32018 UCM Annual GIVE FROM THE HEART Gala
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
On behalf of the UCM Board and team – and especially the families we serve – thank you for joining us tonight for the 2018 Give From The Heart Gala.
Thank you to The Friends of UCM, our volunteer hosts who make this celebration possible. We are grateful for their enthusiasm, energy, and creativity. They exemplify the caring and can-do spirit in our great community. We extend special thanks to all our Gala sponsors for their generous support. And we thank each of you, for choosing to attend and support our community.
Tonight we are pleased to honor Joanne and Bruce Malkin with the 2nd annual UCM Gerald W. Hyland Humanitarian Award. Named for retired Fairfax County Supervisor Gerry Hyland, this award recognizes individuals who have demonstrated a remarkable commitment to bettering the welfare of our community. Mr. and Mrs. Malkin have been active members of our community for decades, with volunteer leadership at UCM, the Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club, and the American Association of University Women. We are grateful for their decades of servant leadership and unwavering dedication to our community.
It’s an exciting time at UCM! We were awarded 2017 Nonprofit of the Year by the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce for excelling in building community. We have sought input from more than 600 key stakeholders, including clients, in an effort to respond to community needs and improve the programs and services we offer to ensure that UCM is servingachangingcommunity. For example, we have expanded our Food Pantry distribution hours and enhanced STEM programming for youth at our community centers. We are strengthening ties with clients, the government, nonprofit partners, the faith community, and others to create programs that are outcomes driven and that empowerourneighborsinneedtotransformtheirlives.
Your support creates a much brighter future for thousands of struggling families in our community. It means a child starts Kindergarten ready to learn, a parent’s English skills improve so she obtains a better job, a teen gets homework help on the computer at the UCM community center, and a group of low-income neighbors come together to plan how they can improve their diverse community.
Their success starts with you. You make it possible for our clients to have a caring place to turn to for help and hope in their time of need. While they come to UCM for help with practical needs, they receive much more than just food or financial assistance to avoid eviction. They get the hope they need to gain independence and build a better future for their families.
How can you be part of this success? Give from the heart: donate tonight to empower, transform, enrich. Your support for UCM is a sound social investment that helps people become self-reliant members of our community.
UCMenvisionsacommunitywhereeveryonethrives. Please, join us at the heart of community. Together, we change lives – and lift up all our hearts.
Thank you. We hope you enjoy the evening.

Bruce served as president of his Kiwanis Club in 2008 and 2009. He has served as
chair of the club’s Community Service Committee for many years. The club hosts
several food drives every year at the Hollin Hall Safeway, and members deliver
donated food from the Sherwood Hall Farmers Market to the UCM pantry. Bruce has
been an avid advocate for allocating resources from the Kiwanis Club’s fundraisers
to support activities for youth at UCM's Creekside Village Community Center and
Sacramento Neighborhood Center – especially summer field trips that expose them
to the world outside their immediate neighborhood. He has also volunteered at UCM
as a Stepping Stones intake volunteer for emergency assistance and as an ESL
teacher at UCM’s Progreso Center for Literacy and Citizenship.
In addition to her leadership of the Kiwanis Club and service as president in 2016,
Joanne is a long-time active member and leader of the Mount Vernon Branch of the
American Association of University Women (AAUW). She has held numerous
leadership positions in the AAUW branch, including current co-president and several
past terms in that role. The branch regularly supports UCM with food and holiday gift
drives, as well as collection drives for books and supplies for children at UCM’s
Early Learning Center. Last year, the group created an outdoor “learning garden” for
the children.
Joanne and Bruce Malkin
UCM created the Gerald W. Hyland Humanitarian Award in 2017 to recognize
outstanding individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to the welfare and
overall economic prosperity of those in our community and whose
accomplishments are consistent with the goals and direction of United Community
Ministries. Gerry was first elected to represent the Mount Vernon District on the
Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in Fall 1987 and retired 28 years later, after
serving 7 terms. He was the inaugural recipient of this UCM award.
Joanne and Bruce Malkin share a
passion for helping individuals in low-
income families, especially children. They
demonstrate a long-term, sustained
commitment to serving people in need in
our community and to empowering, transforming, and enriching their lives.
Long-time residents of Mount Vernon, the Malkins each have a long history of
public service, including federal government careers as State Department Foreign
Service Officers. Since their retirement in 2002, their leadership and personal
participation in numerous Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club (MVKC) activities has
benefited thousands of UCM children and families.
