The Offshore Wind Industry Worldwide : History last 20 years and Near Future Next 4 years
Global Offshore Wind Industry in an important (or critical?) phase
1991 – 2011 in total 3.8 GW grid connected - mainly in Denmark and UK - mainly near shore, shallow water, 2 MW - 3 MW turbines
2012 – 2015 roughly 12 GW under credible development or order - this is a 15 times faster pace than in the first 20 years - thereof :
1/3 will be in the UK and 1/3 will be in Germany 1/3 will be in the rest of world and 2/3 have secured financing already in place 1/3 so far have not secured financing yet

AC : Alternating Current + Good for shorter distances and smaller capacities + Well proven + Delivery times of 18-24 Months + Relatively inexpensive - Higher grid losses, impossible for larger distances DC: Direct Current + Solution for larger distances and high power output + Minimal losses, unavoidable for larger distances - New technology, especially offshore - Limited suppliers (Siemens, ABB and only soon Alstom) - Long delivery times of currently > 60 months
