cholesterol from being absorbed by the body through food.

Cancer: Alfalfa can serve an important role in counteracting the negative effects of chemotherapy used to treat cancers. The body’s first lines of defense against infection are white blood cells, such as granulocytes, leukocytes, and T cells. During the chemotherapy treatment process, white blood cell count can be lowered, thus putting the body at risk for neutropenia—a condition caused by a reduced white blood cell count that makes the body more susceptible to infection, disease, and death. Studies have shown alfalfa to increase white blood cell count by as much as 60%.

Diabetes: Some diabetics do not respond well

to insulin, making their condition difficult to manage and control.

Studies have shown that those with diabetes who do not respond to

• Intestinal ulcers• Gastritis• Liver disorders• Hemorrhoids• Bleeding gums• Asthma• Eczema • Constipation• Body and breath odor• Infections• Burns• Athletes foot• Cancer • Urinary tract problems• Bowel problems

Alfalfa can help with…Atherosclerosis: Various scientific studies have shown that alfalfa leaf extracts can help to lower cholesterol levels as well as shrink athero-sclerotic plaque. Immune system cells known as macrophages can lodge them-selves in the arterial lining and accumulate cholesterol. Alfalfa helps to regulate the immune system cells, making them less likely to get “lodged” in the arterial lining. Alfalfa also helps prevent

For nearly 1,500 years, cultures all over the world have been using alfalfa as a herbal remedy for many illnesses. The herb is believed to have originated from the Middle East where the Arabs referred to it as “the father of all foods” as they knew it was useful in a variety of forms. Physicians in early Chinese cultures used young alfalfa leaves in the treatment of digestive and kidney disorders. It was also believed to be useful in arthritis patients. Although the herb originated in the Middle East, it appeared in the thirteen colonies in 1736 and was used by the English and Americans to treat upset stomach. Generally consumed in sprout, tea, or supplement form, alfalfa is rich in protein, calcium, minerals, and vitamins A, B, C, D, E and K, it can be helpful in aiding in various illnesses and ailments including:

• Anemia• Diabetes• Indigestion and bladder disorders• Menopause• Poor lactation• High blood pressure

Iron is one of the most abundant minerals on earth, and it is essential for normal human physiological functions. It is part of many different proteins and enzymes that are necessary to maintain proper health. Iron is involved in the transportation of oxygen throughout the body, and aids in cell growth. Over 200 billion red blood cells are produced by your body every day. Every second, nearly 2.5 million new red blood cells are released into the blood stream.

Iron is a structural component of hemoglobin, an essential protein that carries vital oxygen from lungs to tissues in the body. Nearly two-thirds of the body’s iron is found in hemoglobin. Without the benefits of iron, the body could not function properly. Poor health and an impaired immune system could lead to serious illness.

The World Health Organiza-tion believes that a deficiency of iron is the number one nutritional disorder in the world. WHO estimates that nearly 80% of the world’s population suffers from some type of iron deficiency. Of those 80%, 30% are estimated to have iron deficiency anemia, an advanced stage of iron depletion. Low dietary iron intake, inadequate absorption of iron, and excessive blood loss can all lead to iron deficiency anemia. At greatest risk for this disorder are women of child-bearing age, pregnant women, pre-term or low birth weight infants, older infants and toddlers, and teenage girls.

Signs of Iron Deficiency: • Feeling tired and weak

• Decreased work and school performance

• Slow cognitive and social development during childhood • Difficulty maintaining body

insulin, see an improvement in their condition when taking alfalfa in conjunc-tion with manganese.

Endometriosis:Many doctors treat endometriosis

(growth of endometrial cells outside of the uterus), by prescribing birth control pills. However, naturopaths have found that herbs containing phytoestrogens (naturally occurring plant hormones related to estrogen, but less potent) can help to block the body’s estrogen receptor sites, thus reducing the effects of the woman’s own hormones.

Menopause-related symptomsWomen who consume legumes with

mild estrogenic activity (such as black beans, mung beans and soy beans) are less likely to have hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. Phytoestrogens included in alfalfa (another plant with mild estrogenic activity) are also known to help reduce the risk of estrogen-linked cancers such as breast cancer by prevent-ing tumors of the breast tissue.

NosebleedsPeople with reoccurring nosebleeds

may have a vitamin k deficiency. Alfalfa contains just enough vitamin K to help the blood clot normally without interfer-ing with normal circulation.

OsteoporosisAlfalfa is rich in many

vitamins, including vitamin K (also plentiful in leafy green vegetables such as kale and spinach). Vitamin K can help prevent bone loss caused by estrogen deficiency. As vitamin K interacts with vitamin D (also found in alfalfa) it helps increase the formation of new bone. In addition, alfalfa is a good source of calcium. One serving of alfalfa supplements can include 330mg. of calcium—as much as a glass of milk!

UlcersBioflavonoids found in

alfalfa build capillary strength and reduce inflammation of the stomach lining. Vitamin A found in alfalfa also helps to maintain stomach health,

while enzymes aid in food absorption.

cocoa—the main ingredient in dark chocolate. Cocoa has two times the number of anti-oxidant qualities as red wine, and three times the amount of anti-oxidant qualities of green tea.

A study lead by Dr. Mary Engler, PhD, RN and a team of medical experts at the University of California, San Francisco, divided 21 healthy adults into two separate groups. One group received a Dove dark chocolate bar every day for two weeks. The other group also received chocolate bars; however, this group’s chocolate had the flavonoids removed. After the two weeks, the first group performed better in tests to see

how well their blood vessels dilated and relaxed. This is an

indicator of healthy blood vessel function. Blood tests indicated that those who had

eaten the flavonoid rich

chocolate bars had high levels of epicatechin running through their arteries.

In a news release, Engler commented: "This is the longest clinical trial to date to show improvement in blood vessel function from consuming flavonoid-rich dark chocolate daily over an extended period of time. It is likely that the elevated blood levels of epicat-echin triggered the release of active substances that ... increase blood flow in the artery. Better blood flow is good for your heart."

Shaklee’s FlavoMax™Many people struggle to meet the

daily recommended value of five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables per day. However, without these vital amounts of fruits and veggies, the body does not receive the necessary phytonutrients provided by these essential foods that help fight free radicals.

Shaklee’s FlavoMax™ provides over 300mg of flavonoids—a 280mg increase from the average daily intake of 20mg. The high-powered anti-oxidant supple-ment guarantees the delivery of six key classes of flavonoids: proanthocyanidins, anthocyanidins, flavan-3-ols, flavones, flavonols, and flavanones. To ensure potency, Shaklee uses standardized extracts of each of the six classes of flavonoids.

FlavoMax:• Delivers powerful free-radical fighters to the blood and blood-rich tissues, such as the liver and intestines• Provides protection against cellular damage and promotes overall cell health• Supports cardiovascular and circulatory health• Promotes overall wellness• Formulated with standardized extracts that are nature-based• Provides flavonoids often found in plant parts not typically consumed: seeds, peels, flowers, and bark.

What are Flavonoids?Flavonoids are compounds found in

fruits, vegetables, and other plants with many beneficial

biochemical and anti-oxidizing

effects. These beneficial

elements help to protect

plants against

microbe and insect attacks, while at the same time providing the aesthetically pleasing vibrant colors of many fruits and flowers. Flavonoids biologically trigger the production of enzymes that fight disease and have been found to reduce the risk of certain cancers, heart disease, and age-related degenerative diseases. Some research indicates that flavonoids can assist in the prevention of tooth decay and reduce certain illnesses, such as the flu.

Different forms of flavonoids exist, each with its own characteristics and health-benefitting qualities:

QuercetinThis flavonoid

(more specifically, flavonol) is the most active of the flavonoids. Many medicinal plants, such as aloe, owe their high activity levels to the rich quercetin content. The compound is also known for its anti-inflammatory qualities because of the direct inhibition of the inflammation process. This occurs because quercetin inhibits the production and release of histamine and other allergic and inflammatory mediators. Quercetin is also known for its potent anti-oxidant and vitamin C sparing activity. Many studies have led researchers to believe that the compound also contains anti-cancer properties.

Quercetin is commonly found in supplements containing Hawthorne, an herbal supplement used for its healing effects on acute symptoms of heart failure. The medicinal qualities of quercetin have been demonstrated in one study where people who ate Quercetin-rich foods at least four times per week were 51% less likely to have lung cancer than those who ate none.

EpicatechinAnother member of the flavonoid

family is epicatechin, a compound known to improve blood flow, thus providing positive

Although an abundant supply of iron is available in iron-rich foods, the body has a difficult time absorbing it. Only about one-tenth of the iron in an average American diet is absorbed by the body. Therefore, our bodies require more iron than our diet provides. Only about 40% of the iron in animal tissue is available in a form your body can absorb. The remaining iron in animal tissue and the iron in dairy products and non-animal sources (like vegetables and whole grains) are difficult for the body to metabolize. A diet that includes whole grains, coffee and tea can decrease the chances for iron absorption. Phytates found in grains and tannins found in coffee and tea are inhibitors because they can join with other elements to form compounds that are difficult for your body to absorb.

One way to help with iron absorption is by getting a full daily value of vitamin C along with a full daily value of iron. The vitamin C helps the body absorb iron, especially “nonheme” forms of iron. This, however, is only effective when vitamin C and iron are taken simultaneously. By combining readily bioavailable ferrous forms of iron with vitamin C, Shaklee’s Iron Plus C Complex is a perfect way to ensure that your body is absorbing as much iron as possible, while providing your daily value of vitamin C at the same time!
