The Spring Festival Gala Dinner
under the auspices of Chef Philippe Etchebest
Saturday 15 June 2013
Following well-established tradition, the festivities of the VINEXPO exhibition will be launched in Saint-Emilion with the Saint-Emilion Jurade’s
Gala Dinner on Saturday 15 June. This exclusive evening organised at the heart of the medieval town has received a record number of enquiries
and had to close bookings several weeks ago. This evening will be the third time the Saint-Emilion Chef Philippe Etchebest works with the Saint-Emilion Jurade and will be another
opportunity to honour the close relationship that has developed over the years between this illustrious ambassador of Saint-Emilion and the
local winegrowers. In fact, for the first time in its history, the Jurade will welcome a celebrity other than a winegrower or merchant as Jurat, by
inducting their peer and Chef, Philippe Etchebest himself! 41 other celebrities, all wine professionals, connoisseurs or journalists from all over the world will also be inducted at this Solemn Chapter of
the Spring Festival, chaired by First Jurat, Hubert de Bouard. The names of French actor Stéphane Hénon, well-known for his role in “Plus Belle
la Vie” and architect Mario Botta have already been announced. This will be a prestigious evening, rich in Saint-Emilion colour with:
Inductions conducted in the moat of Palais Cardinal
A dinner for 800 guests prepared by Chef Philippe Etchebest (2 Michelin stars at Hostellerie de Plaisance in Saint-Emilion)

THE SAINT-EMILION COUPE DES CRUS
VINEXPO – Sunday 16 June 2013 The Saint-Emilion Coupe des Crus, organised by the Saint-Emilion Wine Council, will be
held at VINEXPO on Sunday 16 June 2013 from 12.0 to 16.0 in Tasting Lounge 3 located in
Hall 3.
Nearly 130 wines have been entered for this 2-yearly contest consisting of eliminating
rounds, when pairs of wines from the same appellation are pitted one against the other,
comparing three vintages, 2008, 2009 and 2010. The winner in each appellation is the
wine considered to display the most regular quality across the three vintages.
The Saint-Emilion Coupe des Crus will be held throughout the whole afternoon, when the
President of the Saint-Emilion Wine Council, Jean-François Quenin, will be present along
with representatives of the Saint-Emilion estates and of course the jury members. The
juries will be made up of specialist wine journalists and international professionals
attending VINEXPO. Prizes in the form of Riedel carafes will be awarded at the end of the
competition.

About Philippe ETCHEBEST
After a classical training at the Bordeaux hotel school, then a short detour via the family restaurant Le
Chipiron in Arcachon, Philippe Etchebest worked with some of the big names such as Jean Bardet, Firmin
Arambide and Jacques Chibois, then took his first position as second chef at Le Clos Longchamps in Paris (2
Michelin stars) followed by a stay at Les Jardins de l’Opéra in Toulouse. Philippe is Basque, but Bordeaux
has adopted him and he is in love with the south-west of France. He was chef at the Château Grand Barrail
hotel, before living a Perigord adventure at Château des Reynats, where he gained his first Michelin star.
Hostellerie de Plaisance with its rich history, but its resolute future outlook needed a Chef able to build
bridges between traditional fare and modern cuisine. Philippe Etchebest met the challenge so well, he won
a second prestigious Michelin star for Hostellerie de Plaisance in 2008. In his characteristically daring way,
he introduces impressionistic touches from elsewhere that he has collected on his travels, but the produce
remains fairly and squarely the focus of all his dishes. Philippe himself calls his cuisine modern and inspired
by sound classical fundamentals. He strives to make his dishes contemporary, light and with elevated taste.
His thoughts begin at the local market nearby, which provides inspiration and where he maintains special
relations with producers. He is always alert and shows interest in everything. He likes things to go quickly and enjoys a good team spirit. He is a
painstaking perfectionist and his cuisine is often said to be delicate and feminine, which in view of his pastimes and physique may appear
paradoxical, but this is what highlights his talent and appeal.
Since 2010, Philippe Etchebest has set out to share his own experience in a TV programme on the French 6th channel, entitled “Cauchemar en
Cuisine” (Nightmare in the Kitchen), in which he helps out restaurateurs in difficulty.
