For What It’s Worth by Buffalo Springfield
There's something happening hereWhat it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over thereTelling me I got to beware
I think it's time we stop,
children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind
I think it's time we stop,
hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side
It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line,
the man come and take you away
We better stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, now, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

We don't smoke marijuana in
Muskogee; We don't take our
trips on LSD. We don't burn our
draft cards down on Main
Street; We like livin' right and
bein' free. We don't make a
party out of lovin'; We like
holdin' hands and pitchin' woo;
We don't let our hair grow long
and shaggy, Like the hippies
out in San Francisco do.
CHORUS
I'm proud to be an Okie from
Muskogee, A place where even
squares can have a ball. We
still wave Old Glory down at
the courthouse, And white
lightnin's still the biggest thrill
of all.
Leather boots are still in
style for manly footwear;
Beads and Roman sandals
won't be seen. Football's still
the roughest thing on
campus, And the kids here
still respect the college
dean.
CHORUS
I'm proud to be an Okie from
Muskogee, A place where
even squares can have a ball.
We still wave Old Glory down
at the courthouse, And white
lightnin's still the biggest
thrill of all.

If you're going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you're going to San Francisco
You're gonna meet some gentle people there
For those who come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there
In the streets of San Francisco
Gentle people with flowers in their hair
All across the nation
Such a strange vibration
People in motion
There's a whole generation
With a new explanation
People in motion people in motion
For those who come to San Francisco
Be sure to wear some flowers in your hair
If you come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there
If you come to San Francisco
Summertime will be a love-in there
Don't Bogart that joint my friend, pass it over to meDon't Bogart that joint my friend, pass it over to me

Don't Bogart that joint my friend, pass it over to meDon't Bogart that joint my friend, pass it over to me
Roll, another one, just like the other oneCause this ones burned about, to the end
So come on and be a real friend
Don't Bogart that joint my friend, pass it over to meDon't Bogart that joint my friend, pass it over to me
Don't Bogart that joint my friend, pass it over to meDon't Bogart that joint my friend, pass it over to me
I hear people talkin' bad, About the way we have to live here in this country,
Harpin' on the wars we fight, An' gripin' 'bout the way things oughta be.
An' I don't mind 'em switchin' sides, An' standin' up for things they believe in.
When they're runnin' down my country, man, They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me. Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me.
Runnin' down the way of life,Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep.
If you don't love it, leave it:Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'.
If you're runnin' down my country, man,You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.
I read about some squirrely guy,Who claims, he just don't believe in fightin'.
An' I wonder just how long,The rest of us can count on bein' free.
They love our milk an' honey,But they preach about some other way of livin'.When they're runnin' down my country, hoss,
They're walkin' on the fightin' side of me.
Yeah, walkin' on the fightin' side of me.Runnin' down the way of life,
Our fightin' men have fought and died to keep.If you don't love it, leave it:
Let this song I'm singin' be a warnin'.If you're runnin' down my country, man,
You're walkin' on the fightin' side of me. (2 times)
Yeah, c‟mon on all you big strong men. Uncle Sam needs your help
again. He‟s got himself in a terrible jam. Way down yonder in Vietnam. So put down your books and pick
up a gun. We‟re gonna have a whole lot of fun!
Chorus:And it‟s 1, 2, 3, what‟re we fighting
for? Don‟t ask me, I don‟t give a damn. Next stop is Vietnam. And it‟s 5, 6, 7, open up the pearly gates. Ah,
ain‟t no time to wonder why. Whoopee! We‟re all gonna die!
Well c‟mon generals, let‟s move fast. Your big chance has come at last. Gotta go out and get those
Reds. The only good Commie is one who‟s dead. And you know that
peace can only be won. When we‟ve blown „em all to kingdom come!
Repeat Chorus
Well c‟mon on Wall Street -- don‟t move slow. Why man, this is war-a-
go-go! There‟s plenty good money to be made by supplying the Army with the tools of the trade. Just hope and pray that if we drop the bomb. They
drop it on-a Vietcong!
Chorus
Well c‟mon mothers throughout this land. Pack your boys off to VietnamC‟mon pops, don‟t hesitate. Send „em off before it‟s too late. Be the
first one on your block. To have your boy come home in a box!
Chorus
Fighting soldiers from the sky Fearless men who jump and die
Men who mean just what they say The brave men of the Green Beret
ChorusSilver wings upon their chest
These are men, America‟s best One hundred men will test today
But only three win the Green Beret
Trained to live off natures landTrained in combat, hand-to-hand Men who fight by night and day Courage peak from the Green
Berets
Chorus These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today But only three win the Green Beret
Back at home a young wife waits Her Green Beret has met his fate He has died for those oppressed
Leaving her his last request “Put silver wings on my son‟s chest
Make him one of America‟s best He‟ll be a man they'll test one day
Have him win the Green Beret”
Chorus
Silver wings upon their chest These are men, America's best
One hundred men will test today But only three win the Green Beret
Some folks are born made to wave the flag
Ooh, they're red, white, and blue
And when the band plays "Hail to the Chief"
They point the cannon right at you
It ain't me, it ain't me , I ain't no senator's son
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, don’t they help themselves
But when the tax man comes to the door,
Lord the house looks like a rummage sale
It ain't me, it ain't me, it ain't no millionaire's son
It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one
Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war
And when you ask them,
"How much should we give?"
They only answer "More! More! More!"
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no military son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one
One pill makes you largerAnd one pill makes you small
But the one’s the mother gives youDon’t do anything at all
Go ask AliceWhen she’s 10 feet tall
And if you go chasing rabbitsAnd you know you are going to fall
Tell’em a hook-ah smoking caterpillarHas give you the call
Recall AliceWhen she was just small
When men on the chessboardGet up and tell you where to go
And you’ve just had some kind of mushroomAnd your mind is moving slow
Go ask AliceI think she’ll know
When logic and proportionHaving fallen sloppy dead
And White Knight is talking backwardsAnd the Red Queen’s “off with her head!”
Remember what the dormouse saidFEED YOUR HEADFEED YOUR HEADFEED YOUR HEAD
Were the Anti-war protests, along with the music of the era affective in bringing about
the end to the Vietnam War?
The first opinion: Yes, very effective, why? Kept the public informed on the issues.
There was some sympathy towards the protestors.
The second opinion: No, why?
The Protestors were viewed by many as too radical
Many Americans believed the U.S. Government was spending too much money on the war.
