WESLEY COLLEGE

Term one has moved very quickly and we can look back on a productive and enjoyable start to the year. Senior students are busy with their first round of NCEA assessments and the winter sports teams are beginning their pre-season fixtures.

There was a huge crowd at fiafia night where we were treated to some of the best performances seen in a long time with Kapa Haka, Samoan (boys and girls), Fijian, Cook Island, Niuean and Tongan groups all performing.

Our students performed magnificently at Polyfest both on the stage and around the venue creating a great image for Wesley College. A big thanks must go to all staff, tutors and parents who supported the groups over that journey.

These events are part of our school spirit and are important, however they can lead to a loss of time in the classroom and some students may have lost up to 5 or 6 days already this year.

It is important that you as parents and caregivers are aware and supportive of the school’s vision and drive to be a top performing academic institution. It was noted that many parents withdrew their children from the hostel after fiafia night. This meant the loss of two day’s education for some.

This practice simply cannot continue if we aspire to see our students heading to University after school.

Parent – teacher interviews are to be conducted on the last day of term and I encourage you to make a booking to see the teachers of your child. We are very keen to speak to you about the learning of your child and how we can work together to support them.

I wish all of the students a blessed and relaxing Easter with family and friends and look forward to seeing them back for 8 days of hard of work before the end of term holidays.

Congratulations to all our groups who performed on each of the stages. I extend a huge thank you to all the tutors, parents, caregivers, guardians and ex-students who assisted with preparing the groups for their performances; and to the school and hostel staff who assisted on each of the stages at this years’ festival.
