Welcome to the New Mother’s Resource Guide

We here at the New Mother’s Resource Guide believe a deeply felt sense of purpose in life leads to excellence. We all want to belong to something of significance and meaning.

Our goal: The goal of the New Mother’s Resource Guide is to strengthen the greater Seacoast community by making important connections between family and the local services available to them; two wonderful things happen as a result: families are empowered and local business prospers.

What we do: Every June we print an annual New Mother’s Resource Guide that is distributed throughout the greater Seacoast (FREE) at local businesses, area hospitals, town libraries, and doctors offices from York, ME to Newburyport, MA.

How we do it: The NMRG is created for and tailored to the needs of greater Seacoast families interested in the local services available to them. It is distributed directly to greater Seacoast families through our effective networking efforts.

Our purpose: The purpose of the New Mother’s Resource Guide is to promote the health and emotional wellbeing of pregnant women, new mothers, and families living in the greater Seacoast area.

Our mission: Our mission is to make a difference to greater Seacoast families by contributing to an important endeavor: connecting greater Seacoast families with the wonderful local resources around them.

"Women do not have to sacrifice personhood if they are mothers. They do not have to sacrifice motherhood in order to be persons.

Liberation was meant to expand women's opportunities, not to limit them. The self-esteem that has been found in new pursuits can also be found in mothering."

As you enjoy the resources within the NMRG, please know the NMRG does not endorse specific providers or businesses. It is incumbent upon all of us to ask questions of, research, and learn about the people we let into our pregnancy, birth and postpartum experiences. Please note: we do not have every greater Seacoast resource available in the NMRG, but we're striving to get there! As you might suspect, there are other resources available . We hope the resources available in the NMRG are sufficient to make your journey into motherhood a pleasurable learning experience.

Activities to Do with Your Baby/Child Pregnancy and postpartum are times of learning, adjustment, integration, and transformation. Parenting is an experience for which we receive little training and preparation yet it can be the most challenging, rewarding and intense experience of our lives. It truly takes a village of support for a family to thrive in this transition. Below are area activities to do with your baby to both learn something new, get involved in the community, meet other parents, or to simply venture out for fresh air.

"Motherhood brings as much joy as ever, but it still brings boredom, exhaustion, and sorrow too. Nothing else ever will make you as happy or as sad, as proud

or as tired, for nothing is quite as hard as helping a person develop his own individuality especially while you struggle to keep your own."

Obstetrics & Gynecology

In obstetric practice, an obstetrician or midwife sees a pregnant woman on a regular basis to check the progress of the pregnancy, to verify the absence of ex-novo disease, to monitor the state of preexisting disease and its possible effect on the ongoing pregnancy. A woman's schedule of antenatal appointment varies according to the presence of risk factors, such as diabetes, and local resources. Gynaecology or gynecology refers to the surgical specialty dealing with health of the female reproductive system (uterus, vagina and ovaries). Literally, outside medicine, it means "the science of women". (Definitions taked from: Wikipedia.)

Acupuncture is an ancient healing art that is now being used widely even within the

western medical world. Acupuncture can be used broadly to sustain or improve health during pregnancy and postpartum or for more specific circumstances such as encouraging labor to begin, turning a breech baby, lowering blood pressure, etc. Newborn and infant can also benefit by being treated via the mother or with acupuncture or tui na, a type of massage for such things as restlessness, allergies, colic, excess gas. Adopting a healthy eating plan before pregnancy is ideal, but no matter how many weeks are left on your countdown calendar, it’s never too late to start. Supplying your own body with a tasty blend of nutritious foods can not only improve your fertility, keep you feeling healthy during pregnancy, and pave the way for an easier labor, but it can also help to establish essential building blocks of growth and overall health for your child.

Breastfeeding Support

Mothers Groups/Wellness

The ancient and natural act of breastfeeding is not always simply begun. With the expert knowledge and resources of a lactation consultant, any bumps in the road can be smoothed so the experience is comfortable and beneficial for both mother and baby. In addition to the invaluable support of peers and family, it is important to make connections during pregnancy with La Leche League and mothers groups so the support is there when you need it after your baby arrives.

Breastfeeding Support Group at Anna Jaques Hospital: Twice a week at no charge and requires no pre-registration: Tuesdays, 10 - 11:45 a.m. Higgins Conference Room, Anna Jaques Hospital, Newburyport Thursdays, 10:30- 11:45 a.m. in Haverhill (2nd floor conference room above Children's Health Care, Central Plaza, Water St. Please call 978.463.1060 with any questions.

The benefits of Moms' groups are numerous and often overlooked. Some of the most important benefits are simply the emotional strength provided by having a support system. Joining a mother's group also has many great incentives with rewards that will last a lifetime. It can be difficult for new moms to find a network of confidants after dividing time between home, the many hat's we wear, partner and child. Below you will find mother's groups throughout the greater Seacoast.

Pregnancy and postpartum are immense life transitions that can cause you to lose perspective and your sense of self and question your identity and your path. Finding an objective, thoughtful and knowledgeable person to talk with can be crucial to your mental well-being. Depression and anxiety can occur at any time, including pregnancy and postpartum. Don’t be afraid to pick up the phone and make a connection with a mental health professional. Your emotional health is as important as your physical health.

Both Naturopathy and Homeopathy are based on the tendency of the body to heal itself. Both Homeopathic and Naturopathic physicians will search for and treat an underlying condition rather than a symptom in a way that supports the healing mechanisms of the body.

"Becoming a mother makes you the mother of all children. From now on each wounded, abandoned, frightened child is yours. You live in the suffering mothers of every race

and creed and weep with them. You long to comfort all who are desolate."

- Charlotte Gray

The doula’s role is to provide physical, emotional, and informational support to women and their partners during labor and birth. The doula offers help and advice on comfort measures such as breathing, relaxation, movement and positioning. Perhaps the most crucial role of the doula is providing continuous emotional reassurance and comfort for both the mother and partner. Postpartum, coming into the home during the fourth trimester- following birth- the doula’s role is to provide education, non-judgmental support and companionship, to assist with newborn care and family adjustment, meal preparation and light household tasks. Postpartum doulas are an extra pair of hands so you can focus on building strong bonds as a new family.
