of March...and we

will see it again in April.

In January we studied the

call of several Old Testament prophets which was

fascinating and at times dramatic.

In February we looked again at familiar stories about

how the apostles and disciples were called...these were

unique but dramatic too...Saul on the road to

Damascus and even Ananias had to respond to a call

to minister to this frightening man.

This month we will tackle how we are personally

called what to do and how to serve. We will visit the

familiar stories of the Samaritan, Joseph and the Phar-

aoh of Egypt, and Queen Esther. How were they

called and how did they respond?

As is usually the case, Gather is full of inspiration.

How do these authors serve? A quote that stuck out

to me was on p.13 in an article entitled Our

Responsibility. The author said, “Our vocation is to

serve Jesus by being Jesus to our neighbor. And our

neighbor is everyone. But we have different gifts and

different circumstances, so we serve differently and as

best and fully as we can...” Different gifts and

different circumstances resonates, doesn’t it? And

that is a very good thing.

Circles will meet the third week of March: JOY meets

on Tuesday, March 17, at 6:30 p.m.; FAITH meets on

Thursday, March 19, at 10:00 a.m. Both meet in the

church library. All women are welcome to attend.

LOVE PROJECT for March—Our Lenten emphasis

is in support of the Highline Area Food Bank. To

help you with your shopping, the food items listed

below are suggestions that are always in demand:

• Cereal

• Fruit Cups

• Snacks (think chips, crackers, etc.)

Purchases can be dropped off at the church and placed

in the food bank bin in the narthex. Thank you, as

always, for your generous support. It is greatly

appreciated.

QUILTERS continue to sew and tie quilts for

Lutheran World Relief. They have their work space

all organized in the Education Building. Join them at

9:00 a.m. on Thursday mornings. Tops can also be

sewn at home, but chatter and laughter can be heard

coming from that part of the building.

PRINCE OF PEACE LUTHERAN CHURCH

CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING

January 11, 2020 Meeting called to order at 6:31 p.m.

MEMBERS PRESENT: Dave Hill, outgoing

President; incoming President nominee John Gilbert,

Pastor Conrad Tollefson; Mark Bergin, Treasurer,

Pam Randall, Secretary; Melodie Schneider; Pastor

Sam Sseba; Susan Vernon; Jude Gustafson, Nancy

Hadley.

DEVOTION and COMMUNION: Pastor Tollefson

shared some thoughts on Isaiah. “Is it too light a

thing that you should be my servant to raise up the

tribes of Jacob?” “I will give you as a light to the

nations…” this speaks to our mission statement at

POP. We will be a neighbor among all neighbors.

Examples include tutoring, MAPP, vacation Bible

school, community meal connection, our Ethiopian

congregation, our Hispanic congregation. Pastor

Tollefson led us in prayer for both the Ethiopian and

Hispanic congregations that also gather here at POP.

APPROVAL OF MINUTES: Minutes from

December 2019 tabled until next meeting due to no

copies available.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Mark Bergin: Giving in

December rose, which paralleled where giving was in

2017. Actual giving worked out to be about 105% of

what was projected as necessary, which happens to be

in line with expenses which were also about 105% of

what was projected for 2019. He noted that giving

Page 9: Banner Prince of Peace Lutheran Church€¦ · The Publication of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Banner March 2020 19030 8th Ave S, SeaTac 98148 1 Volume 29 Issue 3 LENT – DON’T

The Publication of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Banner March 2020 19030 8th Ave S, SeaTac 98148 9 Volume 29 Issue 3

did exceed expenses by the end of 2019.

PASTOR’S REPORT: Pastor Conrad: Joseph To has

been extended a contract for employment as our new

Director of Music Ministries and will be commuting

from WSU weekly where he is studying for his

Master of Music Direction.

Coming up February 11-13, 2020, Pastor Paul

Hoffman will be leading the third annual pastoral

mentoring conference which will include worship here

at POP.

This Saturday, January 25, 2020, Safety in a Place of

Worship will take place from 10:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.

here at POP. One of the presenters will be Tonya

Seaberry from Des Moines Police Department.

We need ideas for ministries to receive our Lenten

offering and these should be turned in by February 2,

2020, to be in time to vote at the February 9, 2020

[congregational] meeting.

Pastor Tollefson also related that a few weeks ago

PSE Foundation came to POP congregation and the

Emergency Disaster Preparedness Committee at POP

regarding installation of an emergency generator.

They were especially interested in POP because of our

disaster preparedness program [and proximity to

SeaTac Airport]. We are already a site for Red Cross

emergency housing. A bid came in from the

electrician for a little over $50,000. There are some

things the grant cannot cover. We have responded

that we are unable to participate financially for a

program that we did not initiate. PSE responded by

granting a check for $60,000 to POP to cover the

purchase and installation of a generator. The plan is

to have it run by natural gas. It will need to be run

tested and maintained on a regular basis. There is a

one-year deadline from receipt of the check for the

project to be completed and up and running.

It was moved by Dave Hill and seconded by Jude

Gustafson, unanimously approved, that Ron Stojack

and/or Don Rova be asked if they would be willing to

be appointed to be a liaison on the generator project

with PSE Foundation with a purpose of looking into

the feasibility of actively participating in this ongoing

project. Pastor Conrad and Pastor Sam will work out

who approaches the above candidates.

Pastor Sam: Reported that he is happy to be back

after his clinicals and his next week at seminary will

be his last week as he finishes up this intense program

of study.

UPCOMING FEBRUARY 9, 2020

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING: Pres. Dave Hill

stated he will be present and is willing to initially

chair the meeting through the approval of minutes.

Right after that he would have the nominating

committee put forth the approval of incoming

President John Gilbert, who then would take over the

rest of the meeting. For this meeting the council will

provide cookies, pastry or pie.

Also being presented at that meeting will be the 2020

Spending Guide. Mark reminded us that we did a

half-year budget because there is so much going on in

the first half of 2020. This will necessitate a mid-year

congregational meeting. He went on to discuss the

proposed spending guide, which will require weekly

giving of $5,630. This is about a 4.5% increase from

the budget of 2019, and the giving in 2019 was close

to this amount.

It was moved by Nancy Hadley and seconded by Jude

Gustafson to approve the proposed spending guide for

the first half of 2020 to be presented at the next

congregational meeting.

Other business to be presented at the congregational

meeting: an update by Pastor Tollefson on waiting

for feedback from Compass and the timetable on any

affordable housing project involving outside

agency(ies), touch on stewardship, emerging

ministries, assets.

Next council meeting: February 11, 2020.

WELCA: Melodie Schneider: We have gotten quite

a few donations from funerals held recently which

WELCA is trying to use for outreach. Every month

WELCA plans to write a check for $25-$50 to an

outside group. This month we gave $50 to Reaching

out with Hope, $50 to Highline Schools weekend food

Page 10: Banner Prince of Peace Lutheran Church€¦ · The Publication of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Banner March 2020 19030 8th Ave S, SeaTac 98148 1 Volume 29 Issue 3 LENT – DON’T

project. The LOVE project for January is scarves,

hats, and gloves for Peace Shelter. In February there

will be a soup-er bowl month for February and ask for

soup for the food bank.

In July 2020 the National Women’s Conference will

be held in Phoenix, AZ. Julie Landskov and Judy

Voeller will be attending. Funds were offered to each

of them for meals or other expenses, but both declined

so $200 will be sent to WELCA for the convention.

Finally, more donations of fabric arrived yesterday for

quilting.

YOUTH: Sam: Reported feeling totally blessed that

the youth are meeting each week. They come out of

the meetings energized. Christy (and Casey) are

doing a great job and is a natural at it. The kids are

looking forward to the meetings and don’t have to be

forced to go up. They are planning a mission trip to

Montana in July 2020. They have asked Sam to be a

part of that trip.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS/NEW BUSINESS:

Pastor related talking to Joseph To about concerts

that Joseph has been having at his prior place of

employment. He would like to do that here. Funds

raised would often go to the general fund, however, he

would like to know if it could go to work on the piano

which is in need of upgrade repair beyond a simple

tuning. Health and human needs, music or youth

have been historically acceptable fundraising projects

per POP bylaws.

Meeting adjourned at 8:10 p.m.

IT’S TIME TO BE

HONEST Spirit Article-March 2020

Wouldn’t it be nice if people

could talk about their

anti-anxiety medication or

depression medication as easily

as their cholesterol medication? Unfortunately, even

though we have come a long way in society, there is

still some shame when talking about illnesses in our

brains – whether it is anxiety or depression or

addiction or bipolar disorder or ADHD or a traumatic

brain injury (TBI) or other mental health challenges.

Sadly, there seems to be an added stigma when one is

a deacon or a pastor. I am not sure why. Perhaps it is

because rostered ministers are supposed to have

everything in order. Perhaps it is because rostered

ministers are supposed to be the helpers rather than

the ones who need help. I don’t know. But the stigma

is present.

The truth is, in the United States nearly one in five

adults experience some form of mental illness. It is

very common. And, in most cases, it is treatable with

therapy and medication. With the right treatment

plan, most are able to lead a full and happy life.

I encourage us all to be compassionate and to be

truthful with one another. We all need to get to a

point where we can be honest regarding our mental

health, whether we are a rostered minister or a

layperson. This is for the sake of the church, the

person involved and their family.

When I was a young adult, I learned that my great-

grandmother suffered from schizophrenia. I had

never met her and thought she had died years before I

was born. The reality was that she died only a few

years before I heard about her. You see, she had been

institutionalized for years and no one in the family

spoke of her. I am saddened that I never had a chance

to meet her. And I am saddened for the shame my

Page 11: Banner Prince of Peace Lutheran Church€¦ · The Publication of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church Banner March 2020 19030 8th Ave S, SeaTac 98148 1 Volume 29 Issue 3 LENT – DON’T

family held close. My family and I are less than what

we could have been together.

While I am thankful that things are different than

when my great-grandmother was confined to an

“asylum” (as it was called back in the day), we still

have a long way to go. I encourage all of you to be

honest if you are experiencing symptoms. I ask all of

you to listen and see and empathize with those who

are struggling. And encourage those around you to

get help as needed.

Truly, we do not want you to struggle alone.

RESOLVING JEALOUSY Oh, the joy that does abound,

resolving jealousy, I’ve found.

Some go asking, “Who’s the best?”

Then “Can I conquer all the rest?”

Long ago, you may recall,

Adam and Eve, and then the Fall.

Then when Cain and Abel came,

the world would never be the same.

Cain saw Abel’s sacrifice;

the firstborn of his flock so nice,

shining in the noonday sun,

as if a contest he had won.

One day follows to the next,

and so it follows in the text,

Cain slew Abel, down he went,

his jealousy and rage did vent.

Sinking feelings, quivered lip,

Cain fell from that one-upmanship;

when he felt a lack of hope,

he needed an up periscope.

Up periscope; view the scene.

And gain perspective on the green;

is it greener, greater, wide,

just over on the other side?

Should one take another’s place,

undoubtedly, he’d have to face,

all the bad as well as good,

but who would want to, if he could?

So, resist the tempter’s snare,

that bids us turn, and look, and stare;

resist that urge to compare,

and count your blessings everywhere.

QUILTERS!

Are you currently doing a Marie Kondo spring

cleaning? Are your old sheets, blankets, fabrics

(cotton blend) not “sparking joy?” If so, we have the

answer for you. Bring those discarded sheets (fitted

are great, too!), blankets, and fabric here to PoP. Our

quilters are always looking for donations of this type

to make the quilts that are sent to Lutheran World

Relief and distributed around the globe. You can

drop those items at the church office at just about

any time.

Prince of Peace’s Banner is published every month.

Deadline is Wednesday, 10:00 a.m., for publication

during the last week of the month.

CHILDREN’S BULLETINS

Don’t forget that we have a printed Children’s

bulletin available every Sunday during worship. This

is a fun page for kids to read along with the service

and have some activities to occupy their busy minds

and hands. Ask the Ushers for a copy of this if you

have brought a child to worship OR if you would like

to bring one to your child at home.

Have you noticed the staples in the Sunday bulletin?

With a new year comes new ideas! We recently

signed a new lease with a different copier company

when our lease with Ricoh expired. With that, we

have the ability to print a lot more interesting items,

including the church directory with photos that we

can instantly update. This copier also makes printing

the bulletin and Banner a LOT easier.

So, with that, if you’ve not been happy with the photo

of you from the 2016/2017 photo directory, we can

take almost ANY picture and put that into our

in-house printable directory.

Bring any photo you like of yourself to the church

office and we can put that in. I will print those in

small batches for people to take home. This will save

a lot of money printing only when we have changes to

the directory.

Have fun with it! Put a picture of you with your

family pet or favorite hobby item into the mix. We

should be able to keep printing this new way going

forward so that we no longer have to outsource our

directory to a professional photographer and schedule

sittings.

EASTER CANDY AND

EGGS NEEDED

For Children to age 12, the Easter egg

hunt will be on Saturday, April 11, at

10:00 a.m. It will be divided into two age groups (6 and

under; 7-12). We are accepting donations of wrapped

candy and plastic eggs at this time!!!
