LAWMAKERS AGAINST CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM MAY HAVE NEW FOE
A new coalition, including former Federal Election Com-
mission Chairman Trevor Potter, Republican lobbyist-
turned-convicted felon Jack Abramoff, Theodore Roosevelt
IV, and representatives of both Occupy Wall Street and the
Tea Party have launched a campaign to push Congress to
overhaul campaign nance laws.
The twist? The group, Represent.us, rst plans to get 1
million signatures endorsing the proposals, and then plans
to wage campaigns against incumbents in 2014 who dont
sign onto the legislation.
Our hope is Congress will heed the call to action, said
Josh Silver, campaign director, on a conference call with
reporters today. But if they dont, we have plans for that
too. The campaign will actively work to unseat members
from both major parties.
The legislation, the American Anti-Corruption Act,
would prevent lawmakers from accepting donations from
lobbyists and special interests whose issues are before their
committees or subcommittees; limit donations to super-
PACs; require former lawmakers to wait ve years before
becoming lobbyists; mandate full disclosure of all dona-
tions to any group spending at least $10,000 on political
ads; and offering $100 tax rebates to small-dollar donors.

ACTIVISTS STUNT LIVENS UP A ROUTINE SENATE SESSION
There wasnt much to see in the State Senate on Wednes-
day: the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance, the honoring
of a basketball player and a bunch of empty seats where
elected representatives are paid to sit.
But there was something to grab the eye. Shortly after
the beginning of proceedings, about 15 protesters who
had posed as guests sitting in the upstairs gallery sud-
denly tossed hundreds of fake $100 bills onto the chambers
oor below, a prank meant to call attention to the issue of
campaign nance reform. The protesters made it through
a couple of rounds of chants What do we want? Fair
elections! before being asked to leave by the chambers
security guards.
Outside, one demonstrator, Josh Silver, said the protest was
intended to show that the states people wanted common-
sense reform to clean up New York.
The point is to tell Albany that the world is watching, Mr.
Silver said.
And sure enough, on the Senate oor, several amused sena-
tors took photos of the activists and scooped up the funny
money. Senator John A. DeFrancisco, a Republican from the
Syracuse area, even thanked the protesters for spicing up
another ho-hum day of lawmaking in front an otherwise
sparse audience.

The Republican Party once a proud bastion of civic andbusiness leaders who battled Southern racism, Northern
corruption and the evils of big government has for the
past several decades been itself the victim of political pro-

WE JUST DUMPED A BAG OF MONEY ON ACONGRESSMAN HERES WHY
Congressman Jim Himes has drawn the ire of a buddingAmerican anti-corruption movement. Not because he
broke any laws, but for something astonishingly legal: he
let lobbyists for his top donor, CitiGroup, write their own
Wall Street-friendly bill, and led it to passage in the U.S.
House over the last month.
