What a truly fun year we’ve had! More fabulous plants than I could ever imagine, a Spring season that seemed to last forever and so many new visitors from near and far! Joyful parties to top all of our previous ones and even charming garden dance performances! Local mosaic artist, Tina Amidon, debuted her incredibly cool “Allegorical Reliquary” Mosaic Chapel dedicated to “women’s hidden work” here on Mother’s Day and we are so thrilled that it now has a semi-permanent home here! We were teeming with fun and educational free talks by artists, gardeners, designers and habitat and urban farm experts and more. And this year will be even better with slideshow and movie presentations in our brand new and awesome Ali-Baba tent! Do come! One day, last November, I stood in the middle of the nursery feeling totally amazed about what this little-nursery-that-could has become. I want you to know that it’s all of you who have made this happen with your enthusiasm and support. Thank you all! I can’t wait to see what will happen this year! If you are new to “Annie’s” and this is the first time you’re seeing our catalog, do know that this is the TIP OF THE ICEBERG, a tiny sampling of the unbelievable number of varieties we grow. Discover everything else on our website, including tasty tips and delicious garden slideshows. While you’re there, sign up for our totally excellent and droolworthy emails alerting you to our don’t miss “one-crop- wonders,” parties and sale dates. If you’ve never ordered from us, we’d like you to know we grow plants the old fashioned way, mostly from seed, in the wind, rain and sun (no greenhouses), so they are hardened off, healthy and strong when they arrive at your door. Our customer care and meticulous, designed-by-us packaging is so good, we’re rated tops in the Garden Watchdog “TOP 30,” which is totally excellent! So now kick back, relax and turn off all those i-thingees. It’s time to indulge in some lovely garden inspiration!

Dianthus ‘Chomley Farran’As far as I have researched, this is the only remnant available in the U.S. of the type of Carnation or Dianthus so beloved by plant breeders of the 1700s and 1800’s. Sadly, there used to be over 200 of these striped varieties – called “Bizarres” – now lost to cultivation, some with blooms to 4” across! We are happy to help preserve this fantastic purple and rose bi-color, bearing 2.5” slightly scented flowers. Since the branching, foot-long, arching stems are almost pendulous, enjoy them in an elevated pot or hanging basket. Cut flowers to die for! Rich, well drained soil. Sun/Part sun. Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 6-10. #2214 #12.95

Primula auricula ‘Angelo Hayes’SUPER-DUPER EXCLUSIVE!Harking back to the almost impossible-to-find green-edged Auricula primroses of yesteryear! Extraordinary striped green and purple edged blooms are displayed 10-20 to a cluster atop numerous 5” stems and thick, almost succulent, snail resistant foliage. Long lived, plant in a container for close-up enjoyment. Evergreen and blooms 12 mo. a year along the coast, Spring thru Fall in harsher climes. Rich, well-drained soil. Side-dress with compost in Spring. 8” x 12.” Big ups to our resident plant geek, Claire Woods, for discovering this beauty in a batch of seedlings! Bright shade. Avg. water. Pe-rennial USDA zones 3-10. #3123 $14.95

Psoralea fleta “Weeping Blue Broom” WEB/CATALOG EXCLUSIVE!

Little did we realize when we trialed the seed of this obscure South African Psoralea that we were about to cause horticultural pandemo-

nium! That incognito, little seed quickly grew into a beautiful small tree that had everyone’s lust-o-meter spinning off the dial as it began

to bloom! Large, Wisteria-like panicles (to 12” long) of 1” lavender-white sweet pea flowers

permeate the air from a good distance with an intense grape soda fragrance. Appearing pro-

fusely (woo-hoo!) from early to mid-Summer – they’ll stop everyone in their tracks! Multiple

trunked and to only 12’ tall, “Weeping Blue Broom” makes a magical specimen tree for a

small garden. Fast and super easy, it should bloom by its second year requiring only well-

drained soil and an annual bit of compost. Sun. Avg./Low water. Small tree USDA zones

8-10. #2586 $8.95

Lathyrus odoratus ‘Erewhon’Are you flipping out over this Sweet Pea as much as we are? 25 years in the making by New Zealand breeder Keith Hammett, this cultivar blows our minds with reverse bi-coloration! With rich, blue-purple “wings” and a pink-lavender “banner,” it’s just the awesome treasure to get your gardener’s heart thumping! Sweetly fragrant, just a bit of shade brings out the richest colors. Self-sows, too! To 6’ tall. Sun/Part shade. Avg. water. Annual. All zones. #3369 $4.95

Nicotiana alata ‘Lime Green’Lime green flowers, my friends, com-bine splendidly with most anything growing in your garden. And these are the old-fashioned, 3’ tall, super branchy kind that are perennial in USDA zones 9-10. Cut back to base foliage and add a bit of compost when they need a jump. Self-sows, too! So pretty in a vase! Deer resistant! AM Sun/Bright shade. Avg. water. Perennial USDA zones 9-10, annual elsewhere. #724 $4.95

Cynoglossum amabile ‘Azul’EXCLUSIVE!Easy, fast and just the richest deep blue “Chinese Forget-Me-Not” I’ve ever seen! To 2.5-3’ tall, you get a profu-sion of small, true blue flowers on erect branching stems for months. Cut it back to the base before it goes to seed and it will bloom again, plus it self-sows readily for future bona fide blueness! Adaptable to sun or bright shade and a lovely companion to roses. Sun/Bright shade. Avg. water. Annual, all zones. #3655 $4.95

Lupinus succulentus ‘Rodeo Rose’

Fanciful and cheery! I love this rare color form of our CA native “Arroyo Lupine.” Loads of 4-6” sweetly scented, pink and cherry bi-colored spikes spring forth above pretty Lupine leaves on well branched stems. To 30” x 30”, it makes a fast filler and blooms for months, looking candylicious next to Nicotiana ‘Lime Green.’ Self-sows when happy and next year’s seedlings need no additional water. Mildew and rust free! Thanks to master horticul-turalist Roger Raiche for this fabulous selection! Deer resistant! Full sun, rich soil for best show. Sun. Avg. water. Annual, all zones. #1603 $6.95

With so many enchanting California natives and colorful cottagey classics to choose from, it’s truly easy (and entertaining!) to create picture perfect Springtime thrills like these. Here’s a sampling of the fun I had with last year’s Spring gardens – I hope you like them! Just remember, good com-posty soil is the trick-erooni!

We offer well-established plants in fat, 4” square pots. Our plants are removed from their pots, wrapped in moist material and bagged. They are then placed back in their pots and secured by our custom inserts. We prefer our larger size to the long thin containers commonly used by mailorder nurseries. Those slimmer pots conserve nursery space and reduce shipping costs but may result in slower plant recovery and growth after transplanting. With a more natural, spreading root pattern, our plants will thrive and delight you with their high success rate!

Delphinium belladonna ‘Bellamosum’I use the belladonna Delphiniums in my Spring and Summer gardens (sky blue Del-phinium ‘Cliveden Beauty’ p. 16) because they are ultra blue, easy, quick to bloom, they keep re-blooming till Fall and they overwinter well. Good mildew resistance, too! To 3’ tall and nicely multi-branching, they don’t need staking. When the flow-ers are spent, just cut back to 3” tall, add a little compost and they’ll be back in action! Lovely cut flowers, gorgeous with yellow or apricot roses. Sun. Avg. water. Perennial USDA zones 3-10. #323 $7.95

Delphinium elatum ‘Double Innocence’ Our favorite white Delphinium and as vigorous and reliably perennial as ‘Royal Aspirations’ (p. 30), ‘Double Innocence’ is blessed with extra large double blooms centered with a charming green eye. “I wanted to thank you for the flowers I got from Annie’s. I live in northern Illinois, where weather can be kinda tough on plants in the spring – especially new plantings. ALL of them survived and flourished with great blooms. The Poppies ALL bloomed fabulously and the Agrostemma - spectacular!!! I hope the seeds take over in the bed I planted them in. My wife isn’t big into flowers or garden-ing, but was so impressed with how well they did, I have her blessings to order whatever I want next year - HA.” –Bill K., Spring Grove, IL

Salvia clevelandiiProbably the most desirable of all native Salvias for its at-tractive color and form and most of all, for its delectable foliar fragrance, which I find very sexy – even at my age – ha! Blooming May and June, its hummingbird-magnet, tubular flowers are held in whorls atop the 3’ x 3’ nicely rounded form. Now here’s the thing – Mr. Clevelandii requires excellent drainage or he gets cranky – so plant him on a slope or provide most excellent drain-age. Deer resistant. Drought tolerant. Sun. Low water. Peren-nial USDA zones 8-11. #912 $7.95

Asclepias speciosa “Showy Milkweed”Undeniably stunning in bloom, everyone who can should grow our native perennial “Showy Milkweeds” as they are THE host for western Monarch butterflies, which lay eggs on stems and leaves. Thriving in poor, dry, well-drained soil, it’s tough and vigorous with gorgeous silvery-green leaves. FRAGRANT flower clusters are 4-5” across and made of velvety pink and white star-flowers. Blooms late Spring to

late Summer, then goes deciduous. But don’t worry, it will return next Spring with more stems. Now this is important: Asclepias speciosa looks terrible in a 4” pot and ships dormant until June. But don’t dismay – just plant it – water it a bit the first year and don’t fret if it disappears – it’s just going temporarily dormant. Once established, you’ll be delighted with the fruits of your patience. Deer resistant! Drought tolerant! Sun/Part sun. Avg. water/Dry. Perennial USDA zones 4-10. #125 $8.95

return soon.” By July, we’re feeling totally guilty, thinking we didn’t give our new baby what it needed. “It’s my fault and I’m a crummy gardener!” Well, I’m here to say “No you’re not! It was a crummy-wimpy plant (or not happy with our Mediterranean climate) and you are an excellent gardener!” Here’s an example: This past year I was told by more than a few visitors, including a garden designer, that they won’t even try to plant one of my all time favorite cottagey perenni-als. They tell me: “Dianthus are just annuals with a really short bloom season and they always die!” Hmmmm. Dianthus? An-nuals? How sad! Where did you buy them, I asked? Oh, at the “box store.” Well, there you go! Those are Dianthus chinensis (sold as perennials) that really behave as annuals in the ground. The thing is, these Dianthus are so highly available and bloom so massively in a 4” pot that box store “garden centers” and their suppliers much prefer them for quick sales. Sadly, it’s be-come harder to find the true, and in my opinion, far superior, truly perennial species at your local nursery and well, out-of-sight is garden memory oblivion for these wonderful, reward-ing and highly fragrant plants!

I REALLY love it when perennials live up to my expecta-tions, last for at least several years and don’t die – don’t you? Here at the nursery, when we get all excited about a new plant we’ve raised from seeds or cuttings, the first thing we do is plant it in several places in the garden and a few sample pots. What we want to find out is this: will this new variety live through the Winter and bloom for a second season? Here in our mild and rainy Winter climate, this is a common reason why a perennial fails to thrive. I find that so many modern, newly introduced “perenni-als” out there in the garden market just don’t meet our mild-Winter test. Or they are wimpy new varieties quickly sent out into the marketplace (pumped up on fertilizers) to look extra bloomy in a 4” pot or gallon – the better for quick nursery sales! The thing is, I don’t believe anyone really tests them to see if they truly behave as perennials in all the diverse zoneage of the U.S.! So we buy them because they are sooo pretty and then find that they turn smooshy in the Winter or completely disappear. Our “gardener’s hope” kicks in and we tell our-selves, “Oh, it’s just being deciduous at the moment. It will

Just look at the amazing Dianthus on page 17. THAT is what a real Dian-thus looks like to me! These perenni-al species live for years in my garden. I don’t know how long they bloom in hotter climates but I do know they bloom Spring thru Fall here. My favorite, longest lived types are D. plumarius, carthusianorum and gratianopolitanus. And this is what you should know: Dianthus love really good drainage, so add in some lava rock or better, plant them on the

edge of your bed or on a slope. They are not fond of clay but love a little compost. Just a month or two after planting, they’ll burst into a stunning mass of flowers that lasts for months, especially if you cut off spent blooms. In Summer, they’ll go into a rest period unless you cut them back and give them a bit of compost around the base, whereupon they’ll burst forth with all those glorious blooms again! When they finish blooming at the end of Fall, you want to ruthlessly cut back the foliage and stems to no more than 3” tall and 10” across. Don’t worry – they’ll love you for it. In early Spring, give them a 1” dressing of good quality compost and they’ll return more beauteous then before. With proper care your Dianthus will live for years. Last year, while perusing Ebay, I bought some wonderful old mailorder catalogs (circa 1890–1930) that listed more than a hundred fascinating varieties of Dianthus, including vividly striped and polka-dotted “Carnations.” Sadly, almost all have been entirely lost to garden extinction. ‘Chomley Farran’ (p. 3) is reminiscent of these heirlooms that old time “florists” worked so hard to create. I felt so sad after reading about them, I began to worry that some of the varieties we now grow would face eventual disappearance as well. For example, look at this fabulous Dianthus superbus (top, left). When we ordered seed for it over the past few years, we received a totally wrong variety. Certainly NOT the lovely, deliciously scented and long lived species we were familiar with. In fact, it turned out to be an unscented annual often called “Rainbow Loveliness,” which is now being sold as the original perennial species. Luckily, our wonderful long-time propagator, Anni Jensen, still had one of our original mother plants stashed in a corner of the nursery. We now collect our own seed and feel confident we will be able to offer it again in the future. Another wonderful long lived perennial that seems to have lost its mojo to modern “improvements” is Aquilegia vulgaris or the common garden “Columbine.” Formerly 3’ tall x 2’ wide, they seem to have shrunk in both size and vigor. I could blather on about all the depressing details but suffice it say, we’re working on it! In the meantime, I highly recommend Aquilegia chrysantha, caerulea and caerula ‘Krystal’ (online and p. 5) as absolutely fabulous Columbines. Properly tall and highly floriferous with large, scented flowers, they’re certainly the lon-gest blooming, too. Almost to mid-Summer! And if you cut them back to 2” tall after bloom, you’ll often get a second flowering in Fall! Happily, they return reliably each Spring and also self-sow! Real perennials. YAY!

To all other states, we ship UPS 2nd Day Air to ensure plants arrive in excellent, disappointment-free condition. We strive to ship available plants within one day of your order (or the day you specify), Mon.-Wed. We cannot ship to P.O. boxes or outside the continental U.S. Hard goods ship separately via ground. Due to fluctuating fuel costs, carrier rates are subject to change and our rates may reflect these changes. In case of damage to a box: please do not refuse delivery. If there is damage, please contact us within 48 hours of arrival, although we may request you give the plants a chance to recover. If there is considerable damage, please contact us by email. Attaching a photo of the box and plants would be greatly appreci-ated! We can then take the necessary steps to make it right.

Polygonum orientale “Kiss Me Over the Garden Gate”Incredibly quick growing and easy-breezy, this 6’ x 5’, old-timey cottage classic can’t be beat for fast thrills! Tumbling off the ends of many arching, multi-branching stems, its vibrant, brightest-pink, bead-like flower clusters bob around in the breeze to provide movement and Sum-mertime fun! Scented and long bloom-ing, too. Handsome, large, heart-shaped leaves make it even more garden-worthy. Watch for next year’s volunteers when the weather warms up – you’ll have lots! Rich soil for best show! Sun/Part sun. Annual. All zones. #852 $4.95

Campanula persicifolia ‘Telham Beauty’Why has this enchanting cottage gar-den classic become so hard to find? Beautiful, 2-3” flaring bell-shaped flowers are held outwards from 3’ tall stems. Penstemon x gloxinioides ‘Thorn’Hooray! A long-lived and massive blooming Penstemon for our mild climate where, sadly, most Penstemons sputter out after a year or two. To 3’ x 3’, the bloom spikes come Spring thru Fall and I don’t mean a few spikes at a time. Lots – just like in this photo! Good-sized, white-blushed-pink trumpets and substantial rich green foliage looks super in mixed perennial and shrub gardens, even dry gardens! Side-dress with a little compost in Spring and Sum-mer and cut back spent spikes regularly. Deer resis-tant. Sun. Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 6-10. #2318 $7.95

Scabiosa atropurpurea ‘Florist’s Blue’Create a big display of these wonder-ful, rich lavender blooms. All you need is one plant to get at least a hundred of these sweetly scented 2” spherical “pincushions.” Not the commonly seen smaller, flatter flowered species, this variety was selected for its large, dense blooms. Long and sturdy branching stems make it the perfect cut flower machine! The more you cut, the longer it blooms. Or cut back to 6” for a second performance. Rich soil a must! Great habitat plant. Deer resistant and self-sows. Sun. Avg. water. Perennial USDA zones 9-11, annual elsewhere. #954 $6.95

Viscaria oculata ‘Blue Pearl’ I would be so sad if someone ever took my “German Catchfly” away! Impatiens sodenii ‘La Vida Rosa’ Like Impatiens ‘Madonna’ but with bright rosy cheeks! Just as easy, fast and problem solving, both may self-sow moderately so you can pass them on to friends with shady gardens. Here’s another reason I so appreciate these large Impatiens: I have a giant Magnolia grandiflora in my front yard that drops about 100 leaves a day. Nowadays, they fall thru the Impatiens foliage and remain nicely hidden from sight so I hardly ever have to clean them up! Yay! AM sun/Shade. Avg./Low water. I prune mine back to 3’ in Winter for extra bushiness. AM sun/Shade. Avg./Low water. Perennial USDA zones 9b -11, annual elsewhere. #1841 $9.95

“WOW!!! My order came yesterday afternoon. I unpacked it with some trepidation, as I have ordered from mail order nurseries many times and there is serious damage or puny plants at least half the time. No damage of any kind, even minor. No puny plants - in fact, they look to be on steroids! All 19 plants are as large and happy as if I just brought them home from a local nursery and hand-picked each one. Some are even nicer. With the cost of gas, I could order all my plants from you, and the cost would be pretty close. You gals ROCK!” –Pat. N, Orchards, WA

Poppies are easy! I love Poppies! Bringing such bright color and cheer to the Spring garden, Poppies are a cinch to grow and most self-sow to thrill us again and again each new season! With fabulous buds, some with amazing form and cool seed pods, they really are the superstars of my Spring garden. For best show do provide them with full sun, average water and rich soil and grow only the smaller ones in pots, as the taller ones want to be in the

ground. They are hardy annuals and do best when planted in cool weather, blooming in March, April and May. If you order late, do not despair! They will bloom, possibly with less flowers, but will self-sow providing you with lots of new babies next Spring!
