LOCAL HISTORY: SUMMER POOLSSummer is here and it’s time to soak up some sun and go for a swim. Do you remember the pools off East Main St. by the Welland Canal? This 1958 Welland Tribune article highlights Welland’s recreational assets of the time.
“The City of Welland is well served in parks and recreation fa-cilities. With 51 acres of fine parks and one of the finest rose gardens in the province, the city has rightfully earned the name of “Rose City.” Augmenting the parks areas are the ten-nis courts, swimming pool, wading pool, and lighted and un-lighted baseball fields.
Probably the greatest asset the City of Welland has, as far as recreational facilities are concerned, are the swimming and wading pools, situated off East Main St. along the Welland Canal...”
“...Since the inception of the pools thousands of youngsters and adults have taken advantage of the opportunities to learn to swim and the art of life saving.
It was through the efforts of the Welland Lions Club and the Welland Optimist Club that Welland secured these pools.”
