A Celebration ofFestivals and Events
WICKLOW 2013
“Welcome to Wicklow, the Garden of Ireland”www.visitwicklow.ieAttractions . Activities . Events . Accommodation Food & Drink . Shopping . Services . Offers
It is a pleasure to warmly welcome you to Wicklow for the Gathering 2013. Over the past months communities from all parts of the county have come together to organise gatherings, conferences, festivals and events to celebrate everything that Wicklow has to offer.
In 2012 Wicklow won first place and the gold award at the world LivCom awards. This reflected not only the landscape of Co. Wicklow as one of mountains, rolling foothills, forests, coastline and lakes - all with magnificent views and the rich heritage of the county; but also our wonderful community spirit. It is this community spirit that awaits our visitors this year. Our events embrace every part of our social identity from our heritage to our music, from the arts to sport.
Our three flagship festivals for the Gathering – the Greystones Arts Festival over the June Bank Holiday, Hollywood Fair in August and Canada Come Home in September will indeed carry the flag for the county but this does not detract from the other wonderful vibrant events that are taking place throughout the year.
It has been a pleasure for the council to work with Fáilte Ireland, Wicklow Tourism, County Wicklow Partnership and the Wicklow Gathering Steering Committee. I would like to thank Brendan Martin, Head of Library Services in Wicklow who has spearheaded this initiative for the county.
I wish every success to all the Gatherings in Wicklow but most importantly we wish all our visitors a wonderful stay in our Garden County and hope you have a very memorable experience.

The Hollywood Fair14th - 18th AugustHollywoodOrganised on the theme of the Gathering and reaching out to emigrants overseas the 2013 Fair promises to be even better than previous years. The pre-1950s rural heritage theme of the Fair has proved a real hit with people. Dressed in pre-1950s attire the large attendance will be in festive mode as they make their way by pony and trap, vintage vehicles, bikes and shank’s mare to the fair from Friday to Sunday. The whole community dresses up for this festival!
Witness the re-enactment of a Famine Eviction scene from the 1840s. Among the items on display will be vintage cars and farm machinery. There will be exhibitions of the traditional crafts of blacksmithing, stonecutting, wood-turning and butter making. The indoor handicrafts displayed will include spinning, knitting and sewing. Storytelling, fortune-telling and matchmaking are just some of the other items on offer. Beidh céad míle fáilte rompu abhaile.

In 1946, after the WW2, hundreds of German children were brought to Ireland by the Irish Red
Cross to be fostered by Irish families for up to three years. The project was called Operation
Shamrock and the former Boys’ Reformatory School at Glencree was used as a reception and settling-in centre for the children. Glencree, along with the German Embassy in Dublin and the Irish Red Cross will host a

TheLa ToucheFamily in Ireland
TheL
aToucheFam
ily in Ireland
David La Touche, fleeing from religious persecution
in France, fought with William of Orange at the
Boyne in 1690. His descendants made a major
contribution to Ireland as bankers, property developers and
extensive landlords. They were especially active in politics
around the period of the Act of Union in 1800 and they had
a genuine devotion to the Church of Ireland.
This book takes the reader inside the La Touche family and
explores how early financial foundations were laid, leading
to enormous wealth, grand country estates and elaborate
town houses in St Stephen’s Green. The La Touches
dominated Irish banking for over 150 years: David III was
the first Governor of the Bank of Ireland set up in 1783.
Family letters and diaries provide insights into what the
family was like. Alongside the good times there were scandals
and crises – David IV got into serious debt; his daughter
married a bishop but had an affair with William Lamb,
Lord Melbourne; Charles John became a Roman Catholic
in 1844; the wealthy John of Harristown became a Baptist
in 1863 to the chagrin of his superior wife; their daughter
Rose got mixed up in a hopeless love affair with the sage,
John Ruskin.
The La Touche Family in Ireland is an informative and
entertaining account one of Ireland’s greatest business
families.
Michael McGinley retired from the
Irish public service at the age of
fifty-two and made a second career
at business and university level in
the field of industrial relations. He
has carried out extensive research
into the La Touche family.

Wicklow Peace and Remembrance Gathering 30th June Wicklow [email protected]
