QUALITY ASSURANCE STANDARDS
WELDLOK is currently implementing a system that ensures all
products and manufacturing processes are in accordance with
quality assurance programme AS/NZS ISO 9002:1994.
CONSTRUCTION
WELDLOK Forgebar grating is constructed of Load Bearing Bars
in various depths and thicknesses with lateral restraint provided
by 6mm square twisted Cross Bars forge welded to the upper
edges of the Load Bearing Bars. This process produces a product
of one piece construction with a high strength to weight ratio
which meets the requirements of Australian Standard 1657-
1992 and British Standard 4592-1970.
MATERIAL
The Load Bearing Bars in WELDLOK Forgebar gratings are
manufactured from steel that complies to the following
equivalent standards: AS 1594–H250
AS 3679–250
WELDLOK FORGEBAR PRODUCT CODING
Plain
WELDLOK grating supplied with plain Load Bearing Bars and
6mm square twisted Cross Bars.
Serrated
Most WELDLOK gratings can be supplied with our unique
serrations which are produced during the slitting of our material.
This process provides a regular serration with a sharp edge
ensuring maximum traction for slippery conditions.

Load Bar Pitchings
Load BarDepth
WELDLOK’s serrated grating has been tested by a recognised
NATA laboratory for its co-efficient of friction and was found to
be equal or slightly better than other similar local products.
More importantly, because of WELDLOK’s unique method of
manufacture, the loss of load carrying capacity due to these
serrations averages less than 8%.
Refer to serrated conversion factor shown in load tables when
calculating the load bearing and spanning capacity.

Finishes
WELDLOK Gratings are available in a choice of three finishes:
1. Hot Dipped Galvanised
WELDLOK has its own in-house galvanising plant, providing a
24 hour service. The hot dip galvanising process produces a
durable, abrasion resistant coating of metallic zinc and zinc-iron
alloy layers metallurgically bonded to the steel base, at a bath
temperature of 450°C. Hot dip galvanising conforms to the
equivalent following standards:
Australian/New Zealand Standard AS/NZS 4680:1999
British Standard BS729-1971
American Standard ASTM-A123-73
2. Black Bitumen Dipped
An economical paint finish which is best suited to indoor
installations, or mining applications in a dry climate.
Note: there is no pre-treatment of steel before dipping.
This finish is not recommended in corrosive areas.
3. Untreated (No surface treatment/protection)
Normally supplied on stock mats or panels to customers who
wish to perform their own fabrication on grating.
AVAILABILITY
WELDLOK stock the most commonly used types of gratings in
standard mat sizes. For standard mat sizes refer to pages 6, 8
and 10. For fabricated panels delivery time will be confirmed at
the time of order. Having our in-house galvanising plant enables
us to offer shorter lead times when this service is required.
NON STANDARD PRODUCTS
Over the past years WELDLOK has made thousands of tonnes of
special purpose gratings designed to suit unique loading and
applications. If you have a requirement that is not covered by
our standard range, contact our Sales Department, they will be
pleased to assist you.

DESIGN CRITERIA
The figures shown in all safe load tables have been calculated in
accordance with the following data:
1 Loading Code AS 1170-1 load combination 1.25 x Dead Load
and 1.5 x Live Load.
2 Steel Structures Code AS 4100–1990.
3 Mass calculated with grating in an untreated and unedged
condition.
4 Minimum yield strength of steel 260 MPa.
5 Load calculated in accordance with an allowable bending
stress 171.6 MPa (0.66 Fy).
6 Load Bars are assumed simply supported and unserrated.
7 Spans have been based on maximum of 5mm deflection
which is a limiting deflection for pedestrian comfort.
See Load Tables on Pages 7, 9 and 11.

SERIES 30 GRATING – 30mm CENTRES (formerly Series 1)
This grating is virtually an international standard on all major
resource projects. Our Series 30 gratings have a high load
carrying capacity. WELDLOK panels can be supplied in a serrated
finish to suit offshore oil production platforms, oil refineries, or
any applications where additional walkway safety is required.
For flooring that is subjected to high impact loads, WELDLOK
suggest that the grating be supplied with Cross Bars on
50mm centres.

SERIES 60 GRATING – 60mm CENTRES (formerly Series 3)
Developed initially for the mining industry, our WELDLOK Series
60 grating minimises build-up of spillage materials on platform
floors. The larger openings allow most materials to fall through
providing a safer walking surface, however, this grating is very
light and has only 50% of the load carrying capacity of the
Series 30 grating.
WELDLOK Series 60 grating is not suitable for floors subject
to high impact loads.

When ordering treads nominate type of grating required. Example – T3 – 750 x 275 (Made from A30 – 325 Grating)
STAIR TREADS
WELDLOK stair treads can be supplied in Forgebar Series 30, 40,
60 and Diamond Grating. The treads shown here are purely
illustrative. Overall tread length can be made to any dimension.
We suggest though that tread width be selected from the table
showing recommended widths.
Stair treads wear at a greater rate than the actual flooring and
are more inclined to become bowed because of continual and
concentrated impact. Whatever the depth of the main flooring,
we recommend that stair treads should never have less than a
25 x 5 Load Bar size.
Nosing Bars should preferably be specified. When walking down
a grating stairway having treads without Nosing Bars, the pattern
of the grating tends to merge so that the edges of the tread
become ill defined, possibly causing over and under stepping.
The Nosing Bar also stiffens the front edge of the tread, further
resisting deflection caused by impact loads.

REPLACEABLE NON-SLIP STAIR TREAD NOSING
This Nosing Bar is a new concept in abrasive non-slip replaceable
stair tread nosing. It is extremely hard wearing and has excellent
anti-slip properties even when soiled or wet. As a result of its
safety features, this stair tread nosing is now being used on
offshore production platforms and in the mining industry. Tread
size dimensions are identical to Type T1 and T2 shown on the
previous page. Non-slip stair tread Nosing Bars can be supplied
loose for attachment to existing badly worn treads and are
available in any of the following length and width combinations.
Widths: 50
Lengths: 580, 730, 880, 1030, 1180
Types: T1-R Weld in type
T2-R Bolt in type (illustrated)
WELDLOK SAFE 'T' GRATING®
For those elevated platform areas that require additional safety,
WELDLOK SAFE ’T’ GRATING® offers the perfect solution.
• Tools and small objects are unable to fall through.
• Full foot support, non slip surface.
• Ideal surface for mezzanine floors, and for use with wheeled
trolleys when combined with Series 30 and 40 gratings.
• Unlike conventional gratings with Safety Mesh under, rubbish
does not collect between Load Bars.
• Where required, Safety Mesh can be fitted to the underside.
Specify by selecting suitable grating from load tables shown on
Pages 7, 9 and 11.
Ordering example — (WELDLOK A40–325 SAFE ‘T’ GRATING®).
WELDLOK GRIDPLATE
For those installations that require a solid surface of floor plate
with maximum spanning ability combined with minimum
weight, WELDLOK Gridplate is an economical and superior
alternative to traditional floor plate systems.
This product is ideal for applications which are subject to high
impact loads, and can be manufactured from any of the
WELDLOK range of Forgebar gratings.

FASTEN ING
METHODS
FASTENING METHODS
The most positive fixing method and by far the most economical
is on-site welding of the grating to support steelwork. Where
panels are to be removable or where surface treatment of the
grating may be damaged, WELDLOK fixing clips are recommended.
These can be installed and made secure by personnel working
from the top of the grating. WELDLOK fixing clips come in a
standard galvanised finish. A minimum of 4 clips should be used
per panel, on larger panels use extra clips at mid-span.
ILLUSTRATIONS 1, 2 AND 3
Illustrations 1, 2 and 3 are suitable for WELDLOK Series 30, 40
and 60 gratings respectively, comprising a double saddle clip
(suitable for the appropriate series). An 8mm diameter cheese
head screw and bottom clamping bracket.
ILLUSTRATION 4
Both the WELDLOK Series 30 and Series 40 clips shown in 1 and
2 are suitable for use to secure two adjacent panels.
ILLUSTRATION 5
Double saddle clip used with self drilling or thread cutting
screws. Can also be used in locations where there is no open
flange on the supporting steelwork to clamp to.
IMPORTANT
To reduce the risk of accidents WELDLOK recommends that if
panels are used on site as a means of temporary access during
erection, that they be lightly tack-welded to the support
steelwork. Due to constant traffic, unfixed panels have a
tendency to move or drift imperceptibly away from the
supporting flange with the potential for the next person to tip the
panel. When an area of panels is in its correct position it should
be fixed immediately, by one of the recommended methods.

DIAMOND GRATING
Although one of the earliest patterns made by most grating
companies, WELDLOK Diamond Grating still has applications in
the industry where it is more appropriate than forgebar grating.
Coupled with a fully serrated top surface it provides excellent
anti-slip properties in all directions.
HEAVY WHEEL LOADS
WELDLOK Heavy Close Diamond Grating Type ‘CD’ is the ideal

WELDLOK LIVESTOCK GRATING – SERIES 20
Livestock grating is a forge-welded mild steel flooring system for
abattoirs, slaughter houses, woolsheds, piggeries, cowsheds,
calfpens and stock crates.
It is used extensively overseas, particularly in New Zealand, in areas
where hygiene is of the utmost importance. The grating is an
economical, fast fitting system, and can span up to 1.5 metres
between supports. This creates significant savings on supporting
steelwork or timbers, thus making it ideal for elevated flooring.
Weldlok Livestock Grating has an 80% open area which allows
quick and easy cleaning of the grating and the floor under the
grating. The rigidity of the steel grating allows for the direct
bolting of posts and fences, therefore allowing the simple
movement of fence lines.
Standard mats 6.2 metres by 1.063 metres are available ex stock,
with custom panels available on request. Hot dip galvanised or
untreated are the finishes available.

STEEL ARMOUR FLOOR TILES
WELDLOK Steel Armour Floor Tiles offer an economical, efficient
means of reinforcing concrete floors that are subject to heavy
traffic and/or high impact. WELDLOK Steel Armour Floor Tiles
are well suited to heavy fork lift areas, warehouses, factories and
manufacturing facilities, docks and freight stations.
As well as protecting whole concrete
floors, broken or damaged concrete
floors can be simply repaired by the
installation of WELDLOK Steel
Armour Floor Tiles.
APPLICATIONS
• Strengthen and protect
concrete floors
• Prevent high impact damage
• Restore broken concrete floor
• Prevent heavy traffic damage
• Economical, long wearing, safe
DESCRIPTION
Each WELDLOK Steel Armour Floor
Tile measures 250 x 250mm
(16 tiles = 1m2) and is constructed of
2.5mm steel plate (wt = 22kg/m2)
WELDLOK Steel Armour Floor Tiles are available either untreated or
galvanised. The 16 tangs bond each WELDLOK Steel Armour Floor
Tile to the concrete floor, distributing weight evenly and shielding
the concrete from damaging impact and stresses. The concrete
subfloor should be designed to carry the anticipated loads
without taking into account the concrete used to bed the tiles.
INSTALLATION
Tiles should be bedded in a
compactable, plastic concrete base
that should be at least 40mm thick.
The mix for this base should be:
1 part cement
2 parts fine sand
1.5 parts gravel
(10mm sieve size maximum)
WELDLOK Steel Armour Floor Tiles
should be laid in small, workable
sections of approximately 1m2 on a
base that has been screed off to the
correct floor level and fall. Tap tiles
with a hammer, taking care to align
all tile junctions. Concrete extruded
through the tang holes should be
cleared away before it dries.

WELDLOK INTERLOCK
ALUMINIUM GRATING
INTERLOCK ALUMINIUM GRATING, available in
either Series L30 or L40, is outstanding for
applications where the following criteria are required:
1. Low maintenance costs
2. Corrosion resistant to most chemicals
3. Non-sparking
4. Light weight with high structural strength
5. 80% open area for maximum light and ventilation.
These features make INTERLOCK ALUMINIUM GRATING ideal for
use in sewage treatment plants, oil refineries, munitions factories,
ship loader boom walkways, transport tankers and sunscreens.
WELDLOK ALUMINIUM
GRIDPLATE
ALUMINIUM GRIDPLATE combines
3mm thick heavy-pattern aluminium floor plate
permanently welded to INTERLOCK GRATING. This
combination provides a light strong floor that can resist high
impact loads, and can be manufactured from any of the range
of INTERLOCK GRATING.
INTERLOCK ALUMINIUM STAIR TREADS
INTERLOCK ALUMINIUM STAIR TREADS can be supplied in Series
L30 and L40. The stair treads shown here are purely illustrative.
Although overall tread length can be made to any dimension,
we suggest that tread width be selected from the table of
recommended widths on page 12. INTERLOCK ALUMINIUM
STAIR TREADS are also available in types T1 to T6 inclusive as
shown on page 12.
Serrations are also available on Interlock Gratings, however the
recommended minimum depth for serrated panels is 25mm.
When selecting the grating type go up one grade in depth to
compensate for the reduced load carrying capacity.

give our clients extremely fast turn-around times. Gratings can
be manufactured and put into the galvanising plant at 4pm and
be ready for dispatch 7am the next morning.
The plant is run by our sister company, GALVANISING SERVICES,
which has grown into one of the largest suppliers of jobbing
galvanising in Australia.
We are equipped to handle a wide range of fabricated steel
products due to the flexibility provided by the large bath size of
10.3m x 1.85m x 2.2m deep.
All galvanising meets the requirements of AS/NZS:4680:1999.
GALVANISING SERVICES PTY LTD. has another branch at Coffs
Harbour. For further details see back cover.
Your enquiries on any galvanising requirements would be

SAVE ON DRAFTING DETAILING COSTS
When supplying WELDLOK with a grating drawing, show only
the outline of grating to be supplied together with cut-outs
around equipment, steelwork, location
of supporting steelwork and sections
required in the project.
DO NOT DETAIL UP PANELS.
WELDLOK will provide the most
economical split up of panels to suit
your floor layout. As grating
manufacturers use different types of
Forgewelding machines, each will
have different standard panel widths.
Your draftsperson need not produce
fully detailed panel drawings for large
areas which might be using another grating manufacturers
standard widths and would therefore be useless to us. Save
yourself the cost, let us do it for you.
WELDLOK use state of the art CAD
technology to create panel details
and erection marking plans.
This information is printed in either
laser quality A3 or A4 sheets, or
plotted on sheets of up to A1 size.
Laser prints A4 size can be sent by
fax anywhere in the world. Our
clients appreciate this service
especially when their site managers
need erection information quickly.
