OKOTOKS CULTURE PROGRAM GUIDE3
By isolating the subject matter, Rushfeldt
captures the magical and intense energy
in the ordinary and discarded, while the
charcoal evokes a quiet and somewhat
moody atmosphere, creating a sense
of richness, texture and density. The
individual characters and stories behind
each drawing are hinted at but remain
private. The subject matter is often worn
and weathered, damp and moss covered,
and she works to capture the senses of
isolation and protection that she feels.
OPENING RECEPTIONFriday, January 10 | 7:00 to 9:00 pm
EXHIBIT-RELATED PROGRAMSOK.CLUB @ OAG | $10 registration feeExploring Charcoal Drawing for Beginners 42056 Saturday, Jan 11 | 1:30 to 3:00 pm
In this series of charcoal drawings, Debra
Rushfeldt has created an intimate,
subjective portrait of the unique rural
neighbourhood of Crescent Bay, Nakusp,
B.C. Initially, through exploring her
neighbours’ properties, Rushfeldt was
motivated by the surprise of her discoveries
and the challenge of the charcoal medium.
Eventually the work made her look inward
and the connection to the subject matter
became emotionally biographical; Rushfeldt
discovered the values of rural life including
issues of privacy, preservation and seclusion
as well as contrasting themes in everyday
life – creation and decay, connection and
isolation, potential and loss.

The subject matter of special interest to
Pyra are the places of comfort and refuge
(some now abandoned) in which travellers
find themselves – service stations, fast
food restaurants and service vehicles.
With the very rapid social movement
in Alberta, many of the establishments
represented in Pyra’s paintings have
disappeared or are undergoing major
change; this is particularly the case in
rural Alberta from which there has been
significant migration to cities. Pyra’s
paintings represent the contemporary
and historic culture of southern Alberta;
but he fears for the continued vibrancy
in these small prairie towns. As such,
this exhibition is a celebration of these
towns and communities and their cultural
contribution to our province of Alberta.
OPENING RECEPTION Friday, January 10 | 7:00 to 9:00 pm
Greg Pyra’s oil paintings represent a
cohesive body of work, spanning two
years of his artistic career. In this series,
Pyra imagines himself as a traveller on
the highways of Alberta, with no end
destination in mind; the journey is the
object of destination. This type of travel
throughout Alberta is a metaphor for the
spiritual journey that we all undertake in
life. The paintings represent moments of
harmony with self and the environment,
and a core inner peace. To Pyra, the ideal
time for moments such as these is just after
sunset when the day is not yet complete
and night has not yet fallen.

This group exhibition is a collaboration
among art students from both of Okotoks
high schools – the Alberta High School of

and Holy Trinity Academy. The exhibition
showcases the wide assortment of talents
that the students possess. They demon-
strate a vast array of styles and mediums
from photorealism drawings to abstract
paintings, and mixed media collage to
found-object sculpture. This exhibition
gives students a unique opportunity to
gain valuable experience through
exhibiting their work in a professional
art gallery setting, as well as to give our

An Alberta Aviary Erika Schulz Feb 28 to April 19 | Small Gallery
OPENING RECEPTIONFriday, February 28 | 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm
EXHIBIT-RELATED PROGRAMSOK.CLUB @ OAG | $10 registration feeBirds on a Wire 42060 Saturday, Mar 1 | 1:30 to 3:00 pm
In 2009 Erika Schulz challenged herself
to create one piece of art every day. An
Alberta Aviary ended up being one of
the series that she worked on during that
year. Each painting has a strong Arts and
Crafts influence, as well as an injection
of Japanese aesthetic. Her drawing with
paint technique was originally inspired by
the mixed media gesso panels of Margaret
MacDonald-Mackintosh, wife of Art
Nouveau artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
The surface of Schulz’s paintings are built
up by drawing a line of paint into patterns
and objects, which are then painted,
creating a layered, textured effect. The
Aviary depicts a spectrum of native Alberta
birds - some that Schulz sees every day and
other that she wishes to see. They range
from song birds and farm fowl, to raptors
and scavengers, big and small.

In-Definite Arts Society provides
opportunities to artists with developmental
disabilities, enabling them to develop
and express themselves in a supportive
environment. In 2012, over 150 artists with
disabilities participated in a workshop with
Adele Woolsey, creating a stunning array
of artworks, exploring texture and pattern
through painting with Venetian plaster.

April 25 to June 15 | Small gallery
Elaine Funnell’s watercolour and graphite
paintings focus on native Alberta plants.
Preferring to work from life using
watercolour, Funnell captures the fine
detail of these plants, blending the fine art
and science reminiscent of the early 18th
century botanical illustrators. The addition
of small insects create a more whimsical,
even playful element in the exhibition.

Exhibits have also been expanded into the
attic, resulting in displays on all three levels
of the museum. One of the oldest artifacts
from the education collection is featured
in the new attic display. It is a beautiful
turn-of-the-century wooden washing
machine and wringer. This ‘modern’ piece
of technology was a big step up from
the gruelling washboard. Oh, how times
have changed! Attic displays also feature
exhibits on early telephone communication
and entertainment.
STORIES OF OKOTOKSPermanent exhibit
This permanent exhibit explores Okotoks’
special landscape, compelling characters
and bright future. Photos and artifacts
help bring to life the stories of the town’s
rich natural and cultural heritage, with
a focus on early immigration, domestic
life, education and commerce. Connect to
Okotoks’ history and discover some of the
fascinating people who have helped make
Okotoks the dynamic town it is today.
Two of the exhibit rooms – the kitchen
and school room -- have been enhanced
with motion sensor audio. This allows
the museum to incorporate sound clips
from its women’s oral history project
of which many of the participants have
since passed away. Museum visitors can
now hear these women’s voices as they
share their compelling stories of growing
up in Okotoks.

Treasures from theCollections
TREASURES FROMTHE MUSEUM COLLECTIONOne of the showpieces of the museum’s
artifact collection is the model of a cable
tool rig built by Garnet Edwards. Garnet
was born in Manitoba in 1916 and moved
with his family to Okotoks in 1929. In 1931
he started driving truck in the oilfields
which began a 47-year career in the
oilpatch. Over that period he worked as a
tool dresser, roughneck, welder and in 1941
he became the second youngest driller
in Canada. He worked in Turner Valley,
Longview, Leduc, Edmonton, Drayton
Valley, Swan Hills and Trinidad. Garnet was
inducted into Canadian Petroleum Hall of
Fame in 1997.
It is a large, working model of a cable tool
rig reflecting the style of the Ranchman’s
well, which used to stand on Gladys Ridge
near Aldersyde. Garnet donated the model
to the museum in 2002 and was the fifth
working model of a cable tool rig that he
had built.
TREASURES FROMTHE ARCHIVAL COLLECTION When oil was discovered in Turner Valley
in 1914, Okotoks soon established itself
as the ‘gateway’ to the oilfields. As the
closest railhead to Turner Valley, Okotoks
became the major supply centre for the
new industry. The Okotoks Museum and
Archives’ photo and newspaper collections
document the role Okotoks played in the
early heyday of the oilfields. Photographs
show local teamsters, and later truckers
and tractor operators, hauling the heavy
loads of equipment from Okotoks to the
oilfields. The Okotoks Review promptly
added ‘and Oilfields Record published in
the heart of Alberta’s oilfields’ to its flag
and filled its pages with news stories about
the tremendous impact the discovery had
on the district.
