Accessibility• Tyler is a naturalistic landscape andaccess to plants and garden displaysis often on turf or mulched surfaces.

• Paved surfaces include the path from the Visitor Center to the Barn,historic buildings, and pond, and the ADA compliant Scenic Loop andpaths in the Wister RhododendronGarden.

• Fort Tyler tree house is ADA-accessible.

ARBORETUM ETIQUETTE

• Admire our amazing trees, but donot climb them.

• Leave the flowers, leaves, seeds,pinecones, acorns and other naturalmaterials for the birds and animalsthat need them.

• For your safety and the protectionof our ecosystems, stay on designated paths and trails in woodlands or meadows.

• Help us protect our beautiful plants from hungry deer. Whenpassing through the gates of thedeer fence, please be sure that they shut properly.

• Enjoy a picnic at our picnic tablesor on a blanket. Please do not bringany alcohol and remove all trashand debris.

• Pets, other than service animals, are not permitted at the Arboretum. Bicycles and other active recreationalequipment are also prohibited.

• Protect our natural areas and dispose of smoking materials properly after they are thoroughlyextinguished.

Please be aware that a visit to the Arboretum is an outdoor experiencewith accompanying risks, including,but not limited to, conditions such asuneven terrain, insects, slippery areas,and open water. Please exercise appropriate caution.

In March of 1681, just 17 days afterKing Charles II gave William Penn hiscolony, Quaker Thomas Minshall purchased 625 acres from Penn. Onehundred fifty years later, Minshall’ssixth-generation descendants, Minshalland Jacob Painter, began systematicallyplanting trees, shrubs and herbaceousplants on their ancestral farm, thussowing the seeds for what was to become Tyler Arboretum. After theproperty was bequeathed to the publicin 1944 by Laura Tyler, extensive horticultural exhibits were developedfrom the mid-1940s through the 1960sby the Arboretum’s first director, Dr. John C. Wister.

Tyler Arboretum remains a place ofnatural beauty and history and is stewardto 650 acres. Today, Tyler featuresrenowned plant collections and gardens,heritage and champion trees, historicbuildings, a collection of unique treehouses, vegetable and herb gardens,beautiful flowering trees and shrubs,native wildflowers, a pond full of active aquatic life, a butterfly house,an extensive paved path system, hikingtrails through woodlands, wetlands andmeadows and—of course—majestictowering trees. Tyler is also recognizedas an IBA (Important Bird Area) by theNational Audubon Society.

Enjoy Our Plants and Gardens• Enjoy fragrant spring flowers in the Magnolia, Crabapple, and Lilac displays.

• Be dazzled by 13acres of colorfulazaleas and rhododendrons in the Wister RhododendronGarden.

• Discover beautiful spring wildflowersand other Delaware Valley plants inthe Native Woodland Walk.

• Explore the world of herbs in the Fragrance Garden and learn about edibles in the Vegetable Demonstration Garden.

• Stroll through the extensive Pinetum,a display of pines, spruces, firs, andother members of the pine familyplanted in a meadow setting.

Have Fun with the Kids• Explore our tree houses, search theStopford Family Meadow Maze, visitthe Magical Pathand other kidfriendly features,look for frogs andturtles in the pond,and visit the Butterfly House.

Take a Walk or Hike• Paved paths provide access for mobility-impaired, families withstrollers and fitness walkers.Enjoy the ScenicLoop (just overone mile) throughthe Pinetum andmeadows, and thepaths in the Wister RhododendronGarden (3/4 of a mile).

• Tyler’s system of over 17 miles of hiking trails traverse through the 550acres of natural areas outside the deerfence. Seven different trails range from1.9 miles to 7.4 miles; trail maps areavailable in the Visitor Center.
