Multi Camera Techniques LO1

One example of a multi-camera production is the live performance of Pink Floyd: Live in Pompeii. Pink Floyds: Live in Pompeii was recorded in 1971 and was also viewed as a documentary film as well as a concert film. It was filmed in the ancient Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii, Italy. It took four days to film the main footage of the concert and was released 1972.The reason that this event was filmed with multi camera is because there are several elements to the video during each song, it wouldn’t be enough just to use one camera to capture it all whilst maintaining the viewer’s interest, so there are several cameras around the theatre which each show a different musician or maybe the same shot at different angles. Because the audio used on the film is mainly consisting of music, it would be best to film multi camera for the synchronicity of sound.

A second example of multi- camera production is when the technique is used in a studio. A lot of these studio productions consist of talk shows such as The Graham Norton Show. This type of programming features celebrity interviews in a relaxed environment. The purpose of multi-camera is so that the production team can switch between two people on screen in quick and fluent succession, which is helpful when the guest is being asked questions, and therefore able to have good coverage of action, and because of the constraints of studio. Because of the studio audience and the main part of the set, there is a limited space as to where cameras and equipment can go, meaning that that there have to be several cameras around the studio to avoid moving around. The third reason is so that the synchronisation of audio and visuals.

The third example of multi camera production is when it used in public events such as the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton that took place on 29 th April 2011. The ceremony was broadcasted all over the world and was a national holiday for the British public. There are various reasons for multiple cameras. One of them was to follow the action because part of the ceremony was following the car that the Prince was in, from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey. This meant that there were several cameras set up along the side of the road to follow the car as it passed. Another reason was to communicate with the audience, and to show them what is happening as its happening because of the live broadcasting. This meant that when Prince William was talking the camera had to be focused on him, whilst another camera is focused on Kate Middleton for when she speaks. Another reason is for synchronisation of the audio and visual.
