1. Prepare yourself for the drive.

•You get all of your things that you will need for the drive that you will going on. I find that having them laid out prior to leaving helps me visualize what is needed and I do not forget anything.

• If you are going on long trips it is always helpful to have a map of the route that you will be traveling and also have an idea of any alternate routes along the way.

•Lastly it is always a good idea to pre pack your vehicle before leaving, this will allow you to organize everything. I case of an emergency you will have an idea where everything is at.

• Oh yeah, do not forget you sunglasses for them sunny days.

2. Be familiar with the area that you are driving.

• With the invention of Google and Google Earth, this is very easy to do.

• Look around your destination area to help identify land marks and what the buildings look like.

• Follow the route that Google Maps lay out for you before you leave to have an idea what the roads and intersections look like.

3. Blind spots, How to improve them in our vehicle

Step 1: Start by setting your rear-view mirror as you normally would.

Then, lean your head all the way to the left so it touches the driver's window. From that position, set your left side-view mirror so you can see the back corner of your car. Now lean the same distance the other way, and set your right side-view mirror the same way. Now, here's what happens. When a car comes up behind you, you should first see it in your rear-view mirror. But as it passes you (let's say on your left), you'll see it move to the left side of your rear-view mirror. And as its left headlight disappears from your rear-view mirror, it should instantly show up in your left side-view mirror. There should be no delay. It should slip from one to the other, so you can always see it.

Step 2 - Left-Side Mirror Alignment: Set your left-side mirror so that as soon as the passing car's left, front headlight disappears from your rear-view mirror, it appears in your left-side mirror. You might need to make some slight adjustments to your side-view mirrors to make everything line up perfectly. And pulling up next to a line of parked cars (to simulate another lane of traffic next to you) is a good way to do that.

Step 3 - Right-Side Mirror Alignment: Then do the same thing on the right.

Step 4: End result? No huge blind spots.

Driving with the mirrors this way takes some getting used to. You have to learn to rely on your rear-view mirror first. And you'll have to get used to what your side-view mirrors are now looking at. But, the good news is that your blind spot should now be gone!

4. Equipment and tires. This is an important safety factor about your car, your car can only perform great when you have working equipment on your vehicle. The items that you need to monitor are:

Tires- make sure they have good tread on them and they are properly inflated.

Wiper blades – Make sure that they do not leave streaks on you windshield and do clean off the rain water

You may not believe it but having a clean windshield makes all the difference in the world. It is amazing how dirty the inside of the windshield gets.

5. Safe driving distance - The 2 second rule Use the time-lapse method to keep a safe distance behind the vehicle in front:

Pick a mark on the road or an object close to the left-hand side of the road, such as a power or light pole.

When the rear of the vehicle ahead passes the object, count ‘one thousand one, one thousand two’ (this takes about two seconds).

If the front of your vehicle passes the object before you finish counting, you are too close, so drop back.

6. Driving in inclimate weather When driving in weather that is not optimum it is always a good idea to slow down to a speed that you are comfortable with, not what the person behind you wants you to travel.

Always move to the right and let other people pass you.

Eliminate as many distractions as possible, this will help you focus on the road and the conditions that you are driving in.

7. Texting and driving. When you are driving at 60 mph in your car, you are traveling at 88 feet per second. In 3.73 seconds you have just traveled one city block.

It takes longer than 3.73 seconds to read a text.
