The effects of urbanization and continuous cultural shift increase the ecological footprint of cities. In order to confront growing energy needs, cities and their necessary infrastructural systems expand into the suburbs and occupy a huge amount of space. Within the last few years, Bologna has also faced these problems and seems lagging behind because of its inability to keep up with the needs of cultural shifts and emerging technologies.

This project aims to tackle this issue and halt this negative cycle of expansion through filling the urban gaps and rejuvenating the reformist/avant-garde “nature” of the city by creating an “alternative infrastructure”. In the city of Bologna, which is famous for its medieval towers, the project introduces a new infrastructural system based on a triad of networks: canals, green, and towers. The tower removes all the functions from the ground and tries to investigate controversial “architectural spaces and urban typologies” by superimposing the living environment with the hard infrastructure, in order to force architects and society to face the real problems and increase their awareness about environmental issues. The architectural center of the city is the first implementation of this system and the goal is to create a type of museum that celebrates the environment, infrastructure, architecture and innovation. The contrasting characteristics between hard (where resources are generated) and soft infrastructure (where resources are distributed), Fiera District and the old city are used as a tool and program for the transformation process and upcoming developments. The reinvention of towers in this project creates a basis for responsive infrastructural movement in the city. Calling for the Modernist dream, it leaves the ground as green spaces and water.

BOLOGNA CENTER OF ARCHITECTURE

LIVING WITH THE INFRASTRUCTURE

Over a long period, Bologna has been one of the most significant cities of Italy and Europe with its history, culture, economy and architecture. Similarly, Fiera District of Bologna remains one of the largest fairgrounds in Europe, with buildings from Leonardo Benevolo, Kenzo Tange and Le Corbusier. However, within the last few years, Bologna seems stagnant, because of its inability to keep up with emerging technologies and industries.

Although the project criticizes the recent architecture and industry of the city, it takes lessons from the city and its history to promote forgotten and outstanding characteristics of the city. Important moments, events and eras are analysed to understand the gaps between past and future.

KEYSPACES OF THE OLD FABRIC I OLD CITY

KEYSPACES OF THE new FABRIC I FIERA

CITY OF CONTRASTS

The diagram shows the expansion of the city's ecological footprint taking place in the suburbs, defined as hard infrastructure. In order to sustain the city's booming growth and needs, the hard infrastructure of the suburbs perpetually expands.

The approach of this project eliminates the demand for suburb dependency. The ecological demands of the city are integrated into the urban fabric by juxtaposition of hard and soft infrastructure to create inhabitable infrastructures. Canals, green spaces and towers can be regenerated with this new typology. This exposure to the people aims to help citizens realize their own personal impacts on the environment.

Sections taken from various points in the city are used as a tool for understanding the key spaces, forgotten values and characters of two contrasting parts of the city: the old city and fair area. These characteristics between hard and soft infrastructure; old and new are used as a tool and program for the transformation process and upcoming developments. Formation, relational and outstanding characters of the old city program is implemented onto the fair area to transfer the same character and scale of the city into new spaces. The soft program of the building is inherited from the special reference point of the old city and juxtaposed with the hard infrastructure in the towers. The presence of towers in the city has symbolic and functional meanings and therefore the regeneration of them creates a metaphor between the genius loci and spirit of time.

BOLOGNA CITY OF CONTRASTS

Bologna is a City of towers but most of the towers are currently not functional. City of canals but canals are mostly underground and not visible. City of green areas but green areas are not well-connected. City of agriculture but fields are under the threat of occupation. City of exhibition but lacks a spirit of innovation and creation. City of transportation but mostly based on conventional systems.

Biomass power plant contains exhibition and social space to relate production process and products.

The pathways connect the building with both the users and the infrastructure. Some are elevated while others create bridges across the waterways.

Interior gallery is like a vertical street from bottom to top that all the functions and people can interact with in.

The Algae Center/Lab contains an algae cultivation space that is integrated with an interdisciplinary research space for sustainable architectural solutions.

Platform for knowledge through meetings, readings, research and lectures.

The Drinking Pod serves as a social space where people can relax while the city water is being purified at the same time.

Not only a space for exhibitions of the products but also shows the spirit and process of creation.

Entrance Platforms are composed of multiple levelled pathways which connects the building to city from varying levels.

Pathways

The design approach through the building is a good platform to demonstrate innovative applications of architecture and engineering. The infrastructural system of the towers is a synthesis of broader functional/environmental technologies and implementations. Three important system are integrated and interrelated with each other in a loop of infrastructure in the building: Water treatment plant, biomass power plant and micro algae bioreactors.

The spaces of program and mechanical equipment is inter-linked with the intention to strengthen the synergies between the hard and soft infrastructures into the building. The interior gallery is planned like a vertical street that links all this infrastructure from the building from bottom to the top.

The water treatment plant serves to clean underground and canal waters. The plant is integrated into the eating/ drinking platforms and water treatment bar within the building.

Micro algae cultivation systems are located in research labs, which promotes the investigation of alternative sources of energy for the city.

The biomass power plant contains exhibition space to establish a relationship between the production process and end-products. With the same idea, the model exhibition space is designed in relation to workshops and robotic production.
