VALLEY of KLAMATH FALLS
INTRODUCTION

Ancient Free and Accepted Masonry was formally organ
ized in the Klamath Basin in 1880; Grand Master Rocky Pres
ton Earhart [S.G.I.G. in Oregon from 1882 to 1890) granted a
dispensation July 16, 1879 for Klamath Lodge U.D. to work--
its Charter being granted and dated June 15, 1880. Scottish
Rite activity followed some 45 years later; the activity was
widespread in this sparsely inhabited, new country and inclu
ded all of Klamath and Lake Counties in Oregon and both Tule
lake and Dorris and the surrounding countryside in Siskiyou
County, California.
SECTION 8.
A. FOUNDERS
Soon after 1925 several Scottish Rite Masons, having
made themselves known to each other and having expressed
their common desire to ~ .1..,n, Clze R.£.1:.e began meeting, in
frequently at first--there being no fixed time of the month.
For the most part the activities were restric~ed , voluntar
ily, to book reviews and discussions. No minutes were kept
until the spring of 1931, at which time Brother A.L. Anderson,
32° was the leading light and did most of the work as evi
denced by the minutes of the meeting of April 5, 1931 [Easter
Sunday].
Early that morning these Brothers met in the banquet
room of the Willard Hotel in Klamath Falls about the break
fast table to enjoy the Sunrise Feast which brings to a

close those significant Ceremonies of Relighting the Lights.
The meeting was highly significant in the Klamath Basin
not only for the obvious devotion of those Brothers to the
Rite in Celebration of the Easter Morning Service; it was the
start of the CASCADE SCOTTISH RITE CLUB.

At the first meeting the following Brothers· were present: A.L. Anderson, James Baker, T.R. Gillenwaters, C.A. Dunn, Paul O. Landry, F.W. DeLapp, L.B. Kimble, M.E. Cooper [dentist], J. A. Rosser, J. Kenoffel, C.W. Lyons, R.T. McMullen, F.W. Ahrens, G.W. Hillis, V.J. Josephson, N.G. Wheeler, J.W. Prince, L.L. Gaghagen and Walter Jones [Wise Master of Siskiyou Chapter Rose Croix (Medford)].
"The Cascade Scottish Rite Club continued to exist until July 15, 1935. During the interim the club 1members] undertook to learn and to exemplify the Ninth Degree 'Elu of the Nine' and after about 18 months on the ritualistic work the team exemplified the Degree at Medford in the fall of 1935 and thereafter continued to work on that Degree so long as Medford and Klamath Falls held joint Reunions. The joint Reunions between Medford and Klamath Falls were always pleasant affairs and the relations between the mother lodge anp her child are still very close and friendly.".: s.7
B. PERSONAL REPRESENTATIVES
A review of the minut~s indicates that Brother Arthur W.
Schaupp, 32° acted in the capacity of Personal Representative
of the S.G.I.G. from inception of this Valley in 1935 until
1971. In 1937 Bro, Schaupp was invested with the Rank of
Knight Commander of the Court of Honour, and in 1941 was cor
oneted a. 33°, I.G.H. lI1'spector··Generai Honorary).

1971 until 1982 when Inspector David O.· Johnson, · 33° ·. ;

C.C.H. to the position of his Personal Representative in the
Valley of Klamath Falls. Brother Hardenbrook was coroneted
a 33°, I.G.H. in 1987 and continued to serve as Personal Re-
* presentative until April 20, 1992.
C. SECRETARIES
L.B. Kimball, 32° was Secretary of the Cascade Scottish
Rite Club, and following Constitution and Inauguration of
Klamath Lodge of Perfection Bro. Kimball was elected Secre
tary in which capacity he served from 1935 to 1937.
Bro. W.W. Cleaves, 32° filled the position as 'Acting
Secretary' in 1937.
Bro. Guy L. Ferguson, 32° was elected Secretary in 1938
and served until 1939.
Bro. Herman Gisvold was elected Secretary in 1939 and
was re-elected each of 29 consecutive years, serving until
1969. He was invested with the Rank of Knight Commander of
the Court of Honour in 1941 and Coroneted a 33°, I.G.H. in
1957.
Bro. Ralph M. Darmody, 32° was elected Secretary in 1970
and served until 1972, when ..

Rank of K.C.C.H. in 1981.
Bro. Charles A. Jacobi, 33° was elected Secretary
in 1984 and served five years until 1989 when he resigned to
enable him and his wife to move into low altitude for his
wife's health.
Bro. James Peters, 33° M:IS e1er.ten C::pci-etary in
1989; he was severely injured in an auto accinent in 1991,
and Bro. Stemple agreed to 'fill in' as Actin~ Se~retary.*

During the October 4, 1937 meeting Bro. Schaupp announc
ed a 'Burning of the Mortgage' on the Masonic Temple to be
conducted October 12. It was announced, also, that the cos•
tumes for Conferral of the 18th Degree had be·en received.
Recognizing the continuing close cooperation in the De
gree work between the Medford and Klamath Falls Valleys, S

Klamath Lodge of Perfection to Confer the Fourth to Four,~;
teenth Degrees with the Fourteenth being Conferred Friday,
November 19, 1937 in the Medford Masonic Hall.

Nineteenth through the Thirtieth Degrees would be Conferred

Thirtieth Degree team is ready and will Confer it in the fall
Reunion November 16 and 17.

e. Places of Meeting Prior to Present Temple
At least for Festive occasions, the Cascade Scottish
Rite Club met at the Willard Hotel. There is no mention of
any other meeting place prior to the minutes of its meeting
August 15, 1932, in which is mentioned thRt the meetin~ took
place in the Masonic Hall. At that time the Masonic Hall
wassrented space in the Old Loomis Building [next door to
the Old COPCO (California-Ore~on Power Company) Building]
between 4th and 5th Avenues on Main Street. In 1934 th,e.~ fMa
sonic] Lodge Building Committee purchased the Moose Lodge
Buildin~ [418 Klamath Avenue] which is the present Masonic
Temple. The Cascade Scottish Rite Club met in a small room
in this building, and,-<:when··1~eplaeedt:.by thed{lamath I.odge<of I
Perfection, the Lodge of Perfection continued meeting in this
small room.
Scottish Rite membership grew quite rapidly following
Constitution of Klamath Lodge of Perfection. in addition to
meeting in this small room, all Scottish· Rite Degree garments.:.
and other equipment necessary to Lodge and Degree work occu
pied space in this small room. Additional 'Masonic Family'
groups organized and, of necessity. eachrtnet and-s~ored its
·special :.equipment in this, by now. extremely crowded build-
ing.
Members of the Scottish Rite Building Committee began
the search for a suitable building, finally selecting as ideal

two adja~ent garages at 632 Wal:nut Avenue. These were re
modeled to meet the.needs of the Scottish Rite Bodies and
several Masonic Family organizations, including Crater Lake
Lodge #211 [Chartered July 23, 1949] and [two years later]
PQnderosa Lodge 1220 [Chartered· June 13, 1957 (consolidated \l'
with Chiloquin Lodge #197, November 19, 1984)) becoming the
present Ponderosa Lodge #197.

Portland, Salem and/or Eugene to attend the Reunions at Klam

Fol1owir~.g conferral of the 32nd Degree in May, 1966, Bro.
Louis Edward Starr, 33°, represented the S.G.I.G. in address
ing the new Masters of the Royal Secret. Following the 1967
Spring Reunion, Inspector Scott 'startled' the Brothers at
the head table at dinner when he remembered the Master of Ka-
dosh~as a non-Mason he knew as the Clinical and Radiological
Technologist in Portland General Hospital in the 1950s; Bro.
Scott was well-known for, among his many attributes, his excellent memory.
Bro. Warren W. Flagg, 33°, [Medford] and Rev. Bro. Ken
neth G. West, 32°, were frequent speakers for Maundy Thursdays
and Easter Sundays. In May, 1984 the Scottish Rite hosted
the~ 'Basin-wide' CELEBRATION of AMERICAN PUBLIC
SCHOOLS honoring all teachers and administrators of all schools
in the District. It was a joint effort by the Scottish Rite
in conjunction with the three Blue Lodges. P.M. Levoy W.
Longmire, 32° was both Chairman and Master of Ceremonies; P.
M. William L. Wales, 32° presented the "MASONIC INFLUENCE in
the FORMULATION, DEVELOPMENT and CONTINUATION of our Public
School System.
In December, 1984 Bro. Fred H. Heilbronner, 32°, received
his 50-year Scottish Rite Pin in his home. He told the fol
lowing story.
"I received the 4th through the 32nd Degrees in 1931, having been sent to Medford for the work. Many of the Degrees were conferred in full costume and were quite colorful and impressive. After three days there I was· ini-

In the Lodge of Perfection meeting, May, 1985, Bro. El
lis G. Matthews was presented with a plaque honoring him for
'service to the Rite' for serving as Prator in the 14th De
gree for 37 years. Later in the meeting Bro. Howard C. Strode,
32°, a retired school teacher, showed an ancient Masonic book,

°" ~, published in 1846. This recent acquisition
belonged originally to his Uncle Frank J. Burch. With the
Secretary's assistance, the 'rightful home' of this book was
determined to be Marcus Lodge #110 in Fredericktown, Missouri.
As a member of .one of the wagontrains on the Oregon Trail,
Frank Burch went on to the California goldfields instead of
continuing into Oregon.
Bro. Arthur Dale Howell, 32°, KCCH was given a plaque
honoring his 25 years of service to the Rite as Almoner in
the Maundy Thursday-Easter Sunday Services and for his work
in the 3oth Degree, in spite of his moving to Mill City, Ore
gon following retirement from the railroad in the early 1970s.

L. Howell, 32° was a Charter Member of Klamath Lodg.e of Per
fection, having received the Degrees in .the Guthrie [OK] Val
ley. in the early 1900s. Bro. A.D. Howell gav~ this Patent*
to the Secretary who, somewhat later and during a visit, gave
the Patent to the Guthrie Consistory.
*All Patents given in the early 1900s era were quite large. Currently, it hangs in the Guthrie, O~lahoma Consistory Museum.

The Spring Reunion, 1985, brought 'two fathers and sons'
together as Brothers in Blue Lodge for the first times, in
Klamath Falls and in Santa Barbara, California. Bro. Harry
J. Marshall, 32°,~ took leave to attend the Ceremony of a 50-
year Masonic Pin awarding to his father in LaCumbre Lodge #
62, Santa Barbara. Through prior arrangements between the
S.G.I.G.s of Montana and Oregon, Bro. George E. 'Pete' Logan
of Townsend, Montana received the Scottish Rite Degrees in
Klamath Falls where his son, Bro. Lyle C. Logan, 32°§ belonged
and was quite active. By staying over the weekend, Bros.
George and Lyle Logan attended Past Masters Night..;the follow
ing Monday.
During the Feast of Tishri Celebration in September, 1985,
Bro. Kenneth G. West, 32°, demonstrated a recent gift of a
S~, particularly, its musical qualities. Later that fall,
October 31 through November 2, the Reunion celebrated the~-

from across the Orient. A busload from Portland, Salem and
Eugene included Inspector Johnson, 33°, arriving th~ second
afternoon. The large number of visiting honor-men sitting in

filled to capacity both Friday and Saturday evenings! The
14th Degree Ring Ceremony was enhanced with the first use of

32 °, KCCH. The new 14 ° ring-pyramid, de.signed by Inspector
Johnson, 33°, had been recently approved by the Supreme Coun
cil, and was presented each new Perfect Elu.
Harold 0. Brandenburg, 33°, was given a plaque commemo~
rating his 45 years of dedicated service as Lodge Officer anlf
work in the 30th Degree. He stated:
"I received the Degrees in the Spring, 1940 Reunion and was 'put to work' that fall."60
He presented a picture of his class, the first to have an
'all Klamath Falls Degree Team for each Conferral.

Two visiting Brothers were present for the January, 1986
Council of Kadosh Feast, Gerald Finell, 32°, Coos Bay and Wal-
ter E. Bowers, 32°, Orient of Okinawa. Bro. Bowers was vis-
iting his daughter and family for their daughter's installa
tion as Honored Queen of Bethel #61, Job's Daughters. Bro.
Bowers had presented his granddaughter, Miss Tiare Gehrman,
with a special gavel, during ·the ~er-e~?ny, and stated:

"By now you know that to rule and guide your Bethel, you need something to wield the Power. I have such an instrument, the gavel.
"This gavel I prize very highly. It was given to me by the Most Worshipful Nohea Peck, Sr., Past Grand Master of Masons of the Grand Lodge of Japan and a personal friend of mine.
"This gavel was made from the handrails of the Masonic Temple in Tokyo, Japan which was razed when a new Temple was erected.
"It now remains for me to present to you this gavel, the Emblem of Power. In the hands of the Honored Queen, it may be made an instrument of great good or of greater evil. With it the Honored Queen governs her B-thel, and the welfare and prosperity of Bethel #61 of the International Orqer of Job's Daughters.
"In your hands, I am confident, it will be 61 wielded for the best interests of Bethel #61. " ·
Two of the older Brothers remarked March 6, 1986 at
Klamath Chapter of Rose Croix that each had seen Halley's Com
et twice. -!-H: Bro. Brandenburg, 33° Jsaid his father had a
wakened both his brother and him to see the comet, and that
they may not live to see it the second time. Bro. Hans B.
Norland, 32°, KCCHJ said he had seen it the first time when
he was 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle in 1910 when he
was a small lad in Norway.
Bro. Hans was Orator for all the bodies from March 1986
to 1989 . Many of his 'orations' concerned some of the very
interesting 'happenings' in his life . As a young lad in Spo
kane, WA, a stranger had rented a room from his parents from
about 1910 or 1911 to 1914 or 1905. These were lean years

for this newly immigrated · family from Norway, and the augmen
tation of income through 'Mr. Phillips' board and room money
was very welcome. Mr. Phillips exuded great charm, and actu
ally developed 'quite a crush' on Hans' mother. While living
with the Norlands it was learned that Mr. Phillips 1ua4 ~

South America for a time, returning via the Amazon River to

flaw, it was a fanatical hatred for the railroads, and con-
sidered them to be the 'true villains' of the Old West."

The upper floor of the Klamath Falls Scottish Rite Tem
p le was extensively remodeled for the fourth Childhood Lan~
guage Disorder Clinic in this Orient. Preliminary work began
in the fall of 1988; completion date was postponed, and the
dedication was October 17, 1992 - Clinic operations having
commenced earlier that summer/fall .
From the Valley of Klamath Falls have come several Broth-
ers who held positions of distinction in the r-rand Lodge of
A.T<". & A.M. of Oregon, among whom are W. Dexter Elliot t, 'Past
~aster of ~rater Lake Lodge #211, serving as r.rand Secretary
from 1966 to 1976, and was made ~onorary Past r,rand waster in
1976; and Elvin E. Phillips, 'Past Master of Ylamath Lodge ~!77,
who serv~d as Grand Secretary f rom 1977 through 1982.
