One of the easiest ways to transform your desired room into a dream nursery is the wall color.Unfortunately, when prepping a spare room for your nursery, it is easy to get overcome with emotions. Joyfor your new addition to the family, and possibly terror at all the things that must be accomplished! Whatstyle and decor to choose? Wallpaper or paint? Traditional or contemporary? While pondering these details, here's a quick rundown of the most common color palettes and theories on how they affect your new baby.

Sticking with Tradition

Two popular color choices remain blue for boys and pink for girls. Luckily, these color schemes havepotentially beneficial effects -- depending on their tone and brightness. Blue is recognized as being acalming color, but experts suggest avoiding blue-greys (sadness) or too dark of a navy hue. Happy, brightblues can not only add a fun pop of color but provide the most benefit. Classic pinks are known to be lush, romantic and feminine. In fact, the color is perceived as "loving" for both boys and girls, and is said to calmtantrums. Perhaps the tranquil effect might even pass on to new moms?

Fun Twists on Classic Hues

If regular old blue doesn't strike you, or you want something suitable for a neutral or girl's room, many newparents are opting for fun aqua and teal shades of blue. These colors go great with a variety of decoroptions and don't feel as "traditional." Some shades can even change the mood and look of the room in thesunlight versus at night, and transform with the space as the child grows older. Rather than pinks, somenew parents are looking toward more purple shades. Researchers believe that the perfect violet shade cancombine the calm strength of blue with the exciting energy of red. This color family is also known as a"regal" or "royal" color and can feel quite luxurious.

New Neutrals

Perhaps you don't want to commit to an interior color and want to build more on the decor and accessories?Neutrals such as classic beiges and browns can make a great backdrop for any color you choose, andtransitions well through the child's growth. Warmer shades can make quite a cozy-feeling room, and theseshades are also known to be "earthy" and "grounded." Look for rich browns -- either very dark or very light --and avoid the middle tones that can, unfortunately, match baby's diaper. The perfect combo of thesetimeless neutrals appear absolutely gorgeous in natural light and offer a calm respite to grow with baby.

Bold and Beautiful

Finally, if you're the type to throw "predictable" right out the window, bold colors (both light and dark) may bemore your taste. On the darker spectrum, reds and greys can stimulate the baby's developing eyesight, andreds are also known to be energizing. Some studies even show increased athletic ability as the child growsolder. Be careful going too bright with the reds however, to avoid over-stimulation and anxiety. Other studiesshow that some shades of red may hurt the child's academic abilities. Greys, on the other hand, can bequite versatile, and are known to harness emotion and introspect while creating a spacious and relaxed feel. However, experts note that mixing a cool grey room with pops of brightly-colored toys and accents can curbany negative "sadness" effects of the color. If you go for a darker grey to black shade, stick to smalleraccent walls, light-colored furniture and bright decorations to balance the room, and ensure plenty of naturallight. The result will be a strong, authoritative room that may be more suitable as the child grows a bit older. On the lighter end, bold yellows and oranges can make a cheerful, warm and lively space that promotesinteraction and concentration. Again, the shades are key here, as too bright of an orange can appear toshrink an already-small room, and too loud of a yellow can cause anxiety and agitation.

When picking your ultimate color palette, consider the overall feeling of the room you want to promote, yourfamily's personality, and the long term potential of the room -- especially with bolder colors that are hard tore-paint later on. With popular sites like Pinterest on the rise, too, it is easy to bring in tons of inspiration nexttime you hit the hardware or paint store. Heading in with these tips and inspirations in mind can ease someof the stress in planning for your new little one -- and creating their perfect nursery.
