Charles Ebbinghaus, a longtime Fairview volunteer, was the recipient of the 2016 Jacqueline B. Nixon Community Service Award for his many years of “Giving Back to the Community.” The award was presented by the City of Groton and Groton Utilities at the annual City of Groton Day celebration. As part of this recognition, Charlie was given the opportunity to have $1,000 donated to the charity of his choice and he chose Fairview. Congratulations Charlie and thank you for your commitment to Fairview and our residents!

Tricia Cunningham of Fairview Odd Fellows Home of Connecticut accepted a $5,000 check from Renée Fournier on behalf of the Chelsea Groton Foundation, the final installment of a $25,000 gift for the land development project.

Award-Winning Caregivers

C ongratulations to Elaine

Livingston and Herlande

Leriche for receiving the Excellence

in Caregiving Award from the

Alzheimer’s Association - CT

Chapter. Fairview was proud

to nominate both! Elaine’s

nomination read: “Elaine’s husband

was a resident in Fairview’s Guided

Journeys program. Despite all the

struggles that family caregivers

experience with dementia/

Alzheimer’s, Mrs. Livingston always

reached out to support others.

Unfortunately, Mr. Livingston

passed away this summer. Despite

her grief, Mrs. Livingston continues

to give back as a volunteer at

Fairview.”

Herlande Leriche has been a CNA

for two years in Fairview’s Memory

Care Program. She was nominated

because, “she takes the time to get

to know each resident individually

and treats them with respect and

dignity. Her co-workers admire her,

the family members and caregivers

appreciated her, and the residents

love her. Herlande is a true

champion and wonderful caregiver

for Fairview’s Alzheimer’s patients.”

Walk to End Alzheimer’sFairview is once a again a top fundraiser for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. This year, our team of 45 walkers raised over $7,000! As the number one fundraiser for last year’s event, “reigning champs” Fairview had the honor of cutting the ribbon. The Fairview team cheered on its CEO and Administrator James Rosenman as he cut the ribbon to kickoff the 2016 walk.

Fundraiser extraordinaire Michelle Doty

Fairview Medal Dinner (continued from cover)

Warren Smith and Marshall Kalin join the

distinguished ranks of past winners of the Fairview

Medal. This prestigious honor is given annually to two

individuals who have demonstrated an extraordinary

commitment to Fairview over an extended period of

time. These men and women have risen above their

peers by providing invaluable assistance to Fairview,

whether through personal effort, selfless gifts of time,

financial aid, or other behind-the-scenes involvement.

Without such people, Fairview could not maintain its

high level of excellence.

1 In addition to honoring these two individuals,

we were proud to present Fairview’s Community

Partner Award. This award is given to a business or

organization in the region that has consistently offered

its support to Fairview. Fairview presented this award to

Stonington Odd Fellows Lodge #26 I.O.O.F. as they

have been a steadfast supporter of Fairview and our

residents.

2 This year the Kalin Scholarship was presented at

the dinner. The Kalin Scholarship was started by

Marshall Kalin in honor of his wife, Edith Kalin, and

may be awarded to a Fairview staff member who has

been with Fairview for two years or more and is enrolled

in an LPN, RN, or BSN Program at any accredited

college or university. This year’s recipient was Brittany

Schmoegner.

3 Fairview also recognized five longstanding staff

members for their years of commitment to

Fairview with the Longevity Award:

• Cynthia Mantle – 26 years

• Maligwas McGillivray – 23 years

• Susana Darigan – 23 years

• Arlene Savago – 21 years

• Janine West – 19 years

These five staff members had a combined total of 112

years of service to Fairview and its residents.

Fairview greatly appreciates the commitment from its

dedicated staff and the continued efforts from the

Community Partner Award recipient Stonington Odd

Fellows Lodge #26 and the honored Fairview Medal

recipients Warren Smith and Marshall Kalin. Their

collective dedication and service to Fairview have been

an inspiration.

Top to bottom: 1) Thank you to the Navy Active Service Members who took time out of their schedules to join our Veteran’s Day Luncheon. We thank all our service members, past and present, for their service. 2) Monthly painting parties are a hit. Fairview has some wonderfully talented residents! 3) Fairview resident, Ray Welch, had a private concert from the United States Coast Guard’s Dixie Land Band. He even played a few tunes with them!

Fairview, Odd Fellows Home of CT was a proud sponsor of the CT Sub Trail, a public art project that tied the community together by celebrating 100 years of the submarine industry in Connecticut. The CT Sub Trail showcased a fleet of 21 fiberglass submarine sculptures designed and created by regional artists and placed throughout Southeastern Connecticut.
