An Introduction To WHI
4
WHI has built its success and reputation upon dedication to high standards of quality and service. Recognizing the need for a greater variety of mouldings, custom millwork and high-quality stair parts in the market, WHI has filled this void by stocking a wide variety of top-quality, custom-designed mouldings, popular styles of doors, stair parts and dimensioned lumber.
Products formerly available only through custom order are now priced and dispatched as stock products. A special millwork department is also geared to produce custom products in nearly the same time as stock deliveries. Combine all of this with personalized service that includes individual sales, onsite pricing, footage estimates and design consultation. It is obvious why WHI has enjoyed healthy, continuous growth since its establishment in 1985.
WHI is continuing to grow; this is reflected in the 30,000 square foot addition to our manufacturing facility, a 2,000 square foot addition to our corporate office, a 25,000 square foot expansion in our pre-hung door department and expanding our number of warehouses to 12 total.
Campbellsville, Kentucky is home to our corporate and operations office along with our main warehousing and manufacturing facilities. Currently our satellite warehouses are in a four state area (Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana and Ohio) and have Account Executives available to assist you. The warehouses are located in: Campbellsville, Bowling Green, Lexington, Louisville, Richmond and Walton in Kentucky; Evansville and Indianapolis in Indiana; Dayton and Cincinnati in Ohio; and Brentwood and Hendersonville in Tennessee.
We accept the responsibility to create added value for those who entrust us with their business or home. We strive to effectively meet our customers’ ever-changing needs. WHI realizes we must consistently meet the demanding guidelines for quality and service that we developed many years ago and our customers have come to expect.
Wholesale Hardwood Interiors strives to exceed your expectations in quality, service and integrity.

How to Lay Out A Stair in 30 Seconds
1. First, determine the floor-to-floor dimension from the plans or field measurements.
2. Divide the floor-to-floor dimensions by 8.*
3. Round the answer up to the next whole number (this is the minimum number of total risers in the proposed stair).
4. Subtract one from the number of risers calculated in step 3 (this is the minimum total number of treads in the proposed stair).
5. Multiply 13 by the number of risers calculated in step 3 (this is the approximate length, in inches, of the stringer and skirtboard needed for the stair).
6. Multiply 13 by the number of treads calculated in step 4 (this is the minimum length, in inches, of the handrail or shoerail).
7. Multiply 10 by the number of risers calculated in step 3 (this is the minimum run of the stair).
8. Add 12” to the run calculated in step 7 to allow for the lug at the top of the stair and for trim at the bottom of the stair (total space requirement for the run or horizontal length of the stair).
9. Headroom: determine how many risers will be located under the ceiling instead of under the well. With an 8’ ceiling, there can only be two risers outside the well; with a 9’ ceiling, there can be three and in a 10’ ceiling, there can be four. If there are more, then a headroom problem is likely.

Cman Stair Building GuideEach indexed chapter of this guide visually deals with one segment of the stair installation process. Dozens of photographs cover each section in depth, allowing you to see actual job site conditions at each stage of the installation process. This book measures 7-1/4” x 9” and includes reference charts, step-by-step photos, in-depth details and is clearly written for both the beginning carpenter and experienced stair installer to understand. Chapters covered in the book include: stair basics, part information, rough stair, stair body, balustrade layout, newels, rails and fittings, baulsters, curved rail, wonderail, forged and hardware. A reference and index section are also included.
10. To double check that your stair meets prevailing* code guidelines, divide the floor-to-floor dimensions by the number of risers calculated in step 3. If that dimension is more than 7-3/4,” add one riser and adjust the rest of the calculations accordingly.
*Check local code for maximum/minimum rise and adjust calculations accordingly. It is easier to round up to a whole number when dividing to avoid dividing by fractions.
This is not the only way to calculate dimensions for a stair; this is just a quick way to determine the minimum stair to fit the floor-to-floor dimension and allows you to determine space and headroom problems immediately.
NOTE: The tips above are intended as information only and no attempt is made to represent or imply any codes. Code information and enforcement are the sole responsibility of the stair builder and local code officials and WHI is not responsible for the use of any of this information in any application.
