•The Wishing-well is an interactive sound installation that will utilise the Internet as its main interface between users and content•Once enough content has been generated by online users, the sound clips will be installed for playback at specific public sites•This will mainly be done by myself, but participants will have the option of creating their own sound installations at sites of their choice•The installations will be documented (pictures/movie clips) and posted back to the website
Project idea
Collaborative partnerships
Rat Western
• Studied BA (Fine Art) at Wits• Went on to do her MA in Interactive Media Design• Now manages the Bag Factory• Does web design• Has a thorough understanding of the Wishing-well
project both technically and conceptually, and will therefore be able to make a valuable contribution to the research, development and implementation of the piece
• Will be largely responsible for web development, but will no doubt contribute to all areas of the project as a whole
Machfeld
• Based in Vienna, Austria• Interested in setting up The Wishing-
well in and around Vienna, and combining voice recordings from Austria and South Africa for their exhibition in Graz in December
Concept
• Blurring the boundaries between user and artist
• As in the case of Vectorial Elevation, the idea behind The Wishing-well is to let online users (i.e. people who are not necessarily adept at programming) dictate the development of the project
• Even though the actual execution of the piece takes place in real time at specific locations, the content will be generated through web-based technology
Instructions on the website:1. Make a wish 2. Record your wish 3. Post it to the site 4. Access other people’s wishes recorded on the same day as your own, and mash up your unique version of the perfect wish (Make sure the final version is between 1 minute and 1.30 minutes long) 5. Upload your mash-up 6. The following day, your mash-up – together with everyone else who had made one on the same day – will be part of the installation
• The final mash-up:
• Possible sites for playback
QuickTime™ and aYUV420 codec decompressor
are needed to see this picture.
- Public drinking fountains
- Swimming pools
- Bathrooms
Research and development
Technical aspects• Creating audience awareness (email
and Facebook)• Web development• Streamlining user-interaction (both
online and during the recording/editing process)
• Finding the cheapest and most secure way of setting up the installation
Project plan
• Preliminary testing of audience response (done)
• Dividing tasks between Rat and myself (done)• Website up and running (9/10)• Generating online content (10/10 - 10/11 and
beyond)• Monitor and manage website (daily)• Set up installation (daily or weekly -
depending on the level of response) • Documentation (ongoing until 15/11)
