Los Padres Times President’s Message: It’s been a rough summer, and looking forward to some cooler weather in September! I hope everyone has not melted or been affected any of these fires. 2020 has been a strange year to say the least. We have had some great campouts. Check out the fun you missed, in our campouts, general meetings demonstrations as we are trying to do our best with the COVID restrictions. Lou and Rick Jacobsen hosted our last general meeting and gave us a packing demo. We hope to have a packing clinic with Lou and Rick, so watch your emails and Facebook for announcements. It was well attended, sorry you missed out. We have some great new/returning members, please get to know them at our next general meeting or campout. We do have some sad news, with all the COVID restrictions, we will not be able to go to Santa Cruz for our fall campout but planning to have one at the end of October to ensure safe social distancing for our members.
I want to give a Big Thanks to all the board members; they have done a great job for this unit. They sure made my job a lot easier. I appreciate all the behind the scene jobs that they do. Please thank them when you can.
Stay Safe Everyone!
Shirley

County Parks is working on the fee structure and reservation process. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that they’ll have this worked out by the end of September and we can celebrate the official opening.
Pismo Preserve: The Preserve is now open Monday through Friday, dawn to dusk. Trails are one-way to encourage social distancing. To reserve one of the three equestrian parking spaces, go to https://lcslo.org/pismo-preserve-equestrian-parking-registration/
Diablo Canyon Lands Ownership Management Plan – Working Group: Due to my participation in making presentations to the Diablo Canyon Engagement Panel last year regarding ideas on what to do with the Diablo Canyon Lands once the power plant is decommissioned, I was invited to participate in a Working Group to prepare formal plans for submittal to PG&E. The group consists of 25 members from organizations representing trails, open space, parks, botanists and biologists, and cultural resources: AHC, SLOPOST, CCCMB, Friends of Wild Cherry Canyon, Sierra Club, current County Parks Director, retired State Parks Director, Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo, Surfrider, Salud Carbajal’s office, Morro Coast Audubon Society, Creek Land Conservation, Port San Luis Harbor District, and yak tityu tityu tribe of the Northern Chumash, Our first zoom group meeting was August 6. We are focusing on the three main areas of Diablo Canyon Lands: North Ranch, South Ranch and Wild Cherry Canyon. I am part of the sub-group on the South Ranch, and assisting with trail ideas. More to come!
Trail Workdays: CCCMB will schedule workdays as shelter-in-home orders are revised. Check their website, cccmb.org for informal opportunities to work on trails.
River Road Horse Camp — Work Days Report
On July 10, another group of volunteers participated in a workday. The picnic tables we put together on June 26 were stained. The corrals that were purchased months ago were driven out by Shirley and Greg. We unloaded and set up all six corrals. Work was completed by 11am, and we headed to Pozo Saloon for lunch. Parks staff is working on the fee structure and reservation process, and the official name will be: River Road Horse Camp.
We have had four workdays: One in December to start repairing the fence line and installing the gates; one in May to mow the camp area and parking lot (thanks Wes!), and the two in June and July.
Big thanks to the volunteers: Patti and Fred Mensing, Kaye Bruns, Shirley Rasmussen and Greg Feinberg, Kris Pimentel, Wes Womble, Bob Skinner and Meichelle Callerman, Melody and Bob Stone, Kathy Lon-gacre, Kathe Hustace, Monica Bennett, Barbara and Dave Dixon, Bob Thomson, and Phyllis Rockwood. And thanks to SLOPOST for buying lunch for the volunteers at the June and July workdays.
It's been a long process since the original proposal was submitted in February 2019, and when we re-ceived conditional approval in July 2019. Then in December, we were put on hold due to the zoning issue. When the Planning Commission hearing was scheduled, the coronavirus hit, and the hearing was resched-uled to May. Since the Planning Commission hearing, we have made such incredible progress and we are so close to opening. Thanks to everyone’s support and effort. Hopefully we’ll have an opening ceremony soon!

McCORMICK RANCH RIDE
On June 25-28, 2020, we had 30 plus Los Padres BCHC members were able to get out and get some good riding and camping done. This was a new area to ride for many of us, so exploring the hills surrounding the McCormick's ranch was an added joy.
All riders found their way back to the camp with stories of the awesome views from the adjoining Los Flores Ranch Park. We collected a nice sized amount of dollars from attendees for a gift certificate to Farm Supply and sent it to them with a thank you card from all of us.
Again this seemed to be another good experience for our members so we will keep looking into future rides. Weather, fire and pandemic permitting.
Always any suggestions for future places to camp and ride are greatly appreciated.
