During the late summer months, I was privileged to lead several of WLP’s “Sing the Seasons” choral reading sessions around the country. One of the pieces that was sung at these sessions was Trevor Thomson’s Where Charity and Love Abide (008076, $1.40). The keyboard arrangement by Ed Bolduc sparkles! Scored for two-part choir, cantor, assembly, guitar, and keyboard, this is a very simple setting of this beloved text. The refrain begins in Latin (Ubi Caritas . . . ) and concludes with the English text. The verses are sung by a cantor, with an optional descant “ooed” over the verses, which is actually the melody of the refrain. This is a worthy addition to your repertoire, particularly suited to the preparation of the gifts and the washing of the feet on Holy Thursday.

Draw Us in the Spirit’s Tether (008939, $1.65). I have long been fond of Percy Dearmer’s text, but have always associated it with “Union Seminary”, as most surely do. Bob Moore has penned a splendid setting for SAB choir and descant. The keyboard writing creates a superb structure for the vocals and allows the listener to hear with ease and reflect on the text. The Alleluias at the end of each verse are a delight, with their sixteenth-note rhythm and fresh harmonic direction. With all the Eucharistic references in the text, this choice will fit well in the Easter season and beyond.

LA SEÑAL DE LA CRUZ (1)El catorce de septiembre celebramos la fiesta de la Exaltación de la Santa Cruz, “exaltar” significa “realzar los

méritos”. Durante la Semana Santa miramos la cruz como un símbolo del sufrimiento y muerte de Jesús. La fecha del catorce de septiembre es cuando se dedica un día para venerarla de manera especial, pues nos recuerda cómo sufrió y en donde murió Jesús además en donde nos prometió una nueva vida. Hoy levantamos en alto la cruz, nuestro símbolo cristiano, para mostrar nuestro amor, fe y especialmente nuestra esperanza. Tú también puedes venerar la cruz en tu casa al ponerla en una mesa con una Biblia y una veladora. Decora la mesa con flores y úsala como el centro donde tu familia pueda rezar.

Durante la Misa la señal de la cruz se hace en diferentes momentos de la celebración, a esta forma de hacer la señal de la cruz se llama santiguarse. Pon atención para ver si puedes identificar estos cuatros momentos cuando el sacerdote se santigua. Hay dos pistas esta semana y la semana entrante habrá dos pistas más.

2. El segundo momento es justo antes de la proclamación del Evangelio. El sacerdote o el diácono hacen una cruz en su frente, en la boca y en el pecho. También nosotros hacemos lo mismo. Aunque él dice unas palabras que no escuchas dice: “que la Palabra de Dios esté en mi mente, en mi boca y en mi corazón”. También podemos decir esas mismas palabras. Estas cruces tienen un significado importante. ¡Pon atención a este momento! Dibuja una cruz en el sacerdote, en su frente, su boca y su corazón.

Después de la procesión de entrada y al iniciar la Misa, el sacerdote saluda, él se santigua e invita a la asamblea a hacer lo mismo diciendo las siguientes palabras “en el nombre del Padre y del Hijo y del Espíritu Santo”.
