The 5R’s and Framework of Antimicrobial Stewardship Practice
As little as possible, as much as necessary.
1. Responsibility
The prescribing veterinarian takes personal responsibility for the decision to use antimicrobials and any resulting impacts on the animal and others.
2. Reduction
Reduce antimicrobial use by preventing infection through appropriate vaccination and husbandry, considering topical and localised use, and avoiding unjustified prophylactic and non-bacterial uses.
3. Refinement
Continuously evaluate prescribing practices, dosage regimens and therapeutic plans.
4. Replacement
Use efficacious non-antimicrobial alternatives whenever possible.
5. Review
Review and update the practice Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) Plan at least annually for continuous improvement to reflect contemporary best practices.
